Space Cowboys (2000) - Full Reaction

Yippie Yi Yay!! What a great cast, I could watch them do anything. They all just gave great screen presence. The logistics of the mission were confusing and were a bit out there (pun intended) at times and I wanted more emotion in the end but a very easy and entertaining watch!

(this is a scheduled post in hopes that the video is fully uploaded and processed by the time you see this!)

Space Cowboys (2000) - Full Reaction

Comments

Finally got around to watching this one. While I mostly enjoyed it, it's not one I'd watch again. I feel the movie went astray the moment they got in space, and the final scene was beyond absurd.

Luke Godfrey

My take was basically the same as yours when I first saw it, Cassie. It was fun but not as great as the other space films. By the way, the big robot arm they used to grab the satellite in space, on the real life version on the real Space Shuttle, it was called “Canadarm”, because that robot arm was Canadas’ contribution to the Space Shuttle program. That was the arm that was used on all the major satellite and space station construction missions.

Omar

Well, I also would’ve added Along Came Jones (1945) and Vera Cruz (1954) but I wanted to stick with the earlier ones first.

Larry Darrell

Out of that bunch of Cary Cooper movies, I would vote for Sergeant York for sure! But how can you not mention High Noon (1952) with Grace Kelly?

Mike LL

Cassie.. I am glad you watched this.. I havent seen this since I watched it with my mom back when it came out. It was a favorite of hers.. she passed away back in 2016 so it was nice to watch it with you.. I remembered some of it. I found it neat that James Cromwell played Zefram Cochrane who was the first man to go to warp speed in Star Trek First Contact and he plays this jerk for NASA.. Ill do what you do where you envision your own ending .. lets say this character is a distant relative of Zefram Cochrane who lost his way but down the road felt bad about what he did in this movie but also still did things for his own interests.. kinda like how Zefram Cochrane did but also ended up being a good guy.. so yeah.. theres a Cassie ending for you... ;)

Johnny Bullis

Despite the great cast and performances, I was too annoyed by the bad science to think well of this movie when I saw it back in the day: the wrong-in-so-many-ways idea that an object over halfway to the moon would be pulled to the moon's surface by it's gravity. This is repeated and then made central to the ending. Not only would an object have to be much farther than halfway for the less-massive moon's gravity to dominate, the odds of hitting the moon at all are fairly small, requiring precise aim/momentum. More likely to orbit. The moon is a moving target - 2000 miles in diameter, 240,000 miles away. If this was just a throwaway bit of exposition, I could overlook it. Surely someone in the production understood the mistake. It's very elementary physics. Either the writer(s) didn't care or couldn't figure out how to fix it. I know -- I'm being picky, maybe pedantic. But the main thing I remember from when I saw it is the screeching grating feeling in my brain whenever this line was uttered. An whopping error confidently presented to an unsuspecting audience as fact.

Correct, Roger and Hawk, did make it right between them, they just did it like men would do it, by how they interacted with each other in difficult situations. Cassie said, there men she would just love to hang out with, reminds me that I was able to hang out several times with many of the Astronauts from the Apollo mission, it was amazing I like every single Clint Eastwood movies, some better then others, but I Clint is great, wish I could meet him in real life.

John A

You know what, Ike, I cannot read "Mr Eastwood" without it sounding in my head like it did in Back To the Future 3 - "Mr Aystwood". 😆

Clarence Newman

I agree. I don’t think Mr. Eastwood stuck the landing with this one. Is Clint infatuated with tragic endings? As much I as I love this movie, there should have been more closure set up between Hawk and Sara. The fates of Ethan and Roger were elusive (they got “tossed” literally and figuratively from the final act). And finally, Zephram Cochrane, err… excuse me, “Director Gerson” and the Russian general seemingly go Scott-free. MY ENDING: Hawk talks to Sara again before strapping on the giant rockets. Knowing what he’s attempting to do, she says not to do anything stupid. He replies, “No ma’am. 'Cause I’m afraid of you!” in his awesome Texas drawl. He also tells Frank that “For once, they are both getting what they want, so…. it a draw. They both win.” And before he has a chance to respond with something equally witty, Hawk says “Thank you, Frank.” After that - I omit the scene of a dead astronaut sitting on the Moon, staring lifelessly at the Earth - that's horrible even with Frank Sinatra singing. Hawk wouldn’t settle for the Moon after seeing it up close, he would have steered around it and never once look backwards. I’d like to think that he’s still out there setting records.

