Update Alright Alright Alright

Hiya pals!

Well guess what? I made a new year’s resolution to not go to Disney this year, I just wanted to experience something different if we took a vacation. Well I made it 32 days…..fail….My best friend/cousin called and said “we’re going in 4 days, want to come?” The castle calllllllllssss me. So I banked up on reactions, and made a quick trip happen all while surprising the kids this morning. We drove up to their school to drop them off and everything! Such a fun memory already. We are doing two days and then home.

This week we have some fun ones with My Fair lady (two Audrey weeks in a row), Dazed and Confused (what a trip) and the winner of the current 25 in ‘25 Final Poll! (I originally put the wrong end date, it will end in a couple days).

The rest of the month we will continue with our Ape journey, No Way Out from pick-a-flick and MORE! ;) Also, a note, the Face/Off youtube edit still will not pass copyrights for, but the YT edit is here on patreon in case you missed that last week!

We are still working on the voting for the Poppies and will announce the form this week. It’s really coming up!

Happy almost Valentines-it’s fun to celebrate love in all forms and I really LOVE this community and all of you! my heart POPS for you, you make my life BUTTER, and you are a REEL catch!

Thanks a million!

I would say my fair lady is the best out of all these three films

Stephen Hearn

David

As someone that grew up in the seventies and is now dealing with mobility issues and having here of the last few years also dealing with losing my mom and older and younger sister, I have to say that watching movies with you two has really helped with everything going on in my world, so don’t think that you’re just watching movies you’re actually lifting the spirits of some of us out here and I thank you gals very much for this. May God Bless you both and your families. Note; don’t take time with your family, your loved ones for granted, spend the time wisely

CLisa

I like Clockwork Orange just because it's a Kubrick film pretty much and I think his style/voice/ideas/choices are fascinating. But if it's just going to be a slog and general waste of time for Cassie I'd just say 'skip it'.

Chris Thom

My favorite Kubrick film - no lie, I’ve seen it a half dozen times or so. Read the book too.

Richard Maurer

A heavily edited version of A Clockwork Orange was actually shown on TV back in 1971, disclaimer and all. I remember watching it thinking WTF. Never wanted to watch it again.

Joe

Not sure I'm qualified to judge A Clockwork Orange's appropriateness, as I generally disliked the movie. Just seemed weird to me. The only way you could get me to watch it again is if you strapped me down and put a pair of those eye clips in.

Clarence Newman

Killing me? No. I don’t get upset over things that I don’t really expect to happen anyway.

Richard Maurer

And Gladiator 2 is yet another unnecessary sequel. But at least it’s not another unnecessary remake.

Richard Maurer

That one scene isn’t enough to stop Deliverance from being watched, imo. But what about A Clockwork Orange? Similar scene but with significant differences.

Richard Maurer

The name sounds really familiar.

Chris Thom

As I have commented before, I like Gladiator II

Clay F

As great as "The Music Man" is, and has a special connection to you, Byrd N. Hand... Oklahoma with Gordan Macrae and Shirley Jones is a cut above. In fact, most Rogers and Hammerstein musicals are a cut above Gigi and My Fair Lady. And hopefully at some point in 2025 Cassie will give the great Fred Astair a try. It's amazing to think most of his early movies are over 85 years old.

John Liebling

My favorite old school musical is still "The Music Man" -- at least partially because I saw my cousin play Mayor Shinn in a high school production of it, which later led me to be interested in the '62 film adaptation that my parents had recorded off the TV not long after that.

Byrd N. Hand

We'll tell her Deliverance is a bromance...she'll love it, LOL.

Joe

The "Deliverance issue" is one scene, Chris, and Cassie has long since got used to rolling with that. She'd probably look away, but she'd handle it just fine, and the rest of the film is a banging thriller.

Clarence Newman

I'll actually watch a reaction to "Deliverance;" I *won't* watch a reaction to "Gladiator II" (or even the movie itself). 🤐

Byrd N. Hand

Agree. But some are probably right on the line and it's hard to guess what's appropriate or not now. Have been racking my brain trying to figure out if Deliverance can/should be on the channel or not. Some are hard to determine.

Chris Thom

My sister liked Glad II also...makes me question my gene pool. 😆

Joe

In the immortal words of Ariana Grande's butt, "I'm a little behind," so I've only just got around to watching the YT edit of Gladiator 2. My conclusion is this. We should really stop underestimating Cassie and Carly's ability to love films that we think of as Ghost Pepper eye drops. As long as no babies are harmed, and no one hangs themselves butt nekkid in a motel bathroom, they're pretty much up for anything. I thought it was a good reaction, even though it was a double-crust wasabi sandwich they were somehow enjoying.

Clarence Newman

No retribution required. The fact that Cassie is refusing to watch Horror of Dracula is already killing ya.

Clarence Newman

The lights...in the harbor...dont shine for me IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm like a lost ship...adrift on the sea

V M

I wish I owned 1% of Disney.

V M

I have a big story book of all the Classic Disney tales that were turned into movies. Got it at Disney World as a kid. It has the story of Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby, written in phonetically correct spelling. In about the 5th or 6th grade, I told my English teacher about it, and she asked me to bring the book to school. I did and she read the story to our class, minus the southern accent, but still pronouncing the words as written. She gave no explanation of why she was talking like that, and no one understood what was going on. It was one of the weirdest things. Definitely a product of its time, and the way it’s written immediately transports you to that time. It’s a great story too with a terrific Moral.

Larry Darrell

Could totally picture her doing a sing along with the bouncing ball over the lyrics for kids on YouTube.

Chris Thom

While we were only discussing which film had superior makeup effects, I personally also think The Thing is the superior film. I’m also a big fan of Cronenberg, although I prefer his older Indy Canadian made films.

