This was our original pick a flicks winners (fastecp) second choice after I had seen his first Gone Girl! Thank you for this!
Oooohhh Mel G and Julia Robert’s? Who knew?! I have been craving a movie like this! It was unexpected and twisty and I loved how it all came together! ps: Patrick Stewart? How could you!

Not many scenes in a movie hit me harder than when he confesses he loves her and she tells him, "No, you don't." Partly Gibson's acting and partly just, yeah, I think that'd be hard for any guy to hear when he tells a woman he loves her.

The theatre he went into was showing 'Ladyhawke', starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfieffer and Matthew Broderick, and directed by Richard Donner.

The better theory (and the truth) is that Oswald was shooting at Governor Connally and hit Kennedy. Qswald threatened to kill Connally several times because as Secretary of the Navy, he refused to rescind his dishonorable discharge after Qswald defected and then returned to the US. The Warren committee was not going to let the story be Kennedy stopped a bullet, he had to have been struck down in his prime. Qswald had a better shot at Kennedy, but a no shot on Connally while on N Houston before the turn to Elm St, the only clear shot on Connally was when he fired, but he hit Kennedy.

He grew up with a ton of religious paranoia in his home with his father. His behavior makes a lot more sense when you realize how he was brought up. That said, his blaming jews for all the foibles and excess of human nature is just too easy, and pretty dumb. There's 'evil' and self centeredness in every society in the world.

I do think Catcher in the Rye is a classic book. A whiney, depressive one...but a classic. It's a source of comfort for a lot of people, but I can see how it could be misconstrued and taken too seriously. But also important to remember Holden was very much an adolescent who would grow into himself in time.

MkUltra ended over a half-century ago in 1973 and was fully exposed.
Not many conspiracy theories have a reality to them.
The Catcher In the Rye association is nothing of a conspiracy but simply facts. "The Catcher in the Rye" has been linked to the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman, who identified strongly with the novel's protagonist, Holden Caulfield, and was found with a copy of the book when arrested; this connection has also been made with other assassination attempts (e.g., Reagan) and some serial killers, as the book is seen as potentially influencing individuals with feelings of alienation and disillusionment. John Hinckley Jr. (who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan), was found to have been reading "The Catcher in the Rye".

Project MKUltra, also called the CIA mind control program, is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects that were designed and undertaken by the United States. Catcher In the Rye has been linked to the John Lennon Murder and assassination attempts, as well as serial killers. Some conspiracies have a reality to them. Strange indeed. Great reaction.

“Magic bullet”, the deathbed confession, and the fact no marksman has ever been able to repeat Oswald’s actions from the Book depository are what trouble me about the official version, but you are correct…there are some truly bizarre theories out there that cannot be disproven.

Why don’t they make films like this anymore?
Short answer… The major Hollywood studios are afraid to risk spending money on film ideas that are unproven. A Bestselling Book is not enough to guarantee a movie deal these days, like it has been since the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, up to the 90s and early aughts.
Since the 2000s, and The Matrix… CGI, superhero films, Marvel Universe, Fast and Furious Universe, Hunger Games, Star Wars, Star Trek, John Wick, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, more superhero films, more CGI. They all made a TON of money. So studios made these kinds of films priorities.
Hollywood also figured out, that people love Pop Culture. The films, books, comics and established properties from the 70s, 80s and 90s that everyone grew up watching and that nerd culture obsesses over and holds dear… became the main place they go to for an idea for film or show. They figure if they make a film about something that everyone already likes, then people will see it no matter what. This is why for the past 10 to 15 years, the majority of what comes out of Hollywood has been either Sequels, Remakes, Reboots, or something that already has an established fan base.
(This isn’t true anymore though. People have gotten wise to the inferior quality, compared to the original material, and thus Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel/DC Films, Doctor Who and Indiana Jones are no longer money printing properties.)
When Covid happened, the legs were kicked out from under Hollywood and it has still never fully gotten back up. In the past 5 years, Hollywood still has not seen a year as great as 2019 at the Box Office. People aren’t going to the theaters like they used to. They are too afraid to take any risks on a film like The Fugitive. A film that solely relies on the actors to keep suspense for over 2 hours, with no flashy CGI or huge explosions (except one), or anything established the audience would know. The Fugitive was mainly sold to the studios and audience, on Harrison Ford’s star power too. That’s something else that doesn’t work anymore. The luster of the Hollywood Star has finally worn off. I believe social media played a huge part in that.
Anyhoo, back on topic… The Fugitive was made with an announced budget of $44 Million. Adjusted for inflation, that’s more than $97 Million. No way they would spend almost a hundred million on a film like this now. $50 Million or less, or it would be a TV show. Look at others from that great year of 1993…
The Firm - $42 Million
In the Line of Fire - $40 Million
The Pelican Brief - $45 Million
Hell, Jurassic Park was $63 Million. Crazy!!

