[YT Edit] Superman Returns (2006)

Comments

a max original event i invtation you'vve been waiting for has arrived daniel radcliffe rupert grint emma watson the 20 year annivsesary celebration for thw first time ever the legendary cast retur=rns to where the magic started winner movie

David

we talk about Laurel and Hardy way out west make Cassie's can't stop Laughing some time's make people laugh that good thing's Make them Laughing laurel and hardy silly do to make have fun Enjoy first time watching funniest comedy called make Cassie's gry of Laughter mean's Tears OF lAUGHTER IT IS LONG MOVIE

David

I think Brandon Routh did a decent job as well and as i've only seen clips of his RETURN on Crisis on infinite Earths , i'll hold judgement on that but having read the comics and as i 've heard the series is worth a watch i look forward to it .

Harvey Lee

I have watched You Me and The Movies and the only difference I see is more tv shows and more horror. Thats 2 things Cassie is very limited on most of the time because of preference. But look at her lists for 4 years and there is more variety than any other reactor because she doesn't watch alot of series ( yes there are exceptions) so there are tons of different types of movies that never are shown in other places. Still don't know why you don't think there is variety or is it because you don't like Trek ?

David Freese

That's what Tim Burton was planning in the 90's. Supposedly he got pretty far in the process before it got cancelled. There's some cool concept art from the early stages online.

Chris Thom

I haven't seen "Superman III" since my childhood (so maybe about 40 years now), and even back then I was fairly indifferent with it. It *might* have been more watchable if they'd gone ahead with Richard Donner's initial plan to have Brainiac as its main villain. I'm not sure if I ever saw the fourth movie.

Byrd N. Hand

That would be an 'ick' movie for Cassie for sure.

Chris Thom

Little tidbit.....Lex's villain always holding the video camera: Ian Roberts, former football (rugby league) player and first openly gay whilst playing.....very well known in Oz

Shane Drum

I don’t mind this version, clearly they thought that their might be more than one Brandon Routh movie and left it open ended. He did eventually ‘return’ (return, return?) in the TV series world of DC which I never really watched, I’m not sure where they were aired in the UK. Nice article here about Brandon Routh being Superman again https://www.cbr.com/brandon-routh-crisis-on-infinite-earths-healed-superman-returns-wound/

Ria Grix

I dissent. I thought III was fun, and worth a watch to get to know Lana Lang at the very least. IV - yes, garbage. Even Gene Hackman couldn't save it.

bgb1975 (Brian)

Agreed. Anything is better than III or IV. My neighbors' garage sale that's going on right now is better than III or IV. 😂

Vlad D

I really would love for Cassie to dig in to the Snyder films. Rhey are Soooo different

Stan the Man

@Joe- "but much lower views" - Like I have said before, Cassie gets by on a better personality (for reacting).

Mike Lemon

I prefer to avoid sequels as a general rule, with exceptions. The 5 Rocky movies and the 10 or so X-Men movies were each a little bit of a tough stretch, but I did enjoy the 40 episodes of TNG.

Clay F

@Mike, the other channels you mentioned indeed have good variety...but much lower views than Cassie would be happy with at all. Cassie has good variety IMO. She returns to favorite actors and likes theme polls. The new monthly Popcorn requests polls and PaF will definitely be adding more variety. These are good things.

Joe

IDK and I don’t think that it even matters. Because, Superman definitely knew that they had Been Together. And it totally reinforces that ol' male stereotype that he only wanted One Thing, and as soon as he got it,...he erased her memory and skipped out of the Galaxy.

Uncle Phoenix

@David- You, Me, and the Movies; Dawn Marie; Octokrool - all have much better variety.

Mike Lemon

He didn't know and pretty sure she wasn't sure either till the piano

David Freese

I agree but its not slightly. Its completely a 180

David Freese

Alot of Brainac if rumors are true

David Freese

I’m not a fan of “Superman Returns.” I don’t hate it, either. To me, it’s just meh. But it’s definitely better than Superman 3 or 4, which are as bad as advertised. Superman 4 might be worthy of a “so bad it’s good” type of reaction, but that’s not Cassie’s niche. There are literally thousands of good movies that Cassie hasn’t seen. I’d far rather she spent time (and valuable reaction slots) reacting to those.

