25 in '25 Poll B
Added 2025-02-05 20:48:27 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Today, we’re doing something fun and celebrating movies that turn 25 this year! Holy crap the year 2000 was a quarter of a century ago?? Not ok.
A lot of these movies have been on my short list and what a great year for the movies, everything from blockbusters to cult classics!
There will be two polls!
The top two winners from each poll will face off in a final showdown!
Who will wear the 2000 CROWN?
Comments
Good films, mostly. I prefer my list (obviously).

2025-02-10 16:47:09 +0000 UTCThey tried to make Cassie watch Sandra Bullock go to rehab, we said: "No, no, no." Hmm. I think I have the seed of something here, but it needs work. Maybe tighten it up a little.

2025-02-09 02:19:32 +0000 UTCI would like to say that my old high school classmate Jon Johnson won an Oscar for U-571. He worked on the soundtrack of the movie as the Supervising Sound Engineer. I got to hold his Oscar at our 30th HS Reunion. It's heavier than it looks and just as nice. Sheridan Wyoming, Class of 1973, GO BRONCS!!!!

2025-02-08 23:48:17 +0000 UTCExactly critics are just people like everyone else at the end of the day it's there personal opinion doesn't mean there right or there wrong personally it was an enjoyable movie I don't mind jet li but unleashed 2005 was probably by far his best performance imho.

2025-02-08 23:13:03 +0000 UTCClay, If you like courtroom dramas, Tommy Lee Jone and Sam Jackson I’d highly recommend it. Also I definitely wouldn’t judge a film on reviews or especially what wins or losses on these polls. Left me just remind you Cassie had to watch Howard the Duck because of a PIB poll 😂😂.
Dean Holt
2025-02-08 21:57:24 +0000 UTCTied for next-to-last place. Doesn't get the greatest reviews -- I guess that's why I never watched it. However, I would watch it if she reacted to it.

2025-02-08 21:38:11 +0000 UTCNot surprised Frequently won this, but U-572?????. It’s an ok movie than not even close to the true story it’s based on. Very surprised Rules of Engagement didn’t do better to be honest as it’s so much better but than just my opinion lol.

2025-02-08 07:35:53 +0000 UTCThe two I voted for came in 4th and 5th place -- not too bad. Not surprised that the popular Frequency won. I did not realize that U-571 was that popular. 1. Frequency - 407 2. U-571 - 303 3. Men of Honor - 213 4. FINDING FORRESTER - 178 5. TRAFFIC - 175 6. Titan A.E. - 150 7. 28 Days - 133 8. Romeo Must Die - 124 9. Rules of Engagement - 96 9. The Gift - 96 tie 11. Proof of Life - 77

2025-02-06 23:50:36 +0000 UTCI have kind of reached a point in these polls now where I no longer really want one particular film to win since one vote hardly makes much of a difference in the big scheme of things, so instead I look at whatever two are ahead and pick the one that I prefer more. In this case, I'm fine with FREQUENCY winning.

2025-02-06 05:49:02 +0000 UTCWell... polls aren't the best way to pick movies anyway. Too many conflicting objectives. Some want good movies, some want movies they know the reactors will enjoy, and some just want to see reactors squirm.

2025-02-06 05:44:09 +0000 UTCThe backlash was so bad they eventually capitulated and added a crawl at the end giving credit to those that actually deserved it.
Doug Fisher
2025-02-06 05:43:26 +0000 UTCYes, I understand. The film doesn’t give credit where credit is due. It would be akin to the Chinese storming the beaches of Normandy in Saving Private Ryan. But in all honesty, i think I could still could look past that and suspend my disbelief, as long as the acting was good and the action was entertaining. I know, I’m weird.

2025-02-06 04:41:24 +0000 UTCIt’s funny that the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” has such a reputation for being gory when you hardly see any blood. But the remake sure made up for the gore that the original lacked. Still, it was very well done and I enjoyed it immensely.

2025-02-06 04:33:16 +0000 UTCI don’t think Traffic is a badly made film though it’s been nearly 25 years since I saw it but I remember thinking it was very preachy and contrived. One of the storylines in particular is my go-to example of ludicrous plotting. That said, Romeo Must Die is an unironic favourite because it is deliberately ludicrous and over the top.

2025-02-06 02:48:23 +0000 UTCThat Texas Chainsaw might be the best horror remake ever. Jessica Biel nailed it as final girl. Also the cinematography was so slick for a schlocky scary movie. Loved that one. Not that it wasn't also seriously gross.

