[YT Edit] Gladiator II (2024)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for Gladiator II, which will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] Gladiator II (2024)

Comments

Yeah I doubt she would 'get it'. I don't think I really get it either. But it's a striking movie. Plus she loves classical music. Oh she doesn't? Well there's some good eyeliner work in it at least. And the color orange.

Chris Thom

Carly mentioned how she can't see Russell Crowe as anyone but Maximus in "Gladiator", which reminded me: PLEASE watch "The Nice Guys" (2016) starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Russell Crowe will always be Maximus to you, but he played an incredible private investigator and had a hilarious odd-couple buddy-cop partnership with Ryan Gosling's character. I'm 100% certain that both Cassie and Carly will enjoy "The Nice Guys", and I believe the only way they'll watch it is simply CHOOSING to watch it for themselves, because it's not popular enough to win a Patreon poll and the odds of winning one of the monthly Pick A Flick spins is 1 in 400-something. Cassie enjoyed "Lethal Weapon" and she enjoyed "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and the same writer-director made "The Nice Guys." PLEASE WATCH IT! thx

Rod Reavern

Do ya, Chris? Do ya really wonder? 😅

Clarence Newman

Did you see Working Girl yet? Curious if you enjoyed it.

Chris Thom

Im fine with the patreon, im a little kernel lol CANT WAIT!!!!

Andrew Heller

It will come to Patreon today but it was flagged on YT and we've appealed. As soon as the copyright stuff is resolved it'll be up on YT!

Cassie

Oh that's interesting. Yeah that's the one Kubrick movie I always had a hard time imagining him directing. A Roman epic just didn't quite seem like his thing. Off topic but I wonder how much Cassie would hate A Clockwork Orange.

Chris Thom

T2 was revolutionary for the time. Before Jurassic Park took it that extra mile. Big time movie and nostalgia around it. Plus it's James Cameron. He always finds ways to put asses in the seats.

Chris Thom

When is faceoff yt cut coming?

Andrew Heller

Her reaction of Gladiator (3 years ago) has 598K views. Respectable. Her reaction to Roman Holiday (1 year ago) has 82K views.

Clay F

T2 is incredibly popular. Arnold's biggest film. Gladiator not so much.

Clay F

I'm in.

Clarence Newman

Gladiator has garnered soo many YT views on the PIB channel. 273K views in 12 days. Why did T2 get 1.4M views? Did skynet send their entire army of cyborgs back in time just to watch Cassie's reaction?

V M

The theatrical cut really undermines the film. The studio pushed for a shorter runtime, mainly to allow for more daily screenings. Crucial scenes were omitted, character motivations became unclear, and if I recall correctly, even the main plot didn’t fully make sense. The director’s cut restores ~45 minutes, and I think it may be the most substantial director's cut improvement of all time. While it still doesn’t quite reach the level of Gladiator, it turns the film into a genuinely solid and good one IMO.

Gábor Árki

The movie did nothing for me, but the ladies' reaction is always fun, so....yes, I was entertained, but there's no need to shout! ;)

bgb1975 (Brian)

Clarence, does make it better. Can understand what’s happening better.

Clay F

Gabor. Clay. I remember going into Kingdom with great anticipation after Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean (because it had Orlando Bloom in it). I was underwhelmed to say the least, so I defer to you on the Director's Cut. It could only make it better.

Clarence Newman

For my tastes, my personal ratings: Gladiator (2000) = 9/10 Gladiator II (2024) = 7.5/10

Clay F

Gladiator (2000) might be one of the most historically inaccurate movies ever, and I still liked it. From falsely portrayed historical figures to inaccurate social patterns, historical errors in Gladiator (2000) abound. A few examples: --Maximus never existed and isn't really based on any single historical figure, but instead a composite of historical figures or cinematic depictions. Perhaps, most resembles Spartacus. --Commodus didn't kill his dad. --Lucilla didn't get happy ending. Instead, banished and later executed. --Marcus Aurelius had no intention of returning Rome to a republic. --Marcus Aurelius (while not a fan of the games) didn't ban gladiator games in Rome. --Commodus wasn't slain in the arena. --Highly unlikely that catapults and giant dart launchers would be used in the forest battle. Instead, used in sieges, but unwieldy in open battles, especially when there are so many trees.

Clay F

I liked it. I am glad this sequel was done. I wish I would have watched it in the theater. For my tastes, my personal ratings: Gladiator (2000) = 9/10 Gladiator II (2024) = 7.5/10

Clay F

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is a rare instance I recommend the Director's Cut over the theatrical version for a first watch.

