Only the Brave (2017) - Full Reaction

If you don’t know the story or have not seen it, just watch it!

* spoilers below

Holy crap holy crap that broke our hearts. I thought the story was told in a way that honored them and showed what firefighters are up against. I thought the entire cast was perfect and I am better for knowing this story.

Only the Brave (2017) - Full Reaction

I used to be a volunteer with my local fire department. I was at the firehouse when this movie was in theaters. Myself and 3 other volunteers left the firehouse to go see this movie, There was another crew there to respond to emergencies, It was so sad watching it. It was also not long after we had a major forest fire in the eastern part of my state, 2 hours away. We sent a crew up that way. I was not part of that crew.

Colin Davis

That moment when you are hoping that the movie is Top Gun Maverick with fire fighters, and realize it's Lone Survivor. Crushed.

shaneth138

This is one of those movies where if you don't know the story (and if you're not from the US as I'm not, the chances of you knowing it going in are about zero) it hits you like a truck - they play it off as a wholesome movie about people trying to be essentially good firefighters and the guy turning his life around, then, yeah, that thing happens.

Martin Nicholls

Sicario (2015) has my favorite performance of Benito del Toro, and he’s had many good performances.

Clay F

+1 for Sicario (2015). Currently ranked #11 at popcornrequests with 84 requests. You can go upvote (if you haven’t) to increase the number of requests to 85. She has seen both Hell or Highwater and True Grit (2010).

Clay F

+1 for "Deepwater Horizon" (2016) Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson. *True Story* Directed by Peter Berg.

JAKH

You would like Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin in: "True Grit" (2010 version) w/ Barry Pepper, Matt Damon Jeff Bridges: "Hell or High Water" (2016) w/ Chris Pine, Ben Foster. Written by Taylor Sheridan Josh Brolin: "Sicario" (2015) w/ Benicio Del Toro. Written by Taylor Sheridan. Directed by Denis Villenueve

JAKH

Taylor Kitsch, playing Chris macKenzie, is Canadian. You previously saw him as US Navy Lt Mike Murphy in "Lone Survivor" and as Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". You would like him in: "John Carter" (2012)

JAKH

I had not seen this one before, glad I watched it, it was a good movie. sad when it is based on a true story. I could not help but think about my two cousins that were helping fight the LA fires last month. Glad they were safe and helped

John A

I remember feeling a stab of pain at the ending but I didn't feel it for a while watching this until I saw this reaction

DAVID COSTELLO

Don’t know if you recognized him but James Dale who played Jesse Steed, who was second in command behind SUP also played “Rone” in 13 hours.

John P Tucker

I have a lot of respect and admiration for the first responders, particularly the folks on the front lines, and it stuff like this is tragically sad. The state in which I live has the bushfires managed by many agencies that cooperate, including the world's largest volunteer fire service, New South Wales Rural Fire Service. I spent about 2 years with them helping them implement an IT system to manage and plan their work to mitigate bushfire risk in our state. Although it was incredibly challenging, learning about their work was very interesting for the most part. I understood a fair bit about what was going on in this when it came to the operations of the team. Although, most of what they were doing in the film was focused on the response side of fighting a fire, most of the stuff I was dealing with was on the prevention side, so doing a bunch of work before a fire season to clear out as much fuel as possible before a bushfire hits. Cassie, you asked about the air tanker using the water out of a private pool. Yes, that is a thing, but it would be depend on the legislation of the jurisdiction. Where I am, during a bushfire emergency the Rural Fire Service Commissioner is basically allowed to use any water source (public or private) in the state to combat the fires. Although, I doubt that size pool would fill up much of that tanker. It always reminds me of an expression that was used in "The West Wing" (but not for firefighting)... if your neighbours house is on fire, you don't argue over the cost of the hose.

Mojo One Thousand

He also did "Top Gun: Maverick", so this movie may have had a hand in the casting of Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly.

Mojo One Thousand

@ Bret, By your logic every WWII movie is a masterpiece because millions of people died so the film must be great as it was a great tragedy 🤡

Milton William Burray

Heavy subject. Great reaction! And Carly is looking fantastic these days. Preparing for that wedding day! Extra pretty these days!

Philip Alan

Great Reaction Ladies to a great story.

Rick Williams

Yeah... know what you mean. Fuck the dead fire fighters. Where's my cinematic ambiance? Such a middling tragedy.

Brett Richey

There is kind of a pronounced line between younger and older Jeff Bridges. Never really thought of it that way but it's very true.

Chris Thom

Was in sync for me all the way through. But I watched it just now.

Grad

Deepwater Horizon is excellent.

Luke Godfrey

Love you guys for these movies. Please do Deepwater Horizon and The Kingdom.

joserodriguez6195

2013

Ryan Towell

There are definitely other recognizable faces in it too!

Cole Jennett

Just finished watching this reaction. Was dreading rewatching this movie and Cassie & Carly's reaction to it as the ending broke me the first time around. It wasn't any easier this second time around either. I wish to hell this movie was fiction.