Just Plain Bob

You keep complaining about lack of variety on this channel. Its not true but I have a challenge for you. Check other reaction channels and see if you can find anything else that has Cassies variety and then report back. Just because you don't like a genre or a trilogy doesn't mean there is not variety on PiB

David Freese

Personally glad she skipped them. But they're alright if you truly loved the other ones, but needed even more cheese. Pretty sure four is the one where they hired a Chippendales dancer to play the villain, and he'd never been in a movie before. Or since. They have the most ridiculous fight scene on the moon you could possibly imagine. All good fun for kids. But personally would prefer PIB get to some better movies first.

Chris Thom

1- Yes. Three and 4 are the type of movie you have on in the background, if nothing else is on, while you are doing your weekend cleaning. 2- The "slots" aren't just for "good" movies, but no. They should be skipped on channel. Plus, for me, it's too many from one franchise for the limited slots. Viva variety!

Mike Lemon

1. This movie is better than Superman III and Superman IV, right? (I haven't watched Superman III or Superman IV.) 2. Are Superman III or Superman IV good enough for a coveted reaction slot?

Clay F

I forgot about this movie

Mr Mute_Up

Superman Returns is a movie I just never re-visited, it didn't make any impact on me. I did like Man of Steel much more.

Joe

Superman Returns was ok, but it was a mistake to carry on from superman 2 in my opinion. That was Christopher reeves era, and he was great. Man of Steel for me was a much better superman for the modern era. Henry Caville was amazing.

Kevin O'Donnell

It definitely doesn’t FEEL like a Superman move. Even Jimmy Olsen was like, “Dude, what the heck?”

Uncle Phoenix

I definitely get the sense that it's difficult to bring a movie together to feel like a united whole. Always impressed by movies that can pull that off. I think whoever is in charge of continuity, and getting the details and costumes and locations, character growth, hair and whatnot right is super important.

Chris Thom

Thanks so much Cassie!

Dave Wheeler

This movie was suppose to be a non-reboot reencarnación of a well known top tier character without retelling the origin story. Also a base block to a second movie with lots of "action" and the posibility to merge and or cross characters in other IPs, they spend a lot of efort in nostalgia, trivia and dialog form past movies respectig the past but now biger with better effects. But they couldn't close the circle on the relationship story part because of the memory errase, they couldn't match the successful darker Dark knight Batman to the colorful (sepia?) Superman, they didn't want to "end" Luthor in case they wanted to use it again in future movies, the kid could not be more prominent becaus the might need to change actor in a future movie, couldn't kiss the girl, couldn't kill the bad guy, had no one to fight, no one was hurt, there where no consequences, no police, military or goberment intervine... To meany objectives to much restrictions, good acting and action scenes, GREATE music. Funny Pitch meeting https://youtu.be/qQwAMdcA2Lo

Arturo

I agree that Superman III is worth the watch. Cassie would particularly enjoy getting to know Lana Lang.

bgb1975 (Brian)

I liked this one better than Man of Steel. Donner Cut! Donner Cut! Donner Cut!

bgb1975 (Brian)

I thought Eisenberg was the worst choice for Lex Luther, he seemed more like Lex's spoiled child than Lex Himself.

McShades

Superman Returns got criticized for the lack of action back in the day. But I will say after watching it again after 15+ years, I actually like it more now than when it originally released. It would have been interesting to see where they would have gone with the story if sequels were made.

McShades

This movie had it’s moments. Obviously the plane scene was peak Superman in action. The modern film tech mixed with the nods to and narrative continuity (sort of?) with I and II is nice. But the story is lacking in some indefinable way. Now…if you want a story…oh boy…Superman III please and thank you. That movie teaches us how you modify some kryptonite. Bizarre to see the least. It now seems all the more crazy against I, II and Returns, but it’s an experience for sure. And if you go that crazy, you might as well have a laugh with IV.

Mark Daniels

Eisenberg was good as a crazy rich tech geek kind of character. Seemed appropriate for the times.

