American Psycho (2000) - Full Reaction

Guys. I don’t even know. I knew they were satirizing something but I wasn’t really sure what it was. Empty suits of wall street? I had so so many questions after it was over. It was definitely disturbing, Christian Bale though, wow...

American Psycho (2000) - Full Reaction

Comments

love Reg Cathey as the homeless man. Also from Pootie Tang as Dirty Dee

Huey Lewis and the News is a very successful band in the late 70s through the early 90s.

Jerrod Acree

@Mannygogou - as far people who haven’t watched the movie complaining how bad it is goes, all I can say is every Halloween people who during the whole year say they don’t watch violent movies suddenly become experts as to which horror movies are too violent/gory for Cassie to watch. So they either don’t know what they’re talking about or they’re lying about not watching violent movies. Personally I tend to think they just don’t know what they’re talking about.

Richard Maurer

Maybe I should watch it again. But good to hear its probably a-lot more nuanced than I remember it.

Art Vandalaay

He's a well known architect and importer/exporter.

FischerMax98

hateful eight, participate.

V M

To Jamie and the 8 people who upvoted whatever that thing is comment. I'm just a fan. Explain why its weird though. Show us your cognitive complexity. Troll.

V M

Yuppies were a fun crowd - ripe for ridicule. In London, there are boroughs called Streatham (pronounced Strettam), Battersea (pronounced as it reads) and Clapham (pronounced Clappam). In the 80s, the yuppies tried to adjust those pronunciations as follows: Streatham - Saint Reetham (the Saint pronounced S'nt) Battersea - B'ter-see-ya Clapham - Claahm Yes, we beat them up a lot.

Clarence Newman

There's some footage of Robert Downey Jr. doing some research on Wall Street around the time this book was released, and he honestly looks really shook. Lol. I don't know if he was in talks to play Patrick Bateman after Less Than Zero or what...but he looks disturbed just walking around and viewing the trading room floor. The intensity of that job, plus the cocaine, plus the go-getter 80's...to some I would bet that particular zeitgeist did feel psychopathic. This was an extreme depiction obviously. But I think sometimes art is meant to paint the picture of that extremity to show what might seem like an inevitable conclusion for some with those habits or treading in that culture.

Chris Thom

Yeah, that line made me laugh. I remember those days.

Stephen Dias

Like young urban professional guppies.

Chris Thom

This isn't my kind of movie, even though I like movies that make you second-guess yourself. The violence doesn't bother me nearly as much as everyone talking like Yuppies did—or was that Guppies?

Eddie Perkins

That's an excellent classic

Eddie Perkins

Anyone reading this far has already seen it.

N M

But not a Marine Biologist.

N M

George uses the alias to pretend to be an architect, businessman, and author

Clay F

Damn I missed this announcement, I was busy returning some video tapes

fargoboyle .

Thanks. Good to know. When I saw the author's name in the credits, I was pretty sure he was the same dude who wrote "Less Than Zero." Turns out he is; I wasn't interested in that movie (or book) either. You never know, though; a good writer can change my opinion.

Stephen Dias

My feelings are pretty much like Cassie's: what did I just watch? This movie has been referenced in other media, so I knew I'd get around to it eventually. Yes, Christian Bale and the other actors gave great performances, but I prefer their other movies, because of the subject matter.

Stephen Dias

Yeah it was definitely left ambiguous. But that scene with the bartender right from the get made it seem like his latent fantasy dark side that no one could actually see or hear. Which was a statement in itself I guess. No one cared enough to notice.

Chris Thom

To be honest this movie really isn't for me. The only reason I watched it for a second time was to see Cassie's reaction to it. I must admit, it was a little fun watching her try to figure out what she was watching. She definitely caught on to the fact that it was all in his head quicker than I did when I first watched it. P.s. I'm just about to start rewatching The Good Place for the millionth time. I really need a comedy pallet cleanser after this movie.

Luke Godfrey

Well PG in the sixties is a close to rated r for the time. Most films hung around the pg rating because it was more available and made more money. R didn't become a money maker till the 80s. Do you know even with certain scenes and the subject matter Planet of The Apes was rated G? Different times 60 years ago.

David Freese

I understand what your saying but almost every top viewed reaction was a super blockbuster , war movie, or was funny maybe even dumb. I don't think people will flock to this and The Shining did not do as well as you think cause 400k in almost the 4 years its been out is less than half of her earlier reactions for the time period. People on YouTube flick to things like Terminator 2 or Deadpool movies. This will have decent views but it'll still be run of the mill.

David Freese

This is part of my other comment. When it comes to horror or just dumb but fun movies in general get ripped to shreds but the dark artsy films are ok to show Cassie. I think overall we have gotten to a point that she watches to much dark stuff or watches it to close together with same type of films. I'm still astonished that Beverly Hills Cop has sit at #1 for so long but hasn't been seen yet. I think we need to move to more light fun movies more often that are still outside her wheelhouse .

David Freese

I don't completely agree cause I enjoy several horror films and get disappointed that we get horror lite every October buttt..... I don't vote for things like this unless its the top choice. I felt there were better options on the poll but gor out voted. I can say rewatching yesterday that this was different than I remembered. I do think the light hearted fun movies are usually out voted so we get the darker movies more often.

David Freese

Where did I say that? I was trying to stay vague so I didn’t spoil anything, but you do you.

Brian Lowery

So, [SPOILER ALERT] everything about the police investigation about Paul Allen’s disappearance, and the whole character of Willem Defoe, never actually existed? Just a figment of his imagination?

N M

Lawrence of Arabia is not bloody. It’s PG and 60 years old.

djKENTO

I think the film did everything to understate it's more sensational aspects like hinting at a killing when Bateman absently plays with a lock of blonde hair between his fingers rather than show what happened to the victim, or keeping most of the onscreen violence just peripheral to the camera

Milton William Burray

Fun Fact: Reese Witherspoon filmed this before Legally Blonde and it was one of the main inspirations for the character.

Chris Thom

Personally, it’s one of my favorites. Christian Bale is amazing and it also had a female director in Mary Harron. They both actually see this as a dark comedy, and I actually see why at times. The book is way worse, though, so I’d recommend not reading it if you were bothered by the movie. 😅

Tony Cheek

No, I think they're talking about the author.

Fritz

Was Art Vandalay the Importer/Exporter? Or the Architect?

N M

Sometimes just restarting the computer fixes that kind of thing. Windows and google do a TON of updates that messes with everything.

Chris Thom

Yeah I never thought of it as being something so negative either. But I think the idea was that Yuppies contrasted the peace and love generation. Like people were were worried what might happen if the hippies took a hard turn in the other direction and sold out all their idealism. Kind of like how the Manson Family was somewhat born out of the hippy movement.

Chris Thom

Surprised she didn't recognize the name. I thought he was way more famous than that.

Chris Thom

Yeah mine were too.. and its like when I logged in here I wasnt logged in and when I go to my other screen name it says Im not supporting anyone.. and I know I do pay 10 a month to be a patreon for Cassie

Everyman Movie Critic

I think my Patreon, Google, and YouTube accounts are all linked somehow. Not sure how it works but it does make signing in easier.

Chris Thom

Feud is definitely worth seeing. But I know it's hard to find on streaming for some reason. Very much a Ryan Murphy show in style and substance.

Chris Thom

Yes great Michael Mann movie. Some of those shots are so beautiful to look at. Some of his cinematography is my all time favorite. But yeah also the first appearance of Hannibal 'Lekter'.

Chris Thom

Ohhhhh that's right. I was thinking it was from Parks and Rec at first.

Chris Thom

I haven’t experienced that particular problem but have experienced others. I assume the app is just glitchy.

Just Plain Bob

I just now checked. The Fighter is listed as “unseen” at popcornrequests.com with 14 requests. I have not checked her Letterboxd

Clay F

Anyone else having an issue with their account? I did join her patreon.. the 10 dollar level like a year ago.. today I click on her patreon page and all the notifications were gone and it made me re-sign up for her page.. not sure what happened.

Everyman Movie Critic

Erin Caffey scares me more than Bale’s Patrick Bateman.

Rose

Have you seen “Manhunter” (1986)? I also enjoyed that one.

Rose

I believe she has seen the Fighter, before the channel started.

K V

Iron Eagle was cheesy as can be, but I loved that movie as a kid way more than Top Gun. Music and missles 🤟

K V

The fact that a Howard the Duck reaction got over 50k shows that anyone will watch Cassie watch anything lol

Jason Dolan

I still haven’t seen Feud but their rivalry was insane. How they abused each other both verbally and physically on set for Baby Jane - and then what happened at the Oscars - when Davis had to watch Crawford go up to accept the award for Best Actress on behalf of Anne Bancroft. They had mutual respect for each other’s talents but this rivalry was the stuff of legends.

