I liked it! This was fun, I liked the new actor but did miss Christopher Reeve, especially as Clark! The effects and music were amazing, but unsure about the ending, is there a sequel to this one? this story?
Ps-Due to scheduling conflicts, Carly and I were not able to watch Gladiator this week, that will be next week. I watched our first pick-a-flick's winner (he won but had submitted Gone Girl and I had already seen it) so he picked another one. "Conspiracy Theory" It will be up tonight!

Hi Cassie, I'd forgotten how much I love John William's Superman theme. It's just so good. I grew up in the 70's and 80's so Christopher Reeve will forever be MY Superman. Reeve's accident that left him a quadriplegic was in 1995, 11 years before this movie and 28 years from the original 1978 movie. I've been wanting to watch the Super/Man Christopher Reeve Documentary, but I already know I'll be balling. I tear up just thinking about what happened to Reeve. I remember seeing the first movie as a kid and my Aunt telling me she was going to sleep with the window open that night hoping for a visit. She's passed now, but I will always remember how all the ladies at the time developed a crush on Reeve. I understand why they cast Brandon Routh, there is a resemblance, but I missed the charm of Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent. Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin who playa Superman on the TV series just don't have the right stature that Superman should have, IMO, as both are 6' tall whereas Reeve and Routh both stood 6'4" but maybe I'm being nitpicky. As I said, I know who MY Superman is.

I never got around to seeing this movie when it was in theaters but I finally saw it years ago on DVD and I thought it was great. It wasn't the classic that the original movie was but I think they did a good job capturing that OG feel of the first movie. I do think Brandon Routh was good as C/S, he did give that feel of being a modern day Christopher Reeve. Don't hate me but I loved Kevin Spacey as Luthor more than Gene Hackman's version (I know, I know its blasphemy to say that) but I feel Spacey brought more life to this Luthor than Hackman's version, that Luthor didn't really feel like a real threat. The special effects were great, and even though it's set in modern day Metropolis the city still had that 1930s/40s look to it wit the buildings, the color tone, etc. It is a shame this movie didn't get the love it should have back in 2006 because i do feel it did justice to the original movie and captured the spirit of Christopher Reeve's iconic portrayal without being a carbon copy of him.

First time I watched this I was I little disappointed, not sure if it was because I grew up in the 80s and I could only see CR as my Superman. But over time it’s kinda grown on me and I actually really enjoyed watching it again after maybe 10 years. You definitely have to watch Man of Steel as it’s my favourite of the DCEU films, even though it’s a bit darker I actually this Cavill does a good job playing both characters.
It’s just a massive shame he never really got a proper sequel. As he just played him again in Batman V Superman (if you watch this you have to watch the uncut version as it makes more sense) & Justice League I definitely wouldn’t recommend watching ether version lol. Also I would highly recommend watching the Superman: The Christopher Reeve Story. Not sure if it would make a good reaction as you will definitely need some tissues, but it’s an excellent documentary.

I wasn't eager to watch "Superman Returns" again because the last time I watched it was the first time in the theatre. It was so DISAPPOINTING.
It was a non-super Superman movie, because Bryan Singer's Superman was devoid of the optimism and charm that defines the character and makes him universally loved. TBH Singer's Superman seemed like he was written as WOLVERINE minus the attitude. It had the same love triangle as X-Men, with James Marsden as the third wheel again! The only difference was that Wolverine's deal was he's "too cool for Xavier's school" whereas Superman's deal was passive-aggressively proving Lois Lane WRONG about "Why the world doesn't need Superman" -- as well as compelling her to admit she still loves him and they belong together. The movie persistently TEASED the audience that Superman and Lois would get back together and persistently DENIED us that happy ending, which was why the movie's ending was so unsatisfying.
It seemed obvious that the love triangle, the reveal that Lois' son was Superman's, and Lois' husband flying to Kryptonite Island to rescue them were contrived to give Richard a heroic, self-sacrificing death, that paved the way for Superman and Lois to reunite and raise their son together. BUT Bryan Singer chose to "defy audience expectations" and deliver an utterly unsatisfying non-ending that didn't resolve anything. I assumed that Bryan Singer had plans for a sequel to pick up those dangling threads and resolve the love triangle, but he made such an unsatisfying Superman movie that he justly never got his sequel.
Superman in Zac Snyder's "Man of Steel" had its own share of problems, but that movie was entertaining and rewatchable. "Superman Returns" was just BORING!

