Face/Off (1997) - Full Reaction

What. a. wild. ride! This was totally insane but had this real emotional anchor and I was totally into it. I came upstairs trying to explain the plot to Ben and couldn’t even believe how crazy it sounded haha. Just classic 90’s action and everything you could want from Nick Cage and Jon Travolta!

Face/Off (1997) - Full Reaction

Comments

I'm surprised the PIB community chose this as your intro to John Woo (granted, you have seen M:I2). I highly recommend eventually checking out John Woo's The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992). In terms of action, they are groundbreaking films that Hollywood continues to try to replicate today. As you watch them you'll notice things that films like The Matrix and John Wick pay homage to. John Woo's transition from Hong Kong Cinema to Hollywood wasn't as great as some of us fans hoped it would be, but it did give us gems like FACE/OFF, Van Damme's Hard Target and the underrated Broken Arrow with Travolta and Christian Slater.

Kareem Harper

John Woo at his best, 'Hard Boiled' is this wild too. Another great movie with Travolta, in a true story, is 'A Civil Action', a courtroom drama.

JPDotCom23

I saw this rather young and all I could remember is that it is batshit insanity, great reaction to rewatch this to. Your right about the police it's like they went to the stormtrooper school for shooting, Probably would have saved more lives if they let the bomb go off with the amount of killing after the face swap haha. Also his poor wife.

Gray

I knew you would love it! Such a great movie!! 🍿

Carol Rocha

I've thought about this as a feature on streaming services. A small fee to watch the movie with the choice of a variety of reactors as an option

Milton William Burray

And unlike today, in the 90s you got sent home from school if you DIDN'T have long hair

Milton William Burray

The Rock's on the channel

Milton William Burray

So many thoughts on this one Cassie.. without even knowing it, youve already watched 2 of the 3 Nic Cage 90s action trifecta.. Face/Off and Con Air are under your belt.. now you have to watch The Rock which also came out in the 90s. John Travolta will always be Danny Zukko to me.. but Im glad he reinvented himself in the 90s playing mostly bad guys thanks to Tarantino casting him as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction.. he also had some other decent movies in the 90s like Phenomenon and Michael.. both are good in their own rights and worth watching. The best line in this reaction by you by far was, God bless the 90s. And should we be worried that you are hoping for someone to get killed in these movies? Thanks for bringing me some nostalgia with this one.. Im glad you enjoyed it my friend.

Johnny Bullis

Wow. When I saw that Cassie was watching this, I thought, "Yeah, Face/Off! I liked that movie!" It had been decades since I'd seen it. I even bought the DVD (I love me some deleted scenes and commentaries). Yes, it has some crazy scenes. Just suspend your disbelief and buckle up!

Stephen Dias

Yeah, was a great reaction.

Clay F

Hey, my 90s Camaro blew up in 96!

Jon

a lot of people don't remember this, but everything blew up in the 90's. I must have gone through a dozen cars between 1992-1997.

Walter

This movie needs a new home video release so Cassie's reaction can be included as a special feature.

Ryan Geiger

"Is this real life?" Nope. It's a John Woo film. Logic and physics be damned. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a lot of fun. Very stylish, very exciting and very stupid. Cage and Travolta are great and clearly had a ball playing each other.

Stick Figure Studios

I feel like this is the movie Tom Cruise saw and was like that’s who I want to direct the second Mission Impossible

Jason Dolan

“Now we’re in a boat chase. God bless the 90s.”

Jason Dolan

That was fun. Cassie's reaction was exactly as expected. I'm so glad she got to see this movie. There's no other movie quite like this one. A wild ride indeed!

Luke Godfrey

And not only do they play each other but they even on occasion play each other PLAYING THEMSELVES!!!

Stick Figure Studios

i watched this in the theatre in high school and it became an instant favorite. i remember watiching this again in my friends dorm room in college and we would joke about what software they were using (this was during the era of windows xp, windown millenium edition)......