Rose

Ha.. It’s from Seinfeld. George’s pseudonym.. 👍

Art Vandalaay

Why does your screen name sound so familiar? I know I've heard that before I'm bugging out trying to remember.

Chris Thom

Still haven't seen that. But Feud: Betty vs. Joan was pretty good. Fascinating story.

Chris Thom

Great performance by James Vander Beak. Also loved Shanyn Sossamon in that.

Chris Thom

There's some quality films with darker themes. Black Swan for instance, for almost all the other Darren Aronofsky movies. Or Less Than Zero, and Rules of Attraction by Brett Easton Ellis. Or Devil's Advocate, Pan's Labrynth, 8mm, Heathers, Girl Interrupted, Insomnia etc. Movies that don't necessarily belong in October, but can be a bit scary. Not that the channel should be all dark all the time or anything...but there's SOME that would be nice to see on the channel for a fuller view of the cinematic experience. And life, or course.

Chris Thom

His emotion at the end does make it appear that he's not a pure psychopath...that its maybe it's more a critique of the culture.

Chris Thom

I don’t like the film. Haven’t seen it since it came out but at the time, I felt, it just tried too hard to be outrageous and edgy.

Art Vandalaay

I think another classic released the same year as LoA that would be great for Cassie would be “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” (1962)

Rose

Using her image as your avatar is well weird

Jamie

There's often an air of "I don't like this so you shouldn't either" going around and it's not exclusive to PiB. Having someone like Cassie watch a film you really like is cool, and don't let negative people sully that for you.

Archronos

So you guys are saying that there is a chance.

Uncle Phoenix

True Grit?

V M

I also noticed she used the word "Yuppies" ... and actually wasn't it written on the wall in the movie? I actually don't understand but I still chuckle... (I looked up the definition of yuppie... and it does fit... but also I never associated it with cutthroat behavior lol... is it just me? haha)

Mannygogou

I could be in the small group who actually "like" this movie... and so I didn't vote for it just because it would make a great reaction. It was the opposite and I was very concerned that she would be "brainwashed" by a certain group... but I was happy she understood what the movie was about, that it's satire "about something" and that it isn't really easily understood. It's okay not to get it in the end... but also I feel she got it (in the middle). Is it really realistic that all of the members have seen this movie? Personally I never wanted to watch this movie because I thought it wasn't for me. Until I watched it I didn't think I would be a fan. Anyway so how many else have not watched it but making a stand that it has no value? I never would have voted for this film had I not personally watched it recently... But okay, if this does get good YT viewership numbers then that would be a nice bonus too.

Mannygogou

I think you have a lot of good points there. For example some of us when alone in our cars and we get cut off by someone, we might start screaming and raging at them in our locked up car where no one can hear us... In our defense for those who may have done this at one time... Driving is actually very serious business because people can get killed, and a car is a dangerous lethal weapon. This is in the back of our minds therefore when we see dangerous or reckless behavior we might... lose our cool. If such is the case then for Bateman, this thing that he is entangled in... it might be life or death for him. And what is it?, he is "trying to fit in" and it may literally feel like life and death for him. He has escalated the stakes to an impossibly high level in his daily life of trying to fit in. If he is a bit crazy and insane, there's a reason for it... and we might say he has mental health issues. Like you say maybe undiagnosed...(?) (There is actually prescriptions pills that we see twice... near the beginning we see the bottle with his name... and at the very end at the phone booth he is taking too many of these pills...) One other point, in defense of "empty" people. I think the movie may be criticizing Wall Street... or the financial institutions there. Or are they trying to show what is required of those people who work there? They have to become like all those friends of Partrick's... they become "empty" because that is what's required of them. Do they create the system or are they also victims of the system? In supposedly more enlightened times, you don't attack the person with mental health issues, you try to attack the source of the issues (right or wrong I don't know). We sometimes give certain people a pass for their wrongdoing but we don't give other people a pass... This is not necessarily right. Therefore labeling a group of people as "empty" may not be on target. We do not see in the film whether they are good at their jobs or not... but it seems like we're throwing them all into a pile of "bad people" because those are the assumptions that is acceptable by a certain group in society, but why is it okay for that group to criticize another group? We may argue that those who make assumptions are the ones who are in the wrong. Anyway I agree that it seems like Patrick Bateman has mental issues. I think society as a whole may be the culprit. He just happen to accidentally be in that Wall Street environment. I don't actually want to defend Wall Street but maybe acknowledging that they're part of the economic success of a certain superpower we call the U.S. The "psycho" in the title is an "American" psycho... and uniquely... and part of... The American Dream (tm). And this is why this movie is legend...!

Mannygogou

Mark, I will also add that my experience in watching Cassie’s reactions is that they can be quite unpredictable. She has liked movies I didn’t think she’d like and been underwhelmed by movies I thought she’d love. For example, she loved “Tucker and Dale vs Evil.” I thought she might find it mildly amusing and was delighted when she had such an enthusiastic reaction. On the other hand, I didn’t think there was much she’d find objectionable about “Scream”, since I viewed it as satire and not at all scary. She was horrified and hated it. For these and other reasons, I do what Richard does and just vote for the movies I like most. In this particular case, there were two other movies on the poll that I much preferred to AP but, unfortunately for me, neither one had a chance. Thankfully, as I said before, this reaction turned out to be better than the movie itself IMO.

Just Plain Bob

Thanks Bob and Richard, I was thinking about AP reaction than Cassie’s reactions in general. As I do find many of her reaction interesting. I haven’t watched this yet, as I will wait for the tube edit, but I did watch her intro/outro and skimmed though to see some of her reaction. I was confused as to what could be interesting about a reaction, from what I have only briefly seen, where she seems at time uncomfortable with some of the scenes and the way she described her feelings at the end. However, thanks Bob, I get it now, so if I have this right, you are interested in how Cassie thinks about the underlying reasoning for the movie and her thoughts. Like, how she figures a movie out. Maybe this could answered a bigger question for me. I think some of us look for what Cassie is thinking about a movie, than what she is feeling about a movie. Maybe I’m looking for more, what she is feeling than thinking about a movie. Maybe that might answer some of the differences in movie choice, different patrons have for Cassie, in terms of what kinda reaction we want or would like to see. Oh, just maybe I’m overthinking this as I usually do🤪😂 Thanks Bob and Richard. I will just add, I have seen AP twice before, it’s ok, neither bad or good. I’ve said before, it’s got artistic merit and Bales performance is very good. Just not a movie for me.

Mark White

Iron Eagle was great. It was ment to be a campy fun action ride. Is it an Oscar worthy movie. God no, but it wasn't trying to be. Movies like Iron Eagle and it's sequels or even like the Wraith from the same year are just supposed to be campy genre schlock. They are low budget fun and all of them do a amazing job at just being that.

Richard Palmer

There's a movie that many people enjoy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's a comedy, it's funny... but there is a lot of killing and a lot of bloody gore in it. The Black Knight throws a longsword into the eye opening of his opponent's visor... skewering the guy through the head basically. Everyone watching is taken aback and cries out "Ewww" or something while cringing in horror. There's a scene where a wedding party (spoilers) is set upon by Sir Lancelot... Anyway it could easily be gorier than American Psycho... with a much higher body count. Are certain types of viewers organizing to ban this comedy?... Not really.

Mannygogou

I agree with both @Bob and @Richard's answers to this question, and I feel the need to add my own perspective. Now this is not necessarily defining what one person finds interesting or un interesting. I think Bob and Richard both nailed it, but the reason I started fallowing Cassie and other reaction channels, PIB being the only one I support on Patreon. Because even if I don't agree with her take I find her taked entertaining to watch. Now my personal enjoyment from this side of YouTube IE the movie reaction channels, is as a Cinephile I've seen most of theses movie that people reaction too hundreds if not thousands of times. These channels allow me the opportunity to enjoy some of the movies I've loved for so long like it's the first time again. All be it through someone else's eyes. Sure we don't always agree with what each other see as a good movie but the reactions we do get let me personally relive the joys, terrors, or heart break theses movies made me feel the first time I saw them. For me that means a lot.

Richard Palmer

Yep, good movie, I think Equilibrium suffered because it came out at the same timeish as the matrix sequels. It has a similar feel to the matrix movies. But the sequels were not as good and Equilibrium got caught up in the poor reception to the matrix sequels.