My son and I saw this movie in IMAX when it came out, but only parts of it were in 3-D. An icon would flash on the screen telling us when to put on our glasses. It was weird, but I enjoyed the movie. I thought Brandon Routh did a fine job and was happy to see him join the Arrowverse years later. Surely they intended to reboot the franchise and would have eventually answered some of the plot lines that were left hanging at the end of this movie. You really have to feel bad for Richard. He seems like a perfectly good guy, but he's not Clark/Superman.

I wanted to like him, but in the end he's just barely adequate (he makes a better Clark than he does a Superman). Not the worst Man of Steel I've ever seen, but far from the best. It's clear that Singer was trying to find the next Christopher Reeve when he should have been more interested in finding the next Superman. For all his missteps, Snyder at least got that part right.

The scene with the plane is one of the best “Superman scenes” put to film in my opinion. It’s just a shame as the rest of the film is kind of slow.
The actor who played Richard is James Marsden, Cyclops from Bryan Singer X-Men films (he directed this movie too - and is as equally icky as Kevin Spacey now). Singer dropped out of filming X3 to film Superman Returns and scheduling conflicts with X-Men and Superman drastically reduced Marsdens screen time on X3 as well (so they killed off cyclops).
I may be misremembering things but I believe the rumor at the time was that Marsden auditioned for the role of Superman (would make sense give his working relationship with Singer) but ultimately lost to Routh because of the latters physicality and resemblance to Christopher Reeve.
All that being said, the plot was just… bad lol. It’s a dumber, blunter plot recycled from Superman 1. It’s so weird that for a movie that touts itself as a sequel to Superman 2, they basically just rehash the plot from Superman 1. It’s as if JJ Abrams wrote and directed it 🤣🤣
However, after all that, I did like the movie. I really really liked Brandon Routh as Superman, he looks great in the suit and got undeniable charisma. He really put in a lot of hard work to become the man of steel and i really I wish he got another shot.

IMO my favorite Superman film (many years later before I saw 1978). I don't know if there were nay plans on continuing this and did the box office performance hinder it. This was before the MCU got started so WB may not have been thinking of a huge universe yet as they did with Man of Steel 7 years later. There is no direct sequel but Brandon Routh did reprise his role (along with Tom Welling) in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event with the Arrowverse(Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow) on CW.

I did not like Superman Returns, I thought the actors were great, Roth as Superman was great choice, and Spacey great choice for Lex. I did not like the color palette, it was not right for a Superman movie, a Superman movie needs to be more bright. He is not Batman, he is not a dark hero. I felt the story had so many plot holes, for example, Lois knowing that her child was Superman's but keeping it a secret, when in Superman II he kisses her memory of them being together in bed. How she know this? Lex plan makes no sense. the direct attempts to make it seem more dark and dreary, which does not fit superman you do not care for any of them they all seem unhappy. I could say more lol. Now, I will say, I like it more then Man of Steel. Now it was nice to see . Jack Larson and Noel Neill make a cameo appearance in the movie, Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane from the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman

I saw this one in the theater, and I absolutely love how you can see Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey try to emulate Christopher Reeves and Gene Hackman and their performance in the original movies. The movie overall I thought was really good, but it did have a few parts that were questionable. Still, I really like this one.
I honestly did not feel right about the recent trailers for the new Superman. Some things about it just do not feel right to me, and I hope it does well, but I have my doubts that I will like it.

I am so confused as to what Bryan Singer was thinking.
Superman is a paragon of Good; Lex is a paragon of Evil; and yet Lex’s girl is the one who is devoted, committed, and loyal to her man.
(What is the subtextual message of this story, “It’s better to be Evil, if you want a successful relationship and to be able to raise your own kids”?)