Chris Thom

That is why in the 50's and 60's they invented a rainbow of kyptonite. Each affecting Superman differently. I collect mostly Marvel Comics from the 60's. I have bought several golden age comics and have one Action comics starring Superman from the war years just because Superman is a classic character.

William Brownlee

Not only abandoning his son, but not telling Lois that he was gonna leave for years or offering her any explanation whatsoever. Then he comes back and begins stalking her. Any other guy that gets his girlfriend pregnant, disappears for years without explanation, then comes back and follows her around and watches her in her home without her knowledge or consent would be seen for what he is - a creep that any sensible person wouldn’t want in their life.

Just Plain Bob

I agree 100% about Superman being overpowered. It’s hard to create any sense of peril for a character that is stronger and faster than any other superhero, is virtually invulnerable, can fly, shoot heat rays out of his eyes, blow super cold breath, see thru anything but lead, etc. I read a lot of comics growing up, but not many Superman comics for that very reason. I do remember that, at one point, he blew out a star like a kid blowing out the candles on his birthday cake. Hard to emphasize with a character with God like abilities.

Just Plain Bob

I always thought this version was enjoyable, but not spectacular. I think the whole plot with the real estate thing and creating more land was a little derivative of the first film. I liked the Henry Cavill film. I think some people didn’t like it because it was too different. I liked it because they actually did something new. And I really like the guy who played Lex Luther in Batman versus Superman. I think some people didn’t like him because he was too different. I liked him because he was a new take on the character and I thought an interesting compelling character kind of believably crazy

Thomas Thompson

For me Routh just didn't have the charisma to pull it off. Cassie will like the Cavill Superman much more.

Joe

I love this movie. I know a lot of people were disappointed that Clark didn't end up with Lois, but hey tried being together in Superman II and it didn't work. I like that this film deals more with him just feeling like an outcast. He returns to Krypton desperate to find someone like him, and in the end he finds out he has a son. He's no longer alone in the world and that's enough for him. That being said, I am sure the relationship with Lois would've been addressed had Routh gotten the chance to make more sequels.

James Billings

Also. One of the best Superman scenes ever filmed is the opening plane

Go0se

I'm gonna give Superman the benefit of the doubt, I think he has to focus to use x-ray vision and super hearing and he just didn't focus on Lois's internals after their night together.

Brian Nam

"Slightly" 😆

Brian Nam

I thought it made sense for Lex's motivation from the 78 film. He was essentially trying a real estate scam, this time by creating his own island.

Brian Nam

This movie has a truckload of cool trivia...Here's a sample. Brandon Routh and Christopher Reeve were both 26 when they filmed as Superman. The director had planned on a cameo for Christopher Reeve. The old dying woman is Noel Neill. She played Lois Lane in Superman the late 40s and early 1950s and played Lois's mother in the 78 Superman. The bartender that serves Jimmy and Clark was Jimmy Olsen in the 1952 Superman movie. The truck which Martha Kent drove was the same truck used for the Superman 78. The production found the truck, and rented it again. There is a framed photograph of Glenn Ford (Jonathan Kent from the 1978 film) on the piano during the reunion scene at the Kent farm.

Brian Nam

I find the "it has good/great parts" to be most movies. There are only a relative few I will re-watch the whole way through, most I'll only re-watch their "good scenes".

Mike Lemon

There's some really great parts to it. But yeah it wasn't particularly memorable for some reason.

Chris Thom

There are a few good moments in the movie and Routh makes a pretty good Superman, but it has a lot of problems as a story.

REDR58

If you do continue with Superman content please go on to man of steel. Love to see how you react to Henry Cavill

Luke Alexander

If she wants to get really meta, she should watch "Above Suspicion". Christopher Reeve plays, in the irony of ironies, a paraplegic cop. Why is that ironic, you ask? Because six days after it aired on TV, Reeve suffered the horseback-riding accident that paralyzed him.

Tim Heron

I don't know anyone who loves this Superman movie - I know some who don't hate it and some people who do, but that's about it. The Snyder Superman movies (Henry Cavill) are much, MUCH better than most people credit them for, and I think you'll really enjoy those. The first Wonder Woman film is the best of the bunch IMO and Aquaman (the first one) has some good moments as well.

Story Archer

Agreed, that was one of my main gripes was the plan.

