Gattaca (1997) - Full Reaction

Comments

Finally got around to watching this one. I was almost going to skip it if I'm being honest. I only saw this movie once when it came out and only thing I remembered about it was the crossing the road with blurred visions scene. Other than that I just remember not liking it all that much. I guess with aged comes an appreciation of how well done this movie actually is. I'd watch it again. Glad Cassie enjoyed it too. Her reaction to those couple of scenes sure made me laugh. P.s. Was anyone else mesmerised by Uma Thurman's eyes?

Luke Godfrey

I haven't seen this movie since 1997 and I remembered that it was a good movie, but I have never had any interest in revisiting it. So I am grateful you watched it because I probably wouldn't have if you hadn't. A really great film.

Walter

Cassie.. your observance of peeing in this reaction had me literally LMAO... first with the how does pee come out of the real thing and then trying to figure out the right handed man doesnt hold it with his left... OMG.. too funny... I havent seen thing movie probably since it came out in the 90s.. but watching it with you gave it a whole new perspective... your reaction was the best as always. Side note.. did you recognize the guy who played the detective, Anton, played by Loren Dean? He was also in Space Cowboys.. he played the leader of the younger astronauts.

Johnny Bullis

When she acted out the "right handed men don't hold it with their left" I completely lost it. Hahahahaha. Never change, Cassie!

RX2904

Intriguing movie. It always makes me think. And I would not like to live in this world either. Great reaction Cassie. It is our imperfections that makes us unique. It makes us who we are. I wouldn't like a world where people are engineered to be perfect.

Rick Williams

I love this movie! In fact, back then we had cable when I first saw this movie, and then I watched it every time I saw it appear there! By the way, since this is the Easter season, I'd like to recommend the movie Risen starring Joseph Fiennes. In 33 AD, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead. It's a wonderful movie.

Chryss Guiler

That one freaked me out pretty bad. Saw it at the theater. But it did prepare me a bit for covid.

Chris Thom

I just now realized that Gattaca is spelled with the 4 DNA sequence letters.

David Patterson

One of my favorite movies of all time. Some great lines ("There is no gene for fate", and "We now have discrimination down to a science"); and the score is spectacular.

Rich H

'Predestination' is a great Ethan Hawke movie. For more Andrew Niccol, 'In Time' is good too.

Odd Thomas

It's marked on her requests app as already seen. It's a terrific movie and I wanted to request it but alas she's already seen it so no reaction.

KTVindicare

She says in her intro she saw them before the channel.

Jacob King

Isn't that movie about child abuse?

TheSingulatarian

I might be on board if it was a species that mankind had made prematurely extinct - but extinct 10,000 years ago... its just a publicity gimmick to revive a cutesy-wutesy species. The bond has been cut. According to Wikipedia, these are not genetically the same as real dire wolves, they literally did the same shit as Jurassic Park and genetically tampered with an ancient genome. Didn't anyone listen to Jeff Goldblum?

ArsTropica

ryany

Cassie contemplating right handed men not holding it with their left 😄

Robert da Spruce

Exactly. lol

Chris Thom

"Uncle Yoder pronounced my turnips were better than yours at the last Rumspringa!"

ArsTropica

And I wonder if the people actually doing the science consider the ramifications. I’ve read several articles about the resurrection of the dire wolf and absolutely nothing in them made me think they considered the consequences. One of the co-founders of the company said they decided to do it because it would be “cool.” Their advisory board includes actor Joe Manganiello. When asked about his qualifications in a separate article, he said he was interested in genetics and pointed out that he played a werewolf on the tv series “True Blood.” Nothing about any of this leads me to believe they’re taking this as seriously as they should.

Just Plain Bob

What scares me the most is the inevitable invention of the artificial womb. When that happens, we can kiss any type of natural selection goodbye.

ArsTropica

"Did he sneak on the rocket? Is he going with him?" Too cute. Cassie is so sweet. She's always looking for the best-case scenario in every situation, always the optimist.

fastecp1

Wait Until Dark ftw!!! Where I found it: TCM, of course!