Ike

Always a pleasure to watch Clint Eastwood movies. I think you can handle 'Mystic River', you should make an executive decision and just watch 'Mystic River', it's a great movie.

JPDotCom23

Love this film! It’s one that gets watched at least once a year. Seeing these 4 legendary actors showing up the young guns, and having fun doing it… and in SPACE! Who’d a thunk it. ;-) When it comes to Feel-Good movies, this one’s near the Top. As legendary as these actors are, Space Cowboys was only one of the few times they’ve worked together. Including the amazing and beautiful Blair Brown, here are some other collaborations… Maverick (TV episode) - Duel at Sundown (1959)… starring James Garner and featuring a before the fame, Clint Eastwood. (This episode can be found in the special features of the Unforgiven Blu-ray) Kelly’s Heroes (1970)… starring Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland. Highly, Highly Recommended. The Rockford Files (TV Episode) - The Girl in the Bay City Boys Club (1975)… starring James Garner and featuring Blair Brown as “The Girl.” Rolling Thunder (1977)… starring William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones. Highly Recommended. Space (1985)… starring James Garner and Blair Brown. A fictional 13 hour TV miniseries about the American Space Program, based on the novel of the same name, by James A. Michener. Now… some individual recommendations… Clint Eastwood (simplified, one from each decade): Where Eagles Dare (1968) Dirty Harry (1971) Pale Rider (1985) A Perfect World (1993) Tommy Lee Jones: Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) The Package (1989) JFK (1991) Under Siege (1992) Blown Away (1994) The Client (1994) In the Valley of Elah (2007) Donald Sutherland: The Dirty Dozen (1967) M*A*S*H (1970) Klute (1971) The Great Train Robbery (1978) Ordinary People (1980) James Garner (so many good ones ;-) Up Periscope (1959) The Children’s Hour (1961) The Thrill of It All (1963) The Americanization of Emily (1964) 36 Hours (1964) Grand Prix (1966) Hour of the Gun (1967) Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969) Victor/Victoria (1982) Murphy’s Romance (1985) Fire in the Sky (1993) My Fellow Americans (1996) William Devane: Marathon Man (1976) Yanks (1979) Payback (1999) Blair Brown: Altered States (1980) Continental Divide (1981)… highly recommended Special Mention… Gary Cooper!! It’s time. Design for Living (1933) Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife (1938) Meet John Doe (1941) Sergeant York (1941) Ball of Fire (1941) The Pride of the Yankees (1942) Lastly… I do hope, Cassie, you keep Frequency (2000) in sight. It really is a Special kind of film. If there was ever a case for watching the Top 2 of a poll, this is one. Please don’t forget about Frequency (2000)

Larry Darrell

If you want to watch another movie in which Clint Eastwood directed. Watch Jersey Boys.

Doug Adair

James Garner is named Tank in this movie and he starred in “Tank” in 1984 with a young C.Thomas Howell and a perky Jenilee Harrison.

Henry M

Every tanker in the Army from the Gulf War to today secretly (or not-so-secretly) wants to be Oddball.

JAKH

Geezer Power vs Girl Power. That would be an interesting battle.

Dan M

Ditto on all this. 👆

Larry Darrell

+1 for Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980)

Larry Darrell

I’ve brought up the fact that Christopher McQuarrie personally recommended Klute (1971) to Cassie a number of times since that premiere. I’m with you Clarence, I don’t think I could have let a month go by, without getting to that one. I mentioned it again a little while ago, when someone was wondering about Cassie possibly going to the premiere of The Final Reckoning this year… as in to grease the wheels a little, wink, wink. It couldn’t hurt… unless you wait too late. 🤷‍♂️

Larry Darrell

Geezer Power… that’s cool, never heard that. Made in the thick of The Spice Girls’ “Girl Power.” That’s awesome.