Luke Godfrey

My cousin is a wildlife firefighter and I hear all of the stories. They went and honored those guys at that tree

Drew

I have seen this multiple times now and it still hits hard. The film makers and actors did such an amazing job honoring the fallen heroes. The fact that they had an actual Granite Mountain Interagency Hot Shot Crew member in the cast who portrayed his fallen friend was just a special touch. Sadly Cass and Carly... the temperature hit over 2000F (1100C) and those fire shelters were not designed for that.

Doug Fisher

...a tough reaction

Terry Yelmene

That's really interesting. I wonder how many would want to stay with the profession if they could be regularly employed?

Chris Thom

I had already watched the first 21 minutes of the movie/reaction earlier today before I had to go in for a short work shift, when the reaction was unsynced, lol. So I restarted at roughly the 21 minute mark this evening when the syncing problem was supposed to be fixed. It was impossible to sync.

Mike LL

I just do it at the start from the opening titles before it goes blurry

Gray

Yeah, agree. Thanks for pointing out that Lithgow is in it.

Clay F

I found it entertaining and well made. The cast also includes John Lithgow.

Joe

Inmates volunteer for the program to get time off their sentence. I read it was around 15% inmates post COVID. This program has been in place for over a century.

Joe

Great reaction, your summary pretty much nails it. I had seen this before so somewhere around an hour in I started to get a tear in my eye b/c I was watching you two fall in love with them and knew what was coming. Although I felt a moment of levity at the point where Jeff Bridges was laughing (that high-pitched laugh) as it took me way back to Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), a crime caper movie he did with Clint Eastwood. For me this movie also highlights all the potential that is lost to addiction. Those people could still be heroes.

2-Can

Well I gave a second shot at trying to sync to this movie. I've been here since 2021, but I found it impossible to sync the movie to the reaction. I believe I was just a few seconds off, but the tiny blurred screen, which I am watching on a computer monitor, was too blurred. I've watched hundreds of reactions here, but I just couldn't make anything out, at all. I'm used to using the time clock to get close and then syncing visually, but I couldn't make out anything visually because it was TOO blurred. I just gave up. Too bad, because I wanted to see this movie with Cassie and Carly, and I've never seen it before.

Mike LL

You asked about the fire shelters - those are a last resort, and are not rated to withstand a fire that intense.

Brent Petty

Cole I haven't seen that one I'll have to watch that one. What a great cast. I don't think billy crudup gets enough credit.

Canadianant

In california 1/3rd of our wildfire crews are actually incarcerated inmates who make at most about $25 a day. They put their lives on the line and get paid less than other fire fighters make in an hour on average. not only that but after they’re out of prison they rarely get jobs doing what they’ve spent years training to do and risked their lives on. It’s a tragedy. oh and that’s women too. Women do this job from prisons.

djKENTO

For those who like the older version of Jeff Bridges, I recommend: THE OLD MAN S1 (2022) (7 episodes). RT = 97% --Nominated for two Emmy's including Jeff Bridges as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. I have not seen S2 (2024).

Clay F

I’m hoping they get to Inventing the Abbots one day. It was my introduction to Jennifer Connelly. Also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Liv Tyler and Billy Crudup

Cole Jennett

Taylor Kitsch is great alongside Brendan Gleason in The Grand Seduction. Fun little Canadian Maritimes movie.

Cole Jennett

they fixed it halfway through my watch probably made it a bit too blurry as it was a little tricky sync but managable.

Gray

I remember hearing about this on the news even in the UK so I was prepared for the end but still that was pretty brutal. Really well made film with some fantastic actors, I mean it even had The Dude so you can't go wrong. Glad she picked it herself so we don't feel too guilty about the biggest waterworks i've seen on the channel in a good while.

Gray

I like your post. While the movie honored the heroes (the most important for me), the movie did seem a little formulaic. While I liked the brotherhood, some of the macho/kidding around stuff was a little much (but maybe real for that group?). Seemed generally believable with some acting nuances. I think better than if Michael Bay had directed. Yet, outside of honoring the heroes (and the stark ending), the movie is not necessarily a masterpiece (just my opinion). Some of the imaging/cinematography is excellent -- I enjoyed that. Some good acting in the movie. I am a fan of Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, and Jennifer Connelly (and even Taylor Kitsch) -- so Iiked the movie star cast. I agree 100% with your sentiment regarding Jennifer Connelly.

Clay F

Shortly after filming this movie, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly filmed Top Gun: Maverick (2022) together!

fire12wife

I didn't know the ending when I saw it in theatres and though there were only a handful of us at the screening, we were all in floods at the end, even the most manly men were wiping their eyes. It's a shame this wasn't more widely seen on release. Another good film by this director is Oblivion, with Tom Cruise.

Odd Thomas

@cassie the orginal video isnt blured.. may cuase you some youtube issues.

rakesh

I guess though you liked the 3 hours and 43 minutes of LoA. Another movie that looks Majestic but was hard to get through. There have been alot of movies from the beginning of cinema that are hard to sit through. Its not just modern movies especially when its not a reboot or a sequel or reimaging

David Freese

As the wife of an IAFF Firefighter/EMT, this movie hits me right in my heart. I knew it wasn't going to be easy to watch when it came out, but it was even tougher than I imagined. I swore I'd never watch it again, but for Cassie and Carly... I'll watch it. Thank you, girls, for bringing this story to everyone!

fire12wife

What year does the movie take place in?

