Just for a refresher, they don't have on their gear because they were being held as suspects and this is going on at the same time as the Annie fight in the finale of last season. Its a blink-and-you-miss-it thing, but in the first episode of this season they show it rewinding time and saying "6 hours earlier". So thats why none of Erens friends were with them during the attack against Annie (besides jean). They were held as suspects instead. So now, once these strange titans started appearing inside the walls they were released and sent to check on the villages but didnt have time to put on gear. I hope that clarifies things.

2022-11-10 07:53:36 +0000 UTCin ilses notebook that titan calls ilse "ymir" and refers to subjects of ymir, and in this episode we hear the girl in sashas flashback talking to her is called ymir....... Also those two girls are not new characters we have seen them in season 1 but they werent shown a great deal