Augustine Lee

thats a good choice i also like "the negotiator" earlyish samuel L jackson

Augustine Lee

Plot twist: He didn't survive. Super plot twist: We're all dead and we dont even know it!

V M

+1 for Broken Arrow.

David Freese

Unfortunately alot of before cgi movies has that issue. Biggest one i remember was in T2

David Freese

As much as this is 90s cheese both of them committed to how the others played the characters.

David Freese

Yeah that would have been interesting to see. He could have brought in a bit more of a horror element bit like Darkman crossed from escape from NY. I have been thinking about it a bit more and maybe a remake could work. With maybe Sam Raimi and just let him go full on horror and give it a completely different tone.

Dean Holt

Broken Arrow is a cool movie, though I feel Cassie would enjoy it more if she watched Christian Slater & Samantha Mathis in Pump Up The Volume first

Milton William Burray

Most ridiculous to me is that it came out thirty years ago

Ian Tonge

Great an action movie from John woo. If you saw MI:2 you know both movies used doves the idea was so crazy that it was crazy. This movie’s was parodied in the movie Spy by Jason Stratham

Movie Maestro

Cassie, the fact you went into the opening credits knowing who John Woo is and his love for slow motion and flying doves made me seriously smile! You are a true cinephile now lol! I had a strong feeling you would like this one because you liked John Woo's take on Mission: Impossible 2 (most people would rank that pretty low on their M:I rankings). This is one of my favorite action movies and, yeah, it is VERY 90's. I love that Cage and Travolta got to play the same 2 characters...it must have been so fun for them! Nic Cage was on a heck of an action blockbuster streak with The Rock, Con Air and Face Off from '96-97. John Woo also directed Travolta in Broken Arrow the year prior to Face Off and that one is also an action movie worth seeing. John Travolta is super cool in that one. Loved this reaction!

inpham0us

Man oh man!!! This was a laugh I needed! I know I said I was gonna watch Gladiator II after I got off, but when I saw you posted this not long after, I had to watch this first! "Face/OFF" is one of my all time favorite action movies growing up as a kid, I was 9 years old when I saw it! I admit, the whole plot and concept wasn't something I understood much until I grew older into my teens, I was in it for the action: guns blazzing, explosions, the puns & one-liners, etc! I'm an action movie junkie and this was one of the best, as you said in the reaction, "God bless the 90's", I say Amen🙏lol! Travolta and Cage have really good chemistry when it comes to playing both protagonist and antagonist! I saw some BTS on how this movie was made, and they said that they both had to study each others personalities, mannerism's, and body language if you will! Basically, Travolta had to learn how to act like a crazy psychopath from Cage, while Cage had to learn how to be a mentally disturbed parent after losing his child! The actor playing Cage's brother, Polix Troy, you'd recognize him from "Jurassic Park III", he played Billy! As for the "practical effects" (the surgery scene) that was done by effects master Kevin Yagher! Half body scaled doubles of Travolta and Cage with mechanical chest cavity breathing and somewhat fully replicated facial structures so they could pull off the effect of swapping faces! Kevin Yagher has done many make-up, creature, and special effects in many movies, some movies that you've reacted to, but not limited including: "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure", "Glory", "Conspiracy Theory", "Mission Impossible II", and "Sleepy Hollow"! Other films he's worked on that you may have heard of: "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2/3/&4", "Child's Play", "Tales from the Crypt", "13 Going On 30", and many others! Pretty impressive if you ask me lol! As for Director John Woo, he's made a huge name for himself in Hong Kong with many action movies to his name, I've seen a few and they're awesome! One of my favorites of his is "Hard Boiled"! And he always has his trademark in his action films, slow motion doves flying around lol! One movie I highly recommend you eventually watch and react to that he did here in the U.S. and colaborated with Travolta, is an action movie called "Broken Arrow" that movie is fun too, maybe not as intense as this one, but still entertaining! Believe it or not Cass, I actually own an airsoft duel pair replica of those twin Gold M1911 pistols that Nic Cage uses at the beginning and then later in the penthouse! And you know that scene when he's doing the Tina Turner hair twirl in the LA Convention Center at the beginning, a few years ago I attended the Anime Expo that happens every summer at that exact place, and I reenacted that same move in the exact spot where he did it, some of the people walking by me thought I was nuts, but one person yelled out "Nic Cage... Face/OFF" and I was all like, "You got it buddy" lol🤣 This was a fun watch Cassie, I'm really glad you enjoyed it, I'll watch this reaction again and again if I wish lol! Hope you're doing well, love and support always, you & Carly are the best, God bless you and the family, and as always........ stay classy Cassie🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉✌👍🌹