Larry Darrell

Tommy Lee Jones --"Blue Sky" (1994) (Romance/Drama). Jessica Lange (incredible) won Best Actress Oscar. Tommy Lee Jones = excellent as husband of her character. --"Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980). Nom for 7 Oscars incl. Best Picture. Sissy Spacek won Best Actress Oscar. Donald Sutherland --Klute (1981) (w/Jane Fonda). McQuarrie apparently recommended Klute to you. --M*A*S*H (1970) (comedy/war). AFI Top 100 Clint Eastwood --Escape from Alcatraz (1979) [RT=97%] --Pale Rider (1985). The highest grossing western of the 1980s. --High Plains Drifter (1973) (directed by Clint Eastwood). [RT=94%]. A young Clint Eastwood in a western, but NOT a spaghetti western like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) (which was NOT directed by Eastwood). He looks more like he did in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) (directed by Eastwood).

No middle-aged man can turn down Kelly's Heros it is known.

TheSingulatarian

Also for Tommy Lee Jones = "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980) and "Blue Sky" (1994) (w/Jessica Lange). Also for Donald Sutherland = "Klute" (1971 (w/Jane Fonda). Also for Clint Eastwood = "Escape from Alcatraz" (1979) [RT=97%] +1 for "Pale Rider" (1985). The highest grossing western of the 1980s.

And when Chris mentioned the V-Day jams, of course my crooked little brain went right to "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" by the (immortal) Swinging Medallions. It was the second song my wife and I danced to at our wedding. So, yes, her stardust is composed of some of the same silly stuff: https://youtu.be/57s89xrC93o?si=vsk3QyPYU2q5KADk Of course, if you're looking for the romantic slow jam, this is vastly underrated: https://youtu.be/9FBVo0LqhYQ?si=L3KKyDzR1tGZE28o

Above Average Dave

I mentioned "The Dish" elsewhere in the comments, it is also 25 in 2025. Couple of corrections though, it's a radio telescope not a satellite, and it's a sheep paddock in Parkes NSW about 800kms (500mi) east of the start of the outback.

Mojo One Thousand

One more for William Devane: Marathon Man (1976) "Is it safe?"

Clarence Newman

Try "M.A.S.H" the movie 😀

Johnny Salinas

more Clint Eastwood for Cassie: "Absolute Power" (1997) all star cast "A Perfect World" (1993) "Where Eagles Dare" (1968) young Clint for Cassie to swoon over "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) more young Clint "The Eiger Sanction" (1975) and still more young Clint, climbing cliffs in a tee-shirt "Pale Rider" (1985) "Tightrope" (1986) "Heartbreak Ridge" (1984) Clint making young men cry like babies "Pink Cadillac" (1989) "Blood Work" (2003) Tommy Lee Jones: "Under Siege" (1992) "Volcano" (1997) "The Client" (1994) Donald Sutherland: "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) with young Clint "The Italian Job" (2003 remake) with a Wahlberg and a Statham "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) "The Eagle Has Landed" (1976) "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992 original movie) William Devane: "Payback" (1999) "Hollow Man" (2000)

Chris - “Consume” - Chase Atlantic (ft. Goon Des Garcons) - https://youtu.be/oCdXuomafSU?si=pdX2Xfjc2F2Ql-SO Not a romantic song at all lol The Australian group is big on anime and this song was inspired and based off of Kaneki who is the main character in the the manga/anime series “Tokyo Ghoul.” But … I’m in my Drew Starkey era - (who’s also from Dave’s great state of North Carolina!) and his character, Rafe Cameron, from OBX has a YT short with this song - which has been stuck in my head for days.

Rose

Agree completely. When Frank said he wouldn’t go up without Hawk, that said everything. Anything they said at the end would’ve been schmaltzy and overdone. No need for words.

Just Plain Bob

And I say that having never seen Klute. I just think it's something she should do.

Clarence Newman

Klute would have the best chance if Cassie Popcorn picked it. I'll say it again.....Chris McQuarrie, the director of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, PERSONALLY recommended it to Cassie! I'd've watched it the following week.

Clarence Newman

He cited that as his personal favorite among the movies he made.

Just Plain Bob

I think he was great in "The Americanization of Emily", I will probably have to win the monthly drawing for us to get a reaction, but I bet Cassie would love it.

Keith Jones

The "jetpack" is/was a real thing, it was called the Manned Maneuvering Unit was bigger, and only used 3 times, NASA decided it was just too dangerous to be untethered from the shuttle when in space NASA requires astronauts to be tethered. If the scene of Clint moving from the airlock to MMU was real he would have been tethered until attached to the "jetpack" The ISS (International Space Station we love our acronyms) has a version smaller than the movie one that is for emergencies. It's been used 4-5 times. As always a great reaction, it's a fun movie with a big cast.