I'm glad that you watched this and I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
Despite being a deeply flawed film, I've always kind of liked it... or perhaps a better word is admired it. I admire its ambition, it's thematic richness and its spectacle. My problems with it, however is that it is far too long and far too slowly paced to be as engaging as it wants to be.
It is also, sadly, badly miscast. With the exception of Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, I never really bought every other major actor in their part. Kate Bosworth is far too sweet (and young) to be a convincing Lois Lane, a character who should be brash and ballsy... and she has zero chemistry with Routh. I also think it was a mistake to make her a mother setting up that love triangle that made you so uncomfortable. James Marsden is fine, but his character should never have been a part of this story. Frank Langella, who you might remember as the bad guy in DAVE, is also too subdued as the fiery Perry White (which is actually a recurring issue with this film: a lot of long, drawn out, ponderous beats that indicate a it takes itself perhaps too seriously and is too self-aware of its own "importance").
And then, of course, there's Brandon Routh. Clearly cast because of his resemblance to Christopher Reeve, Routh looks great but suffers from some of the same inadequacies the movie itself possesses. He is, as you point out, too stoic, too anemic in his portrayal and, not to pick on the guy (because I actually like him; he was great in SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD), he lacks the presence and charisma for Superman. His voice is too weak (I think Superman should always have a deep, resonant voice so that when he speaks it is with authority) and his line readings too stilted. It doesn't help probably that they give him some of the same dialogue that Reeve had in the original movie and his delivery pales by comparison. I will say that Routh does marginally better as Clark Kent where these handicaps actually become strengths.
Also, and this isn't Routh's fault, but I don't like this suit. The shades of blue and red are too dark, the shield on his chest is too small and the reduced shorts look silly (my thinking is either lean into it and have big shorts, like they do in the Richard Donner film and the upcoming James Gunn film, or get rid of them all together like Zack Snyder did in MAN OF STEEL; this in-between stage just looks ridiculous). Routh had a better suit when he reprised the character in the Arrowverse "Crisis" TV crossover event where, incidentally, he did a much better job in the part. Perhaps he was just too young here and needed to grow into the role.
The biggest problem with SR, I think, is that Brian Singer (much like Zack Snyder) just fundamentally doesn't understand this character. He tries to compensate for this by leaning so heavily on the iconography of the Donner film (the identical dialogue, the Fortress of Solitude set design, the iconic John Williams music, etc), which definitely hits my nostalgia button pretty hard, but also, unfortunately, throws its own unique elements into such stark contrast that it reminds you how much better the earlier movies are. When Snyder did his version later, he started from scratch and carved his own path, which I think Singer would have been better served doing here because my main response whenever I watch SR is that it just makes me want to watch the 1978 original again.
The critics liked SUPERMAN RETURNS for the most part but was not a successful with audiences as Warner Bros. had hoped, so it never got a sequel and instead years later, the character was rebooted in MAN OF STEEL with Henry Cavill (another deeply flawed film, but one that I actually prefer to this one). MOS corrects some of the mistakes of SR, but makes whole new ones. I think you should watch that one too (as maybe a jumping off point to a lot of the DCEU movies, not all of which are worth seeing but some of which -- like WONDER WOMAN and THE SUICIDE SQUAD-- are) and I'd be very interested to see your reaction now that you are developing the proper affection, respect and appreciation for this character who just happens to be my personal favorite superhero and a woefully underappreciated one in this increasingly cynical and nihilistic age.

I really wanted to like this movie when it came out. At the end of the day it just seems like a tribute to the Richard Donner/Lester Superman films.. but it's feels too quiet, slow, and heavy. And the editing/pacing is off to the point many of the bits fall flat. It's gets cringey. Just sayin.

Answering: is there a sequel to this one? this story?
There wasn’t a direct sequel to Superman Returns, but Brandon Routh did get to revisit his version of Superman in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event on The CW five years ago. This time, he played an older, more seasoned Superman who’d been through some heavy losses. After the events of Superman Returns, the “A reject from Gotham” gassed the Daily Planet, taking Lois Lane and his colleagues from him. Hinted to be The Joker, Gotham City was mentioned in Superman: Returns.
When we see him again, he’s wearing a suit inspired by Kingdom Come, iconic red ‘S’ shield now has a black background instead of yellow, symbolizing the hardships he’s endured while still standing as a symbol of hope. By the end of the crossover we see him again, flying above the Earth with a yellow version of the Kingdom Come logo.