Wesley White

yes yes yes YES!!!!!!!!

Wesley White

I thought I'd post a link to the trailer for some fun nostalgia for everyone to easily enjoy. https://youtu.be/S-nDX0BeFoQ

YodatheHobbit

Yeah, the pausing of the film at key moment in Corridor Crew's YouTube video is quite hilarious.

YodatheHobbit

The most remarkable thing about this movie is how good the acting is from John and Nicholas. They spend most of the movie playing each other and crush it.

Lucien

"We're gonna need some more FBI guys I guess"

Brian's Dog

Yeah true. I remember this being a big deal at the time. Partly because of John Woo.

Chris Thom

Nominating for next 90s Action Thriller… The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

Larry Darrell

May I nominate… The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

Larry Darrell

Travolta and Cage were perfect in these roles. Such great acting. After the face switch, I still feel like I’m seeing Cage’s insane Troy in Archer and Travolta’s distraught Archer in Troy. The cast’s performances made this film.

Larry Darrell

100 percent

Cassie

+1 for Broken Arrow (1996)… lots of Fun!! While we’re at it, throw in another Christian Slater action thriller… Hard Rain (1998)

Larry Darrell

+1 for Urban Cowboy (1980) With John Travolta and Debra Winger being watched in such close proximity, less than a month apart… it’s even more of a perfect time to see them pair up.

Larry Darrell

As crazy as the premise of this movie is, Travolta and Cage absolutely sell it. They actually feel like different people before and after the face swap.

Miguel Tapia

I 3rd voting for her to watch Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Good suggestion.

Matthew Folz

I believe he shot Con Air and Face/Off a month apart. That there is a career in itself.

Matthew Folz

First of all.... why are you wearing that ugly, ugly sweatshirt? (I'm a Packers fan, I can't resist the cheap joke.) In all seriousness, great reaction. Near the end of the reaction you summed up my reaction the first time I watched this: "Pure Insanity." Fun fact, this script was going around Hollywood FOREVER and went through many casting variations. First it was going to be Sly and Arnold, then Michael Douglas and PIB Hall of Famer Harrison Ford, then Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. As much as I love the two guys they eventually went with, I would have loved to seen all 3 of those alternate versions.

Matthew Folz

When Cassie sneezed… anyone else think, “be careful of your voice chip”? ;-) I grew up in the 90s, so 80s and 90s films were my first. I thought films like this were normal. Times were great! It was such a treat to go to the movie theater. Heck, every Saturday Night on HBO was a Premiere movie. God I miss those days. Anybody remember this… https://youtu.be/i1NKoMNy5bY?si=phcLHYs0B90gtM6n (Tell me I’m not the only one that gets teary eyed hearing that score ;-) A Badass Action Pact movie about a bad guy and a good guy surgically switching faces and swapping lives… that will have you in tears when it’s over. This is what happens when you cast Calibur Actors, give them a heartfelt story to act out, and remember to make it FUN!! God Bless the 90s :-) PS:: there was a film I saw some years back that is Quasi-similar to this one, that also had Calibur Actors in a wild action thriller. FUN and has heart, like Face/Off… worth a watch if you have the chance. Criminal (2016)… starring Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones.

Larry Darrell

Ok, tbh the face-petting thing is a little weird for me, but you do you.

Keith Jacobsen

Can you even continue on with the channel after experiencing the pinnacle heights of cinema? And the total crescendo of the acting arts?