Mark White

It's very simple - this movie is satire. The director said the crew didn't even realize "it was supposed to be funny" as they were filming it... but the finished film is indeed supposed to be funny. The director got a lot of flack from viewers who didn't get it. Cassie knew it was satire before she watched it. Also about the violence - most of it is hidden. We don't see the axe... we can barely even see the stabbing... the knife wasn't even visible or it was a tiny knife. The chainsaw (spoilers lol) is hard to make out, it's so far away. The violence is basically all psychological. The cat wasn't even harmed I think it got away. So basically... many viewers who never laughed at any point, maybe they didn't get it. You can watch Cassie smiling... as we see newspapers surrounding a couch. It's very funny until it becomes shocking. And again the axe was off camera.

Mannygogou

I knew she would hate this. Shoulda gone with LadyHawke.

Super Powered Design (Jim)

Mark, what I find interesting in Cassie’s reactions varies from movie to movie, but usually it has to do with her figuring out for herself what’s happening and what it means. For instance, she openly grappled in this reaction with what was real vs imagined. She also wondered about the underlying meaning. And I think she nailed it on both counts (at least, given how subjective the movie is, as much as anyone could “nail it”). I actually enjoyed her reaction to the movie much more than the film itself for that very reason (as I’ve said before, I don’t particularly like this movie - I don’t dislike it either, it’s just ok IMO). When she reacted to “The Shining”, I thought it was interesting that she believed the Overlook was not haunted, wondering at one point how the door to the pantry could be unlocked from outside, since she had concluded it was all in Jack’s head. That the Overlook might not be haunted never even crossed my mind, but seeing her draw that conclusion was interesting to me. She saw the movie in an entirely different light than I did. She wasn’t enamored of “The Shining”, but her reaction was one of my favorites for those reasons. Those are just two examples; there are many more.

Just Plain Bob

The ‘80s, you had to be there. All style, no substance. The movie did a good job of answering the question of whether this was a psychotic fever dream or it actually happened. You just had to look at the hints. The apartment scene, and the tone in the agent’s voice, tells it all. In case you were wondering, madness runs in the Bateman family. Patrick’s little brother, Sean, is the protagonist of The Rules of Attraction. Another movie based on a Bret Easton Ellis novel.

Brian Lowery

@ Mark - I know you didn’t ask me but I’m going to give my take anyway. For me an interesting reaction is when Cassie is, as she put it, outside her comfort zone. When Cassie watches and loves a film in her comfort zone that’s fine, but I’ve seen that reaction many, many times before. I’m looking for something different, something where she’s experiencing something new , trying to wrap her head it around it, even if she doesn’t always succeed. One of my favorite examples is The Crow reaction. I love that movie, Cassie didn’t, but that didn’t matter to me because it was something new to her, and watching her trying make sense of it was entertaining to me. Another example is LotR. Now we both love those movies but at the time it was a whole new experience for her. So it comes down to I’d rather watch her experience something different than the easy, safe choices.

Richard Maurer

Hi Bob, I have a question? I’ve seen quite a few people say they find “Cassie reaction interesting” I’m just interested as to what it is that’s interesting? As no one I’ve seen so far, go further on explaining what’s interesting? Just curious 🙂

Mark White

This movie was funnier than I remembered. Great reaction!

Daniel Karlsson

Well. Iron Eagle is what you get when the studio only gives you $10 Million and the US Military won’t work with you. So given the givens, I think that they did a really great job. The film did end up grossing $35 Million.

Uncle Phoenix

Just to make sure it’s clear Salo is on par with things like Cannibal Holocaust. So worse than Human Centipede. So yeah, it will never be on this channel.

Richard Maurer

Salo, lol I remember that one. Yeah, not a film that will ever make it on here. Unless Cannibal Holocaust does, then all bets are off.

Richard Maurer

They like the film? that’s the most likely reason.

Richard Maurer

American Psycho is a popular film, and it's not even particularly graphic, Braveheart is 10X more violent

Milton William Burray

Iron Eagle (1986) is great. +1

Larry Darrell

I got it, don’t particularly like it, fine with Cassie reacting to it, although I would have preferred other films in the poll.

Richard Maurer

Some people here hate any movie with violence in it, and have a hissy fit if anyone votes in a violent movie. Just ignore them, they’ve reached the point of self parody now - they’re a joke with a bad punchline.

Richard Maurer

Nobody really cares about HtD, some YouTubers thought it would be funny to get her to watch it. Still more of a entertaining reaction than a lot of the rom-com ones though.

Richard Maurer

Our little Cassie is growing up /s.

Richard Maurer

Equilibrium is a good, underrated Christian Bale film. It’s basically if you took the books Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, combined them, and then made an action film based on that combo. Entertaining movie.

Richard Maurer

People who vote for a "dodgy" film because they genuinely like it (even if it's a perverse kind of liking - I would vote for Rhinestone (1984), for example) are free from criticism in regard to this post. I have no doubt many people voted for AP because they like it. I am also convinced it only *won* because of the point I'm making.

Clarence Newman

Iron Eagle is pure 80’s cheese and like most cheese it doesn’t age that well, especially over decades.

Richard Maurer

Can’t speak for everyone but I vote for the best film in the poll, often having to change to the best film in poll that has a chance to win. No other considerations needed. I like horror and would tend to vote for a horror film over other genres whenever they appear in polls. I didn’t vote for AP because there was a film in the poll I liked better - simple as that. No other considerations needed. If AP had been the best film in the poll ( I don’t hate this film, don’t really like it either) I would have voted for it. People here have in the past tried to put their “sadist” baggage on me for supporting certain films (mostly horror but other genres too), and while I won’t claim that that nonsense didn’t bother me, I certainly never let it change my vote. I don’t let other people’s opinions sway me that much.

Richard Maurer

Or possibly people voted for it because they like it. It has an audience approval rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.6 on IMDB. It’s a well liked movie by many. I really don’t know why anyone needs to read more into it than that. I particularly don’t understand the need to vilify those that voted for it and assume they had the worst possible motivations. Speaking as a fan of the horror genre, I don’t really care for this film, although I did find Cassie’s reaction interesting. There were at least two movies on this particular poll that I would have preferred, though.

Just Plain Bob

Playing Devil's Advocate here, it occurs to me that there might be a reason beyond sadism that makes folks vote for films like this on polls. Bear with me here, but could it be that horror fans (ie those with a high tolerance for X-rated stuff) only really have October to indulge their favourite genres, yet, even then, constantly have to battle to get the heavier ones watched? (And I'm guilty of white knighting there. I sometimes go full Jon Snow in October.) That being a very real possibility, could it further be that they vote for the heavier films on polls outside of October as a way of getting even? And when I say that, I don't necessarily mean "don't get mad, get even", I mean they do it to even things up. A possible hypossible?

Clarence Newman

Very true , Manny, and he's right. Sometimes it's nice to know where things will end up and what the gig is all about (Croc Dundee 2, for example, where we always knew Mick would win and the fun is in seeing how), but sometimes it's better not to know so the audience can figure it out. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (which I watched last night) is a superb example. You never know how it's going to turn out and it kind of never really does, but it's riveting for that very reason. This is a different form of art, of course, but the bad side of Tarantino's point was the album "Two Virgins" by John Lennon & Yoko Ono. John's take on that was "We wanted to give the people something they could interpret in their own, unique way. We'll leave it to them to make it into art." No, John. That's your bloody job!

Clarence Newman

The Cassie-isms are a big reason why we're all here. Another example was in Smokey and the Bandit when Bandit and Frog were saying goodbye at the truck stop. With a little shrug, Cassie casually observes, "I thought they were gonna jump each other."

Clarence Newman

It was a pigtail-pull, JL. You'll get used to it.

Clarence Newman

She reacted to the extended version

Clay F

I bicker with no man, Sean. Although I did bicker a bit over Howard the Duck. It was very bickerworthy.

Clarence Newman

Yeah, that's average. I would never say that movie would garner high views. I'm not sure who would think that. Horrible movie.

Philip Alan

I think maybe it's like "Psycho", where the story hinges on the distinction between psychosis and pychopathy.

Ben Livingstone

I heard the exact same thing about Howard the Duck and it currently has around 58k views after a month or so which is terrible by PIB standards

Shawn Kildal

Havent heard of this movie

V M

Cliff, Claire, Rudy, Nessa, and the 2 others were before her time. lol

N M

Like a machine trying to sound like a human.

Stick Figure Studios

Bale's performance in this always reminded me of Brent Spiner as Lt. Commander Data from Star Trek: TNG. Especially the part where he's talking about Huey Lewis, he sounds like Data or Lore.

Lynden

Empire of the Sun was so good. I would like to see it again; but I know I won’t unless Cassie reacts to it.

