So heartbreaking. John and Lena were married for only 7 months. Iwo Jima is the island where that iconic photo of the American flag is being raised by Marines - I’m sure you’ve seen it. John served in the peacetime Army before enlisting with the Marines at the outbreak of the war. By now, the Japanese were desperate as their supplies were being cut off from them, and they had little fuel. Kamikaze attacks were on the rise, putting American losses back to 1942.

2022-09-22 17:46:11 +0000 UTCGySgt Basilone was one of the bravest men to wear the uniform. His actions on Iwo Jima earned him the Navy Cross (posthumous). The Navy Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor. Thank you for these great reactions. As a veteran I appreciate the respect you show for these men and women.