2025-02-06 01:30:27 +0000 UTCThe problem is that the movie treats the events in the film as if they actually happened. And this was a crucial accomplishment in the war. But, instead of giving credit where credit was due, the Hollywood machine chose to turn history on its head. It’s a clear cut case of stolen valor. Real life heroes risked their lives in this endeavor. But instead of giving them even the courtesy of a simple screen scroll at the end explaining what actually happened, the filmmakers chose to pretend it was true. The screenwriter apologized later, agreed it was stolen valor, said that if he was given the chance to do it over he wouldn’t have written the screenplay and said the studio decided to mask the truth for the increased box office. He further said that he had relatives that fought in the war and he would be upset if filmmakers treated their true heroics the way this film did. Finally, the British government complained and the President publicly apologized for the lies depicted in the film. If they want to make something up out of whole cloth, that’s one thing. What they did here was different. Imagine if “Only the Brave” depicted a bunch of visiting English firefighters making the sacrifices that the real life firefighters did. People would be upset, and rightly so.
Just Plain Bob
2025-02-06 01:18:41 +0000 UTCOr a poll for Feb. it’s not my fault most of the best ‘00 movies that Cassie hasn’t watched yet are horror movies.
Richard Maurer
2025-02-06 01:14:20 +0000 UTCI thought “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” was moderately entertaining (although the CGI was atrocious). Then I read the graphic novels written by comic book legend Alan Moore and understood why fans of the comic were so upset. It was brilliant. I’m still hoping that one day someone makes a faithful adaptation instead of a corporate shadow of the original IP.
Just Plain Bob
2025-02-06 01:02:47 +0000 UTCIt actually goes even further than just crediting Americans for what the English accomplished. Without saying what happens, the Poles used reverse engineering to accomplish the same feat several years before the war even started. Then, the key event depicted in the film was accomplished a total of 15 times. Thirteen of those 15 times it was the English that did it. Also, the English first accomplished this feat more than three years before the Americans. And, even after the objective was obtained, much work had to be done to make the accomplishment pay dividends. The English at Bletchley Park were widely regarded as the best at this and it proved to be a huge intelligence coup. And almost all of it was done by the English and the Poles (who continued their own efforts in secret after Germany invaded). I recommend “Alan Turing Decoded” and “The Codebreakers at Bletchley Park” as two superb books on this particular niche of World War 2 history. Point being, the American contribution in this area was negligible. The English led the way and the Poles were also instrumental. Obviously, America did a lot to help win the war, just not in this particular arena.
Just Plain Bob
2025-02-06 00:44:14 +0000 UTC“The Imitation Game” was a good movie and inspired me to read up on Alan Turing. Unfortunately, what I found was that it wasn’t particularly accurate, either. Dermot Turing, who is Alan Turing’s nephew, wrote a great biography of his uncle, “Alan Turing Decoded” as well as a fantastic history of the code breakers he worked with, aptly titled “The Codebreakers of Bletchley Park.” I highly recommend both. Turing was a brilliant man and instrumental in building the first computers (called Turing machines at the time) but most agreed that there were many codebreakers at Bletchley that were better at cracking code than he was. He was a visionary (he developed the concept of artificial intelligence in the late 40s/early 50s and was ridiculed for it) and a good administrator and hasn’t gotten his just due, but the movie exaggerated his direct contributions to codebreaking. It also invented events that never happened and ignored the true scope of Bletchley Park, which housed thousands of codebreakers, not the handful depicted in the film. It’s too bad because I believe the true story is much more interesting. To this day, the test for whether something should be considered true artificial intelligence is called the “Turing Test.”

2025-02-06 00:21:36 +0000 UTCSo fun discovering new (old) movies that become new favorites. 2025-02-06 00:15:32 +0000 UTCI don't know. I think it's a good mix. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I naturally gravitate to the movies released in that era. I'm slowly branching out to the classics.

2025-02-05 23:42:40 +0000 UTCThe problem I have with U-571 is the lack of historical accuracy. It’s U.S. flag waving nonsense at its worst. The Polish had already broken the Enigma code a whole three years before the U.S. was in WWII, and when the Germans added additional rotors the code breakers at Bletchley Park in England were reading decoded messages in real time - I recommend “The Imitation Game” for more on that subject.