Uncle Phoenix

Ok guys, now that we are deep in the 80’s; and we can all agree that Top Gun (1986) was better than Iron Eagle (1986). Do you guys think that Cassie would like Iron Eagle (1986) ? Asking for a Friend.

Uncle Phoenix

Unfort

V M

Overture, Curtains, Lights... Oh wait, I did that already

V M

I dont think shes that hyperfocused on the monetary aspects of the channel,. nor is she hurting for extra coin, but I wish I had invested my life savings in the PiB IPO :P

V M

Same lol As a kid that was my Jason Bourne phase where it was the best movie to ever come out and I couldn’t help but watch it religiously. My cousin never saw it so we watched it for fun and she ended up becoming a hardcore Newsies fan.

Rose

1:43:45 You do know Huey Lewis and the News from one of your favorite movies —- BACK TO THE FUTURE! Huey Lewis sang the title song, “Power of Love”. Huey Lewis also appeared in the film itself. He was the guy at the gym holding a bullhorn and wearing a tan wool plaid jacket, who told Marty McFly and The Pinheads that they were “just too darn loud” and rejected them for the school dance that they auditioned for at the beginning of the film.

N M

Christian Bale said in an interview he hung out with Wall Street bankers to research the role, they told him they were probably making more money now in the 90s but that in the 1980s they were like rock stars

Milton William Burray

There's hardly any gore or nudity

Milton William Burray

Maybe don't think hot guys in expensive suits are good people on the inside because they look good on the outside

Milton William Burray

There's very little gore, and just one graphic sex depiction

Milton William Burray

Love how psyched she gets when she finds the right word. lol

Chris Thom

I wonder what would be this movie without the gruesome killings. Say you just see Bateman drawing in his agenda... would it hold up? I don't know if the killings are true or not, but our interest is there only because we think they are. Could it be that this movie is not only a satire of empty Wall Street people but also a social comment on those who liked it?

René Ferland

Machinist another extreme body transformation. That one was scary.

Chris Thom

I didn't either but majority rules righr?

David Freese

Both good

Clay F

If I may, I would add two others really worth watching: The Machinist and Hostiles.

Oisin Clissmann

I think the 10 seconds I watched Cassie look stunned as the credits rolled, was truly worth watching this again. What a trooper. Tons of quoteables from this movie... the music blurbs, I am told, were from the book. My favorite moment is the phone call to his lawyer. Just watching him completely unravel. Another great reaction. 👍 👍

Michael Enos

I was a big fan of Newsies as a kid. Not too many have even heard of it though. Lol. Thought it was the biggest thing ever when I was young. Still the first thing I think of when I think of Christian Bale and Ann Margaret.

Chris Thom

I'd love to see reactions to these movies as Bale is my favourite actor and the movies are fantastic. Empire has already lost a couple of polls though so I'm not sure when it will come up again and not sure where the Fighter is on her list of suggested movies.

Oisin Clissmann

Please try "Strange Darling" it's another great twisted movie .

Johnny Salinas

I haven’t seen this movie since it was first released but now I wished there was a Paul Allen morning routine … Beauty YouTubers & Batman v. the worst Joker. (Also Margot Robbie’s beauty routine is just as good). Always have been a fan of Christian Bale since “Empire of the Sun.” I love him in the cult classic “Newsies” (1992), which is based on a true story. Bale was cast before the movie switched to being a musical but he had no musical training and tried to get out of doing the musical numbers because he was actually terrified. Still Bale is way too talented and with the help of Madonna’s vocal coach, Joan Lader, he and co-star David Moscow had a blast doing “Newsies” and randomly did sing-offs on set. Btw - I hope LoA won’t be released in the early morning hours. I need my beauty sleep Cassie lol and it’s going to be a long reaction.

Rose

As others have mentioned, I recommend these two Christian Bale movies: 1. EMPIRE OF THE SUN (1987) (nominated for 7 Oscars). Christian Bale at age 13 as lead actor. You can already tell he is a good actor. Also has John Malkovich. 2. THE FIGHTER (2010). Bale won Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The Fighter nom for 7 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams).

Clay F

You survived. (I liked Mindhunter.) I found this movie interesting back in my 30's but the movie a little much for me now. Yet, I get the satire, and Bale gives an awesome performance. Huey Lewis -- of "Huey Lewis and the News" (a pop rock band in the 1980s) -- was in Back to the Future (1985) you reacted to. Huey Lewis was the guy who told Marty his band was too loud and thus rejected A couple of songs (e.g., The Power of Love) by the band "Huey Lewis and the News" played in Back to the Future (1985).

Clay F

Yeah, she didn't flinch during the threesome scene. Which I thought for sure we'd get a "dutdedoooooo" from her as she looks away! :)

Philip Alan

I didn't get that impression. I got the impression she hated scary movies, but thought The Shining was a great movie in that it accomplished its goal. American Psycho just isn't a very good movie, and had things in it we know Cassie doesn't like (gore, nudity, sex, etc...). It's one thing to have her sit through a scary movie. It's another to make her watch things which make her truly uncomfortable simply because of subject matter. If you don't understand the difference, I can't help you.

Art of Free Speech

Only if his parents would’ve made a big deal of it, which they didn’t. Because it’s not a big deal. And neither is it in regard to this channel. We’re getting sidetracked. Some of us think it’s a great movie that’ll make for a great reaction. She has people around her that will advise her on what’s too much and this wasn’t. Notice in the ending, she’s fascinated by the film and wants to learn more about it. Win-win.

Shehab Dawoud

It's for people with a broader taste in films... It's okay if you don't get it.

Stephen

I couldn't see the watermark either.

Brian's Dog

No real interest in watching this movie again. Didn’t particularly enjoy it the first time I watched it Maybe l’ll watch the YouTube edit. Mainly to help the channel. And perhaps morbid curiosity to hear your thoughts Cassie

Robert da Spruce

Doesn't get much 'worse' than Mindhunter. And that was made to be true to life, and based on real people. This is just over the top and hard to take seriously.

Chris Thom

I'm not sure she's become jaded. As violent as this movie is it's not overly filled with graphic gore. I think she's definitely developed thicker skin when it comes to violence and gore, but this one isn't as graphic as it could be, especially with its sorce material.

Richard Palmer

Should have read this before watching

Philip G.

I get people chose this because they thought it would make for a great reaction ..but am I alone thinking Cassie didn't really react to shocking scenes as animated as we expected ? Maybe she's jaded at this point where gore doesn't elicit that much of a response .

Philip G.

So you would have deprived a young boy with athletic aspirations the chance to play a sport and learn valuable skills because he couldn’t handle horror movies you deemed appropriate for the team. 🙄

Dan M

"Yuppies... Is that a word? Or is that a fish?" Lol It's always fun to watch people's reactions at the end of this film, trying to piece the whole thing together. Christian Bale is superb in this, and it's one of my favourite movies for sure.

Stephen

Apparently Tarantino said something like... he doesn't want to explain a movie because he would be "taking the movie away from you" the viewer. This makes sense, the movie is experienced uniquely by the viewer and all the information is there. To me once a piece of art is completed it has to live on its own without the creator being required to explain it - right or wrong, confusing or whatever. Sometimes a movie makes you think and you will be enriched by that. Something being explained to you robs you of that opportunity not only to puzzle things out but also to come to a realization yourself.

Mannygogou

Try reading the book haha

Philip G.

i'd never seen this movie before today, but actually really loved it! Awesome performance by Christian Bale and I'm really into the ambiguity at the end of the movie. Super interesting to me. The constant infantilazation of Cassie in the comment section is actually more disturbing than anything in this movie. She's not your sister, she's not your daughter. She's a grown woman running a business.

Nick Ireland

Nahh you're fine. I voted for this too. I love this movie it's so disturbing and insane. Also @Phillip Alan is right. She needs movies like this to grab views. Reactions like this will make her some money off the Horror hounds. I plan on posting this on the Ice Nine Kills fan site when it hits YouTube. INK's fans love this movie and the band even made a song inspired by the movie. They also did a cover of Walking on Sunshine with Real Big Fish for the American Psycho comic book soundtrack.

Richard Palmer

Cassie I am totally with you ... Im actually surprised you watched this one and put it on here with the over the top gore and sex... if you do a YT edit, it'll be like 7 min long.. I only saw this yuck fest once when it first came out in the theater cause I was working at a movie theater at the time and was roped into it.. I too came out of it like what the heck did I just watch. I couldnt watch it this time with you my friend.. not my cup of tea.. After watching this.. now you should go watch a wholesome movie like 10 times in a row to wipe it from your mind.. cause those are some images that are gonna be stuck in your brain for a while.. I hope you dont get nightmares. And I did love your diplomacy when doing your critique at the end of the video... well played.