Chris Thom

It feels like I rented it on VHS just a few years back, but as much as I love to lie to myself that I'm not getting old, 1997 is at this point a huge generational gap. It's not crazy to imagine there's probably loads of people in their 20s and almost 30s who haven't heard of it at all, much as that's a cinema crime in itself.

Archronos

He does seem legitimately sick in that movie. Cage calls it Kabuki Acting.

Chris Thom

It is pretty bad. Lol. I didn't know it before that moment though. But they were like 19 or 20 and obviously didn't know what they were doing with it. Have to forgive. Two seats over though.

Chris Thom

Wow she didn't even know about the face switch going in? That's some serious Spoiler Control. For 27 years no less.

Chris Thom

Feel like it would've killed as a 80's John Carpenter movie, too.

Chris Thom

that was confusing me too!

Cassie

All GREAT MOVIES!

Carol Rocha

😂😂😂

Carol Rocha

I don't know enough of the details (and don't really want to) to know is the Masterson thing was art imitating life, or life imitating art with this particular scene.

Mojo One Thousand

Oh gosh!! There’s nothing any worse than not being able to escape someone’s horrible perfume/cologne!

Carol Rocha

Bless you!!

Carol Rocha

🙋🏻‍♀️ I second that

Carol Rocha

I KNEW you were gonna love it!! Even if you think it’s crazy crazy, at first, it really does pull you in very early. I love this movie. Some people scoff at it, but I think it’s an amazing movie that truly entertains! And when Archer (John) brings the orphaned little boy home with him…..well it was tears for me—first time, every time. I try to never miss a chance to watch this. Were you not entertained?! 😄 Great reaction!! ❤️

Carol Rocha

I love this movie but it has maybe the worst stunt man concealing I have ever seen in a movie. The stuntmen look nothing like them the entire movie, its actually comical 😂

shaneth138

You would LOVE Nic Cage in Longlegs. One of the best romantic comedies of all time!

shaneth138

Ah man, no way I could wait for YouTube for this one. Waiting for the plot twist at the clinic and Cassie finding out why the film really had this title was one of the best moments I think I've ever enjoyed so far on this channel. Thank you so much for watching this Cassie, loved this react! Maybe some day you'll see the magic that happened when Travolta worked with Woo for the first time along with Christian Slater for Broken Arrow (1996). That's easily my favorite of Travolta's work and he's done some really tremendous films but Vic Deakins holds a special place in my heart.

Archronos

I also laughed at her bemused "How are they going to fix that body hair and stuff?" This is not a movie where you should overthink the science, Cassie!

Henry Graham

I first watched this movie almost 30 years ago, and remember really liking it. I don't think I've seen it since, so I count this as my second watch, and still like it. Great reaction. Cage is crazy good acting in this. Wild concept, but a premise I readily accept to enjoy the movie. The floppy disc aside, I think this movie has aged better than "The Rock" (1996) and "Con Air" (1997).

Clay F

What a great, ludicrous ride this movie is! Cage and Travolta are so much fun, and Woo turns it into something operatic. Cassie's growing exasperation at Cage's inability to hit Travolta with the countless bullets he fires in the last twenty minutes was really funny.

Henry Graham

This movie reaction is freakin classic formula for pib. Cassie watched and falls in love with a classic “boy movie” from the 80s 90s or early 00s. Please Cassie. Keep this type of reaction going. At least once per week. This is where the channel is at its friggin best !

Augustine Lee

Yeah, they really dropped the ball on those special effects faces while getting prepped to swap faces. Why not just have the actors on those gurneys?? Very weak work. I’m glad you pointed out the shabby work! Ha! Loved this reaction!!

Philip Alan

Yeah, they almost predicted the future with that scene. Yikes.

YodatheHobbit

Wild and crazy movie. It blew my mind when I first saw it. At first, I was like what?! They switched faces?! But then the movie drawls you in and you are along for the ride. It's a wild and crazy ride. But it is also great. Only the 90's. Great job hanging on for this wild and crazy ride. Great Reaction Cassie.