🚩

I had forgotten how good this movie is. As you said, I can see us heading in that direction, and I don't want any part of it. It reminds me of the song 2525 by Zager and Evans: "You won't need no husband, won't need no wife. You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too. From the bottom of a long glass tube." Nobody's gonna look at you. That's a scary thought. I'm looking forward to Leon; I am happy you decided to watch all 4.

fastecp1

I have a large collection of copied/burned DVDs from the local video store. But I actually haven't put one in the player in like nine years. Crazy.

Chris Thom

Beautiful area. But woah I was just looking up that building and I realized that I used to have a recurring dream set at that civic center. It must've been because of this movie. But I think I've been there before once too. Weird.

Chris Thom

Was watching a doc about the Pennsylvania Dutch once and they all admitted that even the most devout Amish women would find a way to be passive aggressive about each others' hair, sleeves style, and bonnets. Lol. Life finds a way.

Chris Thom

Great reaction. Stacked cast all the way through, including Alan Arkin. I grew up with Ethan Hawke from The Explorers (1985), so I'm more biased as my fave.

Brian's Dog

Hard watch for me. I used to live in Main County just north of S.F. and the futuristic Frank Lloyd Wright building that they use is the Marin Civic Center where I had to go to court.

Mark Pitta

Cassie, Jude Law’s character Jerome tells you that even with a well genetic enhance body and in this futuristic society you can be pressured to think that being 1st was the only way to live. But his personal choices and fate devoid his purpose of living crippled, that’s why he took his second place medal with him. I’ll see your next reaction of Leon The Professional.

FranciscoGios

The photo used to represent Jerome was in fact created by blending Jude Law and Ethan Hawkes faces together and it’s a throwback to the line in the film. When’s the last time anyone looked at a photo?

Thomas Thompson

Also, our DNA is in the shape of a double helix. Which looks like a ladder, hence the term "borrowed ladder".

Kristin D

😆

Thomas Thompson

I love the line: "This is how I did it... I saved nothing for the trip back." To me it means if you have nothing to lose, you are willing to risk it all to achieve greatness. This is what the valids lack, they are expected to win and terrified of being anything less than perfect.

Jay

Yes, thousands of people interested in the possibility of genetically engineered children responded to this ad thinking it was real. Khan Noonien Singh's parents probably among them. 😊

Steve Holton

One of my all time favorite music scores by the minimalist composer MICHAEL NYMAN. He's only done a few film scores but they're always a highlight and memorable. 2nd favorite score of his is THE END OF THE AFFAIR with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore, excellent score and worth a reaction also

keoma songs

If you like this sort of very thoughtful science fiction, that’s more about ideas and action. I would recommend the film. Never Let Me Go it’s a film that wasn’t seen by very many people and it’s science fiction stripped down to its bare essence. It’s all ideas instead of flashy technology.

Thomas Thompson

Before they release this film as part of the promotion, they ran a fake advertisement I think in New York newspaper or maybe it was a magazine, and the advertisement said that you could have your next child genetically engineered before birth and they got a huge response of people contacting them Trying to find out where to apply

Thomas Thompson

and who can forget him in BASEketball lol

Gray

First time watching this. I do want to add before starting that I also make sort of "chchchchhh" sounds sometimes when I'm thinking.

James Melton

Great reaction. You were tense somewhat similar as with Collateral. Both tense movies. I watched Gattaca 2-3 times circa 25 years ago and very much liked it. I confirmed on this rewatch that I still like it. My favorite of the 4 movies in the Final 4. Has aged well I think. As you acknowledged in the outro, you nailed that the detective was his brother moments before they spoke. I have always liked Ethan Hawke and Jude Law. I like Uma Thurman. You mentioned Kill Bill. She was also in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) (she was Mia Wallace who got the adrenaline shot in the heart). I liked Uma Thurman in Les Misérables (1998) (not a musical) that I recommend. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman were married 1998-2005. (They first met on the Gattaca set.) They have two children: a daughter (Maya) born in 1998 and a son (Levon) born in 2002.

Clay F

He is excellent in The Poseidon Adventure. Both he and Hackman stood out in that -- you could tell in that movie they were talented actors.