Good Lord, that’s Forty-Four! it’s times like these that I start to wonder if I’ve crossed over into a parody timeline at some point. I mean, c’mon… Gladiator 2 ;-)
By the way… Films with Asterisk(*), I do actually have high hopes for, as well as these other…
Upcoming Original film ideas coming in 2025 that have potential to harken back to the olden days…
Alto Knights… directed by Barry Levinson, written by Nicholas Pileggi, starring Robert De Niro
Flight Risk… directed by Mel Gibson.
A Working Man… written by Sylvester Stallone, starring Jason Statham.
F1… directed by Joseph Kosinski, starring Brad Pitt.
Back in Action… the return of Cameron Diaz.
Mickey 17… written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, based on a Novel.
Death of a Unicorn… starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, looks like an interesting original idea.
Love Hurts… starring Ke Huy Quan. I like the idea of supporting him in his comeback. Looks like a Fun Movie.
Dear Hollywood… We’re coming up on the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of your first Golden Age. I know things have been tough and you may have been led astray in this new millennia. I know things look very dark now still. But you were great once and you will be great again. I like to think in my lifetime, I will see the New Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s not too late to turn things around.
In 2025, think of yourself as The Phoenix, and rise up anew. Rise Up and be Born Again. :-)
PS: I just realized this was NOT the short answer. ;-)

That is a popular conspiracy theory. The consensus as supported by the evidence, including the Zapruder film, is that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman who shot JFK from the Texas School Book Depository building. What is nice about a conspiracy theory is you don't need evidence.

Cassie - Julia Roberts boss, Mr. Wilson, was actor Steve Kahan. He was Riggs and Murtaugh's captain in the lethal Weapons series. He was Richard Donner's cousin and showed up in most of his films (he was a cop chasing Otis in Superman, he was a card dealer for the poker tournament in Maverick)

A big +1 for Bridge of Spies (2015).
I watched Spy Games (2001) a few times back in the day, and liked it. Two good actors in Redford and Pitt. I liked the story -- me even becoming absorbed. However, on a recent rewatch, didn't do as much for me, but I would enjoy seeing her reaction.

Probably true. Back then if a movie star was in a movie you could pretty much guarantee there was a level of thought and consideration and budget that went into the movie. Not that the studio system was ever perfect. But yeah I remember barely caring what their movie was about. You just knew it would be a certain level of quality.

I was interesting that you said "These people don't really play these roles. Mel Gibson, Patrick Stewart, Julia Roberts." Back in the day, we had MOVIE STARS. And they played all different roles, but it did not matter, because just THEM in a movie, was enough to go to the theater. We knew that if these MOVIE STARS were gonna be in a movie, it was gonna be great. Some people thought that Tom Cruise might have been the last remaining MOVIE STAR because of Top Gun:Maverick, but the flop of the last Mission Impossible movie proved that he is not a MOVIE STAR. Harrison Ford could not bring people to the last Indiana Jones movie. All signs now point to the fact that the "Movie Star" is dead.

Awesome Reaction! They don’t make films like this anymore, so it feels like a special treat when you see them again. Films like this are so much fun to see people watch for the first time as well. When I see someone new, love it, it gives me hope that maybe one day we’ll get back to this kind of Fun, Great Storytelling, Original… and Fun movies coming out of Hollywood on a more regular basis again.
First… Films/Directors mentioned in the film…
The film on the big screen, at the movie theater, Jerry tries to hide in…
LadyHawke (1985)… directed by Richard Donner. A film I’m betting Cassie will really like.
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)… directed by John Frankenheimer. A great companion film to this one.
Serpico (1973)… directed by Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men/Dog Day Afternoon) and starring Al Pacino as Serpico. A film based on the real life of New York police detective Frank Serpico.
Oliver Stone… director of Platoon & Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (the one you saw with Shia LeBouf. You still haven’t seen the original Wall Street (1987 ;-). Oliver Stone also directed JFK (1991) starring Kevin Costner and an All-Star cast. This is THE Conspiracy Theory movie. A Must-See film about the Kennedy Assassination. Just watch it, then look into it afterwards.
All films mentioned Highly Recommended!!!
So cool that you were craving a film like The Fugitive (1993) and recognized it’s unique quality. Like the saying goes, they just don’t make films like this anymore. The John Grisham films, The Pelican Brief (1993) & The Firm (1993) and In the Line of Fire (1993) also fit the bill, I believe. Films that rely on good old-fashioned filmmaking, storytelling and great performances to create suspense. The 90s had their own special brand of these films. Here’s some more to consider, if the mood ever strikes you…
(By the way… 1993 was a good year wasn’t it ;-)
No Way Out (1987)
Suspect (1987)
Frantic (1988)
The Package (1989)
Presumed Innocent (1990)
JFK (1991)
The Client (1994)
The Net (1995)
Executive Decision (1996)
Absolute Power (1997)
The Rainmaker (1997)
Snake Eyes (1998)
The Negotiator (1998)
Enemy of the State (1998)
U.S. Marshals (1998)
The X Files (1998)
Arlington Road (1999)
The General’s Daughter (1999)
Spy Game (2001)
(Looking through my lists… you have seen many of the great thrillers of the 90s, so I had to dig a little deeper. I’m sure you will find some enjoyment in any of these)
Lastly… Conspiracy Theory is in keeping with the Conspiracy, Psychological, Political, Mystery Thrillers that came about many years before. These are some Classics that are Must-Sees. You can see influences in Conspiracy Theory from all of these. I Highly, Highly Recommend these films…
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Seven Days in May (1964)
Blow-Up (1966)
Klute (1971)
The Day of the Jackal (1973)
The Conversation (1974)
Chinatown (1974)
The Parallax View (1974)
Three Days of the Condor (1975)
Marathon Man (1976)
Capricorn One (1977)
Coma (1978)
The China Syndrome (1979)
Blow Out (1981)
Silkwood (1983)
PS… MKUltra was real, look it up. Even Charles Manson has a possible link to it. Crazy Stuff ;-)