Richard Maurer

Clarence Francis Newman

Richard Maurer

Cassie: we expect you to sing along to the songs in My Fair Lady! Ow, wouldn't it be loverly?😊

Chris Clarke

Although I agree with both of you gentleman, with respect I think you've both missed the point! "The Thing" certainly has ground breaking effects that still impress even today, but the body horror in that movie begins almost immediately out of the gate. Whereas with "The Fly", there's an emotional build up watching Jeff Goldblum lose his mind, long before the physical transformation begins. There's also the context in which both films are presented. Carpenter's classic is a horror absolutely, but there is a strong sense through out the film that ACTION can and will be taken. There's hope (before the ambiguous ending of course). Cronenberg on the other hand presents a heart breaking tragedy! An accident in which the protagonist desperately tries to reverse his error, even beyond the point of no return! Brundle's situation is far more hopeless! Both films are classics of the horror genre. They are both excellent examples of practical effects and story telling in 80's filmmaking, as well as remakes that also reinvent the source material. But Cassie is a sensitive soul and will be affected by "The Fly" just as much as she was by "The Thing", no matter what anyone says. However, having said all of that - she survived "The Shining". If she can do that, she can DO anything!!!!

cfb0453

That's what I love about Dazed and Confused rewatches: I get older, and it stays the same great movie. Alright alright alright

Christopher B.

I’n not much of a judge but I’ve heard that the ladies considered Christopher Lee’s Dracula to be “hot”

Richard Maurer

You are very welcome here Jason. And from the movies you like you are definitely speaking my movie language! 😄

Mike LL

A little trivia for Cassie. You've mentioned in the past how much you enjoyed The Sound of Music. Christopher Plummer played the captain in that film. He was also in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. Before the Sound of Music became a film, it was on Broadway. The person who played the captain on Broadway, was Theodore Bikel. He was an accomplished folk singer and the last song written by Rogers and Hammerstein was Edelweiss, and it was written specifically for Bikel. In Star Trek The Next Generation he played Worf's human father. Bikel also has a small part in My Fair Lady, a part you'll see after the mid-point intermission. Movies of the past usually went 80-90 minutes. Longer movies required a bathroom break. When my dad went to the movies in the 20s and 30s all he had to pay was 6 cents. When my mom went to the movies in the 30s and 40s the cost went all the way up to 10 cents. When I was a preteen in the 60s and part of the 70s I only had to pay a buck fiddty $1.50. Times sure have changed.

John Liebling

I think BS Dracula may have cured her of Dracula movies. In the intro of her reaction to BS Dracula, she said she really liked The Vampire Diaries and was looking forward to a sexy vampire.

Clay F

The first Night Stalker was a TV movie. The series came later.

Richard Maurer

Supposedly she and the director had a disagreement over the white socks in the cafe dance scene. Audrey later admitted he was right.

Thomas Thompson

Pick a Flick is movies only. She does not accept TV Shows for that. I would love to see someone react to Kolchak.

TheSingulatarian

Anyone remember "Savannah Smiles" (1982). A heart-warming movie about a sad little girl who finds her smile when she meets two very unlikely characters . Would love to see the ladies react to it.

Jeffery Parks

Audrey shows off her dancing chops in Funny Face! Trained in ballet…

Catherine LW

Yes, Chris, they are a lovely family and I enjoy watching their travels! I saw the Dollywood visit by Jolly, the two Brits and they had a great time. They’re hilarious!

Catherine LW

Dazed and Confused was just like my high school in the 70’s without the hazing, thankfully. 😶‍🌫️

Catherine LW

Splash...YES. That's my favorite too! My sister went to Cal Poly for college so we used to eat there sometimes. It is indeed amazing clam chowder. Line was always long though.

Chris Thom

I see a poll called Hammer film’s Dracula movies starring Christopher Lee. That would be 7 choices.

Richard Maurer

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure of "everything" since I've only been watching on YouTube for the last couple of years. I would LOVE to see her and Cassie watch "Before Sunrise" - another Linklater film - and, if they liked it, the sequels. Other than that, my taste would be VERY old fashioned - I think they both would also love "The Lady Eve," "The Palm Beach Story," and "The Miracle at Morgan's Creek" by Preston Sturges, from the 1940s, three of the best romantic/screwball comedies ever made.

Jason Scott

My Fair Lady is one of my all-time favourite movies. It was one my mum and I watched all the time with my grandma.

Stardust_and_Madness

I just don't see a poll option for Dracula movies. I'm tempted to enter " The Night Stalker" (1972) as my PaF next month.

Joe

Your credibility is decreasing at a phenomenal rate.

Richard Maurer

Well, while we're on this, I'm going to highly recommend Robert Altman's magum opus "Nashville" -- one of the best films that hasn't been reacted to at all on YT.

Byrd N. Hand

Internet Archive has a pretty good copy if you really want to see it. https://archive.org/details/Songofthesouth4K

TheSingulatarian

Alfie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfHhjuQsVFg

TheSingulatarian

Not at all. I think the papier-mache octopus in Love Actually was peak artistry. The Thing, not so much.

Clarence Newman

So you admit you have no idea what you’re talking about? ;-)

Richard Maurer

And more of a mystery. What is Of all about!?!

Richard Maurer

There you go. Far more benign.

Clarence Newman

The things they could do with papier-mache. 😀

Clarence Newman

Of: the Movie

Richard Maurer

If you remove the word "Dracula" aswell, Cassie might watch it.

Clarence Newman

The Fly makeup is much easier than The Things’ effects. In The Fly they were just applying makeup to a living actor (except at very end of the movie). In The Thing they were mostly creating whole creatures from the ground up, much harder to do and still have it look real .