Clay F

I liked Gladiator 2

Clay F

"The riding of a rhinoceros" I eagerly await Gladiator 3, which will feature a gladiator riding a triceratops! Spoiler: in the climax, the hero takes over the triceratops which, in one mighty leap, bounds into the stands and gores the Empress of Rome to death!!1! I will be entertained!

Happy Hanukkah

"Personally, I wasn't entertained." ISWYDT. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Whoops! Sorry! Cassie, Cleo it’s all awesome! Watch it! 🛕🤪😂

Mark White

Mark, I think you just killed any chance Cleopatra will get watched. "The FIRST TWO HOURS are a bit slow, setting it all up. But, THE SECOND TWO HOURS are really good." 😂

Clarence Newman

Spartacus is a must watch for Cassie at some point. It’s a great epic, similar feel to Ben-Hur but slightly better. The RT scores would back that up as well. I feel Cleopatra is worth a watch as well. The first two hours are a bit slow, setting it all up. But, the second two hours are really good. Great acting. It’s not as good as Ben-Hur and definitely not as good as Spartacus. The main reason for me to watch Cleo is the set designs, just out of this world! Incredible really.

Mark White

Thanks for the clarification, Gabor. My image of that kind of colisuem is big entrance archways with wrought-iron gates like prison bars, as opposed to a watertight structure. But if it happened, it happened. I'll strike that one issue off and stick with the 27 others. 😄

Clarence Newman

Kubrick came on as a hired gun after Kirk Douglas fired Anthony Mann as director. It does not have a real Kubrickian style to it. Mann has stated that most of the shots were actually his. I am not sure if Director's guild rules changed in the 1970s. When Richard Lester took over for Richard Donner on Superman II I think something like 70% of the scenes had to be reshot by Lester for him to get director's credit.

TheSingulatarian

Originally, the Colosseum was designed to be flooded with water from the aquaducts for reenacting naval battles. It was indeed used for that purpose. However, about a century before Marcus Aurelius, the Colosseum was rebuilt, incorporating an intricate system of tunnels, trap doors, and elevators to make the games more interesting. This, of course, meant flooding it was no longer possible. Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded seeing a naval battle even in the wrong time period, if not for two major issues: 1. Sharks This part completely broke my suspension of disbelief. Transporting sharks such a great distance while keeping them alive would have been impossible, given their need to swim in oxygenated saltwater for breathing. 2. Continuity The first movie clearly established the Colosseum’s trap doors and elevators. Depicting the arena being flooded now contradicts what has been already established before.

Gábor Árki

I'm not film-savvy enough to know what that means, Chris. All I can say is that it's a good story, well-acted and beautifully filmed. It's also got a good performance from Tony Curtis, which neatly brings us back to The Great Race, which Cassie will also love.

Clarence Newman

Haven't seen it yet. Is it obvious that it's a Kubrick film? Curious how his style extends to that genre.

Chris Thom

There's so much to complain about with this movie, and I already have in past comments sections, so I'll just focus on this one crazy aspect: with the power void created by the death of Commodus in the first movie, are we really expected to believe that two totally naive idiots somehow successfully managed a coup over Rome? They appear totally incompetent, and the kinds of leaders that typically only end up on the throne due to nepotism when their parent who's on the throne dies (see: Commodus). But Maximus gave power to the Senate before he died, and yet somehow two guys who look to be maybe 25-30 conquered the power structure of Rome some 15 years earlier when they were probably teenagers or younger? I'm calling BS on that, sorry. This was such a stupid, stupid script. Yikes.

Stranger2Reality

Yes, a perfect ending. "He was a soldier of Rome. He has saved us all. Life will be better from now on. Now quick, Lucius. Bugger off to some strange place forever because you might get lynched in the celebrations! What? Am I coming with you? Hell no. I want to party!"

Clarence Newman

We watched Spartacus in Kirk's honour the weekend he died, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. For a film from 1960, it holds up really well. As a guideline for Cassie, if you liked Ben-Hur, this one is possibly a tad better.

Clarence Newman

Putting in another request for "Spartacus" 1960 a much better gladiator movie.

