Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) serves as a cinematic spin-off from the iconic Batman: The Animated Series (1992), a show that laid the foundation for the DC Animated Universe (DCAU). This universe became a beloved shared continuity of animated series, films, and tie-in comics, much like what the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would later achieve in live-action. The DCAU takes place on Earth-12 within DC's vast multiverse, with interconnected stories, recurring characters, and evolving relationships, capturing the imagination of fans for decades. The events of Mask of the Phantasm occur shortly after Season 1, Episode 25, The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy, an episode that marked the first appearance of the Bat-Signal, which is prominently featured in the film. By this point in the timeline, Bruce Wayne has been Batman for about a decade, placing him in his early-to-mid-30s, around 33 to 35 years old. In contrast, the film’s flashbacks show Bruce in his early 20s, a recent college graduate, still on the path to becoming Gotham’s Dark Knight. These flashbacks offer a rare glimpse into Bruce’s early struggles, both with love and his sense of duty, leading up to his decision to don the cape and cowl at the age of 25. Notably absent from Mask of the Phantasm is Robin, even though Dick Grayson exists in this continuity and has been active as Robin for nearly nine years. By the time of the film, Dick is 19 years old, balancing his crime-fighting duties with college life. While his absence may be conspicuous to some, it’s understandable given the film’s focus on Bruce Wayne’s personal story. The emotional depth of the plot centers on Bruce’s past romance with Andrea Beaumont, making this more of a Bruce-centric narrative. It’s easy to imagine that Robin is simply away at college, occupied with his studies during the events of the film. Mask of the Phantasm isn’t the only film within the DCAU continuity. Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1999) and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) are also pivotal DCAU films. SubZero focuses on Mr. Freeze and the lengths he’s willing to go to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, while Return of the Joker explores the legacy of Batman decades into the future. If you plan on watching Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, it's worth watching Batman Beyond: Rebirth Parts 1 and 2 first, as they serve as the pilot episodes of the Batman Beyond series and give crucial context for this future Gotham, the new Batman, Terry McGinnis, and the legacy of Bruce Wayne. With this background, Return of the Joker takes on even more significance as it dives deep into the darker consequences of being the Batman and the weight of past mistakes coming to haunt the future.

Batman it's so good!

Wreath35

And the comics go back to the late 1930's which is crazy

Bo1and

There are different interpretations depending on the creator, goes for basically every character

Bo1and

The voice actor for Batman in this movie and the animated series this movie is based from was Kevin Conroy who passed away not too long ago unfortunately. This Batman franchise also introduced us to Harley Quinn and the original voice actor for her passed away recently as well. The voice actor for Joker was Mark Hamil(Actor that played Luke Skywalker)

Can you please react to (2011) Warrior film. It's a good movie. 👌

This is actually very much it’s own thing. This version of Batman comes from a the TV series, Batman: The Animated Series. This was a ground breaking TV show at the time and this was meant to kind of be a wrap up to that show. Then The Kids WB became a thing, this version of Batman migrated over there with a new art style and they introduced their own Superman series with a big cross over event. Then came Batman Beyond, a sci-fi Blade Runner inspired version of Gotham’s future with a new Batman taking the role, with Bruce Wayne becoming a mentor. That also had a very iconic finale movie with Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Then we go back in time in the continuity to the birth of the Justice League. Cartoon Network produced two high budget series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. There are other shows that share the continuity like Static Shock. But this was so ground breaking. More than ten years of interconnected TV shows and characters. This spawned another 20 years of animated movies and now we get like 4 or 5 of them a year. Kevin Conroy who plays Batman in this movie continued to play Batman across dozens of movies and games until he passed last year. The upcoming game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is his final performance as Batman. This series spawned the character Harley Quinn, reinvigorated characters that were long through forgotten or were never taken seriously like The Riddler and Mr Freeze. In fact… I think the origin of Two-Face in this series is maybe one of the most iconic pieces of TV EVER. I really hope you dive into it at some point. Oh and one more fun fact. The animation team that did a lot of the action animation for Akira worked on this movie. Smaller budget and rushed time frame but sometimes you can see it in the facial animations… that hyper precise, almost too real movement that’s all over the movie Akira.

So glad that you got to experience the performance from Mark Hamill as the Joker, or should I say the best joker in history. Mark Hamill is the best joker doing the cartoons, and the Arkham games, cannot be beaten he’s better than all the live action movie jokers all combined together.

PB 2000

Masterpiece! One of the great Batman stories featuring a classic performance from Mark Hamill as Joker.

Jason Murillo

I think Jessica Chastain would be perfect for Andrea. Warner Bros have always been annoying with copyright.

Mark

Rest in piece Kevin Conroy you brought so much emotion and gravitas to this character

Night King01

This movie ended up being a financial bomb in the theaters because of poor marketing I think. It's still one of my top Batman movies. Imagine seeing this many emotions as a kid in the 90s.

Michael Turpin

So Batman has many love interests. But his main ones are usually Catwoman or Talia al Ghul. Think of Catwoman as his de facto woman. In most universes they somehow find each other or get together at some point. Great reaction guys

Jonny

Yeah please get into the DCAU. It’s all really good!

Caleb

And the joker is voiced by none other than mark hamil! (Luke skywalker)

Simon

Yea guys there’s no such thing as canon when it comes to dc😂 it’s hard to explain but they just have set content that goes with each other. It’s not like marvel where all there animated stuff goes with the mcu, this movie goes with the animated Batman show the justice league show and Superman show. Those are the canon stories that go with this movie.

Simon

Also you guys should do more animated movies! May I suggest Treasure Planet or Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Two great films!

JESSEMLR1

One of the best batman films of all time. RIP Kevin Conroy.

JESSEMLR1

One thing guys , don’t compare these to the live action movies 😂 Rachel was created for the movies , doesn’t really exist in the comics but Bruce has a couple different love interest depending on the story/timeline.

Simon

Damn copyright is so annoying 🤦🏽‍♂️ hate that you guys have to deal with that

Simon

AWE HELL YEA!! One of my favorite shows growing up 😂🔥