Richard Maurer

Of course, Guinness also played an Arab in "Lawrence of Arabia." Obviously people generally weren't as concerned with an actor being the right race/ethnicity for a character back then as they are now. Again, I feel people need to become more aware of the term 'product of its time' before passing judgment on a movie/TV series through a modern day lens. Of course, a more recent accusation of racism has come from Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza," where -- well, I won't spoil it, but it's presented in a rather absurdist way, yet some people seemed to take it seriously... 🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

Horror of Dracula is just called Dracula outside the US. At the time it came out (1958) Universal still owned the rights to the film title Dracula in the US.

Richard Maurer

Sure, and I'm not criticizing the special effects in The Thing. I recently watched Jason and the Argonauts and I was still impressed with the giant statue that comes to life. The difference is that the effects in The Thing "look" like special effects (so I find it easy to detach.) Seth Brundle "looks" like a diseased, mutant monster, so detaching from the story is harder. To me (a Rhinestone-loving horror muggle), that's the essence of great horror. At no time do you get to point a finger and say "I can see the zip up his back." Also interesting to note that there's only 4 years between The Thing and The Fly.

Clarence Newman

D'uh! Of course I meant to say Cassie! I won't edit my post. I'll leave my blunder up to persist until the end of the Internet itself!!

Mike LL

As for the spider-head thing (and the other effects pieces) you need to look at them in the context of their time. Back in 1982 nothing like that had ever really been put on film before, but they’ve been much imitated since. In fact some film critics of that time said the film went too far (they were obviously wrong).

Richard Maurer

Yes I accept that Rooney was playing the character as written and this was pretty mainstream for the time, and for a couple of decade after that. Things only stared to change slowly. In 1984 the great David Lean’s film adaptation of A Passage to India cast Alec Guinness as Professor Godbole. Not long after the release of the film he talked of his discomfort at being cast in the role but that David Lean was such a high status director who insisted he was right for the role. In the end Guinness’s discomfort comes across in his performance even though it was a very sympathetic portrayal of the character and it is a moot point as to whether every character should be played by an actor as close to their ethnicity, gender, sexuality etc, as possible, after all acting is pretending to be someone else, so maybe I just need to get over it and watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s without getting hung up about this. Mr Yunioshi will always be, in my eyes, a pointlessly annoying character but I can cope with that.

Kevin McClure

I defer. As a layman, though, I think the use of scary music to compliment Jeff's creepy conversations with Geena ("I'll hurt you if you stay") are a big enhancement to the existing sense of menace. I also thought some of the horror visuals in The Thing (the face that turns into the spider thing, for example) were a bit too obvious to be scary. I didn't get that feeling with Jeff in his Fly makeup.

Clarence Newman

Clarence - As a horror fan I have to say neither the music or makeup in The Fly were superior to The Thing.

Richard Maurer

Chris - the Disneyland clam chowder wasn’t the best for me. For New England clam chowder I really love Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach. That’s the best one that I’ve tried so far… Also this talk of food/movies/Disneyland is reminding me of JOLLY + Zach King’s convo at Costco. https://youtu.be/pOCvPpjimNo?si=DRXjR-Z_l6RYs7ph I’m still waiting for Jolly to take up Zach’s rec to do a Disneyland food review. They’ve already done Dollywood.

Rose

As for excessive and blatant use of exclamation points, I’m reminded of an article I read once about movie censorship. I don’t recall the movie, but the line was a woman shouting at a man: “Pig! Pig! Pig! Pig! Pig! Pig!” When the script came back from the Censor board, the comment they’d written was, “Delete two pigs.”

Clarence Newman

The Fly is a bit worse than The Thing, mainly because of superior makeup, music and Jeff Goldblum’s superb performance. I don’t think it would hurt Cassie outside of the actual movie, though (meaning that a couple of Ted Lasso episodes afterwards would negate any nightmares). I wouldn’t be pushing it if I thought otherwise.

Clarence Newman

Yes, if she made it through "The Thing," she can definitely make it through "The Fly." I don't know who's poisoning her against it, but they need to stop. 😒 (Lest we need to be reminded, she also reneged on her promise to watch "Invsaion of the Body Snatchers" last October...)

Byrd N. Hand

Those fast passes they have now are a joke. SOOOO expensive. Not worth it to me. Especially for a family.

Philip Alan

Back in the day, Big Thunder Ranch BBQ was so goood! My favorite spot. 2nd favorite was the friend chicken off main street. I tried Salt & Straw for the first time not too long ago. Delish.

Philip Alan

Honestly, even if Yunioshi *had* been played by an actual East Asian actor, I feel he still would've come off like a caricature mostly because of the way the character was written. 🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

I distinctly remember that we watched "Song of the South" in elementary school one year, before the whole controversy started, obviously. I found a copy of it online a few years back and watched it again for the first time since then... and I honestly really don't know what the fuss is all about. I didn't find it racist at all. It's post-Civil War, so the black people aren't slaves anymore. Uncle Remus is easily the most endearing character in the whole thing. All I can think of is Brer Rabbit's and Brer Fox's dialects, which sound like somewhat stereotypical black Southerners? 🤷‍♂️ Either way, people need to learn to better understand the term 'PRODUCT OF ITS TIME' and not judge everything through a modern day lens. 🙄

Byrd N. Hand

#ReleaseSongoftheSouth - let Uncle Remus live. Stop erasing the past. *and in doing so we also forget James Baskett’s legacy. (Luckily you can watch it on archive.org).

Rose

Spoiler alert...Cassie, get ready for a 3+ minute intro to My Fair Lady, before the actual dialog begins, and you'll enjoyed this movie more in your studio setting. It's a great musical, but Oklahoma is even better. I hope you give that movie a try. It's also far more romantic.

John Liebling

Lots of great food at Disneyland Chris. My niece likes to go just for the food, including the clam chowder. There is a great documentary on the Disney channel about the food at Disneyland which explains the origin of their most famous dishes. If you can't make it to the park anytime soon and you like ice cream (I know it is cold there now, but later) please try Salt & Straw. They ship nationwide and their flavors are amazing. Their parlor at Disneyland is a favorite. https://saltandstraw.com/

Steve Holton

I think you meant to say 'Cassie' at the beginning of your post.