Rick Williams

This is possibly one of the most bat shit crazy movie ever made and could have only be made in the 90s 😂😂. But after watching it again I kind know why it’s not one a rewatch a lot, as the dialogue most of the time if terrible lol and it’s around 30 minutes to long. But I’m glad you enjoyed, one of my favourite Nic Cage films that I don’t think you’ve seen is Amos & Andrew with Samuel L Jackson it’s a really fun action comedy. Drive Angry is also a pretty underrated action movie.

Dean Holt

Other than Travolta in Look Who's Talking, this movie was pretty much my introduction to him and Nic Cage. I had known of Cage in other movies, but none of them really captured my attention enough to want to watch yet as a kid. I also thought they were much better at acting like insane Troy than either one acted as regular Sean Archer. So many quotable lines for a 13 year old boy to repeat to his friends and the way they're delivered stick in your mind. "Ooooooweeeeee you're GOOD LOOKIN!" "I wanna take his face.........................OFF!". This movie is so fun for me to laugh at in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kind of way, as well at despite it's goofiness and unhinged nature, still gets me into it and invested emotionally with the happy ending cheesiness, and sometimes I like good cheese. I'm a softy, even the most outlandish and poorly written movies can make me shed a tear sometimes, despite me knowing better. I used to almost slap myself for getting sad at the end of movies when I was 13 and watching stuff like this, haha. I'm realizing now that some of the overstylized aspects of this movie have a lot in common and were potential influences for some Resident Evil games. The over serious yet goofy and outlandish stunts style makes me imagine a version of this movie done with CGI instead of actors. If you remove the zombie element from the games, it's cutscenes almost feel one to one in terms of style. Reminds me particularly of Resident Evil 4 and 6. I gotta wonder about how Adam(Caster's son) will grow up and find out his adoptive father killed his biological father, maybe blame him, and deal with the burden of him having been a madman, and wonder if that same madness is in himself. Then maybe have a dream about his criminal, yet semi-angel mother, (It was nice how she put Eve's head down once she realized who was who, protecting the innocent), in heaven telling him some kind of cheesy line like "You are not your father, you are MY son." which will make it all better and he'll wake up a brand new, less complicated man. Did I just write a sequel?

YodatheHobbit

This is just such a special movie. Nicholas Cage plays such a special maniacal villain, yet he plays the good guy for the majority of the movie. Loved Cassie's reaction, and knew she would just melt at the ending. It was like the whole movie was made for her.

Mike LL

Second that suggestion.

Chris Thom

@Joe- "patience has nothing to do with it in my book. I want a change in the timing..." Yes, you want Cassie to change her entire watch and production schedule to suit you. Not to mention what you expect from the editor. Screw them and their lives. That is the problem. The loose schedule has been release on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, with Monday being a make-up day in case of unforeseen problems, for years. This week was Thursday, Sunday, and Monday morning- right on schedule.

Mike Lemon

Great Reaction! We need more movies like Face/Off on the channel. And less like Gladiator 2...., please!

Jeri1979

I had so much fun watching this in theatre in 1997, when i was 17 and i am still having fun watching it. Such a ride. Glad you enjoyed it Cassie.

Ib-René Jørgensen

I like Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995) (Drama, Romance) (watched many times) in which Cage won Best Actor Oscar (his only Oscar win). Elisabeth Shue is awesome. The movie nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Actress (Elisabeth Shue), Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Clay F

Ooh yeah that will make you HATE whatever you were watching at the time. Still can't fully enjoy V for Vendetta because someone's cologne in the theater made me completely nauseous and I had to go outside.

Chris Thom

Yep, we had Chesney at Aber doing the same!!😂

Mark White

I didn't go clubbing myself, but heard interesting stories from those who did: like Chesney Hawkes dancing on the tables!😆

Chris Clarke

The Killer almost was. With Richard Gere and Denzel Washington. Walter Hill as director. That's a true story.