Johnny Bullis

Don't feel guilty.

Philip Alan

What some people seem to forget here is... Popcorn In Bed is a business. When people see "American Psycho" on Cassie's YouTube, you better believe they're RACING to click on it. It's not that difficult to understand. It can't be all daisies & lollipops here. She HATED The Shining, but it made for a fantastic reaction video (one of my favs). 400K views. Cassie got paid. I'm not sure how this reaction will do on the channel, but she needs these types of movie reactions to make that extra coin.

Philip Alan

I voted for this movie. Some of the comments are making me feel guilty. Please help me!!!!!

Grégory Gautier

On a side note. This was turned into a musical, and Doctor Who himself Matt Smith played Patrick in London. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Psycho_(musical)#:~:text=The%20Musical&text=A%20Broadway%20production%20began%20preview,Benjamin%20Walker%20as%20Patrick%20Bateman.

Richard Palmer

The director when working on other shoots says that fans of this movie always come to her and say how much they loved American Psycho. And that they've watched it 30 times. The director said of Christian Bale, "His physical preparation was beyond what I expected." He went through a complete physical transformation to become Bateman "right in front of our eyes." He ate only grilled chicken! A bit of trivia, Leonardo DiCaprio hijacked the movie for a while as he wanted to play the role of Patrick Bateman. After that fell apart they rehired the original director and it went through with Bale as the original choice. Oh, I said I wouldn't look for explanations of the movie since I want to see if it will come to me eventually but there's a Q&A with the director so I'll watch that. Funny enough another video is titled "24 years later I finally understand American Psycho" lol. Also yes, everything about it has been controversial and misunderstood through and through.

Mannygogou

I would’ve told them to move along or take their son off the team if they’re unhappy. I don’t want any wimps on my team either, I want mentally tough warriors!

Shehab Dawoud

You’re missing the point. You took it upon yourself to show children movies that may have had some questionable material and frightening images. You said they had a great time. But what if one or more of them had a bad experience from watching what you showed them…and that bad experience led to further issues later on. How were you going to explain that to their parents?

Dan M

The Shining. One of her best reactions. She hated it.

Philip Alan

Stagecoach, in particular.

Philip Alan

I don't know, this movie makes me smile/laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. I'm sure that was the point. Right? RIGHT?? Ha!

Philip Alan

One thing is certain... this movie has one heck of a soundtrack. Any movie opening up with New Order playing is solid in my book! :)

Philip Alan

^this

Philip Alan

Also that score by Thomas Newman was some dark magic. Definitely top four movie composer of all time for me.

Chris Thom

Yeah RDJ made that feel VERY real. Could definitely tell he was pulling on some real experiences there. He was definitely the standout, but Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz were also really good. Jamie played denial very well.

Chris Thom

Great, interesting and disturbing movie. Unfortunately I can already tell what Cassies reaction would be like. This is not a movie for her, but it is good she is seeing it, because it is a big part of pop culture.

Vwlss Nvwls

Fortunately I knew the parents well and they weren’t sensitive. They took it like Gs.

Shehab Dawoud

That’s bone.

N M

Or maybe he just sensitized himself to other things

Stick Figure Studios

@Shehab I’m sure they did. And I’d have a blast watching you try and explain why you thought it was okay to show my 11 year old horror movies without my permission. I bet you’d feel a little uncomfortable. How funny would that be?

Dan M

I like Mario Bava and Giallo in general, but I'm not familiar with that one. Will have to check it out

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely EMPIRE OF THE SUN. I've been pushing that one for a while. I would also like to see a reaction to RESCUE DAWN because that opens the door to the cinema of Werner Herzog.

Stick Figure Studios

@Richard; She has been warned about the opening overture. She's already seen several films that have one, so she knows what they are

Stick Figure Studios

@Alex: I said that very thing back when I saw this week's schedule. It would be a palate cleanser.

Stick Figure Studios

It's hysterical

Stick Figure Studios

I do.

Stick Figure Studios

I still think Cassie's reaction to AOAAG was heavily affected by her belief it was some kind of romcom. If she went into it understanding it was a dark themed coming of age story, I think she'd have liked it a lot more.

Art of Free Speech

From a cinema fan point-of-view its definitely a point of interest. But ya. Lol. Its rough.

Gro Do

Yes to all those John Wayne movies

Stick Figure Studios

To be fair, RDJr. wasn't really acting in that movie. As usual, he just played himself. That said, I love Less Than Zero. It's one of those movies which, even though it's a drama and there are really zero action scenes, still manages to maintain it's intensity throughout, and keep you glued to the screen. Man... the more I think about it, I think I really do like films with dark themes... Less Than Zero, An Officer and a Gentleman, American Beauty, Cider House Rules, etc... all great films which definitely have darker themes.

Art of Free Speech

EMPIRE OF THE SUN is a very underappreciated Spielberg film that I've been pushing for a reaction to for a long time

Stick Figure Studios

Not sure if I was ever a big fan, but "If This is It" is one of the greatest all time break up songs.

Art of Free Speech

"I'm willing to bet that she would not have chosen to watch many of those movies on her own, and watched them because they won polls like this one." - yes, wasn't that the entire premise of her reaction channel when she originally set it up, that she was going to watch films outside of her comfort zone? How many times has she watched a film and said that it's something she never would have imagined watching before the channel but she ended up liking or admiring them? American Psycho is a dark film, but it's also a very popular film that's widely regarded as a brilliantly funny and incisive movie with a great star performance. It's not like we're out here recommending Pasolini's Salò. The idea that it's somehow cruel to recommend a film like this is frankly absurd.

Henry Graham

@Dan The boys had a great time😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Shehab Dawoud

@Shehab If you were coaching my 11 year old child, and you showed him or her horror movies without my consent , you’d have a lot of explaining to do.

Dan M

I dont know man, some of us like this movie and voted for it, not that complicated

Choof

Lawrence of Arabia is one of the beautifully shot movies ever made, but Cassie needs to be ready for the opening of it. The first time I watched it I thought my TV was broken because of what felt like five minutes of black screen with nothing but music playing.

Richard Palmer

So, I've read the book this is based on, and to say it's not for the faint of heart is an understatement. If this movie confused or disgusted, you trust me you ain't seen nothing yet. This book was one of the hardest things I've ever read, and I'm a huge horror hound. I had to put this book down for a day or two while reading it. All that to say Patrick is one of the best examples of an unreliable narrator. The author of the book has gone on record to say even he doesn't know how much of what Patrick did or said actually happened. You were hitting all around the main theme of these yuppie dochebag's are so interchangeable with each other that they don't even know who each other are. In the end we aren't meant to know what did or didn't happen. Patrick doesn't even know himself. Now there is a verry terrible sequel to this that has nothing to do with the original. The story is completely unrelated except for some quick reshoots they did to shoehorn in Patrick's name his character dies off screen either right as or before the movie starts. Hopefully that helps make it a little clearer. I personally would love the opportunity to start an after-show podcast with you and Carly, you could call it Extra butter. It would be a fun way to discuss what you've been watching. With all that said thank you so much for making this channel. I'm a huge cinephile, and your channel has given back to me the joy of watching some of the movies I've loved for so long again for what seems like the first time. Keep up the amazing work.

Richard Palmer

Dumb. Why did people want Cassie to watch this? What are you supposed to get out of this movie? I don't care about the mind of a psycho. How is this on a list of the top movies you have to watch?