Chris Thom

Whenever it gets super cold up here I get super hungry for some reason and all this food sounds amazing right now. I've actually heard multiple people say Disneyland's clam chowder was the best they'd ever had.

Chris Thom

Really don't remember much about it. But always figured if the company were still using all the animated characters it couldn't be that bad. I do know that Zippity Do Da song is completely timeless. Seriously hope no one is going after that.

Chris Thom

Even Whoopi wants the movie back..

Rose

Lighten up, Francis.

2-Can

I see a few people mentioning the Disney trip and Splash Mountain. I'm sensing a need for a Song of the South (1946) reaction. It would likely need to be Patreon exclusive because I think if anybody had the guts to do a reaction, Disney would hard strike them in a second.

Mike Lemon

Actually had a weird dream last month where Cassie invited this comment section to that giant pool at Hearst Castle to watch a movie on floaties. Lol. It was fun. Steve did flippy high dives into the pool for us. Carmel is beautiful too. I remember that movie Play Misty For Me shot there.

Chris Thom

@Richard -- ditto. I will use an exclamation point(s) in reply to someone who used them and match the number of exclamation points they used.

Clay F

Dolly Parton is awesome. +1 for “Coal Miner’s Daughter”

Clay F

I think Mickey Rooney was fantastic in “The Black Stallion” (1979). He got an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor. Also part of it was filmed in Toronto, Canada. One of the best films ever made.

Rose

THE movie for Valentine's Day. lol

Chris Thom

Tommy's is good, but very messy!

Steve Holton

:D I actually seen Tommy’s everywhere and never tried it. I always go to The Hat for my chili cravings (i.e., chili cheese fries). I should try it. There’s practically one near my house. That “Hot Fudge Sundae” story - classic! Only in L.A.

Rose

Speaking of TN I would suggest that Cassie react to Sissy Spacek’s Oscar-winning performance for Best Actress in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (1980) with Tommy Lee Jones. Her portrayal of the late country legend, Loretta Lynn, is a must-see.

Rose

Hearst Castle is so gorgeous. I have to visit again soon. The views … and the Neptune pool! The historic Hearst-owned Topanga Ranch Motel was destroyed in the Palisades fire. Hope that never happens to Hearst Castle. I also wished they’d passed thru Solvang and Carmel. Nadine wanted to see celebrities - a Clint Eastwood sighting would have been super cool. Dana Point to Leggett is my absolute favorite drive - Big Sur is the prettiest stretch - and I always have to split that road trip in half. My nerves during the intense foggy winding sections had me so tense that I was flat out exhausted and couldn’t enjoy the drive once the fog cleared. I’m calling shotgun for next time.

Rose

Of those four films Rhinestone should come in a distant fourth.

Richard Maurer

Sadly Rhinestone might actually win.

Richard Maurer

But Cassie has already watched "The Thing". What's the difference?

cfb0453

In fact they are going to have to work very hard to stay alive!! …now do you understand?! Because if you don’t… I’ll kill ya. 😂 Hmmm what movie could that be? She needs to see that one Clarence.

Mark White

Yes Rose, as with most local attractions anywhere, most people only go when they have friends visiting from out of town. Though I saw a video the other day about the foods that originated in Southern California: French dip sandwiches, chili burgers (Tommy's), smoothies (Orange Julius), Bok dogs, California roll, Cobb salad and the hot fudge sundae. Suddenly I wanted to go on a local food tour! The hot fudge sundae story was great. Some folks were upset locals were ditching church for soda shops, so they made it illegal to serve any soda on Sundays. To get around this Sunday law, soda shop owners took the chocolate syrup out of the soda, poured it on ice cream, and called it a "Hot Fudge Sundae"

Steve Holton

Welcome Jason to the best little corner on the web. You are definitely in the right place for anything film and the best reactor on the tube. I will be keeping a eye out for your comments on our movie based discussions. Do you have any films you would like to see Cassie react to?

Mark White

Yeah I was bummed they missed Hearst Castle. But apparently doing the whole Highway One is pretty much unheard of nowadays. Bummer. I did it a few times and it was maybe my favorite road trip ever.

Chris Thom

I haven’t been to Disneyland in 2 decades. Sometimes driving on the 5 and seeing the Matterhorn or the fireworks at night makes me very nostalgic. Now I just live vicariously thru Cassie on her IG stories/post.

Rose

Thanks Chris - like I said, happy to answer any questions.

Jason Scott

Anybody tries to burgle Cassie, I'll kill ya. Anybody cuts in line when she's queuing for the Space Mountain ride, I'll kill ya. Anybody calls me Francis....I'll kill ya.

Clarence Newman

I think Catherine also follows the the NZ fam, Chris. That was an incredible trip! I hope they can come back soon and do some east coast stuff. *Oh wait, they should come back and do that stretch on Highway 1 in Big Sur that they missed bc of the Paul’s Slide/Regent’s Slide. (Sam should fully realize his dream road trip). That’s one of my favorite parts of the entire Highway 1.

Rose

Here in the comments it's mostly us. She checks in every once in a while, but not that much. Here it's mostly about us and our thoughts and communicating with each other.

Chris Thom

I wanna go there.

Clarence Newman

Yes, Chris. It gets even more expensive on peak use days. On the plus side, the VIP pass can include several people, so the expense can be shared to a point.

Steve Holton

One of the channels I follow just recently went their on suggestion. The New Zealand Family. They did a big loop this summer in an RV from Malibu up to Seattle over to Yellowstone, then back down to Grand Canyon and Vegas. Then back to San Diego, and flew over to TN for Dollywood and Nashville for the 4th. Then finished in Texas. They had a great time. Fun channel if you haven't seen it. Nice family.

