[YT Edit] An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "An Officer and a Gentleman" which will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

Comments

Another good Gere movie is Shall We Dance 2004. I'd love to see a reaction to that one.

Darreld Studie

Bruce Willis plays a good villain in that movie

Edward Robson

I've never seen him play a villain before.

Chris Thom

An Officer and a Gentleman (nominated for 6 Oscars) is not perfect, but not a bad movie. Agree that there is nostalgia. After all, the movie was part of the pop culture. The third-highest-grossing film of 1982 (E.T. was first). For my personal tastes, I give it 7.5/10. Gossett Jr won the Oscar but Deborah Winger (nominated for Oscar) was my favorite. My ex-wife and daughter liked the movie. The final scene is generally considered iconic.

Clay F

I’d be ok with that, as Willis plays a great villain. But there’s not that many more that I like with him in tbh.

Dean Holt

For me the film was excellent and well made. I feel all the actors did a great job in portraying the characters.

Joe

I still don’t think they would have enjoyed it more knowing what the film was going in. Because of the vulgar language used to describe the women at times, but the four main characters (the two guys and two women) where all horrible people in general. With is one of the reasons I’ve never been a fan of the movie.

I get people can love bad movies because of nostalgia, But this is even worse than I remember it being. I thought watching the YouTube edit would make it a bit better but I still thought it was terrible film. I also got the feeling the girls didn’t really like it ether. But the main cast are just horrible people with the exceptions of Seeger and Louis Gossett Jr who was the highlight of the film. But at least they have tick it off the list as it is one they probably should watch.

Dean Holt

I would love to see the next Richard Gere film be The Jackal 1997

Edward Robson

🤗😄

Jens Kristensen

Agree. It's nice to see a character arc that actually feels gritty and real. ACTUAL growth and change usually isn't pretty. At least not at first.

Chris Thom

She posts the full reaction days before the YT edit. In the meantime, she can put out a lot of content/polls/upcoming (like now) - so you just have to keep scrolling down.

2-Can

I remember when this movie came out and many recruits said the drill instructor portrayal was spot on. So life isn’t always a romcom.

Bruce Redfield

Thanks Mike 👍

Larry

This isn't a rom-com?! Sticking with Richard Gere, next thing you're going to tell me Looking for Mr. Goodbar isn't a romance!!!

Umm I just rented the movie then realized this is a YouTube edit, where is the full reaction?

Larry

Mike is right here: Google does suck.

Regarding Sid's death scene being blurred out, I think that's just a YouTube demonetization thing. I see many other channels unable to even mention the word suicide without it being bleeped out for fear of demonetization. As such I'm sure they had to essentially remove it as much as possible to avoid that.

Stranger2Reality

I knew you respected/appreciated the guy. Didn't mean to imply otherwise. My comment referring to tough job was more for me -- in what I was saying I wanted. Agree with your opinion on the final scene. By the way, she might not have chosen the movie as a popcorn pick if she had known the movie wasn't a rom-com or light romance.

Clay F

Clay. Definitely worth noting that I have the greatest respect for the guy who edits Cassie's reactions for YT. The man's an artist. He's provided literally hundreds of superb edits that have entertained me no end. It doesn't change my opinion of that final scene.

Clarence Newman

Some channels, for example Media Nights and Cinepals have much longer edits in general. Cassie should start adding in more scenes to her edits also.

Joe

Even with their incorrect expectations going in, I think the full reaction overall was a success. As for this edited version, I would like to have seen a few seconds of the initial intimate scene between Zach/Paula, though did have quite a bit of their second intimate scene. Those are important to the movie. The final scene you allude to is considered iconic by many -- arguably what the movie is most known for. Cutting the movie down is a tough job for the editor.

Clay F

Ah, ok. I didn't equate Google with Youtube.

Clarence Newman

Google (YouTube) is where they are uploading to. This one has a Patreon upload, but YouTube is the actual destination. For a good example, look at the Superbad reactions, most get away with the beginning but Cinebinge has to censor most of it.

Mike Lemon

I take it that's because they use Google to upload, Mike? My point is that it jumped out at me this time because I don't think I've ever seen it before. Multiple times on other channels (ie the mash-ups I sometimes watch), but never on here. Maybe that's a memory block on my part, but I'm almost sure it's the first time on a PiB reaction.