Clay F

Another great Jude Law role is Contagion. A bit realistic and heavy as well, but nonetheless, a fantastic movie.

Astraeos

Usually, he had a 70-year film career. "From Here to Eternity", "Bad Day at Black Rock", "Emperor of the North" he certainly was a villain. "Escape from New York", "Mchale's Navy" and may others he was a hero and in pictures like the "Poseidon Adventure" he was an antagonist to Gene Hackman but not necessarily the villain. He really could play anything. I don't think he really got the appreciation he deserved.

TheSingulatarian

"Wait Until Dark" with Arkin and Audry Hepburn. Cassie will love that one.

TheSingulatarian

I'm so glad that someone mentioned the DNA code.

Kristin D

"I never saved anything for the swim back." Looooooooove this movie. So, the four letters that make up Gattaca--G, A, T, C--represent the four letters of the DNA code: Guanine, Adenine, Thymine, and Cytosine. Just one of those small details that when taken as part of the whole, you come to realize how rich and layered and nuanced this absolutely fantastic movie is. And the cast is spectacular--Ethan Hawke has always been underappreciated, and underused in LaLa Land, in my not so humble opinion. Going to watch this while I eat, thank you very much.

Steve Mercier

@Chris - You can dig through the Wal-Mart $5 DVD bin. I always see Gattaca in there.

Mike Lemon

Eugenics can get really dark, really quick. I’m glad Cassie kept it light with her “Right" vs. "Left” focus.

Uncle Phoenix

Eyy I just saw Marty the other night! Sweet movie.

Chris Thom

Agree. Love a good free-association sesh.

Chris Thom

Timely reaction given the recent revelation that a bio-tech company essentially brought back the previously extinct dire wolf by modifying/editing select genes in grey wolves. You have to wonder how long it will be before similar techniques are employed on unborn human children. Presumably, the technology will initially be employed to cure genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, psoriasis, asthma, auto-immune deficiencies, etc. But eventually someone will point out that it’s all a matter of degrees. How about modifying the genome to ensure an IQ of 140 instead of 80? Parents, wanting the best for their kids, will be faced with tough decisions. Why not make modifications for beauty, height, body type, etc.? Studies show that good looking people are more likely to be offered jobs, get favorable results on loan applications, etc. How about modifying for eye color, hair color, etc. How about skin color? We are very close to having the technology to make these things happen. Will the science outpace our wisdom in its application? Or will we answer all of the above in the affirmative - change whatever you want as much as you want. And who decides on the limits, if there are any? The medical establishment? The government?

Just Plain Bob

Most people forget that this was box office bomb. It made only 4 million in its first weekend and didn't recoup its cost. It was very unappreciated when it first came out. However, its the type of movie that resonates and over time its become a classic. A thoughtful and excellent sci-fi movie thatis more relevant then ever.

ExploreWinnipeg

The Dirty Dozen? Marty?

Clarence Newman

Oooh, hell yes.

Clarence Newman

I love me some Alan Arkin. If we add Freebie and the Bean (1974) and The In-Laws (1979), we've almost got enough for a poll.

Clarence Newman

Ethan's most known movie you need to see is Training Day with Denzel, a good movie built for your reaction IMO.

Choof

Since Cassie is always watching movies I've never seen before, the winner of the March Movie Madness had to be Gattica, a movie I've never seen before. I started watching before I have to go to work today, and now I'm intrigued and can't wait to see the rest tonight. But I might have watched this movie before if I realized that Alan Arkin was in it. And do you know what other movie Alan Arkin was in? If you guessed the excellent Cold War 1966 comedy The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming, you'd be exactly right! And did you know that Alan Arkin got his first Oscar nomination, for Best Actor, for that 1966 comedy? I sure hope Cassie watches it soon, because it might not get chosen in the Pick A Flick that I enter it into every month, but I sure hope it does wins!

MikeLL

Noooo! Go on the tangent. Tangents are fun.

Mike Lemon

You want another Ethan Hawke movie? Training Day! Denzel gets all of the plaudits for that movie, but Ethan goes toe-to-toe with him for 2 hours and holds his own.