Keith Jones

While I would vote for Klute, I don’t see Klute winning a Sutherland poll on the channel. I think at least Kelly’s Heroes and Dirty Dozen (and maybe even MASH) would beat Klute. But who knows. Klute might have a better chance in a Jane Fonda poll

Clay F

I’ve been a fan of “The Rockford Files” most of my adult life, which is what led me to Garner’s autobiography. It was a popular show in my youth, yet I hardly ever watched it at that time. I really only started watching reruns about 20 years ago, eventually buying the entire series on both dvd and blu ray. I love the premise of a guy living on the beach in a beat up trailer, fishing for his food half the time, still close to his father, employed in a cool job that he loves and in which he’s his own boss. What’s not to love about that? As my interest grew, I started seeking out interviews with the people that worked with Garner. The acclaim was universal; they all loved him and told story after story of his generosity of spirit and how he was always fighting for the little guys on his casts and crews. Of course, my admiration for the man grew as I heard more and more of these stories. He seems to have been Keanu Reeves before there was a Keanu Reeves.

Just Plain Bob

+1 for Pale Rider

Clay F

This one was one of Clint's studio films. That was the arrangement: a studio film(s) for a passion project. "Do Heartbreak Ridge, you can direct Bird". "Do The Rookie, you can direct Unforgiven." "Do Space Cowboys & Bloodwork you can direct Mystic River". And so on. Needless to say he batted very high making good entertaining films and masterpieces. 😎

Zane From Canada

Aww that's nice to hear all that about Garner. Always suspected he was a really good person in real life but never knew for sure.

Chris Thom

You know we gotta hear what those V-Day jams are now Rose. I'm curious and intrigued.

Chris Thom

Great movie. Great cast. Great Cassie. Good old fashion fun. Roger and Hawk didn't need to express themselves. They already knew how each other felt. Words were not needed.

Rick Williams

This is a great post, Bob! Such an interesting dynamic. And even shows more to Garner's character that he didn't freeze McQueen out for his bad behavior. Just call him on stepping over the line, stand up eye to eye, have it out and move on. That's character and leadership in action. In sports we say, "Is he a guy (one of many) or a GUY (a superstar). Garner was a GUY.

Above Average Dave

Klute was on TCM yesterday

Eddie Perkins

A Perfect World is a great movie.

Eddie Perkins

Exactly! This is how it was with my grandfathers' when they finally went. Neither one wanted their passing to be a big deal. When their time came, both men were "complete" to put it in one simple word. 🙂

Zane From Canada

She'd like PERFECT WORLD. I actually have a movie poster for that one signed by Clint Eastwood himself.

Stick Figure Studios

My dad and I actually talked about this as we were leaving the theater from this movie. At first he and I thought that maybe there should have been a more overt emotional reconciliation between Frank and Hawk, but we ultimately decided that it would have been too much and was unnecessary... because the thing is, Hawk and Frank did have their coming together near the end, it was just more restrained and "manly." Hawk even said that he loved Frank at one point ("I love you, Frank, but why did he got to be such a killjoy about everything") . That's about the most you ever get from these men. That's as heartfelt and vulnerable as they can be and while it might not be as effusive as Cassie might like, it's still real and it's still emotional.

Stick Figure Studios

As I said back when you watched MILLION DOLLAR BABY and OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, I love Clint Eastwood both as an actor and a director. He's One of my favorite filmmakers. I Saw just about every movie that he did throughout the '90s in the theater with my dad including this one. We both loved it. While it might be one of his "lesser" efforts, it's still charming and eminently entertaining. I had a feeling you'd like this one. So glad you got a chance to watch it. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Dave’s words of wisdom knows no bounds! You’re absolutely correct - especially when no one’s looking … comes from the 💛 “Murphy’s Romance” is another delightful film!

