The Last of Us (S2:E3) - Full Reaction

I’ll keep going, but only because it’s with you and it won’t be the same. The distraction quest is a good idea but continuing a revenge cycle?

The Critical Drinker’s review on this series is 100% spot on. I agree with him and will not invest my time watching this "shite". Season 2 is a hard pass because I’m not interested in TV shows or films that want to shove “The Message” down my throat. So many out there have tried to do this to their audience, and all of them have bombed. Plus killing off a main character like Joel just reminds me of why I stopped watching the Walking Dead years ago. No thank you, Sir I will not have another! To get where I'm coming from, here's the link to CD 's review. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQLAExbWpzo

If you think this season is going to have a complete ending well you'll be mistaken because S2 won't adapt Part 2's full story. S3 or maybe a S4 will wrap up the second game's storyline and it's not going to go the way you think. The main characters that you play as in Part 2 are both Ellie and Abby.

Justin Cummings

I almost didn't come back to this; I only did because I'm hoping for some sweet revenge.

I can definitely understand the impulse of just wanting to stop watching. I get very much emotionally invested as well, but for me, the curiosity is stronger than that impulse. I do get being this upset about Joel dying, but they definitely could not tell the same story if they killed off someone else. I think it's fine that people don't like it, and it ruins the show for them, but I massively disagree with it being a "bad decision". The show challenges you to confront some pretty ugly emotions, and not everyone wants that from a show (or game for that matter)

Mogel

Tiny? Please. They have more experience in their pinky fingers than most of the people in Jackson.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

OMG, the OC. Loved that show soo much.

So Cassie I got a lot of cuss words thrown at me last week for getting my friends hooked on this show on this only to have one of the major characters die. However I have played the games and I know what happens. All is not lost. However I wonder if..... 👋 Nevermind nevermind. I can see that your not ok. We can both empathize with you and know there are a lot of people out there who feel like you do. This is where dogs can come in handy. Our dogs are super supportive and rest there head in our lap just to let us know they're here.

Cassie - The death of a beloved character can actually help you deal with the death of loved ones in real life. My mother and eldest brother died within a couple of years of each other and believe it or not an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where a main character died help me get through my grief. I know you haven’t seen it so I won’t mention which character it was but the episode was very realistic as to what you experience when a family member dies, and it helped to know that other people had felt the same as I was feeling at that time. I was again helped by that episode when my father died in 2018.

Richard Maurer

This is where we must part ways, Cassie. I have no desire to continue on.

Rick Williams

I know. There is too much talk about the game imo. I prefer the discussion to stick to what is depicted in the show.

Clay F

Why are people talking so much about what happens next in the game. Those are spoilers for future episodes of the show. Please stop!

Cole Jennett

My biggest take away from this reaction is how strong and brave Cassie is! Especially after admitting to normally stepping away from a show after an episode like the last one. It takes a lot to walk into something knowing that you're going to have a powerful emotional reaction to it.

LAST OF US. While I may question that a team of only 2 tiny girls is going to do battle in Seattle, the preview scenes for the next episode S2E4 piqued my interest. The series has captured my attention since S1E1. Good writing and excellent production quality. S2E2 was stunning. I will watch the remaining 4 episodes of S2, and then decide if I will watch S3. I know nothing about the game. ANDOR. I am going to watch Andor S2, which premiered last week. Andor S1/S2 episodes average only about 46 minutes. ANDOR (8 Emmy® nominations including Outstanding Drama Series) (has some romance) focuses on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) of Rogue One. Stellan Skarsgård (Boris in Chernobyl) is also a lead. Begins 5 years before Rogue One (2016) and A New Hope (1977), and has flashbacks even further in the past to give background such as you like. ANDOR is considered one of the more "mature" or “adult” SW series, i.e., a SW series for grownups. ANDOR and The Mandalorian get good reviews, generally better than other SW series: IMDb 8.4, RT 96%, RT Audience 84% = Andor IMDb 8.6, RT 90%, RT Audience 78% = The Mandalorian IMDb 7.5, RT 85%, RT Audience 64% = Ahsoka IMDb 7.0, RT 82%, RT Audience 61% = Obi-Wan Kenobi IMDb 7.2, RT 66%, RT Audience 49% = The Book of Boba Fett IMDb 4.2, RT 78%, RT Audience 19% = The Acolyte

Clay F

Andor S2 is 10x better than S1. I'm loving it so far!