TheSingulatarian

Sorry guys, I need to rant, and my wife has made it clear I can't do it to her. So you lot have drawn the short straw. As many people have said, there's a lot wrong with this film, and the biggest problem is that it's always going to be compared to the original. Gladiator 2000 was a great story with rich, believable characters and a deep human story. This seems to be about gimmicks and retreads and fancy Hollywood tricks. I mean, come on. Filling an ancient gladiatorial arena with water so you could put CGI sharks in it? Since when was a place like that built to be watertight? The rhinos and baboons are just as bad. 25 years ago, they had tigers, but at least they were real tigers and sparingly used. This lot just screamed computer game. I also couldn't get beyond the inadequacy of the lead role. Russell Crowe was collossal as Maximus - a granite-hard leader of men we truly believed in. With the greatest of respect to Paul Mescal (he may be a good actor in other things), but he was such a poor imitation, it truly paled the entire film. Aside from power of personality, Maximus/Crowe could clearly fight. Hanno/Mescal looks like he's struggling in every battle. The Emperors are laughable (who on earth would put those two in charge? Did they threaten to thcweam and thcweam and thcweam until they were thick?) and it's never explained as to why, at the end of Gladiator 1, Lucilla felt the need to send Lucius away. Commodus was dead, Rome was free, everyone was happy, yet Lucilla races out as if her son is going to be sacrificed in the celebrations? Why? Godfather 3 suffered because they waited 17 years to make it after Godfather 2. Wait that long and the thread of a franchise is lost. But at least that's a decent movie with a towering performance by Pacino. This is just a mess, and serves no purpose beyond grabbing some cash. The only thing it has in common with the original is the name. Having said that, even Gladiator 2 is elevated by watching it with these two lovely ladies, so I will end my rant with that.

Clarence Newman

Don't know a ton about computer animation, but I would imagine it's easier to recreate things with harder skin like rhinos.

Chris Thom

These criticisms are so bizarre as if there have been no fictional takes of history for entertainment, whether it be Young Guns having fun with the legend of Billy The Kid or Tombstone with Wyatt Earp and the Doc... and those are individuals who we actually know quite a deal about and whose lives differ from what was depicted in film. There are countless other examples when you look into historical western and especially eastern dramas. The original Gladiator was far from historically accurate but fun, and the sequel though lacking the irreplaceable Russell Crowe, is entertaining. I never saw the Gladiator films as trying to be historically accurate, but a fictional tale set in a dramatized and anachronistic Rome, to create its own legendary characters purely for some mindless entertainment like Amadeus, or Saving Private Ryan or Last of the Mohicans, or The Lion in Winter or Das Boot or Lawrence of Arabia or Shogun... That said, since first learning the Colosseum could be filled with water for naval battles I've always wanted to see a depiction of it and Gladiator 2 delivered. Also HBO's Rome, if we are talking about historical accuracy, is just as problematic if not more so, but I'll cede it is HIGHLY entertaining. Long live The Thirteenth!

Kareem Harper

I enjoyed it as a fun popcorn film and Denzel shreds scenes whenever he shows up. Denzel is so fun to watch when he plays a villain. Also, the monkeys in the beginning are supposed to be shaved baboons. Really odd how they nailed the FX for the Rhino and not the baboons, but most likely it was a different fx shop that handled the baboon scenes.

Kareem Harper

I actually didn't think you would enjoy it this much. Personally, I wasn't entertained. The movie felt lacking in substance, and aside from Acacius, none of the characters really engaged me and their motivations felt muddled. On top of that, it kept going out of its way to remind me of the first film and why it was so much better. There were also plenty of moments that pulled me out, like the sharks in the Colosseum. I kept checking my watch, wondering how much time was left because it felt like it dragged on for three and a half hours. I have to say, it could have been much worse. The original sequel ideas, possibly even a fully written script, would have had Maximus and Commodus continuing their battle in the afterlife to entertain the gods, being sent back to fight in all the wars throughout history, or something along those lines. If you would like to watch a better Ridley Scott movie, I highly recommend THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. But strictly the longer Director's Cut. The theatrical version butchered that movie.

Gábor Árki

Is that show considered more accurate?

Chris Thom

First one ended too perfectly. Hard to want to mess with it.

Chris Thom

Kind of wish they changed the title and didn't make it a direct sequel. It's a fairly compelling film and spectacle on it's own. Visually enticing film with some interesting semi-true history. Hard to compare it to the first though.

Chris Thom

And again I recomend the short TV show " Rome " just 2 seasons 22 episodes total.

Arturo

If anyone wants to know why so meany HATE this movie watch this short videos https://youtu.be/GJ3h0cjl1Wo https://youtu.be/JriAlqkMl3Q This director is famous for butchering history and with Gladiator II they did a excelent job at distorting historical events, peoples and twisting the perception of life in ancient Rome Numidia was conquer and part of the Roman empire 250 years befour Trebuche wher invented 1000 years after The riding of a rhinoceroses Mutant baboons and sharks ...

Arturo

And to add insult to injury they wasted a treasured Carly episode on such a crap movie.

JT

Yeah, this was a waste of their time. So many better movies they could have reacted to.

JT

That was so fun to watch you guys watch this movie!

Eddie M Lorenzo

Exactly, I cringed when this was chosen when there are still so many great films that miss the cut in favor of total trash like this.

Benjamin Gerrald

It's insane how good the original one was and how incredibly disappointing Gladiator II is .