Don’t care what anyone saying you can’t beat a 90s thriller, there was so many great one. Like The Bone Collector, Double Jeopardy, The Negotiator, The Rainmaker, Kiss 5he Girl, Along Came a Spider, The Hand 5hat Rocks the Cradle and Arlington Road just to name a few. Regards to other Mel Gibson films I’d love you to react to Air America and Bird on a Wire as I think you’ll enjoy both.
You also mentioned The Fugitive well there’s kinda of a follow up films called US Marshall’s, it not got Harrison Ford in but Tommy Lee Jones and his crew all play the same character. To answer your question about Oliver Stone he’s a director you’ve seen Platoon. But he’s also directed Born on the 4th of July with Tom Cruise something I personally wasn’t a fan of but I think you’ll end up watching it eventually. Couple of his other films I did like are Any Given Sunday (an American Football movie) and Wall Street.

Oh, and since everyone is throwing out their Swell Mel movies recommendations-
The Man Without a Face (1993) - Mel is a teacher looking for a second chance.
Hamlet (1990) - Well... it's Hamlet. It would make a good Shakespeare week with The Merchant of Venice (2004), with Al Pachino, and Romeo and Juliet (1968), probably the best version filmed. It would also give a "reason" to watch Shakespeare in Love (1998).

I think she would react to Boogie Nights. A highly respected movie (nominated for 3 Oscars) by Paul Thomas Anderson and without excessive nudity. She likes Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore. Currently has 30 requests at popcornrequests.com.
In terms of nudity/sex, if she can handle True Detective S1 (weird stuff, strippers, prostitutes, the Marty graphic affairs, the Rust/Marty wife bent over, etc.), BS Dracula, Deadpool, An Officer and a Gentleman, and so on, she can definitely handle Boogie Nights. She liked True Detective S1 and Deadpool. Boogie Nights only has a "moderate" sex/nudity rating at IMDb. She has reacted to movies with "moderate" sex/nudity rating.

Two years ago, I stop drinking coffee, but didn't really experience benefits, but liked not being slave to coffee (as I had been for decades to avoid the caffeine-withdrawal headache). I had no headache when I stopped like I would experience when I was younger. It was easy to stop.
However, after 3 months of no coffee, I started drinking coffee again (for pleasure and the daily initial stimulant) -- I drink a half cup of coffee a day -- been 2 years now and I have had no craving to go beyond a half a cup.

I really enjoyed your reaction to finally recognising Sir Patrick Stewart. I thought it may have been during the torture scene, but he was obscured enough, that it made it even better when he was recognised one he could clearly be seen with the nose wound.

You asked who is Serpico. Serpico (Frank Serpico) was a NYPD officer. The movie "Serpico" (1973), which I recommend, is based on a true story and stars Al Pacino as Frank Serpico. Sidney Lumet who directed Serpico (1973) also directed Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and 12 Angry Men (1957).
The Grateful Dead are British agents and Jerry Garcia is still alive. Seems sad to believe (and be obsessed with) a zillion ridiculous conspiracy theories. Mel Gibson is good acting (though his character annoying at times). Julia Roberts is a good actor and beautiful. Any romance between the two developing toward the end didn't seem convincing -- a bond yes but not a romance, notwithstanding his infatuation. I like to see Patrick Stewart in anything. I couldn't get into the movie as a thriller because of how dumb (or at least convoluted) the story, but that's me, and I am happy for fastecp and other fans that you reacted to the movie. Glad the end turned out well for you. I like Taxi Driver (1976) better.

A good hidden gem, i really think those mid to late 90s thrillers are almost in a league of their own. Matrix hasn't transformed the film industry yet with crazy effects, CGI was still pretty weak so practical effects were still popular, but the plot was still the overall hero in these films.