Rick Williams

“I have a lunch meeting with Cliff Huxtable at the Four Seasons” is maybe the most underrated line of this movie 🎥 🍿

Jason Dolan

Dude, the whole movie "American Psycho" is the hardcore. I'm not talking about the specific porno on his TV. I'm talking about the hardcore violence and sexual activity in the movie WE are watching lol

Scott Macaulay

It's crazy, yes? I loved your talk at the end, I wish you had gone on longer about the insanity and the profundity of it all or do I mean obtuseness, I mean how... hard it is to pull meaning out of... this! Some funny lines or ideas, "Sorry I can't because I have to go return some rented video tapes..." hahaha - I'm sure that was intended to be funny, yes? But why is it even funny, do we know that renting videos were a thing? That has to be about watching movies... a thing that we still do today. Maybe in that time it was still new and had just became "extremely convenient" to have your movies to go... that you can take home with you. It's not even elitist, anyone can rent a video. Regarding Wall Street, was this at the time of or before Netflix? Because Netflix killed all of rented video tapes. So much so that the stock became top 5 on the planet which is massive, yes no maybe? (Ronald Reagan was an actor. Is it all about movies blurring with reality?) I'm not even sure they're only satirizing things of the time, I think there should be some universal things in it that we recognize even today. The cop cars blowing up is a movie thing though. But he also was taking drugs, his name on a prescription. And he kept saying "Just say no!" Well, he said it twice. And we saw in the end, it was Ronald Reagan era. And the slogan was "Just say no" back then. Cassie said they were all the same those guys... and their attention to minutiae... and obsessions about... materialism? Like the suits, the business cards... and outward appearances of being seen or going to a trendy restaurant. So trendy that the guy on the phone just laughs at him for asking for a reservation... for that same night. And his skin care routine... and he literally was pulling off a mask and saying he doesn't exist. His face is blurred out on two occasions through glass... as if anonymous... or meaning that he doesn't exist or that he's faceless. But what seems like a big contradictory is when he talks about social injustice or something like that and yet he's the craziest one in the whole bunch of them. He seems the most sincere about that. Is he serious?, he seems to be. And we know that's crazy... the craziest thing, and what does that mean? The funny thing is if you try to explain this movie to someone and the events in it, and you try to describe how the music is used and the dialogue... you might have to stifle a laugh... and that the person you're talking to might think you're the one crazy... lol... And as you describe... and then he did this - and you can't help but laugh at what you just said... That's why I like it.

Mannygogou

Thank you. I've been the only one I've seen request it on here. I do think it's worth seeing. Similar dark/comedic vibes with some really interesting scenes. Especially the reverse/frame segments and the end scene in the snow.

Chris Thom

There’s a movie called THE RULES OF ATTRACTION where James Van Der Beek plays Patrick Bateman’s brother so it’s sort of a sequel in the Bret Easton Ellis universe at least. It is also directed by the co-writer of PULP FICTION.

Jason Dolan

I know a lot of people have a tons of overly complex theories about what's happening in this movie, and I haven't really cared much about them, especially the one about the woman and his lawyer being in on his murders and them covering them up. To me, he's just nuts. And we're all kinda nuts..... not to that scale or degree at all. Of course the movie showcases the emptiness in the lives of these kinds of people, and I feel like Patrick's rage and hate is due to their authentic douchiness and vapid lifestyle being "better" than his soulless, fake imitation of them. He is the way he is in this movie to be like them, to fit in. To be that "idea". He has no personality which came naturally from his own mind. I take most stories at face value unless otherwise contradicted by characters explanations and believe that usually the simplest explanation is the most likely in almost all things. To me Patrick hates the world, so he imagines killing most of it. He has horrid fantasies about killing all these people and draws them. In reality, he's killed no one, and has just imagined all these scenarios in his head. After his final murderous rampage, his imagination gets too ridiculous for even him to fully believe (looking at the gun which made the explosion, thinking (did this gun really do THAT?), but not enough to wake up from, and the next morning instead of imagining going to Paul Allen's apt he invented, he really does go to that address, but it's actual just a random, empty place being shown for sale. I feel like people read too much into the real estate agent's performance and mistake her tone of authority for government cover up or something. She just wants him to leave, because he's trespassing, and she caught him in a lie about being there because of an ad he saw. To me everything is in his last words of the movie. Patrick is a person TRAPPED in the body of someone who hates the world and wants to destroy everyone in it due to his holier than thou nature, but never actually goes through with it. He just constantly fantasizes about doing it. Him even telling us this story, the narration, is of no consequence and doesn't improve his tortured by his own sick murder fantasy existence. Telling people what he's done, and being a total psycho jerk, the closest things one could call as a cry for help, even creates no change. I think it's a metaphor for how as a society many of us feel lost and feel like we're yelling for mental help at the top of our lungs, but no help comes. No one bats an eye. No one cares enough to help a person who's gone crazy. it's just ignored. Patrick represents all us nice human beings suppressing our darkest impulses, amplified to the worst behavior. We act civil to rude people, or today's version of "civil", like a casual "F you" to a driver that cut us off or ran a stop sign, but sometimes we feel like people who've wronged us or are more impressive than us should be taken down a notch, like those impulsive things we think are safe to yell at a TV screen to a villainous killer in a movie "HE NEEDS TO DIE!" or in Patrick's case removed from this world, Patrick wanting that for the smallest, pettiest of reasons in the most gruesome ways.

YodatheHobbit

I love Amy Adams in The Fighter. Bale transformed himself into character.

Clay F

My buddies made this like 20 years ago https://youtu.be/G29d6RDSK1c?si=xaNFwIG95haoC492

Jason Dolan

That’s true I forgot about the opening. But it’s a much better film than this one. This one is just gross.

Alex Gorell

She has so much wisdom to share

jenny from montana

When voting in a poll, my No. 1 criterion is I vote for my favorite movies. Avoiding a movie that might be "cruel" to her, or whether she might experience discomfort or not enjoy the movie, or find the movie objectionable, offensive, or tasteless, are considerations but not my top considerations. While I do like to vote for movies I think she will like or at least tolerate, I more generally vote for movies that I most enjoy and that I think might give an interesting and/or engaging reaction. I like to vote for movies that might provoke her or make her think or that she feels emotion or that exposes her to subject matter she is unfamiliar. Never to simply for her to be scared or freaked out, though that can occur when she reacts to the movie, but not a goal for me when I vote. I am not her guardian and she is an intelligent adult, and if her team approved a movie to be in a poll, it's generally fair game for me. Again, my No. 1 criterion is I vote for my favorite movies. I want to see reactions to my favorite movies -- that is more important than Cassie enjoying the movie -- though her enjoying the movie can be pleasant.

Clay F

Just when you least expect it...BOOM. Peak Cassie-ism of Immense Knowledge.

Chris Thom

The face peel 😂😂😂

N M

Well the hardcore was actually playing on his tv screen, so you listened to hardcore with them

N M

"I don't know if this serial killer should do cocaine" I love Cassie 🤣🤣

jenny from montana

You de-sensitized yourself

N M

Except the opening

N M

Nah but she IS a Bonafede Whitney Houston fan. (See The Bodyguard reaction vid)

Chris Thom

While I found this movie interesting back in my 30s, I would rather have seen her reaction, for example, to "Lost in Translation" (2003) or "Thelma & Louise" (1991). When voting in a poll, my No. 1 criterion is I vote for my favorite movies. Whether she might experience discomfort or not enjoy the movie, or find the movie objectionable, offensive, or tasteless, are considerations but not my top considerations. While I do like to vote for movies I think she will like or at least tolerate, I more generally vote for movies that I think might give an interesting and/or engaging reaction. I like to vote for movies that might provoke her or make her think or that she feels emotion or that exposes her to subject matter she is unfamiliar. Never to simply for her to be scared or freaked out, though that can occur when she reacts to the movie, but not a goal for me when I vote. I don't want her to have nightmares that stick, but I am not her guardian and she is an intelligent adult, and if her team approved a movie to be in a poll, it's generally fair game for me. Again, my No. 1 criterion is I vote for my favorite movies. I want to see reactions to my favorite movies -- that is more important than Cassie enjoying the movie -- though her enjoying the movie can be pleasant.

Clay F

@Dan To your 2nd question, yes, absolutely! I used to show my sister scary stuff all the time. Last year I showed the 11 year olds that I coached horror movies during our trip to Italy😁

Shehab Dawoud

I haven’t seen ‘Salo’ but I guess it breaks some of her restrictions. AP doesn’t do that, or else it wouldn’t have been approved by her team.

Shehab Dawoud

Wow... I can't wait to watch this. I've seen at least 5 reactions to this and I still don't think I understand it. I'm not ready for an answer to be fed to me... not yet 😆 If it takes ten, twenty years I will refuse explanations!... hahaha 😅😁 muhahaha 🙃

Mannygogou

Very well, put "Salo" on a poll.

TheSingulatarian

Broadly, classifies for a war poll. The Google page of the movie gives the genre as War/Action. Wikipedia describes it as an "epic coming-of-age war film." The movie depicts the Japanese invading China = war. Then, the prisoner of war camp for foreign civilians.

Clay F

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

TheSingulatarian

Hey Cassie… you know who Huey Lewis & The News is. You must remember these. Right? ;-) “Back in Time” https://youtu.be/xNWYvHHU1U8?si=3rwLpE7FhpVYF8r1 “The Power of Love” https://youtu.be/wBl2QGAIx1s?si=lM9Sn0XognWg6zHB Also… watching this film made me think of another film that could be a Fun/Interesting Reaction… possibly even more fun than this one. Freeway (1996)… starring Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland.