Philip Alan

Imagine her reaction to not getting complete closure since this season doesn't cover the whole videogame and perhaps not even season 3.

Justin Cummings

Cassie I grossly underestimated your attachment to beloved characters. I now remember in the reaction to the first season, you did emphasize that you have a "unhealthy attachment" to Joel (and Ellie). I understand that now. Really feel sorry that the story at this point made you suffer for an entire week. It looks like the show creator did his thing given half of the episode to mourn and half to the new quest. In retrospect, maybe batch-watching after the entire season would've been better? I just started play through TLOU Part 2 again for the nth time (but with the newly released PC version), and realized some character conversations and scattered notes that I didn't think much during previous play throughs have been expanded by the first 3 episode of the second season.

Tech Citizen

I find Joel’s death less painful to watch than Catherine O’Hara ripping on the 2003 Tigers. I had season tickets that season. Even in the apocalypse I can’t escape that memory.

Shad Kanyak

Mostly faithful my ass.

aarswft

She doesn’t care about that lie. Joel killed Eugene because he found out and lied saying he was turning into a clicker. That’s the lie Ellie is pissed about. It will be the dumbest change this show makes.

aarswft

I could write a doctorates thesis on how badly they botched these characters. I’ll never understand some writers drive to make something shittier just so you can say you wrote it.

aarswft

I’ve followed this channel for years at this point but continuing to prop up this dumpster fire of a show, especially while something like Andor is premiering, is genuinely disappointing. I’m out.

aarswft

It's time to stop defending TV show ellie . They completely ruined her . In part 2 of the game Ellie is more mature and just broken . She's unsure of herself and vulnerable .Here she's very snarky, immature and unprepared . Do yourself a favor and go watch the cutscenes from the game . You'd like Ellie way more !

Philip G.

Cassie: "People have a lot of opinions about this." The award for Understatement of the Year goes to Cassie.

Ellie believes that her immunity needed to mean something after everything she has been through and that is so understandable but to Ellie if making a vaccine or cure requires her to die she is perfectly willing to do it which is so tragic and she didn't even know that she would have to die (at least according to the Fireflies) but Marlene and the Fireflies didn't want to even take the risk her refusing to do the surgery so that's why they didn't tell her. Ellie wants to save the world which makes since due to her age and being born into that world. Joel, however doesn't give a damn about the world because he has, for the most part, experienced the worst nature of humanity, including himself, but Ellie has become his world. Joel didn't care whether the Fireflies would be able to make a vaccine, cure, or even how would they give it to people because saving the world or his world was the easiest choice he ever made in his life. Joel hoped his lie would absolve Ellie of her survivor's guilt because he wanted her to eventually realize that her life does matter to him and that she didn't need to sacrifice herself for the world because she is his world. Ellie only views the lie through her own point of view but I think the reason why she will be ready to forgive Joel is because she is beginning to finally understand why Joel saved her. Joel saving Abby was more believable in the show because Abby doesn't appear as threatening like the videogame Abby.

Justin Cummings

While the story is mostly faithful to the videogames there are definitely changes in certain events and how the characters are portrayed. Videogame Joel absolutely became a hardened man after Sarah's death so it's less believable that he would feel safe living a mostly chill lifestyle inside Jackson after experiencing the horrors of humanity (including himself) but it's more believable for TV show Joel because this version of Joel became, mostly, a broken man (physically, mentally, and emotionally) after Sarah's death but now he has Ellie in his life, the opportunity to be a normal father again, and become a pillar of Jackson's community (A part of me wants a chill Last of Us Part 2 DLC that is just Joel's mostly relaxing life in Jackson lol) Videogame Ellie is not fascinated by violence from the start as TV Ellie is.

Justin Cummings

Dina wasn't with Joel when he was killed in the game with it instead being Tommy. Tommy in the videogame is definitely more hot blooded and not pragmatic like TV show Tommy.

Justin Cummings

From the preview scenes for next episode, looks like an interesting character or two will be introduced next episode S2E4.

Clay F

Mama didn't raise a quitter. You got this.

Because she doesn't like therapists. It does serve a purpose, she's a reserved person and she doesn't want her business known to anybody that she doesn't trust.

Cassie, I just wanted to say how much I love your reactions! This is exactly why I’ve been a Patreon supporter for so long. Your genuine and sincere reactions, and the way you really care about the characters and stories, make everything so much more enjoyable. Keep doing what you do, you're amazing!

