This Superman was dark the comic version is different this movie version is a new take on Superman. Superman is usually bright and optimistic and he wears bright colors he’s a typical superhero not someone who kills or likes to threaten criminals to get information.

Then people with DCEU profile pictures show up and say you "don't understand the movie" etc. wild stuff. Jumping into the DCEU is always a game of "Ah okay hopefully people don't get mad at me for liking this or disliking that"

2023-07-16 16:39:35 +0000 UTCWhat I loved as I did really enjoy elements of this film: Krypton looked great, unique take going for a very H.R. Giger (Alien, Aliens) look combined with ancient human cultures in terms of the fashion and alot of fantasy elements. Not my personal favourite Krypton take but it's still amazing and I'm glad this aspect of Superman was very fantasy inspired. Michael Shannon as Zod is amazing in this film and carries it from his introduction to his death. Terence Stamp and Michael Shannon are peak Zod. Henry Cavill is a great Superman, lacking in his Clark Kent as that aspect was really only introduced right at the end but he's 100% The Man of Steel, he's Superman. Action was solid this being the first Superman live action film that translated the action of the comics and animated show/movies into live action to the level we saw them in the comics. And of course the amazing cinematography by Zack Snyder and score by Hans Zimmer. John Williams did the original score for Superman so that's just Superman's theme for me but Han Zimmer is amazing.

He just needed better writers and someone who actually understood Superman throughout as a character instead of only certain renditions of the character. Zack would make a killer Injustice Superman film though. Same applies to Ben Affleck I think he's a perfect Batman visually but he just needed better writing and a plot that used him in a better film. The Batman/Superman crossover in the DCAU is the perfect example of what we should've gotten.

2023-07-16 15:43:45 +0000 UTCThis is a very interesting take on Superman, the whole DCEU (Connected DC Universe starting with Man of Steel) in general is very much Zack Snyder's take on these characters and is why films like Man of Steel are mixed among other reasons. Alot of people including myself see Zack as someone who just doesn't understand characters like Superman but more so Batman. The tone something you pointed out along with the colours all come from the trend created after The Dark Knight Trilogy where directors tried to make every Superhero film feel dark and gritty in tone something Zack brought to Man of Steel and of course the city of Metropolis as well. Zack carries over this tone and look throughout all his DC films regardless of the characters involved so it's a very debated aspect of his films as a character like Superman should not have the same visual dark and moody tone as a Batman. People just wanted each hero to have their own visual tone instead of a shared tone. Example of individual tones below, All shows set in the same continuity: Batman Animated Series Intro - https://youtu.be/rrmUk2YUm14 Superman Animated Series Intro - https://youtu.be/SjS2TqzuzoY Static Shock Intro - https://youtu.be/N36X0MOwLto All these shows have there own tone, music, colour palette, themes and genre. The minds behind the DCAU (DC Animated Universe) knew that each show had to have it's own tone and visual language in mind so when a character like Batman crosses over into Static Shock and visited Dakota City he brings his unique tone into the show while Dakota City and it's characters retain there own tone and look without having to treat everything as dark and moody as Batman. Same goes with Batman crossing over into the Superman Animated Series, Batman visits Metropolis but still carries over his own tone a contrast to bright blue and red Superman and the Art Deco City of Metropolis even at night looks completely different to Gotham City. Overall I'm glad you at least enjoyed this film, I personally enjoyed it for the most part but I do recommend other Superman media for example Superman from 1978 and it's sequel which feel much closer in tone to what people wanted in a new Superman film but of course with better visual effects and a larger scale storyline build up across films.