Chris Thom

I think I saw that referenced somewhere. It's over $900 if I heard correctly.

Chris Thom

Rhinestone was unappreciated in its time. And in ours. I suggest a poll: Rhinestone Horror of Dracula Your Name Show Me Love Try betting on that one!

Clarence Newman

She included The Fly on a poll last October, but then disabled the button that allows you to vote for it. ("Yes, you did, Brett!")

Clarence Newman

Agree it's difficult to find an uncrowded day at Disneyland these days. There is a VIP service for reservations where your crew is guided through the park by a "Plaid" (A person in a plaid uniform) and provided quick, cut the line, access to rides. However, the VIP service is expensive. Maybe why some analysts suggested the stock was a buy today, and were bullish on the park performance.

Steve Holton

FWIW, my dad worked at Disneyland and Disney Studios in the 70s/80s; it's hard for me to process what the theme parks have become these days, I haven't been in years. Fun fact: I was in the Disneyland official guide book - a picture with Pluto - for about 15 years.

Jason Scott

I am always happy to answer questions, but I don't want to hijack the attention from our host.

Jason Scott

For Disneyland can you buy extra fast-passes or whatever the system is now? Not sure fast-pass even exists anymore. But is there anything similar?

Chris Thom

@Richard. Don't mimic. Don't change. Ever.

Philip Alan

meh, the crowds at Disneyland are ridiculous still. I used to be an annual pass holder for decades, but stopped around 2017. The reservation system can go kick rocks. I only go for photo sessions now. Or when they have cool Star Wars rides open! (Resistance)

Philip Alan

Have you been to Dollywood? It’s fantastic and family friendly.

Catherine LW

Welcome Jason! Glad you are here and look forward to your insights on this film and many others.

Steve Holton

🪰🪰🪰 Pleeazze!!!!!

cfb0453

I hope you meant that for the whole channel because I will definitely be asking as many questions as I can get away with. lol

Chris Thom

@ Chris - there are plenty of movies that I’d be excited to see, it’s just that most of them aren’t mainstream movies. I was in my twenties during the 80’s, the cheesy era of film.

Richard Maurer

@Clay - I use exclamation points either in a sarcastic or ironic way - almost exclusively.

Richard Maurer

Think the trip was planned for Valentine's Day.

Chris Thom

i have been interested in DAZED AND CONFUSED for a while, but just never got around to it. I love Richard Linklater (he's one of my favorite filmmakers) and BOYHOOD is an absolutely brilliant film, but alas (though he has been nominated more than once) Linklater has yet to win an Oscar.

Stick Figure Studios

I mean no one has to have THAT many exclamation points. lol. But I am curious if there are movies from your childhood or teens or 20's that you were truly excited to see? Or had you feeling something approaching happiness? I know 'happy' is kind of an ambiguous term but you get what I mean.

Chris Thom

Dazed and Confused is worth seeing I think. Very much a 'slice of life, time and space' kind of movie. Mostly about the vibes, similar to American Graffiti in that way. Linklater is a fun director, and an Oscar winner now I think? Boyhood was really good too. Pretty sure that's what he won for.

Chris Thom

I think Slacker was his first big Austin movie. Never knew where Dazed and Confused was filmed but I assumed it was around there.

Chris Thom

Saw that pop up on one of the streamers the other night. Was debating starting it.

Chris Thom

Keep dreaming Clarence!!! (like how I’m using so many exclamation points lately? I’m told it shows positive enthusiasm!!!)

Richard Maurer

I would figure she has a good security system. And a few neighbor friends to keep an eye out.

Joe

My selections are funny, Clarence “Rhinestone” Newman? Then you have the nerve to ask me to switch back to Space Cowboys? All I have to say to that is GO Frequency!

Richard Maurer

I was the "Unit Publicist" - and you can read all about the making of the film in Melissa Maerz' book: https://www.amazon.com/Alright-History-Richard-Linklaters-Confused/dp/0062908502. Also, for the record since I am new here, I am a film professor and historian, so always happy to answer film-related questions.

Jason Scott

Agreed, Milt. (But you spelt 'days' wrong.)

Clarence Newman

I haven't seen Frequency and I really want Space Cowboys to win, but so many people like Frequency I now want Cassie to watch that one too.

Clarence Newman

It's too soon, we need to leave it a couple of years to let the wounds heal...

Milton William Burray

As for the film that cannot be mentioned, I believe it is my duty to inform Cassie that THE FULL MONTY would be the highlight of her February if she watched it. I make no judgements beyond my judgement, which is accurate to within 97.3%.

Clarence Newman

Runner up from a poll from a while back, eh? I like this is a motif. You know what else was a poll runner-up a while back? The Fly! I think Cassie's fixing to treat us.

Clarence Newman

Hopefully you have already gone and returned. Best not to post vacation plans on social media as it attracts burglars.

TheSingulatarian

I'm not sure about fair and realistic opinions, Mark, but Richard's selections are certainly funny as Hell. And quit encouraging him to abandon his makeover. At the very least, he needs to change....his vote back to Space Cowboys.

Clarence Newman

Running Scared is cool

Milton William Burray

Definitely Cliffhanger and Red Heat. I'd also throw in Running Scared for some light relief.

Clarence Newman

In high school in 1980, I was Jimmy Carter in a debate with 2 other students (as Reagan, Anderson) on stage in front of the student body. I love Dazed and Confused, but can see how some may not get into it -- maybe the pacing or content -- I don't know.

Clay F

"Space Cowboys" and "Frequency" were the last 2 standing in those 25 in '25 polls?? I know she's already seen some of the heavier hitters from that year ("Gladiator," "Memento," "Crouching Tiger," "Erin Brockovich," "Unbreakable," etc.), but really? 🤦‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

"Dazed and Confused" is basically a '70s "American Graffiti," if that means anything to you. Hopefully she also watches that one one of these days.

