As for what happened in Salt Lake, Joel was more about getting Ellie out alive than about vengeance. Joel's emotions were about saving Eliie and not a desire to kill. In stark contrast, Abbie was not consumed by those same emotions as Joel had -- instead, Abbie was consumed with revenge and desire to kill.

Abby is consumed by the same emotions that Joel had when he killed all those people to save Ellie. Joel didn’t care about their children or families, he was the embodiment of blind vengeance… which set Abby on the same path… which will now set Ellie on the same path.