Rose

James Garner described his relationship with Steve McQueen at some length in his autobiography. In many ways, they couldn’t have been more different. McQueen was a serial adulterer that was known to treat co-stars and crew poorly. Garner was married to the same woman his entire adult life and always faithful. He was also very well regarded for the way he treated his co-stars and frequently went to bat for crew members. They were friends for years, with a brief hiatus after Garner made “Grand Prix.” McQueen was envious of Garner’s role in the movie even though it was first offered to him and he turned it down. They were both racing enthusiasts with Garner being a frequent participant and huge advocate for off road racing and being one of the first inductees into its Hall of Fame. Garner even perfected a maneuver that came to be known as the “Rockford Turn.” He did almost all the stunt driving on “The Rockford Files” for the simple reason that he was a better driver than any of the stuntmen. Finally, McQueen’s wife said that he always looked up to Garner, much like a younger brother looking up to his older brother. All in all, a very complicated relationship with both admiration and envy from McQueen towards Garner.

Just Plain Bob

Such a fun movie!!

thomas king

As always, Rose Knows™, folks! The Day-Garner chemistry was amazing and it is repeated, though in a completely different way, in MOVE OVER DARLING, with Polly Bergen playing the "complication." Garner had that laid-back charisma and perfect comic timing, another rare combination, that made chemistry with his on-screen love interests a much more often than not occurance, even in a May-September movie like MURPHY'S ROMANCE. Sally Field just can't help herself even though he's a good 20 years older. Looking at his extensive career, I now what to fire his agent(s) for some of these script choices. Different time and there were still vestiges of the old studio system early in his career, but he just ended up headlining some serious duds. I don't know, maybe he seemed too nice to get edgy roles, but he was a talent. God bless and RIP. (And, yes, we're all human and have our down moments, but it doesn't cost much or anything to be nice to folks, especially when no one's looking. 😉)

Above Average Dave

Love those Clint Eastwood recommendations. Also I think Tommy Lee Jones was fantastic in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Sissy Spacek. For James Garner - “The Thrill of it All” with Doris Day. I think Cassie would enjoy this early 60s rom-com.

Rose

She should see the younger stud (James Garner was very handsome) in a popular 60s rom-com with Doris Day - “The Thrill of it All.” Their chemistry was off the charts! Plus great protip: you can never go wrong with the golden rule - kindness and respect - people remember that and can’t help but appreciate you as a good person.

Rose

This film reminds me that James Garner should've been a much bigger star. Sure, I loved the Rockford Files (one of the best TV theme songs ever, too — though I still believe the theme to Johnny Quest remains as epic as top symphony), but he was magnetic on the big screen. Somehow he missed becoming a "movie star." Not sure if it was script choice, representation or just bad luck. Also, from all reports, he was a stand-up guy throughout his career who didn't take any guff from ego-maniac co-stars, including Steve McQueen, whom he apparently faced down more than once for being a jerk to the crew during THE GREAT ESCAPE. As an aside ProTip: If you ever get to act or work on a movie or show, treat the crew like your best friends — including buying them coffee/treats every day you're on the shoot. They are what make the whole thing go.

Above Average Dave

I love Pale Rider. Very reminiscent of Shane (1953) and High Noon (1952). "PREEEAAACHEEERRR!" 🫡

Zane From Canada

Hahaha typical Cassie, rewriting films in here mind to what she would've preferred. Love it! 😄 The way they did the ending makes sense to me. Very few words, a handful of nods, a couple humorous pokes, and that's all she wrote. Not a big deal made. And going out that way definitely beats the alternative. 👨‍🚀🌕

Zane From Canada

I know I swear Prime dismisses some movies from the roster the second Cassie does a reaction to them.

Chris Thom

It happens a ton in the comments. Everyone like 'YEAH we're going to go on such and such journey for the next month!!' And then it's just on to the next thing where a similar discussion happens.

Chris Thom

Play Misty was a solid thriller. That would be fun for the channel. Also kind of cool to see where Clint made his home and even served as mayor for.

Chris Thom

Great film, so of course it’s not currently streaming where I’m at.