Erik Locquiao

Smallville was great!, I didn't know you watched that already.

Steve

I agree the evil plan just didn't make much sense. The problem Superman always has is being over powered. Hard to have a villian that can stand up to him. And having some Galaxy destroying villian just takes away from any connection to normal people. I think they have done that in the MCU. I LOVE Captain America, but in the MCU he is too powerful. A super soldier maybe as powerful as 5 or 6 men. Not almost able to take on Thor. Did not like Superman Vs Batman. Hope the new version is good. You always have hope.

William Brownlee

You should watch Brightburn, a SLIGHTLY different take on the Superman story. It will definitely make you see Superman in a different light. Recommended if for no other reason, for the "what if" factor.

Edwin

The sequel to Superman Returns is Crisis on Infinite Earths on TV, similar to the multiverse in Marvel. The CW show also has Tom Welling as Smallvile's Clark, Grant Gustin as Flash, Stephen Amell as Green Arrow and Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. Brandon Routh has a new Superman suit inspired by the Kingdom Come comic, and it is implied that Superman and Lois got together eventually as Superman narrates that Lois was one of those killed by the Joker. Check out this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdhXexPf4no

Gerard Espiritu

Gene Hackman was almost comedic relief in some of those.

Chris Thom

The rest of the Justice League was introduced in the Batman/Superman movie, which I think can be considered a Superman movie. She should definitely watch that. And maybe Wonder Woman and Aquaman for kicks.

Chris Thom

I think you mean Kate Bosworth if referring to this movie (I also get those two mixed up every time lol). Posey is pretty funny in those Christopher Guest movies.

Chris Thom

Eva Marie Saint, who plays his mother, is going to be 101 this year. She was Carey Grants love interest in North By Northwest.

Robert James

Fun fact, Cassie...Martha Kent is played by Eva Marie Saint...she was the young lady opposite Cary Grant in North by Northwest. And five years before, in her first movie, one most PIB members would like you to react to, "On The Waterfront"...opposite a very young Marlon Brando. Brando was in the Christopher Reeves Superman and The Godfather. Eva is still alive and 100, she'll be 101, this July 4.

John Liebling

My main issue with this is that Luthor's big evil plan is so stupid. Yes he's created more land, but it's a giant desolate rock that you can't really do anything with. At least in the 1978 Superman Luthor was actually going to be able to do something with all that land in Eastern California (like establishing the town of Otisberg).

Stranger2Reality

cant watch the cavill ones without kind of doing most of the DCEU (snyders)

Bryan Hathaway

Parker Posey is awesome. If you're a fan of hers, check out Party Girl. She was also great in Dazed and Confused. She was even good in Blade Trinity, even if that movie isn't.

Stranger2Reality

I still think that it was a bad idea to make Superman a deadbeat dad. Because he must have know that she was pregnant before he abandoned his unborn son, to look for other khryptonians.

Uncle Phoenix

Well for sure he wrote those lines. But PS doing the narration in that movie was genius, with rants like this one and the one about the Apache helicopter 😂

Stranger2Reality

Disagree. Parker Posey and Blake Lively can both go away.

Uncle Phoenix

I don’t recall you doing a documentary on the channel but how about Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story? It is such an inspiring look at his life.

Jay

I still mostly hear Seth McFarlane there. lol

Chris Thom

Always enjoy seeing Parker Posey show up in a movie. She's pretty good. She was super fun in Scream 3 too.

Chris Thom

I want to commend Cassie on having skipped Superman III & IV, as they're both garbage. Also, since this was inevitable, let's all hear what Patrick Stewart had to say about this movie: https://youtu.be/ZIPqV4Z0Vu8 Truly great voiceover work from Sir Patrick there in the movie Ted.

Stranger2Reality

Hoping "Man of Steel" and the following Snyderverse series comes next ....

Bill Maurer

Brandon Roth in 'Superman Returns: Battle of the Superbulge'. 😀

Celeste McAllister

I remember being so hyped for this when it first came out. It got a lot of hate but I still enjoyed it

Erik Locquiao

Glad Cassie watched this! One of my favorites. I love Gene Hackman, but I think Kevin Spacey played an even more menacing Lex Luthor.