Byrd N. Hand

That’s so cool Jason! If you don’t mind me asking, what was it you did on the movie?

Mark White

Really looking forward to DAZED AND CONFUSED because I worked on it! (Seriously, my name is in the credits and everything.) It was one of the best experiences of my life; we had our 30th anniversary reunion last fall.

Jason Scott

Wilfred Hyde White was also in the original Battlestar Galactica, from the same producer as Buck Rogers. One of the "Council of The Twelve".

Chris Clarke

Don’t worry friends I have no plans to change - doubt if I could if I wanted to. But thanks for the support!

Richard Maurer

Two thumbs up for a watch of both Space Cowboys and Frequency.

Dan M

Nine Months IS great, and totally tender, and perfect for February. Just sayin as well 😊

Dan M

Amen!

Dan M

Getting rid of Splash Mountain was a travesty.

Dan M

Richard, to quote Team America, "You have balls, I like balls". Two Audrey Hepburn movies in one month.... lord have mercy, that ain't right. 😆

Joe

I’m all in for that suggestion.

Dan M

You’re not on your own here, Chris 🤛

Dan M

Don’t change who you are for the sake of other Patrons, Richard. Your comments are usually ones that I look forward to reading regardless of what the post is about. Keep it real.

Dan M

😂Good effort Richard! 😂😂

Mark White

It was just the 68 OG for me, never had interest in any of the other ape movies, old or new. Looking forward to Space Cowboys, Frequency I never really cared for. She'll probably watch both.

Joe

Cliff/Hanger

Milton William Burray

Hope there’s no grouse at house of mouse! May the crowds be summoned elsewhere this week. 🏰 Was helping on a Disney summer internship application last night. It is the applicant’s happy place too. Better luck with other resolutions. 😊 Looking forward to fair ladies, dazed confusion and orbiting cowboys. Have a great mini-vacation! 👍

Steve Holton

@ Mark. Thanks for the support. But I still think I could try a little harderI to mimic the tone of some of the other posts here. Dazed and Confused is Amazing!!!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!! And Audrey Hepburn is such an Icon!! I Love her so much!!!! Owwwwww….. not doing that again. It caused me actual, physical pain to write that.

Richard Maurer

Cassie, enjoy Disneyworld/land. I’ve never been so I can’t comment. But have a great time, you deserve it. Another line up of great movies. I’m looking forward to more ape movies, especially if you are watching the original sequels?! I just got round to watching “Faceoff” great reaction. If you like 90s action, which it looks like you really do! You need to get In “Cliffhanger” with Stallone and I recommend “Red Heat” (80s) as you really like buddy cop movies. Schwarzenegger and Jim belushi are funny together. Also you say “and MORE!” Does this mean, the person who shall not be mentioned! (I don’t want to reignite that fire!😆) movie, from pick a flick, we are getting the movie that shall not be mentioned?! Anyways, thank you for being awesome and keeping us all so entertained. Your the best ❤️

Mark White

Nope, not having that Richard! You give Realistic, fare, honest opinions and you and Clarence are funny as hell! 😆 But not Negative!

Mark White

Agreed Joe, come on Cassie, you love your 90’s action flicks! “Under siege” or “Cliffhanger” this year please?!

Mark White

Looking forward to seeing these reactions. Have a great time at Disneyland. I've only ever been to Disney world, but I had a blast there!

clutchkman

Loved your message at the end Carly and your clever wordplay. All I can say is that you are my favorite reactor, you are just BUTTER than everyone else! My Fair Lady will be a very fun watch. One of the better musicals. Space Cowboys (I'm assuming it will win), I think you will love. And I will finally get a chance to watch Dazed and Confused in all it's entirety. I gave it a shot one time, and I didn't get that far into it. Wasn't my cup of tea. And I was the high school class of 1976. Voted for my first president, Jimmy Carter, later that year. The movie seemed plotless to me, and I like a movie to have a story at least. If anyone wants to tell me that some things happen later in the movie that gives it some kind of structure or form, or whatever, please don't, I don't want to know. It'll be a spoiler to me, I want to go into it blind like Cassie. I won't read it anyway, 😛.

Mike LL

The Audrey Hepburn films will be fun. Dazed and Confused is a film I would have liked more when I was a younger man. But seeing as I didn’t see it until later in life it’s just okay as far as I’m concerned. I’m trying to be a little more positive because I’ve been told I’m too negative but I’m afraid this is as good as it gets.

Richard Maurer

My Fair Lady 👎 Dazed & Confused 👎 Space Cowboys 🤜

Milton William Burray

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years Cassie, once you’ve been to the happiest/most magical place on earth (depending on whether it’s Disneyland or Walt Disney World) you can never deny yourself the opportunity to go back. Nor should you. Enjoy the trip and the time away with your family.

Dan M

It's always a vibe watching Dazed & Confused. Excited to watch with Cassie while blazed

Danny

Love Dazed and Confused

nick bell

Very curious to see how you reacted to dazed and confused.

Alex Gorell

What are her Apes plans? Is she going straight to the most recent four (and counting?) movie series? Hopefully she's going to avoid that awful Tim Burton movie. I don't think I've ever even heard of someone liking that one. I did like Danny Elfman's score in it though, but it's a real slog otherwise.

Stranger2Reality

I am all for the Audrey Hepburn films, My Fair Lady is fun. I know Hepburn’s performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is iconic and I am not at all over sensitive to how peoples are represented in older films but I think that many may find Mickey Rooney’s Mr Yunioshi a little bit hard to take.