Larry Darrell

Great reaction, you wouldn't have been the only one confused through this film. According to Christain Bale he used Tom Cruise as in inspiration for the Patrick Bateman character I guess in the sense of him being so intense, Good thing you didn't watch this early on in PiB, all those horror films over the years probably made this so much easier to watch.

Gray

Must ... not ...fall for the politics bait...

Mike Lemon

Protip: Cassie is watching the R-rated version as opposed to the unrated version. This means about 18 seconds are cut out. So when you get to the threeway scene, it's going to get out of sync.

Carol_White

@Edward Robson…Someone said it in another comment. They think it’s funny to see someone uncomfortable. I just don’t get it.

Dan M

Yes, being uncomfortable makes you better, smarter, and tougher…in life experiences. Not when it comes to watching a movie. And yes, being scared is fun under the right circumstances…watching a good scary movie with the lights down, riding a rollercoaster for the first time, asking someone out on a date. But to purposely want someone to watch a movie that you know will make them uncomfortable, or do anything that you know will make them uncomfortable, because you think it’s funny?! Really?!

Dan M

So, Cassie. Do you like Huey Lewis & The News? 🙂🤭

Zane From Canada

This film made me miss going to Blockbuster.

Larry Darrell

It was the free one on Amazon. 102 min runtime. I guess there’s 5 minutes of credits. Wouldn’t have thought that for this film.

Larry Darrell

Just finished watching your reaction, Cassie, and I think you did great on picking up on the main themes of the movie. It’s packed with satirical social commentary about how superficial, materialistic, and greedy everyone in this society is. The men are portrayed as misogynistic and full of male vanity, while everyone is entirely fixated on their status and how others perceive them, without genuinely caring about anyone else. Patrick openly admitted to being a murderer several times, and yet people just brushed it off like it didn’t matter. This movie can definitely be interpreted in multiple ways. One plausible reading is that everything was just in Patrick's head and that he didn’t actually commit any crimes. However, the director, Mary Harron, mentioned in an interview that the events we see did happen, and she regrets not making this clearer in the film. My take is that Patrick is unquestionably a serial killer and that he did kill Paul Allen and the others too. Just despite being so bad and careless about all of it, simply the society just doesn't care and he gets away with it. When his lawyer claims to have had lunch with Paul in London, it’s likely just another instance of mistaken identity, very much like how people - even his lawyer - keep confusing Patrick with someone else. The creepy performance of Bale is truly amazing and it's a shame he only received some lesser known awards and nominations for it. There are a couple of scenes where he starts sweating mid-take, and he was able to actually do that on set multiple times for every take. Also, he remained so much in character that throughout the entire production he used an American accent. Then when on the final wrap party he started to speak with his native accent, everyone from the cast was amazed he wasn't American. I watched this movie once a long time ago, maybe around 20 years back, and didn’t enjoy it much at the time. Even though it doesn’t actually depict a lot of violence, I interpreted it much more literally on that first watch. However, I rewatched it a few years ago, and the second time around, I really caught on to the satirical and comedic elements. It’s a very dark, farcical kind of humor, but now I see it as a hilariously sharp movie beneath the surface of psychological horror. That said, it’s definitely not for everyone. I have to say, Cassie, you handled it really well!

Gábor Árki

Pierce & Pierce was a Mergers and Acquisitions firm, not a Private Equity firm, so your description of what they did is off.

N M

The business card scene is my favorite part of the movie.

N M

Do really think this is a movie that Cassie would have chosen to watch on her own time? Yes, Cassie has seen a good amount of violence and disturbing imagery in many of the movies she has watched. But Im willing to bet that she would not have chosen to watch many of those movies on her own, and watched them because they won polls like this one, and she does it for the sake of the channel. Yes, Cassie is an adult, and she can handle any movie that’s thrown her way, but why put her through the discomfort of having to watch a movie that most us here by now know she will not enjoy because it may contain content that she finds objectionable, offensive, or tasteless? I’m not saying I can tell you every movie that Cassie will like or dislike, she has certainly surprised me in the past…but did anyone here actually think she would enjoy this movie?

Dan M

Yes to these 3 movies! Bale is amazing in all of them and they are very good films. Empire of the Sun has been highly requested for a long time on her list and it's lost a few polls. I hope Cassie will watch it someday, kid/teen bale is fantastic in it.

Oisin Clissmann

@Dan Being uncomfortable makes you better, smarter and tougher. Why do you think so many successful people have had tough upbringings and lives? The second reason is that it’s just funny seeing people be scared or uncomfortable.

Shehab Dawoud

I totally agree with you, I couldn't understand why so many people voted for her to watch this movie, the only thing I could think of was these people just get enjoyment out of watching her be uncomfortable for 2 hours, I felt it was unfair to her when there were other films on the poll that she would have genuinely enjoyed watching. I get taking someone out of their comfort zone and Cassie has done that with some films she has actually liked, but why vote so much for a movie that we all know by now she isn't going to enjoy just to watch her be uncomfortable

Edward Robson

I’m not underestimating Cassie’s ability to handle any movie that she watches. And I don’t think she’ll be “traumatized” by this movie or any other movie that she watches. But why put her through the discomfort of watching a movie with material that she may find objectionable, offensive, or tasteless, and will most likely not enjoy.

Dan M

You think that is the most disturbing scene? lol

Scott Macaulay

Lawrence of Arabia always sort of brings me down. The second half is kind of depressing.

Fritz

The songs that make up the soundtrack are great. It’s really the only positive thing I can say about this movie.

Dan M

That's a bit bloody too isn't it?

Chris Thom

And so, this makes it okay to be cruel to her? Okay then.

Steve Mercier

I don’t begrudge anyone who likes this movie…to each his or her own. But why put Cassie through the discomfort of sitting through something she’s obviously not going to enjoy.

Dan M

Lawrence of Arabia will for sure cleanse your brain of this

Alex Gorell

Empire of the Sun and The Fighter have both been mentioned on here, and I'm in full agreement. But another amazing Bale film is Rescue Dawn. An inspiring true story of a POW camp during the Vietnam War. Werner Herzog directed this masterpiece as a companion to the documentary film of the same subject he made 9 years earlier.

Brett Richey

it said on the title on prime extended but i’m not sure based on runtime

Cassie

Whether intentional or just serendipity, American Psycho borrows heavily from Mario Bava's HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON (1970). If anyone really enjoys AP, take HFtH for a spin. The final film of lead and Canadian Stephen Forsyth as he quit acting after, but he was something in this movie

keoma songs

omg i knew i recognized the voice he was doing

Cassie

hahaha i lold at this

Cassie

Does feel like we're getting set up for another big buy off doesn't it.

Chris Thom

Patrick's taste in music mirrored my ex-wife's. She was a bit of a psychopath herself. She certainly embraced the Yuppie lifestyle.

TheSingulatarian

That scene with Patrick exercising with all the screaming in the background was from "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

TheSingulatarian

Well, I think all of the murders that Patrick commits while taking place in his head are metaphors for the style of unrestrained capitalism these investment banker types practice. Buying a company, loading it up with debt so that the company can no longer make a profit. The company goes bankrupt and then goes out of business and thousands of people lose their jobs like was done with Toys R Us. Or shipping millions on jobs out of the country to China or Mexico. These are shallow and vapid people that have very little if any concern for others or the destruction of the American economy. This type of behavior began with Regan and has continued unabated for fifty years. The American people are now mostly broke and in desperate circumstances. It didn't used to be this way.

TheSingulatarian

Took me a couple viewings to realize how funny this movie was and its best viewed in that way as a comedy than a movie about killing and psychosis.

Choof

Nope. What were the songs called?

Chris Thom

And maybe a statement on how the justice system deals with white collar crime. Who cares if someone's life savings or family business gets wiped out. On to the next venture. As long as those on the top aren't touched...

Chris Thom

I think the message was that high society will cover up for the evil dregs among them in order to maintain the image that they are better than everyone else. Who wants to move into or live in a high class skyscraper where a bunch of brutal murders took place. Can't have that. Just quickly clean up the mess and act like nothing happened.

Cereal And Grape Juice

I couldn't have put it better. I don't understand why people would vote to have you watch a movie like this...

Phil Stubblefield

It's definitely not the extended.

Chris Thom

Had no idea David O' Russell directed that. Hope I Heart Huckabees happens eventually.

Chris Thom

War movie possibly but yeah Spielberg poll for sure.

REDR58

Good one. Not sure if it would go on a war movie poll...but definitely a Spielberg one. Hope she gets to that eventually.