Shehab Dawoud

Another movie that talks about handiness, we recently had it come up in "The Lincoln Lawyer". The doctor suspected something was up, but let it slide based on the use of a left hand... that for the interesting mime Cassie. You want to see more Ethan Hawke? Well, there is this movie with Denzel that keeps losing polls...

Mojo One Thousand

I always enjoy when Ernest Borgnine shows up in a film. Usually playing villains he always made an impression in parts big or small. Gore Vidal, who was mostly a writer, does a good job here.

TheSingulatarian

Most definitely, I've been collecting since 1998. I could start my own streaming service with the inventory I've amassed. I've purchased a great many rare prints of movies on Amazon and eBay, for excellent bargain prices. I just always need to triple check the Region codes. 😄

Zane From Canada

Haha nice. That's a golden retriever opportunity right there.

Zane From Canada

Go on Amazon look for for DVDs/Blue Rays under $10.00. You can find some real bargains. I rarely pay for a blue ray over $20.00. I used to look at Big Lots. They seem to be in flux at the moment, but you can find some real bargains there as well if you know what you are looking for and have eclectic tastes.

TheSingulatarian

Last ones I got I kind of nicked from the local Blockbuster when they closed down and stopped enforcing late fees (because they were out of business). lol

Chris Thom

"They've got you looking so hard for any flaw that after a while that's all you see" is a quote that I've used in my life many times. This is an excellent movie. The kind of intelligent, thought-provoking and eerily prescient science fiction that I think we need more of. Andrew Niccol (who also wrote THE TRUMAN SHOW) is a very unique filmmaking talent. This was also the first film I ever saw Jude law in. So glad you finally got a chance to watch it. Can't wait to see this reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

He's definitely one of the best modern actors imo.

Chris Thom

Gattaca is an excellent film. I don't watch much basketball, but I was hoping Florida would win so I could see your reaction to it. Can't wait to watch it tonight!

Mark T

Absolutely. The Beat Goes On always has great deals available. The Gattaca DVD I got for $7.99.

Zane From Canada

Been so long since I've bought a DVD. Can you get good deals on older movies like this nowadays?

Chris Thom

Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke got married after meeting on this movie. Their daughter Maya who looks just like Uma is also an actress

Choof

Was always rooting for Florida just so you could finally react to this, I mean I didn't actually watch any of the games though 😀. All Jude Law films on the channel has been great so far still some good one's to come. I'll have to rewatch eXistenZ as that's another Jude Law sci-fi that's pretty trippy.

Gray

I don't usually do this.... In fact I never do this but I want to thank Cassie and everyone at PIB for the excellent job they did putting this whole thing together. Everyone did a fantastic job. From the drawing to keeping track of the winners. To the winner congratulations. If I put more thought in the men's like the women's tournament maybe I would have won but probably not in the women's bracket I picked the Elite 8 right the final Four and the national Championship and winner. I was 13 points off the combined score. Just goes to show I am more into women's than I men's. So a big Thank you to everyone. Although Gattaca is not our type of movie. I just want to say thank you so much for a awesome idea and doing a fantastic job. Maybe next year we do men's and women's? Just a thought.

Zachary (Verified Swiftie)

Where's all my "watched this in Biology class in High School" peeps at?

Astraeos

Definitely a sci fi what if this and this and this kind of thing. Reminds me a bit of Brave New World. Curious about the writer.

Chris Thom

Yes finally! One of my all time favourites. Excited to watch this later.

Aaron Ritchie

Only caught that now - the Florida Gattas - a bad pun like that was DESTINED to win it all. Should have used the movies to help with my bracket.

2-Can

I'm so excited for this one. Such an underrated gem for the 90s. After almost all of my fav picks dropped out early on, it is nice to see the last one of them standing won at the end. 😊

Gábor Árki

I've never seen this one. I look forward to watching it.....when the DVD arrives. 🤭

Zane From Canada

Thank you for reacting to my favorite sci-fi film unfortunately I’ll have to wait until I get home from work to watch it

Thomas Thompson

🍿👍

I’m so excited