Kevin McClure

5-8 inches that night…😬

Anthony Carlson

Looking forward to dazed and confused. Best McConaughey role

Canadianant

Looking forward to Dazed & Confused! And have the BEST time at Disney!

kaiielle

DAZED ANC CONFUSED I can't comment on knowledgeably because I've never actually seen it, but I love MY FAIR LADY. It's not exactly great cinema (though it did win best picture) because it can never really get away from is theatrical roots, but it is a decent addition of the wonderful stage musical. The cart is mostly intact (with Rex Harrison a particular standout), but Julia Andrews was replaced by Audrey Hepburn Bennett the studio felt Julie couldn't carry as film on her own (although, ironically, another movie studio headed by a certain Walt Disney that can't great cast her in the type Roger of as soon called MARY POPPINS, which won Andrews an Oscar). Audrey is radiant, but she unfortunately doesn't do much of her own singing (unbeknownst to her, they dubbed much of her voice with the silently talented Marni Nixon and the transitions are not seamless). Still, is charming, funny, sweet and has not only summer of the best costumes ever to grace the silver screen but some of the best music too. I predict you will love it. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

You are a Disney fan. Glad for the continuing of the Ape journey this month, and looking forward to No Way Out. Pumped about "Dazed and Confused" (1993). Takes place in Austin. The director Richard Linklater [who also directed Before Sunrise (1995) and School of Rock (2003)] did a good job capturing the 70's in that setting in Texas (and could be in other states or Canada, etc.). Great soundtrack. Linklater lives just outside of Austin. My son lives in Austin and saw Linklater in an Austin grocery store last year -- and said no one in the store seemed to recognize Linklater. I went to a Linklater-owned indie like movie theater (only 2 screens) in Austin, which was cool.

Clay F

Keep your eyes on Henry Cavill and his Warhammer 40K Cinematic Universe, cause all indicators suggest that we'll hear about the first instalment in the franchise within a year's time. The Emperor Protects!

Robert N Douglass

Just a few My Fair Lady facts. You said you had already started it. So even if you finished it maybe you will enjoy them. Julie Andrews played Eliza on the Broadway stage. But Jack Warner wanted a bigger star for the movie. He hired Hepburn who could sing but not to the level of Julie Andrews. This left Andrews free to star in Mary Poppins for which she won the Academy Award. She probably would have won for MFL but, the world will never know. I've stated before that Audrey was dubbed by Marni Nixon for all but a few seconds of her songs. Many people know this. What is not as well know is Jeramy Brett who played Freddy was also dubbed for his singing. He would latter go on to play Sherlock Holmes in a long running British television show. When Audrey found out she was being dubbed she stormed off of the set but returned the next day contrite and ready to work. The dress that Audry wears to the horse races is clearly an inspiration for the dress that Rose wears when she first arrives at the docks in "Titanic". Rex Harrison had done the role of Henry Higgins on Broadway but Jack Warner once again wanted a bigger star and offered the part to Cary Grant. Grant said that if the part was not given to Harrison he Grant would not bother to see the movie. Warner relented and gave the part to Harrison. Rex Harrison really could not sing. The Broadway producers convinced Harrison that he could be taught to "speak on pitch" which Harrison did to rousing success. One scene in the movie that always impressed me is when in the foreground Higgins and Colonel Pickering are congratulating each other on their great success singing "You Did It" your attention is still drawn to Audry Hepburn in the background looking a bit confused, then hurt and then angry that she is getting none of the credit at all. Wilfred Hyde White who played Coronel Pickering had a varied career for another twenty years. One of the TV shows he worked on was called the "The Associates" which also starred a pre-SCTV Martin Short. It was cancelled after 1/2 a season even though it was written and directed by veterans of the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Taxi. You can find it on You Tube if you want to have a look. The other show he appeared on was the 2nd season of Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century for which he was a bit of an odd fit. The ending of MFL is different from George Bernard Shaw's book. In the book Eliza does run off with Freddy. It makes sense as Professor Higgins is a bit of an ass. But the audience wanted them to get together. My Fair Lady is just about a perfect film. Every department at Warner Brothers was operating at the top of their game. The 4 hour run time flies by. One of my favorite movies.

TheSingulatarian

Yeah, I just saw that. I have a funeral to go to Thursday morning. We're supposed to get a least a foot in Michigan

Katie Jackson

I was class of 1981 (a high school in Texas). While Dazed & Confused takes place in Austin, the movie is applicable to any of the 50 States and Canada, etc. Great soundtack.

Clay F

The castle calllllllllssss me. lol. Enjoy your time at Disneyland

V M

A little confused. Yes, blue and gold were our school colors (as well as the colors of nearby UC Berkeley, aka Cal). Are they also the school colors in the show Yellowjackets? That would be wild, though I realize that there are a lot of schools with the same mascot and colors, as well as several Berkeley High Schools. I haven't seen that show yet.

#SinglesAwarenessRepresent

Michael Enos

I just watched We Live In Time last night, it's a recent release with Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh...it was such a beautiful film and I would hope Cassie gets to see it whether off or on the channel. Bring the tissues.

Michael Enos

Were you Blue and Gold at your high school? Immediately thinking of that new show with the girls' team and the plane crash. lol. That show is wild.

Chris Thom

Planet of the Apes between Working Girl and My Fair Lady is kind of wild. lol

Chris Thom

The new thing looks alright with the new music. But a good update of Splash would've been better.

Chris Thom

Splash Mountain did nothing wrong. Blind idiocy killed it.

Mark Vaderr

Supposedly they're getting a slick new ride for the island, but yeah it does kind of suck. Definitely part of the charm. The one at Disneyland used to have a giant waterfall on it but it just fell apart or something. That was sad too. And over-hauling maybe their most famous ride is really kind of a wtf moment. Will never forget that song though.