Chris Thom

My question also. Quickly checked the end of the video. Credits we’re rolling at 1:37. I’m guessing it’s the theatrical?? Uncut version is 1:42.

Larry Darrell

She's 35. Not exactly a child.

Chris Thom

Cassie if you would like to see Christian Bale in something quite different, I highly recommend “Empire of the Sun” (1987) directed by Steven Spielberg. It is not happy film, by any means, but it is a very good one.

REDR58

You could be right because if I remember correctly the only reference to the original is as you’ve said the scene at the beginning. There’s also lots of voice over narrative bits and I think they also refer to the original but obviously these could have be recorded after. But it does have a 90s slasher vibe which is another reason I quite like it.

Dean Holt

Kinda feels like watching hardcore scenes with my sister or daughter. Just icky. I wouldn't have wished this one on you.

Scott Macaulay

Oh, give it a rest. She's an adult woman who has seen a good deal of violent imagery in the films she's watched so far, and has somehow managed to survive the experience.

Henry Graham

Not me! lol

Scott Macaulay

Bret Easton Ellis's source novel plunges you deep into Patrick Bateman's psychosis and is a very tough read. I think one of the most important things about this film is that it was adapted and directed by two women, who smartly find a more objective and satirical perspective on this material. (The project was almost hijacked by Oliver Stone at one point. I like Stone, but that would have been a disaster.) The film brilliantly plays up the pitch-black humour of the material and the ambiguity of how much of this is Bateman's own fevered imagination, both aspects that are flawlessly expressed by Bale's astounding high-wire act of a lead performance. I think it's a superb satire on the cynical emptiness of 80s corporate culture as well as being a sharp character study of an essentially hollow character.

Henry Graham

Yeah I agree so many people here seem to keep underestimating Cassie.

Jake McNulty

The fighter is easily one of the 25 best movies made since the turn of the century. Me and Clarence bicker- but on this I agree 1000%- The Fighter needs to be on your pick radar, it could be argued that it is the best performance bale adams and whalberg hhave ever done and they did it together and they left some oscars in their wake...its very high on my all-time list...ask around but it is a true story David o Russell He did silver linnings playbook, american hustle, amsterdam.... And the Fighter...I too recommend you inquire....it will play well for u and carly cuz it is a TRUE STORY...

Sean Kay

I have nothing but praise for Christian Bale’s performance in this movie, he was in a word: PHENOMENAL; that aside, I was stunned beyond belief when this won the poll for you to watch 😳

JL_83

I think you'll like this video though, if you haven't already seen it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWc8V-iKJ7s

Shehab Dawoud

Good reaction. That wasn't so bad, even had a few laughs in there. Hopefully now the "she can't handle it/it'll traumatize her" people will shut the F up once and for all. But I doubt it.

Shehab Dawoud

I think I read somewhere that this "sequel" was actually filmed before American Psycho. But it was so bad they just shelved it. Then someone had the brilliant idea of turning it into a sequel of American Psycho by adding a new title and some extra scene at the beginning.

Gábor Árki

Why did people vote for Cassie to watch this? This movie is not for everyone. I happen to love this movie; but, subjecting someone to it simply because 'you like it' or 'want to see her reaction' seems kind of cruel to me. I would think by now we've come to appreciate who Cassie is--at least, so far as she presents herself in her reactions--and what she tends to enjoy. This is not it. Anyway...I didn't vote for this, but still feel I should apologize for some reason. Sorry, Cassie.

Steve Mercier

Just sayin’… I would have voted for True Grit (1969), which is not my favorite John Wayne film, instead of this one, IF you had seen some earlier John Wayne westerns first, such as… Stagecoach (1939) Red River (1948) The Searchers (1956) Rio Bravo (1959) also Just Sayin’… If anyone took my comment on Risky Business as a dirty comment… that was on you 🫵. It’s all good though. American Psycho, not one of my favorites, haven’t seen it in a long, long time, gonna check and see now how Cassie survived it.

Larry Darrell

Did you ever see the parody that Huey and Weird Al did of THAT scene from this movie?

Stick Figure Studios

Cassie. Before your affection for Christian Bale evaporates completely, schedule a reaction to The Fighter (2010). It's a great story, an entertaining sports movie to boot, Amy Adams and Mark Wahlberg are really good, and Bale is sensational. You can trust me. I recommended Officer and a Gentleman. 😬

Clarence Newman

Ugh…I just don’t get it. Sorry you had to watch this movie, Cassie. As much as I like Christian Bale as an actor, and as much as his performance in this movie is jaw dropping, I really couldn’t enjoy it because of how the violence, sex, and women are portrayed. On to better things with Lawrence of Arabia.

Dan M

SAME. That band was so fun. And I really don't think Huey is a psychopath

Chris Thom

Definitely the right title for that video essay

Dan

I think empty suits of wall street is a valid point especially in reference to paul allen. The fact that everyone is so similar in how they act and so vacuous and empty that patrick literally killed some random broker cause they all act the same. Also yes nobody cares, everyone is so self absorbed in their own world that they could care less that a serial killer is walking around. I think you got it.

Night King01

For the record, I've always been a big fan of Huey Lewis and the News since I was a kid... particularly "Hip to Be Square."

Stick Figure Studios

Frankly I think Brett Easton Ellis makes statements about cocaine addiction as well. Just my impression. Addiction wasn't exactly the prime focus in the Less Than Zero book, but I think the director was apt to put the focus there in the movie.

Chris Thom

"Is this the d*ckweed?" The mouth on Cassie! I love it!

Cereal And Grape Juice

Eyyy you got through it! Respect. Yes this is a weird one. All Brett Easton Ellis movies are. Most of them are a kind of statement on apathy, entitlement, privilege, vacuousness, toxic conformity, greed, morality etc. Would assume you're not in the mood to see another right away, but Rules of Attraction and Less Than Zero are very good. Less Than Zero especially...awesome performance by Robert Downey Jr. Proud of you for going through with this. But you know you can always turn a movie off if it's too 'ick' for you.

Chris Thom

I have absolutely no clue why anyone, ever, would vote for her to watch this. I can't help but think the make up of her patrons has changed since the days when we'd all vote for the movie we felt Cassie would enjoy the most.

Art of Free Speech

I’ve always thought this was an ok movie nothing special and just a touch overrated tbh. But had they not gotten Bale to play the lead this could have easily been a terrible film. Also might be on my own with this one but I really liked the sequel with Mila Kunis, yes its not really got anything to do with the original but I just found it funny in how she goes about killing people. I guess it’s just one of those movies I know is bad but in a entertaining and good way. Bit like Maximum Overdrive and Street Fighter 😂😂

Dean Holt

I have no clue why anyone would vote for her to watch that.

Art of Free Speech

This is a challenging movie for a lot of people and plenty of people can explain it better than I could, but I think movies like these are important for growth and exposure. I'm glad you plan on reading essays about this because it's worth spending time distilling the concepts and thematic criticisms of our modern culture. But yeah, you caught on to some of the main elements, that he's a psycho but everyone else is, too. He's going crazy in a society where he hates everyone because they're so shallow in their pursuit of status that they're like dead people walking already. They can discern differences in details in business cards but mistake whole people on a constant basis. There's less humanity in them than there is in him. And he's an American psycho because he blends in with the Americans he's emulating, because we've lost our humanity. And he's not wrong.

Dan

I’m surprised this movie won the poll. It didn’t get the slander like Bad Santa, when it was on the Christmas poll lol.

Carlos Molina

Unfortunately more patreons than any other movie in a poll.

David Freese

And this is your periodic reminder to watch the epic LAWRENCE OF ARABIA on the big screen in your cellar theater space.

Stick Figure Studios

I'm sorry you had to watch this.

Caomhan84

I thought the movie was very straightforward: he had to go return some videotapes.

Christopher B.

Cassie, watching this 10 minute video essay may help to shed some light on your main question: https://youtu.be/b3TT8Has8BE Fun fact, Bale based his performance on imitating Tom Cruise after seeing some interviews with him. Once you realize, it's actually very noticeable.

Gábor Árki

Extended or regular Extended is free on prime.

TheSingulatarian

Good Morning Cassie! You should consider watching 1995’s Dolores Claiborne. It’s a Stephen King Adaptation. It’s his favorite film adaptation. He wrote the book of the same name with Kathy Bates in mind after seeing her performance in Misery. Kathy Bates has been on record saying that this is her favorite performance and it’s her best, in my opinion. It’s a masterclass in storytelling. True Stephen King horror with no supernatural elements. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Jared Stark

We finna eat good

Shehab Dawoud

Did Cassie hurt you guys? Who voted for this 😂