2025-02-05 23:31:55 +0000 UTCRe: Ju-On, I remember when J horror exploded onto the scene in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was very gratifying to see SCARY ghost stories again. As usual, Hollywood ghost stories had all fallen into an easily understood template. Protagonist perceives the presence of the supernatural, no one believes the protagonist even as the empty, boring jump scares escalate, the protagonist discovers the haunting entity only wants to be heard/understood and to have justice served, the protagonist uncovers the actions of the killer that led to the haunting in the first place. Rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. Soooooooo boring. But Asian ghosts - they were scary and meant great harm to the living. Those movies could chill the blood and didn’t rely on the cheap, dime-a-dozen jump scares that modern audiences mistake for a narrative.

Once you’ve seen it, though, it’s impossible to view a certain Hollywood blockbuster as anything other than a pale imitation. I won’t give it away, in case you watch “Battle Royale”, so no spoilers. But you’ll know which Hollywood hit/rip-off I’m talking about once you’ve seen it.

Even the script writer admitted that U-571 had distorted history, and said that he would not do it again, stating he had relatives who served in WWII and he "would be personally offended if somebody distorted their achievements"

2025-02-05 22:53:56 +0000 UTCThis channel has been giving me crazy deja vu since I discovered it. The random memories that pop up related to the movies are crazy. Get some new ones every week which is fun...sometimes stressful.

2025-02-05 22:51:53 +0000 UTCJPBob - I’d probably pick Ju-On, even knowing that it might be the new film at the top of Cassie’s scariest film list. Despite what some people think I’m not looking to terrify her, I just think it’s probably the best film on the list. But like you, ask me again tomorrow and I might give you a different answer.
Richard Maurer
2025-02-05 22:50:37 +0000 UTCYeah that one is a cool mix. Romance, but also the drama of getting clean at rehab, which made it really unique for the time.

2025-02-05 22:50:06 +0000 UTCFrequency is the only viable choice , great concept. Caviezel has dipped into sci in the past with Deja Vu ( with Denzil!) and Outlander. Superb in the Tv Series Persons of Interest. But truly outstanding in The Passion of the Christ, which I hope you'll watch in the run up to Easter.

2025-02-05 22:48:21 +0000 UTCEyy I actually saw all those on your list except Battle Royale. Shadow of the Vampire was interesting. Hollow Man was a big hit if I remember right. Cutting edge special effects for the time. Pitch Black was kind of a cult classic.
Chris Thom
2025-02-05 22:46:57 +0000 UTCOn YouTube at least, I know people have wanted Frequency to win for a long time now. Personally the most memorable from that time are Frequency, The Gift, Traffic, and 28 Days. But would happy for any on the list to win! Do think Cassie might enjoy 28 Days for the Sandra Bullock and romance of it all.
Chris Thom
2025-02-05 22:43:32 +0000 UTC@ Robert - I do lean towards horror BUT there were a lot of non horror films I would have picked except Cassie has already done them. Maybe it’s just me but it seems all the really good mainstream movies from 2000 have been done already.

2025-02-05 22:33:43 +0000 UTCA lot of these are pretty good, but not necessarily great. The years haven't been kind to some of these, either. That doesn't mean they aren't a good watch, though. And honestly, I think Cassie would enjoy Proof of Life most, so of course it's in last place, lol.

2025-02-05 22:26:52 +0000 UTCRichard, the movies you listed would make for a terrible poll. Because every single one of them deserves a reaction. It would drive me crazy trying to pick just one. I’d probably go with “Battle Royale” but, if you asked me tomorrow I’d probably pick one of the others. Nix that, I’d go with “Ginger Snaps.” Nope, “Shadow of the Vampire.” Although that would really require a reaction to the original “Nosferatu” first. What the hell, I’m willing to make that sacrifice.

2025-02-05 22:14:57 +0000 UTCFrequency and Finding Forrester all the way on this one. None of the others really matter (though Traffic was pretty good... and intense). U-571 was trying too hard to be like other sub movies that came out before it, and it really butchered history.

2025-02-05 22:00:10 +0000 UTCSometimes I see polls like this and I can’t help but wonder where are the movies I actually care about? I’m not saying these are (all) bad movies, just that I had to go through the choices (both polls) twice to find something I’d bother to vote for. That made me google movies that came out in 2000 to see what movies I liked (and Cassie had not seen) and I found I could easily make a full poll without using any film from either of these 2 polls. I think I just realized I’m here more for the entertaining comments ( both by the Patrons and Cassie) than I am for the movies that are watched. Anyway I voted for Romeo Must Die (for Jet Li) and Space Cowboys (for Space)
Richard Maurer
2025-02-05 21:56:59 +0000 UTCFinding Forrester probably won't win but come on! Great movie!!!