There's also the Superman ’78 comic which act as a continuation of the Christopher Reeve movies. These comic stories use the likenesses of the original actors and pick up after the events of Superman II, ignoring Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Superman '78 captures the tone, style, and world of Richard Donner’s films while exploring new adventures for Christopher Reeve's Superman and the characters from those films.
What Came After Superman Returns:
After Superman Returns, DC took Superman in a new direction with Man of Steel (2013), going for a much darker tone and asking, "What if Superman existed in the real world?" This direction was heavily inspired by the success of The Dark Knight and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. It re-imagined Superman for a grittier, more grounded world, steering away from the brighter, more traditional take on the character.
A lot of people were introduced to Superman through Man of Steel, probably why, after the recent Superman (2025) teaser, I’ve heard people say things like, “This feels so different from what we’re used to with DC,” or “Superman is a dark and moody character.” It’s because that’s the version of Superman and DC they’re familiar with a darker, grittier universe. Anything that’s lighthearted, colorful, and more fantastical is something they’ve never seen from DC before, at least with Superman.
Superman recommendation:
I highly recommend Superman vs. The Elite (2012). It's not just a great Superman movie; it's also a commentary on why the traditional version of Superman is so important. In a way, it acts as a pre-response to the darker takes on the character, since it came out a year before the DC Movie Universe kicked off. The film shows that you don’t need to reinvent Superman to make him work in today’s world.

It definitely would have been beneficial if Cassie had watched a recap of Superman 1 and 2 beforehand. I feel like she didn't appreciate some of the connections to the originals as a result.
I love this movie. While of course the ending feels a little unfinished, it's clear they indent there to be a sequel. But despite positive critic reviews it just didn't get the box office results it deserved, and alas the studio made it a one-and-done.
I love the Superman actions scenes in this movie. In fact I rate the look of them even better than Man Of Steel, which feels very shaky and unfocused. My only real gripe with this movie is how his hair keeps goes from messy to perfect from one scene to the next.
P.s. Cassie, Henry Cavill's surname is pronounce like TRAVEL. CAVEL. So says the man himself.

Christopher Reeve is my "Superman", much like Michael Keaton is my "Batman". Part of that is nostalgia as they were part of my childhood, but I also like their performances even now. Brandon Routh perhaps got a rough go of it, as not all of it would be on him. I hadn't seen this since its release, and I thought it felt a bit bland then, but I had always thought maybe it was just me and where I was in my life at the time, but it seems it was the movie. I don't think it was bad, just very much in the middle.
I did like that you brought up "The Notebook" Cassie. When I saw his name in the credits I suddenly realised that he played "Lois Lane's" partner and I instantly started thinking of all the triangular relationships he has in movies, so I did laugh when "The Notebook" was mentioned as I had the same thought, along with "Enchanted", "The Best of Men", the "X-men" movies. I am definitely sure there there are others, but that was just off the top of my head while of was watching.
Cassie. you recognised Parker Posey with "her! her!", and I did wonder if you knew where you recognised her from and didn't say, or you recognised her but not sure from where? I am aware in the past there has been some reticence about saying from where you know an actor. I was curious as to where, if you did.... my guess was going to be "You've got mail".

This movie just seems weird. I know a lot of people just say its mopey and like to call it dead beat dad the movie but my main isssue is that its literally a repeat of the first film. The villain plot is exactly the same. Also what kind of real estate are you gonna get when it looks like giant rock spires. Also some unintentionally funny moments like the beginning when he takes his wig off and the infinitely memed “WRONG!” Scene. Also Bryan Singer is not a fan of comics or superman he was just a fan of the 78 film and it shows as their is hollow souless nature to this film. Drab and dreary is not superman and neither was xmen for that matter.

