Vince mentioned The Three Stooges. They were a comedy trio who made 190 short comedy films (15-20 minutes) from 1934 to 1959 which were popular TV programming in the 1960s. They made several full length movies also but the shorts are more known. Some other film comedy acts of the 30s-50s: The Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. And there were 220 shorts (the first 88 were silent films) with the many child actors of Our Gang (AKA The Little Rascals) from 1922-1944.

Natalie Wood started as a child actress. One of her best known films is the Christmas classic MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947) made when she was 8 years old. Other notable movies she starred in: REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955) with James Dean and the musical WEST SIDE STORY (1961). Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were popular actors and starred together in a previous comedy movie which is considered one of the greatest movies of all time, SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959) with Marilyn Monroe. Peter Falk (Max) became well known as the detective Colombo on the long running TV show "Colombo".

The IMDB trivia section on this movie is a fun read with facts like Natalie Wood (Maggie) is of Russian descent and spoke Russian fluently, the pie fight is the longest in movie history, there was an actual 1908 New York to Paris race, and the film inspired a Saturday morning cartoon show "Wacky Races"(1968).

Shoshana was right, the newspaper publisher's wife was played by Vivian Vance who was Ethyl in the TV series I Love Lucy (1951-1957).

THE GREAT RACE movie was made in 1965. The story takes place in 1908 when cars and planes were still new. Women didn't get the right to vote until 1920 (in the USA). Men's and women's fashions changed a lot between 1908 and 1965.