Rick Rodriguez

Frost V Nixon: Dawn of Justice.

Rick Rodriguez

Geez dude. Might as well have been broken up with at the same time it seems. At least you survived.

Rick Rodriguez

It’s not for everyone!! But if people were partying out in wales in the late 90s early 2000s it brings back a few memories!! Well some! 🤪😂

Mark White

Lol. No worries. Doesn't work for most people. The particular flavor of High Drama and style that is Woo worked in MI2 in way that was messier for me in Face/Off. But I get it. It's a weird one especially when compared to all the others in the series.

Rick Rodriguez

Not familiar with that one, no.

Chris Clarke

Yeah, I spent a week up at Bangor Uni, good uni, great nights out! On more of a Cardiff/movie note Chris, have you seen, by any chance, the film “Human Traffic”?1999. Brit comedy/nights out in Cardiff got Danny Dyer in it.

Mark White

Chris, really good movie and I’m pretty confident Cassie would like that one.

Mark White

My first experience with this movie was a complete disaster. I loved John Woo’s Hong Kong actioners so I was at the front of the line in the theater when this came out. I had a bucket of popcorn and a Coke and I settled in for some fun. Then, about ten minutes in, the pain hit me. I had eaten some Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack fried chicken earlier in the day. It DID NOT agree with the popcorn. The pain was excruciating but I watched the whole thing. I spent that weekend bent over double on the couch or in bed. In retrospect, I should’ve gone to the emergency room, the pain was that bad. Instead, I just prayed for death. I survived (obviously), but it took me a decade before I could get past that memory and enjoy this movie for the ridiculous, goofy joy ride that it is. But his Hong Kong films are still better.

Just Plain Bob

Uh oh literally saved Pig on On Demand last night and was going to watch it later. Hoping it wasn't one of those turkeys.

Chris Thom

Not sure but didn't think his style quite worked with M:I. Not certain why. Usually have a lot of respect for a franchise to switch it up like that. Maybe need to see it again. But literally fell asleep the first two times I watched it.

Chris Thom

Hoping Nixon AND Frost Slash Nixon happen eventually here. Great performances all around.

Chris Thom

Omg that colon drives me insane but I don't know why.

Chris Thom

My older brother went to Bangor University, so we were hoping our little brother would go to Aberystwyth to cover mid-Wales as well! Unfortunately he went to Reading, lol.

Chris Clarke

Just finished! I forgot how much fun this movie was! (And ridiculous but FUN!) Nothing better than when Cassie is completely shocked by a movie! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!

Wrench_In_The_Works

First time I saw it in theaters in 1997 I felt the same as today. Throw some emotion into it and the make-believe aspect feels less jarring.

Omar

That’s so weird Chris!, I would of being doing exactly the same thing at roughly the same time!, but just up the road (sort of!) in Aberystwyth uni!! 🍺😃

Mark White

John woo I think does melodrama better than anyone and in a sincere way as well. You should definitely watch his films from Hong Kong.

Night King01

The Killer has the most drama out of the three. Especially with the element of a semi love interest. Another good one is Bullet in the Head which was essentially John Woos tribute to the dear hunter. That is some crazy melodrama but in the best way, nobody does melodrama like john woo.

Night King01

I think you would actually like John Woos Hong Kong films. If your enjoyment of this is anything to go by I think you would enjoy them. They are way more grounded though but they still have that emotional weight to them. The Killer is great as well as a better tomorrow and Hard Boiled. Great timing to since they are all getting proper releases in the states in their original forms. So now you can watch actual 4k transfers on blu ray. Also the last hurrah for chivalry if you want a more fantastical side of John Woo.

Night King01

You could tell Cassie wanted to rub Purell on her brain after every Castor scene.

Brent Petty

Mission Colon Impossible!😆

Chris Clarke

First saw this movie with friends at Uni (in Swansea, South Wales), the night before an exam! Was up past midnight, but was sufficiently invigorated by the film that I suffered no detrimental exam performance. This would have been the very early noughties. Your early comments make me think I should probably watch Frost Slash Nixon some time, Cassie!😉

Chris Clarke

Cage is unhinged in the best way in this movie 🙌

Wes

You don't have AC?