First watch. I liked it ok. Not the kind of movie I typically watch. I thought the movie a little long. I liked the production better than Superman 2. Superman (1978) is my favorite of the three (the only three Superman movies I have watched). I will do a first watch of Man of Steel (2013) when you react to it (I am curious). [Edit: I take that back -- I just watched a trailer of Man of Steel (2013) and believe I did watch at least most of it but don't really remember.]
Lois is no longer an option for Superman because she is happily married to Richard. I thought Routh was good as Superman/Clark Kent. I liked Bosworth as Lois. I guess it is a Superman power that prevents Lois from recognizing Clark Kent as Superman -- I remember discussing that with respect to Superman 1/2. I don't fully remember why Superman had to erase Lois' memory.
As you did, I liked the scene early in the movie of Superman guiding the plane down. Later in the movie, I liked when you said: "It's about time." I thought the special effects, lighting, color, etc. were good in the movie (to me, better than Superman 2). The Lex Luthor plan/scheme seemed awkward to me, as it apparently did to you too. For my personal tastes, I give the movie a B-
I remember the actor who played Richard from my first watch of X-Men movies last year when watching your reactions to X-Men. As for Lex Luther, Kevin Spacey is hard to look at now. Some of my favorite movies (e.g., American Beauty) with Kevin Spacey I no longer rewatch. Lastly, while I was not a big fan of Conspiracy Theory back in the day, congrats to the pick-a-flick winner. I will give Conspiracy Theory another try.

The old bartender who served Clark and Jimmy was played by Jack Larson who also played Jimmy Olsen in the 50's Adventures of Superman tv series. The old lady who died at the beginning of the movie and signed everything over to Lex Luther was played by Noel Neill who played Lois Lane on that same show.

After the third and fourth Superman films, Warner shelved the franchise for a time but made several attempts to revive it. One of the most unusual concept was a Superman movie in the late 90s, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Tim Burton. Warner invested significant resources into the project, including scripts, costumes, set designs, screen tests, and overall the pre-production was almost finished before pulling the plug. After several other failed efforts, Bryan Singer ultimately convinced the studio with his pitch, bolstered by the success of X-Men and X2.
This movie often receives a fair amount of criticism, but overall, I think it’s a reasonably solid entry in the franchise. I do like some aspects of it, like the love triangle and Superman having a child are both interesting takes. Although at the same time I agree with others that it has some issues, mostly that it is rehashing too much of the first movie's plot, or that Bosworth wasn't the best choice for Lois. Bryan Singer chose to approach it as a continuation of the first two Superman films, due to his appreciation for Richard Donner's work, which he cited as a major influence. Interestingly, the production of this film likely played a key role in the preparation and release of the Richard Donner cut of Superman II that same year, as the team tracked down all the Donner footage to incorporate Marlon Brando into the movie.
Initially, there were plans for multiple movies, but Warner ultimately decided not to greenlight a sequel and allowed the actors' contracts to expire, reportedly due to the underwhelming box office returns. I believe at the time, this became the most expensive movie ever made, with a massive $200 million production budget and an estimated near $100 million spent on marketing. However, it only grossed $400 million worldwide. Additionally, I've read some claims that Warner included the pre-production costs of the earlier failed attempts in the budget, which inflated the reported expenses of the movie by tens of millions of dollars.

Aside from making James Marsden (Richard) very likable and a great dad, I love this version of Superman. The love child and triangle isn’t something I expected in a Superman movie - awkwardly strange choice really. I do love the music in this one (much of it isn’t by John Williams, but John Ottman) and Brandon Routh was great. Like most fans would tell you, CHRISTOPHER REEVE will always be the Gold Standard, but I place this one above Henry Cavill.

The big mistake of this movie is going back to the Lex Luthor well once again. Real estate and nuclear weapons as well? We have seen this movie already even though it wasn't sold as a remake.
Bring in someone else like Brainiac. It isn't the worst movie in the world, but it isn't what it could have been.

Lois - “The world doesn’t need a savior, and neither do I”
Cassie - “I mean, you’d be dead in a plane, but that’s okay”
Cassie - “I could never be with Superman. I’m too scared of heights.”
Cassie, you may be the funniest reactor I have come across. Another fantastic reaction. It’s hard to say where I would rank this movie among all of the Superman movies and shows I have seen. Like I said earlier, I really like Brandon Routh as Superman (and yes, maybe his Clark Kent could have been a littler more nerdier like Reeve’s Clark Kent), and I’ve always liked this movie. Superman and Superman II will always be my favorites. I guess I’ll leave it at that.
There were plans to continue with Brandon Routh in the role as Superman with sequels to this movie, but because this movie wasn’t as financially successful as was hoped, and it wasn’t well received by fans and critics, those movies were scrapped, and a total reboot was made. That is where Henry Cavill (pronounced like a judge’s gavel) and Man of Steel come in. Cant wait for your reaction to that one!

