2024-11-06 00:18:52 +0000 UTCThe point of M’Baku challenging is that she isn’t there. He wins by default, Shuri surrendered the throne to him because she never wanted to rule, and he has grown from unworthy in the first film to it being his destiny.

2023-12-29 22:47:23 +0000 UTCFirst time I saw this movie, I thought the same thing, that Namor and Shuri would be a great couple, cute and powerful, and would unite both of the vibranium nations. I still think that Namor should move Talokan to Wakanda, they could add a level of defense beneath the waters. I love Namor and I side with him completely. He went to Wakanda to ask for their help in rectifying their choice to inadvertently put Talokan at risk by revealing the existence of vibranium, which led to other nations searching for it outside of Wakanda, leading them to nearly discovering Namor and his people. He was only trying to keep them safe. Than Queen Ramonda throughout this movie acted emotionally which ultimately led to a war between Wakanda and Talokan when they should have been allies, and Shuri was close to securing the Talokans as allies.

2023-12-15 01:29:49 +0000 UTCEach Black Panther introduction has been a story about vengeance. T'Challa was out vengeance until he realized the mistake he was making by letting it consume him. Killomonger let vengeance consume him completely, not able to let it go, and it cost him his life. Now, Shuri has two previous paths laid before her to take and she initially let's her vengeance consume her purposely knowing what would happen if she did, but in the end realized, like her brother to not let it consume. The reason Shuri won was because of her intelligence. This was a test of brains vs brains. Talokan had the numbers and force, but Wakanda had the tech and that's how she beat him. Being the princess of the royal family, I'm sure she's trained, but she always did her own thing. She probably never thought she'd take the throne being the second born. Being so young, she probably never thought she'd lose her brother, especially not so young, so she was more or less free to do her own thing aka tech. T'Challa in the comics was a genius as well (in the first movie Shuri says he made his previous suit before Shuri made him an upgraded one and in this one she says her brother taught her what she knows, eventhough she surpassed him).

2023-12-14 14:25:49 +0000 UTCI think you have to give Ryan Coogler a ton of credit for making the best out of a terrible situation. He had a script written before Chadwick passed so he has to mourn the loss of his friend, and then rewrite the movie. That's hard. A lot of filmmakers would have abandoned the project. Under the circumstances, I thought he helped produce making a compelling film that was noticeably missing the star actor, but manages to work anyway by leaning into the grief cast by Boseman's absence and leaning on the talented actors to carry it across. My only criticism is the Riri character, who is yet another lazily written "genius kid" character who is supposed to be the next Iron Man, but you can't replace that character so why not do something original, um please? I hate taking established personas (Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow) and updating them simply to keep the persona alive to try and sell tickets. But it doesn't work because, as much as I respect the talents of Natalie Portman, Dominique Thorne, Hailee Steinfeld and, especially, Florence Pugh, they didn't originate those characters on the screen nor did audiences spend enough time with them to become invested in those actors as those characters. Asking an audience that spent a decade with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man to now just accept somebody else stepping into the persona is a hard sell. It's not fair to the actors to ask them to do that, no matter how talented they are. I don't think Coogler had a choice with the Riri character because she was being set up for a future project that now may not even happen in the wake of Marvel taking a pause. I'm of the opinion that the "Young Avengers" project that has been slowly set up is a terrible idea and should be scrapped. Marvel/Disney have lost billions of dollars the last few years so they desperately need to rethink their entire business model. Between the aftermath of Covid, ubiquitous streaming services and content and a terrible economy (for working class folks; if you're rich, it's a great economy), the future of cinema is at a crossroads that I don't think it has seen since the end of the silent film era and the advent of television. It survived both of those changes in technology and presentation, and it will be fascinating to see if it can survive into the next decade.

I’ll message you guys about them later, but for now I’ll tell you about the newcomer Riri Williams. She may not have been allowed to take her suit, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of both of them. Her superhero codename is Ironheart. That’s also the name of her upcoming show set to drop on Disney Plus in the future. Her actress Dominique Thorne originally auditioned for the role of Shuri in Black Panther 2018. She even did a screen test with Chadwick. So when they wanted to incorporate Riri into the film, Dominique was their first and only choice. Furthermore, around the time they were wrapping up Wakanda Forever and before Dominque started working on her Ironheart series, she got a FaceTime call from Robert Downey Jr himself. He didn’t have a lot of advice to give her because she didn’t really need it, but he did tell her that Riri should be able to shine on her own terms and not be a direct copy of Iron Man.