Chris Thom

I got the same. I started doing the one card trick I knew while impersonating Winston Churchill. The screen remained unconvinced.

Above Average Dave

Yeah I'm about 21 minutes in and am wondering what is happening with this reaction. My video is synched to theirs, but they are reacting to stuff not on the screen. Thanks for your explanation, the 30 seconds sounds about right. And also thanks for the heads up that it doesn't last the whole reaction.

Mike LL

Really underrated movie that fell through the cracks when it was released.

Lyle Morgan

Dang. I kept seeing this pop up and just skipped it figuring Backdraft forest fire edition. Had no idea was true, def should not have slept on this one.

Bubba Fett

Always the grizzled veteran, you can count on that troupe. Jennifer Connelly is indeed attractive, but could also be batsh*t crazy...just saying, LOL.

Joe

Great movie. I love true stories, and they are some of the hardest to watch because you know what you are about to see—in most cases, destroyed people's lives. Jennifer Connelly's screaming cry worked on my heartstrings. I can't imagine the tension in that room, just waiting to see who the last survivor was. Those fire shelters have saved many lives, but they're not meant for long periods of direct fire.

Eddie Perkins

I knew the story and had seen the movie, and I'm always in awe of what firefighters go through. The casting and the acting was really good I thought. The compassion and empathy you both watch with is what makes these reactions so wonderful.

Michael West

This movie gets you, when i first watched it i had no idea about the story. WOW just WOW!

Jimmy Reyes

so it's about 30 seconds out of sync until around the 32 minute mark when they pause for buffering, then it's back on track.. you will need to adjust..

Rogue_ML

Is there a more Cassie and Carly movie than this? Building a team with an cast of good looking rough necks with young families babies etc. a grizzled old veteran who's tough on them but they respect. Add in a tragic ending with the "bonus" that it's a real story. Cue the waterworks . Even if I found it by the book and too on the nose at times,(really Metallica's jump in the fire as the soundtrack as they head into the fire)🙄 that having been said even I got weepy at the end. As an aside with due respect to our wonderful and attractive hosts, is there an all-around better looking woman then Jennifer Connelly? She has aged like fine wine. Just stunning

Canadianant

Jesse was portrayed by James Badge Dale who was also Bob Leckie in The Pacific (2010) -- the guy who had the heartbreaking thing with Stella in Australia, and who wrote letters to Vera in the US (that he never mailed). Three years after this movie, Taylor Kitsch (aka Tim Riggins) is awesome as Max McLaughlin in the lead role in "The Defeated" (TV Series 2020) (1 season) (8 episodes). He is a cop from the US in Berlin during the occupation of Germany in the months immediately after the Germans surrendered in WWII.

Clay F

Heroes. First watch for me. Going in, I had a vague idea but wasn't for sure and was hoping I was wrong. You guys had an emotional reaction.

Clay F

I'm confused. Is this in sync? It seems a good bit out of sync.

James MacDonald

I used to live in Prescott, Arizona where this happened. It’s a shame the movie was not shot in the actual locations. For some reason (probably financial) the movie was filmed in neighboring New Mexico. Still it is a very good movie and an easy recommendation.

Darren Harrison

I used to live in AZ and moved out of state right before this happened. I got to work w/ some of the hotshot crews during the Cavecreek/Complex fire which was the third largest wildfire in AZ history up to that point. ( The first fire in the movie). Those guys are amazing and when this happened my heart went out to the Prescott district people, the families etc. It really "rocked" the communities in Arizona. Especially considering it was their own hot shot crew. When wildfires like this happen crews from all over come together to work, it still crazy that it was the local crew. It still breaks my heart. I'm so happy though that they made a film about it. I just wish it would have gotten more attention, it kinda flopped at the box office which is sad, cause these firefighters deserve way more.

Ryan Towell

Middling movie. I just don't like modern filmmaking style; sterile and televisual

Milton William Burray

James Badge Dale - he was in “The Pacific” & “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”

Rose

Nice when that happens.

Clay F

Most people run away from a fire, firefighters run towards one

Bill Maurer

The sync video is about 30sec off (at the start)

Matt

Not a perfect movie, but a powerful and sadly important one.

Rick Rodriguez

Whenever my sister hears those fire sirens or sees the trucks/engines speed by she’s always thinking of her baby boy - who’s now a full-grown man. I recently gifted him a game on Christmas called “Cancelled on Scene” - which helps EMS cope with the expected challenges of their profession. The emotional toll on these first responders and the hazards of their job are unknown but to them. Dangerous profession but they’re a special breed. Sadly fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service and more needs to be done to assist them when needed. Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park - definitely would love to visit it with my nephew and sister.

Rose

It just asks me to prove I'm not a bot

DAVID COSTELLO

Glad you finally got to watch my pick, I love this movie!

Seth R

This one will always make me ugly cry, especially living in SoCal and experiencing fires first hand and people like them risk everything to fight it.

Erik Locquiao

Wheres my tissues?

Matt