In the Superman and Lois series? Absolutely. Fantastic ones. And the end of season 3 into the entirety of season 4 is one of the best wrap ups to a story I’ve ever seen with the character arcs for literally everybody
When James gone came in to cancel everything across the board because of the reboot, they almost cut this off after season three which would’ve been horrific but since they had the notice that it was going to be their final season, they got to write this in a fantastic way, and I don’t even know how the writers have done it, but it was wonderful.

Cassie asked why his suit was untarnished as he flew through the fire. Superman has a kind of biological aura surrounding his whole body. It therefore protects his suit, and as he can also unconsciously extend it further past his own body it's also why people don't feel cold when he flies with them or how he can protect someone in his embrace from an explosion or fireball etc. I just wish the comics would use his aura to solve his identity recognition issue somehow so it can be adopted by all future superman IP and we can finally put it to bed once and for all.

I would give it a 3 out of 5. I really liked Superman even though this Superman is really a jerk. He skips out of Lois for 5 years, gets upset when she moved on, spies on her, then makes moves on her even though she is with someone else. Real d-bag moves for Superman. But he plays the part well and the film looks good.

I really enjoyed this when it first came out and that airplane/space shuttle sequence was one of the best ever, in my humble opinion. The only criticism I have and most everyone shared it as well, was Lex Luthor’s obsession with land once again. I think maybe the writers should have leaned into Krypton’s technology that Lex stole from the crystals and Lex could’ve fought Superman in the final scene
I believe Cassie will enjoy Henry Cavill’s Superman as well as the rest of the Snyderverse

I am sure it’s not something that you would be able to put on the channel, (although I guy can hope! lol) BUT if you ever get a chance and want to see the absolute best Superman ever done for TV and comes very close to the movies, check out on Max Superman and Lois. It tells a story that hasn’t really been told much outside of any comics and in a different way than ever because it is Superman after he’s been Superman for 20 years and he’s married to Lois and they have kids. It is the most fantastic family drama while also being a Superman series that you could ever imagine and the family dynamic is beautiful! At the same time it shows how absolutely powerful Superman is. This series is EPIC. It’s four seasons with 15 episodes in the first three seasons and 10 episodes in the final and the only reason it got canceled was because James Gunn canceled all DC universe shows and projects because of his reboot of the DCU with this new Superman coming, but you would absolutely love this show. I can’t even tell you how great it is.

Pros: the general look, the music and horrible person aside Kevin Spacey was great as Lex.
Cons: I think Kate Bosworth was miscast, I think it was too long and a bit boring. As someone who's read the comics and watched the 90s-00s cartoons I wanted him to be flying around punching stuff and fighting colorful villains in addition to saving people and fighting small crime. I mean Luthor threw a punch in this movie but not Superman?
As for where this goes, unfortunately this movie made decent money but not enough to offset it's budget so the next Superman movie, Man of Steel with Henry Cavill (pronounced like the word HAVE-ill) is a complete reboot that doesn't follow up on this or the Reeve movies.
A few years ago on the DC shows that were airing on the CW at the time they did a big crossover event where they visited all sorts of alternate universes such as the Smallville one with Tom welling and this one where Brandon Routh reprised his role and we found out a little bit of what happened to his Superman. It was very ironic because Routh had a long running role in those DC shows as an entirely different character called the Atom (basically DC's ant-man) and they made a meta joke about then looking alike