2025-02-05 21:53:44 +0000 UTCI haven't heard of Frequency, but I do like it when a lot of folks on here get excited over a film I haven't seen. There's nothing quite like discovering a great one and that's happened quite a few times on this channel (Ford v Ferrari anyone?) That's kinda why Cassie enjoys the PiB gig so much, I think. The excitement of discovery.
Clarence Newman
2025-02-05 21:53:34 +0000 UTCAll of these are great but Men of Honor is one of those I grew up on and haven’t seen in so long. Also knowing about Carl Brashear and the things he had to go through, I find it very hard to complain about the very minuscule things in my life.
Blake Evans
2025-02-05 21:52:59 +0000 UTCI watched “The Imitation Game” and loved it. It inspired me to read a couple of books on the codebreakers at Bletchley Park. Unfortunately, what I discovered was that it wasn’t much more accurate than “U-571.” For one thing, Turing wasn’t considered a particularly gifted code breaker. He was much more of a visionary. His contributions were enormous, just very different than depicted in the film. Also, the movie makes it seem as though there were a small handful of people responsible for the code breaking. In reality, there were literally thousands. To me, his real accomplishments were more impressive than depicted in the movie. Not many can be both a visionary and a successful administrator. Remarkable man and a hero whose contributions both during the war and after the war have been sadly overlooked.
Just Plain Bob
2025-02-05 21:52:45 +0000 UTCCassie, for your consideration. Just watch the winners of each poll. Then put the 2nd place films in a run-off poll to get a 3rd film. You have 3 films now, just make it a week.

2025-02-05 21:48:31 +0000 UTCRomeo Must Die is a nice martial art action film featuring a well known H.K. actor Jet Li and of course Aaliyah (RIP). But I think it's one of Jet Li's less known western-released films. Would be a good choice if there is a martial art / action fighting poll. But please include Shalin (2011) for that poll!

2025-02-05 21:40:59 +0000 UTCMark -- I googled "is U-571 disrespectful to British?" The Google AI response is: "Yes, 'U-571' is widely considered disrespectful to the British, particularly to the Royal Navy ... the film historically inaccurate and undermining [the British] crucial role ...; even former British Prime Minister Tony Blair publicly criticized the film as an 'affront' to British sailors." I also saw this as the first result in the search: "U-571 upset the British Parliament. Prime Minister Tony Blair even commented that the production was an insult to the Royal Navy. The overarching sentiment wasn't one of mere nationalistic pride, but of upholding the truth and honoring the fallen."

2025-02-05 21:20:51 +0000 UTCYep. The English were furious about the film and rightfully so. Appalling that Hollywood should so cavalierly disregard true history and simply write their own, completely ignoring the true heroes. I read somewhere that 15 Enigma machines were captured during the war, all but two of them by the English. But, even before the war, the Poles had successfully reverse engineered the machines. The real problem was discovering which key to use, since it changed every day. That’s what the thousands of men and women at Bletchley Park did so well.

2025-02-05 21:20:39 +0000 UTCI voted for Space Cowboys as well. It’s definitely a movie Cassie and Carly would both enjoy. And I’d be happy with either Frequency or U-571. Two totally different movies, both with excellent casts, and both equally as enjoyable.

2025-02-05 21:15:11 +0000 UTCYeah, I've been experiencing Deja Vu as of late. I'm one of them old f**ts that saw '70s and '80s movies in theater on opening weekend. In the 2000s, I would say 'Star Wars. BTTF. 3 Amigos. They just came out!' Then I'd do the math and reach for my imaginary walker. Lately, I'm saying 'The Rookie. Sahara. The Bucket List. Those just came out!' then start wondering what nursing home I wandered away from.

2025-02-05 21:06:12 +0000 UTCAmen. I watched that film when it first came out and, like most, thought it was a true story. It wasn’t. And it robs the real heroes of their achievements. The screenwriter even apologized for it years later, saying that he wouldn’t have written it given a second chance. For the true story regarding code breaking and the Enigma machine, I highly recommend “The Codebreakers of Bletchley Park”, written by Dermot Turing, the nephew of legendary codebreaker Alan Turing, who helped build the first computers (aptly called called Turing machines) during the war and first posited the theory of artificial intelligence (for which he was ridiculed).
