How Blades of Furry Started!

This project started as - believe it or not - my (Deya’s) Master’s thesis. My topic was suspension of disbelief and I had to do a written research component (which involved talking shit about the movie Frozen for a page and a half), and a visual component that proved my point. At the time I was trying to beef up my storyboard portfolio so I decided to make a storyboard/animatic instead of a comic.
The idea was to come up with a REALLY out there concept that still felt natural when you watched it. So I asked Emily to give me some concepts and she immediately said “Furries and Vampires.”
I added, “What if they were figure skaters?”
“YES but make it dangerous.”
So.
You know.
A Gay Furry Vampire competing in Figure Skating Battles is what I came up with.
The video above is the final animatic! I actually planned it to be twice as long as this, but I realized that would also be more than twice as much work as I needed to do to complete the thesis and gave the FUCK up lol.
Anyway, I was trying to pitch something else to WEBTOON and it wasn’t working out... and I thought... maybe.... maybe they would like gay furries..... So, with Emily, we pitched that. And the reply I from my editor was literally “Oh no, I love this.”
And the rest is history! BoF is now a Webtoon with you lovely fans that are so sweet and amazing! Thank you for helping make Blades of Furry something than we never could have imagined~ 💖