Two things- 1- If you watch more Superman, consider the animated movie Superman/Batman - Apocalypse (2010).
2- My second favorite thing from the Justice League TV show (spoiler for the show, but who cares, she's not going to watch it)-
Though we gather here today, bound together in sorrow and loss, we share a precious gift. We are, all of us, privileged to live a life that has been touched by Superman. The Man of Steel possessed many extraordinary gifts, and he shared them with us freely. None of these gifts were more remarkable than his ability to discern what needed to be done, and his unfailing courage in doing it, whatever the personal cost. Let us all strive to accept his gift, and pass it along, as an ongoing tribute to Kal-El of Krypton, the immigrant from the stars, who taught us all how to be heroes.- Martian Manhunter

A movie with Eva Marie Saint that I really want Cassie to see is The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966) also with Carl Reiner, Brian Keith, Jonathan Winters, John Phillip Law, and in his first Oscar nominated performance, Alan Arkin. Really funny comedy that deserves a watch.

This was a very pretty movie to look at. The color grading, warm lighting in a lot of the scenes; greens, blues, oranges and sunsets...nice camera angles...visually one of the nicest looking superhero movies ever. The set design is well done too and feels straight out of the comics. Routh and Bosworth are pretty together, too. All in all a tad on the boring side, but the overall experience is pretty great.

I always thought Kevin Spacey was a phenomenal actor, and his turn as Lex Luthor is terrific. I think there were better options than Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, but I didn’t dislike her performance. I watched this about a decade ago, and I remembered when it came out and the dichotomy between critics who loved it and fans who hated it. I don't actually think it's that bad and as a sequel to the Reeve movies, it's pretty well constructed. To me the biggest sin is that it's just boring

So like the dark ending of Man of Steel. Superman would not have done what he did in Snyder version either. Both are dark and Superman is about bringing hope to people.

I respectfully disagree with Cassie about the new Superman trailer. I think it looks awful. His suit looks like the superhero pajamas we used to wear as small kids in the 70s. And it looks padded. Not sculpted, padded.
As for this entry, I thought they captured the spirit of Superman…mostly. I didn’t like the Stalker Superman aspect. And I thought Brandon Routh’s portrayal was devoid of charm and not in the same league as Reeves’ version. I also remember being creeped out when I saw it in theaters. How old was Lois when he knocked her up? Because the actress that played her was 23 when the movie was released and looks younger than that in the movie. She’d have barely been out of high school. And to win the Pulitzer Prize at her age?
But the biggest problem with the movie is simply that the character of Superman isn’t interesting. Christopher Reeves managed to overcome the problems with the character thru sheer charisma. I don’t believe that was the case in this film.
PS: The creator of Superman appropriated the Fortress of Solitude concept from a pulp magazine character called Doc Savage, Man of Bronze. Doc Savage had a hideaway in the Arctic which he called the Fortress of Solitude and which he repaired to in order to work on new inventions, chemical concoctions, etc. Doc Savage premiered half a decade before Superman.

released in 2006 and directed by Bryan Singer; as I recall, this was the reason why he didn't direct X-Men: The Last Stand, which was also released that same year

It's a decent Superman movie. Kevin Spacey was a good Luthor and Brandon Routh was an okay Superman.
Hope she watches Man of Steel with Henry Cavill and the following Snyderverse series

Probably for the best this never got a sequel. Before it became the Henry Cavill reboot, “Man of Steel” was originally the title for the sequel to Superman Returns. The plan was for a villain called Brainiac to mutate Superman’s son, Jason, into a rampaging monster called Doomsday, and the movie was going to end with Superman beating his own son to death. Dark stuff, and I have no idea how the filmmakers thought they were gonna get away with that.

I don’t know if it’s one you would do on Patreon or on your channel but if you ever decided to watch the new documentary about Christopher Reeve called Super/Man about everything that happened after he was paralyzed in the impact his foundation made. It is a fantastic documentary and a great tribute to his life

That wasn't a different Superman. It was intended to be the same Superman.

I met Parker Posey and I told her I really dug this movie and how sorry I was that it didn’t do better at the box office. She agreed and sang the praises of the director Bryan Singer

I think Superman comes across as a massive stalkery creep in this movie. And the implications of Lois having a child and having her memory erased… woooo super weird and uncool.
There isn’t a sequel to this movie but Brandon Routh did get to return to the role of a different Superman in the CW/DC universe in the Supergirl/Arrow/The Flash crossover series.