Joe

@Mike, patience has nothing to do with it in my book. I want a change in the timing of when patreon content delivery is made...that simple.

Joe

She seemed to actually enjoy it, I’m glad 👍🏽

Omar

Correct, those dinosaur bones and Elvis memorabilia don't pay for themselves.

Mojo One Thousand

I had the exact same reaction when I first saw this movie. I'm like, "This it too unbelievable!....Why do I like it?". The action was amazing and, like you said, they knew it was over the top and just rolled with it. Cage and Travolta really leaned into their characters. Just a crazy, popcorn, wild ride.

Michael West

Cassie, if you liked this, then you might enjoy another John woo movie, very similar “Broken Arrow” with Travolta and Christian Slater.

Mark White

He's a bit of a loon in real life...got into debt so has had to make many turkey movies for the paycheck.

Joe

Cage was good in the past...he spent too much of his money and had to make turkey movies to pay off his debts, never a good career move!

Joe

Unhinged is the word I used to describe this... but it is unhinged ridiculous fun. John Woo's slow-mo's, jumping akimbo pistols, and doves combined with the over-the-top Cage and Travolta performances make this quite the ride. Nic Cage had arguable one of the great runs for an actor, with "The Rock", "Con Air", and "Face/Off" in an 18 month to 22 year period and being blockbusters. I sid love this as a younger person, but over time this one is the weaker of the for me; doesn't stop it from being a whole lot of fun. Unfortunately, that Danny Masterson scene has aged horribly... forgot that was a thing in this. I wonder if Ben has seen this, or has to just go by Cassie's description at this point?

Mojo One Thousand

Ridiculous thirty years ago, ridiculous still.

TheSingulatarian

I always used that hand to the face thing that John Travolta did to his son and daughter with girl friends after that movie. It comes off really tender. It's like I'm always hear for you!!!!

Jimmy Reyes

Surprised they weren't remade by Hollywood. Or maybe they were, in pieces.

Chris Thom

I defend MI2. And it might be my second favorite of his American films. But not in the top 5 overall. How bout you?

Rick Rodriguez

Wow, I love the writeup! I'm glad Cassie was impressed with this one, I look forward to watching. John Woo the director usually is always good at including emotional anchor, that's a lovely way to put it. My favorite John Woo movie is Hard Boiled (1992). It's entirely in Chinese but the amount of action and gunplay in it defies belief! 😆 Even if I told you what happens, you wouldn't believe it, and after you've seen it you won't believe that you witnessed the unbelievable! And then you wouldn't be able to describe to someone else what happens... just like I can't convince someone what happens... hahaha and that's why I "could" actually say what happens because it would be just like water off a duck's back, it would just fall off as an impossibility to put water on a duck's back. lol (roast duck?) Two other John Woo movies sort-of related... A Better Tomorrow (1986), The Killer (1989)... they have the emotional anchor of honor, brotherhood and redemption... plus famous gunplay and style. Considered a trilogy because the same actor is in them, Chow Yun-fat. I generally recommend Hard Boiled because I'm not as familiar with the other two.

Mannygogou

Before coming to Hollywood, director John Woo made some of the best action films ever made, most of them starring Chow Yun-fat, including “A Better Tomorrow” (1 & 2), “The Killer” and “Hard Boiled.” All four of these films were made in Hong Kong and all four were brilliant (the hospital shootout in “Hard Boiled” was a particular highlight). I’d love to see reactions to any or all of them.

Just Plain Bob

An all time classic. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It's absolutely ridiculous as a concept, yet it works because of Cage and Travolta, and John Woo's direction.

Raymond Terry

I'm a Michigan baby, Lions are my team too!