Just Plain Bob

Recommendations for more from this cast: Clint Eastwood - the Dirty Harry films, “Pale Rider” and “Play Misty for Me” Tommy Lee Jones - “Rolling Thunder” (small but pivotal role, also stars William Devane, who played the flight director in this film) and “Under Seige” Donald Sutherland - “Don’t Look Now” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” James Garner - “Marlowe”(in which he plays Philip Marlowe, the greatest/most well known private eye of all time), “Maverick” (tv show and basis of the film) and “The Rockford Files” (tv show in which he plays the second greatest private eye of all time - and my second favorite show behind only “Star Trek”)

Just Plain Bob

For the Apollo 11 anniversary in July please consider Australian movie The Dish (2000) centered around the satellite in the Aussie outback who beamed the TV pictures of the moon landing into homes

Milton William Burray

If I recall Cassie was going to watch a Sutherland film as a tribute, "Klute" came up a lot in comments and was recommended as the best one to watch. Never happened, and everyone moved on, LOL.

Joe

Glad you liked it, Cassie! You can't really go wrong with Clint Eastwood. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease - "A Perfect World" with Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner! It's so good!

bgb1975 (Brian)

The James Garner film I want Cassie to watch is Victor/Victoria (1982) a musical with Garner, Julie Andrews, Lesley Ann Warren and Alex Karris. Directed by Blake Edwards. Cassie has seen at least 2 Blake Edwards directed films in the last year, Breakfast At Tiffany's and The Pink Panther. And Edwards also directed the much requested Cary Grant film Operation Petticoat (1959). So yes to more James Garner and Blake Edwards.

Mike LL

Cassie might get a kick out of Monster in Law.

Chris Thom

Jane Fonda did some good stuff. Aside from the eye candy element, Barbarella is rubbish, but Cassie could do a lot worse than Cat Ballou (1965), Barefoot In the Park (1967), Klute (1971), Coming Home (1978), The China Syndrome (1979), 9 to 5 (1980) and On Golden Pond (1981).

Clarence Newman

Oh yeah, Chris McQuarrie. I recommend Klute (1971) (thriller/crime with a detective/neo-noir feel, and has the connection between Sutherland and Fonda). Klute was ahead of its time. Fonda's Oscar well-deserved.

Clay F

A young Jon Hamm there at the Utah Crop Dusting place where we first meet old "Hawk". A sweet movie that I will keep suggesting that is based on true events that is space adjacent is "The Dish"... and it is also 25 in 2025.

Mojo One Thousand

You've got me thinking now, Chris. I just checked Letterbox and I don't see a Favourites section. There's a 'Diary' section, but Cassie hasn't put anything on there. I remember McQuarrie saying that he was in the process of writing reviews of his favourite films on Letterbox, so maybe he's got a favourites list in there too. If not, Cassie's got him and Tom on speed dial so she just needs to ping him for a list.

Clarence Newman

Oh is that what Letterbox is? People ranking their favorite things?

Chris Thom

Klute keeps getting mentioned, Clay, but never a flicker from Cassie, which must be very upsetting for Chris McQuarrie who personally suggested the film to her and probably keeps checking the channel to see if she's watched it. Simple solution? McQuarrie has his own Letterbox page, so Cassie could go in and lift his top 8 and put them on a poll. She could watch Klute anyway and then watch the top 2 from the poll in a Chris McQuarrie Appreciation Week.

Clarence Newman

Enjoyed your reaction. You mentioned Apollo 13 in your outro. I was also thinking Apollo 13 toward the end of the movie (my first full watch), especially when you said you wanted that cheer reaction from the Houston command center (and then it happened). My thought is that Space Cowboys is no Apollo 13, but Space Cowboys does have a stellar cast, each of the 4 with their own charisma. My dad didn't watch much TV/movies, but he liked James Garner (you said you remembered him from Maverick). I watched “The Rockford Files” (TV Series 1974–1980 on NBC) as it aired in the 1970s. The series was “about Jim Rockford [played by JAMES GARNER], an ex-convict-turned-private-investigator who would rather run away than fight and would rather go fishing than work. He isn't a coward, and he isn't lazy -- just rather on the cautious side, that's all.” For Donald Sutherland (R.I.P.) [as you may know, a Canadian actor], M*A*S*H (1970) is his AFI Top 100 movie. But I also like him in "Klute" (1971) w/Jane Fonda who, for her role in Klute, won her first Best Actress Oscar. Sutherland gave a nuanced performance. [Edit: Klute (1971) was apparently recommended to you by Chris McQuarrie, as noted by Clarence in a reply below.] As for the ending in this movie, I was wondering if that image of Hawk laying somewhat propped up the moon (and dead?) was what Frank was picturing in his mind as Frank and his wife looked up at the moon, and not what actually occurred?