I am on the fence about continuing with the show. I knew what was going to happen, so it wasn't a surprise. It's just that the show has become something else - and fair enough, good for them for taking risks - It's just that for me, the best and most interesting actor in the show is gone and who is left just doesn't interest me.

Walter

The council thing isn't a thing in the game.

AdrianF

The next episode trailer looks good. But since they're not sposed to be finishing the second game's story this season, I was surprised to see how 'far' they are already going off the trailer. If they end this season where I think they will, it'll be pretty controversial/brave. MILD SPOILERS FOR GAME OF THRONES It's a while since I watched GoT, but IIRC any cliffhanger stuff was in the penultimate episode of each season, which was a clever way to do it rather than having to wait a year.

AdrianF

A reason for Jackson to send a group to Seattle is to seek justice for Joel. Another reason is to get rid of outsiders (Abby and her crew) who know too much about Jackson. Yet, Abby and her crew surely have already informed WLF about Jackson. In any case, sending a group is not happening, as the Jackson council rejected the proposal to send a group to Seattle. A reason for Jackson not to send a group to Seattle is to avoid the cycle of revenge. Just let it go and move on. But that could send the wrong message (weakness) and invite being taken advantage of. After seeing the previews for S2E4, I am wondering if WLF might raid Jackson? I know nothing of the game, so I have no idea. I think Jackson is fortified enough to handle a WLF raid. In any case, the council's decision rejecting the proposal is likely the smartest path forward -- stop thinking or obsessing with revenge or justice -- and instead live their lives, and deal with whatever happens.

Clay F

The first season stuck very closely to the game's story, and so far this one is similar with some mild changes. If you remember ep9 from s1, Joel went into video-game mode when taking out the hospital full of Fireflies. It's not unreasonable to think that the second season will require a little more suspension of belief as well wrt Ellie & Dina. Next episode looks great.

AdrianF

A couple of things stuck out for me in this one, that are perhaps hard to talk about without spoilery stuff but only very mild spoilers. If you don't want to know anything then don't read on: In ep2, Ellie tells Jesse that her and Joel had made up the night before, but in ep3 she tells Gail that she regrets not making up with him. However, we know from ep2 that the guitar was back in her garage (i.e., Joel had replaced the strings and returned it to her), and it wasn't just thrown on a pile of clothes but stood up carefully. In the game, although you don't find out right until the end, they do make up. I can see no reason why the show would not have this happen as it's a key scene, so am confused as to why Ellie would lie to Gail. It serves no purpose.

AdrianF

Glad your continuing. I wasn't sure I wanted to continue either. As one that hasn't played the games, I don't know where it's going but I'm sure we are in for a ride.. I hope your feeling better.

Canadianant

Definitely a void without Joel. Thanks for continuing to react to the series. I am continuing to watch the series. I thought this episode was acceptable/good. Your reaction was emotional/great. I feel for you. The preview scenes from next episode piqued my interest. My son loved the game (which I know nothing about). He liked Part II better than Part I. Two tiny girls going on the adventure (quest) seems ridiculous to me. No matter how armed or well trained or ruthless they are. They need more personnel. A couple of Tommy types joining would have been good.

Clay F

They don't discuss a third option. Rather than sending their best fighters why not instead send their best diplomats. Even if they could not get the WLF to give up Joel's killers they would at least be able to do some reconnaissance and have a better feeling of what they are up against.

TheSingulatarian

Daniel hasn't played 2, he knew the plot points from when the game was spoilt. Aside from one line that Abby says late game which is... unfortunate... IMO having finished both games multiple times, she is the better character, 100% (although both are flawed). But I accept completely that it can be hard to get past the death and then being thrust into her character with no background to speak of 12 hours later. If you've played the second to completion and disagree, that's cool, just my pov.

AdrianF

Watch "Top Secret" Ashligh Burton just watched it and had a great time. Have a laugh and you will feel beter.

TheSingulatarian

You are not alone in your feelings about not wanting to watch. If you watch TBR Schmitt's reaction, Daniel essentially says the same thing about his experience with the game. He left the game while playing 2 because you have played the first game as Joel and Ellie and become attached to them, and with 2, you are now playing as Abby, who ripped the emotional attachment from you. It is an interesting listen to.

Brian McGovern

The whole second game is about revenge. It is a very long game and not for the faint hearted.

Ib-René Jørgensen

They say that Revenge is a dish, best served cold. It is very cold in space.

Brian McGovern

Fine I won't sleep tonight