Katie Jackson

Big fan of nic cage, He has a great back catalogue, recent movies not as prolific but an amazing body of work. Soem films that i doint think you've seen that stand out for me are Leaving Las Vegas, Snake Eyes and Pig

rakesh

Fingers crossed for slow motion dives, explosions, sparks, a random flying dove, and Nic Cage acting insane.

Chris Thom

Patience is a virtue (but whining works sometimes too).

Chris Thom

For romance month, maybe consider another John Travolta film, Urban Cowboy.

Shawn Kildal

The song "Over the Rainbow" was of course from The Wizard of Oz. This version in the movie was sung by John Travolta's close friend and Grease costar Olivia Newton-John.

Saw this at the theater. It was indeed a crazy ride. That scene when the evil Sean Archer first appeared at the prison and said "Ooh wee, you're good looking" had me rolling.

Where would you place Mission Impossible 2?

Chris Thom

Definitely... Hilarious film Nic Cage should have won something for his portrayal of 80's, 90;s and 2000 Nic Cage.. Only Nic Cage could pull off playing Nic Cage.. :) I love that movie so much..

Ryan Towell

I first saw this in the cinema but I knew what the deal was because of trailers. I think when you’re 15 you just assume that this is what movies are. It’s totally a freaky Friday situation. Sean learns to relax and have fun and Cas learns to take responsibility and get a real job. The director of The Notebook, Nick Cassavetes, plays Dietrich, the crazy drug dealer who may have had a thing for his sister. You’ve seen Joan Allen in the Bourne movies and Pleasantville btw.

Jacob King

One of the best action films ever made. Another good Nic Cage film is City of Angels with Meg Ryan.

In the words of Martin Scorsese: “This is Cinema”.

Gladiator II AND Face/Off in one night?! Now I have to decide which reaction to watch tonight, and which one to watch tomorrow. It’s a win/win either way so I guess I’ll let fate decide. Gotta go get me a coin.

Dan M

You're wearing my Detroit Lions!

David Crabtree

Just have to say, before I watch the reaction, that Cassie you have now seen the three Nick Cage movies: Con-Air, The Rock, and now Face/Off that are heavily referenced in THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT. You are now ready to watch this Nicholas Cage/Pedro Pascal wacky movie!!

Mike LL

Spoilers. They say tender

Rick Rodriguez

YES!!! I have been eagerly awaiting this reaction since you watched The Rock and Con Air on the channel; many consider those two films along with this one to be part of the unofficial Nic Cage action trilogy of the 90s! This was my favorite of the three, and also the only one I got to see in theaters. After you watched The Rock and Con Air in such close proximity, I thought for sure this one would be coming soon…but hey, patience is a virtue and I’m so glad to finally get this reaction!

JL_83

Going to watch this later today, but I’m a bit surprised Ben hasn’t seen it. Definitely need loose one if his man cards for that 😂😂

Dean Holt

And if anybody wants to watch it- https://www.patreon.com/posts/rock-1996-full-79267981

I just gave some customer feedback from a personal perspective that I would prefer to not know what's upcoming, and titles just uploaded when ready as a surprise, than an Upcoming weekly schedule, posted on Monday, back-loaded to 2/3 of releases uploaded the following Monday Some agreed, some didn't

I waited with baited breath for this one as a kid. I had become a fan of John Woo's after renting The Killer at my Video Express and LOVED it. Learned all about his filmography as I could from things called books and renting what was available. Though it's kinda gone down for me in terms of Woo's best, I still think its one of the most bonkers and fun action movies of the 90s. Total Recall being the king.

Rick Rodriguez

Look at this ridiculous chin!

Andrew Taylor

Well, look at that. All the full reactions for the week were released in the week. See what a little patience gets you.

Mike Lemon

It’s too hot to sleep in Australia right now so this couldn’t have dropped at a better time. Very excited. This is one of my favourites. So stupid/so good.

Jacob King

Still processing? I guess it was asking a bit much to have 2 videos released on the same day😄 oh. Working now. Cool

Brian McGovern

Always thought this was a stupid fun movie.