Chris Thom

My regards to everyone else who's on their own on Valentine's. 🤜

Chris Clarke

Well I'm here for dazed & confused hopefully I don't miss your reaction to it. And I got heart warm by telling us we are a catch and ssshhhhhhhhh don't tell your #1Ben that I said that. Enjoy your day Mrs. Cassie.

FranciscoGios

PPOTM? Should be "Under Siege" for sure, LOL.

Joe

It just occurred to me that I didn't specify that the Hepburn movie I was referring to was Breakfast at Tiffany's - though come to think of it both B@T and My Fair Lady are about an attempt at upward mobility that addresses class and cultural differences of their respective periods - somehow that never occurred to me before...

jdj830

Hoping your watching runner up of 25 poll too, like you usually do. Would be a big disappointment to miss FREQUENCY

Seymor Butz

Getting rid of Splash Mountain did suck. End of an Era. I also read a little while back, DisneyWorld was getting rid of Tom Sawyer’s Island. My childhood is disappearing. :-(

Larry Darrell

Oh cool so it's soon.

Chris Thom

Not yet. It will open on May 22nd this year.

Anthony Carlson

Is the Epic thing open already?

Chris Thom

I'm class of of 1979 (Berkeley High School - go Yellow Jackets!) but my sister was class of '76. the same class depicted in Dazed and Confused, so I was close enough to what she was up to that I can attest that D&C is the most accurate high school movie AND the most accurate '70s movie I have ever seen. I don't think I've ever been as excited to see Cassie's reaction to a movie! And I'm happy about the other selections too. I was born in 1961 in New York and my mom's life was a bit like Audrey Hepburn's character in that movie - not a happy story. The movie's got issues, but 1961 had issues. Despite its many flaws and offensive stereotypes and deviations from the book, even in its artifice, it, too, is weirdly accurate as to the vibe of the lost souls of America in the early 60s. And I think you're going to love your Ape journey, though once again I'm going to keep lobbying for 2001...

jdj830

We got a big snow storm coming on Wednesday. Can’t wait to drive back home that day…🙄

Anthony Carlson

Oh geez they found a way to make that hat even more intense in the poster. It's extending out through space and time now. Doesn't seem like a very practical, work-friendly kind of hat...but it is pretty! And hey if you want to be a Disney geek you fly that freak-flag HIGH. You bring us the goods on the regular...castle trips abound. That was the deal I think. Wish I could go to Disneyland or universal. Only eight hours drive away and I haven't been since 2006. Only been to the Adventure in the Parking Lot Land thing once. I know things have changed a bit since (did feel weirdly nostalgic about that giant parking lot though). Ditching Splash Mountain might be unforgiveable in my view. Anyways have fun. Really wasn't expecting Dazed and Confused? But alright alright alright.

Chris Thom

You can always try Universal Studios…but anyway, 👍

Anthony Carlson

Here here, well said old timer!

Frank Edwards

Yes we should! A big thank you to Cassie and Company

Louisa Moritz

"My Fair Lady" is a great movie. Watched it many times. Hope you watch "Funny Face" one day.

William Brownlee

I'd buy that for a dollar!

David Bockly

Thank you, Cassie, as we who should be thanking you for all the joy you bring into our lives.

Sam Wilson

Let's see how many actors she recognizes.

Rick Rodriguez

I love Dazed and Confused. My mom was a senior in High School the year this movie takes place & said it was pretty accurate. Hope you have a great time at Disney World/Land. I've never been but your pics have always been amazing to see. We still have a lot of February left so, I'm hoping for a Modern Rom Com besides Working Girl. Enjoy your trip P.S. You haven't used your Popcorn Pick Of The Month yet. . .curious what you'll pick. Still think Nine Months is great 🤷‍♀️ just sayin🤞😄

Katie Jackson

A bunch of great options coming up.

Joel Wayne

Cassie, you can't expect us to take a resolution like that all too seriously. Disneyland is the best! Looking forward to My Fair Lady, are both you and Carly watching? I really hope that when you get back to Apes, that you will have reconsidered your plans and will continue watching the original series, before you get to the new series. Best wishes to you and your family.

Mark Vaderr

Dazed and Confused!! Finally!! Sounds like you watched it already. I wonder if you wondered about the hazing rituals? ICYDK, They were actually based on real practices that the writer/director experienced in his hometown Huntsville, Texas. There have been similar practices in other towns all across the country. The whole film was based on his childhood years. Really, Really looking for to this. I also wonder if the Music made any impression on you. I know you must have a musical bone somewhere ;-) Lastly, here’s to hoping 🤞you watch the Top Two 25 in ‘25. Space Cowboys and Frequency are both so great. It was REALLY HARD to pick between them. Have a Safe Trip :-)

Larry Darrell

No Way Out is great fun and suspense and looking forward to the new popcorn to go. PS there’s no such thing as to much Audrey Hepburn.

Thomas Thompson

Sounds like a blast 💥! Up here in Regina it’s -30 something lol 😂 Never seen dazed 🥴, looking forward to seeing it! 🙂

Jason Henderson

If you like My Fair Lady you’ll love Funny Face.

Thomas Thompson

Dazed and Confused: terrific soundtrack, an absolutely amazing cast. Discussed it with my dad who was about the same age as the characters in the movie in the year it takes place and he said it was very accurate but I also feel parts of it are timeless and reflect my time in high school in the early 2000s as well

Choof

Geez Cassie breaking resolutions already. Have fun and maybe you can find another resolution to break 🙂

David Freese

Dazed and Confused is phenomenal, hope you enjoy it.

Stranger2Reality

I cannot be more happy about Dazed and Confused. Outstanding.

R F.

Can't wait for Dazed and Confused! Favorite movie of all time!

Benny Kuster

God bless honey

Rosario Cicero

There's still time to watch Your Name for love month 🙏🏼

Philip G.

Yes!!! Dazed and confused. One of the best soundtracks of a movie ever.
