The original guardians existed in an alternated universe known as Earth-691 set in the far-off future of the 31st Century separate from the Earth-616 (Mainline Marvel Universe) Guardians. Original Team: https://youtu.be/ysl-3-QyIs0 Earth-616 incarnation of the guardians introduced in 2008 discover a time-displaced Vance Astro in a block of ice floating in space. It is his introduction as "Major Victory of the Guardians of the Galaxy" that inspires the team to take up the name. So that's the only connection between the two teams in the comics. But with this MCU rendition they simply brought them into the modern day and the same universe as the Guardians of the Galaxy we know and love making them come before our team as like a older group of hero's.