Clay F

All I’m going to say is their maybe people from Star Wars in it and they might not be. Same goes for a any Trek cameos 😂😂

Dean Holt

Oh Klute. I still need to see that. I remember that M:I director suggesting it to Cassie at the premiere.

Chris Thom

Sounds like it would be a fun cameo for Carrie Fisher if she shows up. Or Hamill. Can't really picture Harrison Ford making an appearance though.

Chris Thom

She recognized him, first saying Notebook, and then saying Maverick after brief thought. She didn't mention The Great Escape.

Clay F

This keeps reminding me of movies like Last Flag Flying, Last Vegas, and The Bucket List for some reason.

Chris Thom

Chris, I’ve watched around 8 times and still find it very entertaining. To fully appreciate it you have to have seen some of both Trek and Wars, but it’s mainly about a group of Star Wars fans. I personally think it have a good story with a great heart. With quite a few funny moments with some very good cameos. The humour is a bit like Airheads, Wayne’s World and some early Adam Sandler films so just silly comedy really. But it’s one of them films I tend to but on if a need cheering up a bit and it’s never failed.

Dean Holt

I like Sutherland in Klute (1971).

Clay F

Never seen the whole thing but that's what I think of too for some reason. I did see the end of it. And it definitely left an impression.

Chris Thom

Yeah, Dirty Dozen would be cool as well.

Dean Holt

Murphy’s Romance with Sally Field & James Garner is a great one! 👏🏼

Carol Rocha

And this was only 2000. He went at it for a while after that. Also I don't think he ever officially announced retirement? I haven't heard either way.

Chris Thom

James Garner?? “The Notebook” ☺️❤️

Carol Rocha

Been curious if Fanboys was any good. Think it came out like a decade ago?

Chris Thom

+1 for Kelly's Heroes. I would also include The Dirty Dozen (1967), which was another good one for Sutherland.

Clarence Newman

Totally agree

Omar

So glad it sounds like you had fun with this movie. It’s the kind of movie that’s perfect for a rainy or snowy day where you can just kick back and have a blast with it. At first glance, its hard to believe that four aging pilots could take on this mission, let alone finish the training that’s involved for it, but with these four legendary actors, its much easier to suspend your disbelief. Fun fact…when Clint Eastwood took on the role of director, he referred to the movie as “Geezer Power”.

I’ll be giving this a watch later today, but glad to hear it sounds like you like it. Really surprised they didn’t team up on another movie together as they all bounce off each other perfectly. As you could easily see them doing a road movie style comedy with a similar story to another film called Fanboys. Now you’ve see both Star Wars & Star Trek if you watched it you’ll have lots of fun with all the references and cameos, it’s also got a bit of a love story. But to continue with the Eastwood and Sutherland connection. You really need to watch Kelly’s Heroes Sutherland plays one of my favourite characters in cinema history. As he’s a hippie but also a tank commander, I can’t saying anything else as I don’t want to spoil anything.

Cassie now need to watch Kelly’s Heroes as he’s just incredible in that movie.

Would think Pride and Prejudice might come to mind. But yeah probably Hunger Games.

I'll be watching this later in the day, mostly to find out if Cassie recognizes James Garner from The Great Escape and Maverick. She would most likely recognize Donald Southerland from The Hunger Games, but she also saw him in A Time To Kill, but I doubt she would remember that.

Looking forward to this one. Cassie and Carly were always going to love the "grampas doing their thing" trope.

Clarence Newman

Support Your Local Sheriff is a lot of fun.

Clint's kinda been the grumpy old man since he was 42. Same with Tommy Lee Jones. It's their thing.

Chris Thom

Never saw that one. Wondering if Damien Chazelle had to go away for a bit after Babylon.

This is the kind of movie that is in the category of a kick back and have fun at the movies summertime popcorn movie !

+1 for First Man (2018). Ryan Gosling. Claire Foy (an awesome actress).

This was a fun movie with these four legends. There are a few movies with James Garner that I think you'd enjoy: "Support Your Local Sheriff," "Support Your Local Gunfighter," "My Fellow Americans", and "Murphy's Romance". -

Highly recommend "First Man" 2018 about Neil Armstrong 🚀