Clarence Newman

You're forgetting one big thing- Google sucks. Often what is blurred or cut isn't the choice of the "creator". Google also isn't consistent, what one person gets away with another will get hit against. And building off that, I hope they start uploading to Rumble again. There is still a lot to backup in case some studio gets strike happy.

Mike Lemon

I went through Navy OCS in Pensacola back in 98. The Marine Corps Drill Instructor, the screaming, the whole nine yards. It was an amazing experience.

bgb1975 (Brian)

God bless, KV. You saved his life, and all the lives of people that man touched in a positive way afterwards. People often forget that most of the guys in basic are 17-19 years old. Think of yourself at that age—the emotions are raw and on rapid rotation. Add to that the combustion of sleep-deprived high-stress military training where they work to break you down physically and especially mentally. As KV said, no structure to the days. No service breaks down the individual more than the Marines. The intensity is unparalleled outside of the special forces. Now add to that the worst kind of Dear John letter wrapped in all the emotions that both of you are feeling after losing a child. So, so very hard. My heart goes out to that man. I hope he found a reason to go on and a positive purpose for his life.

Above Average Dave

KV, so sorry. That’s must of been really tough. Yeah, that scene gets me too, it when he finally breaks and the truth comes out. Great acting and writing.

Mark White

Had some spare time so I just watched this. I actually think (once we get past the opening scene that burst the ladies' rom-com bubble) that there's some good reaction in here. It may not have been fun for them, but they certainly engaged with the characters and their joy when Seegar finally gets over the wall was fun to see. They put themselves through a difficult story for us and I appreciate that. There are a couple of things to point out though. 1) I can't remember the last time I saw a difficult scene completely blurred out on this channel. That happens a lot on other channels, but I can't remember it happening here. I'm talking about Sid's suicide, of course. I know he was naked, but nudity is routinely pixellated out in other reactions without blurring the entire scene. To continue to blur it out when the scene moves to close-up is baffling. 2) The editing of the iconic and triumphant final scene is absolutely brutal. I would go as far as to say that that needs to be redone. Just show the whole scene. It's only 5 minutes. Overall, a good reaction. If only they had known upfront that it wasn't a rom-com. 😕

Clarence Newman

That's a hell of a thing to come back and find, K V. The really sad thing about all of that is that both your friend and his girlfriend probably acted on impulse at a time of great distress. If only they'd slept on it for one night, they would probably have found another way. There's a lesson there somewhere.

Clarence Newman

I have to admit, their reaction to this was baffling.

John Armbruster

The scene where his friend kill’s himself is a very common thing during military training, often having to do with relationship issues, so I found it very realistic. When I was awaiting the beginning of Infantry Training after Boot Camp, we were living in a barracks for 3 weeks with no structure to the day. We came back from a run one day, and I found one of our fellow marines hanging from a bedsheet in his locker. He was a dark shade of blue, but not dead yet. Another Marine and I managed to cut the sheet and I remember seeing his face go from blue to red distinctly. He lived, but was removed from our upcoming class. The night before, he had said his girlfriend back home had lost their baby during her pregnancy and she broke up with him because he wasn’t there for her and she didn’t want to date someone who would be gone all the time. Never found out what happened to him, I assume he was discharged. I think this is a great movie, Richard Gere’s “I got no place else to go” scene is right up there with Mel Gibson’s Braveheart betrayal scene.

K V

I'm going to watch the YT edit this evening, but having watched the full reaction already, I can't say I'm looking forward to it. This is such a great film, and I'm disappointed Cassie and Carly weren't able to enjoy it because of a glaring misconception going in. How on earth they thought this was a rom-com I have no idea, but if they'd been prepared for the style of movie it is, I'm sure they would've enjoyed it more. Maybe Carly would've chosen to skip it and that would've been fine (I respect her right to do that), but either way, the expectation of a light romance really doomed this one from the start.

Clarence Newman

WTF? You clipped the best part of the movie.

JT

Have seen this before. I love Norm.

V M

Then there's Oscar Pistorius. ADDED: If you insist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTWDNIgM2pA

I once went to see Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch. A short ways in, technical difficulties occurred. After 10-15 minutes of waiting for a solution, I said s--- this, and entered another room which was screening Girls' Night*. I remember it as being OK, but it wasn't *quite* what I had signed up for. :-) * I think. I have very little memory of it.

Happy Hanukkah

Great comment Stranger, pretty much sums up everything I was going to say. I especially like “ finally learns to love himself, which allows him to love Paula as well” . This is so true and something I think some of us have either gone through ourselves at some point in our lives or seen someone dear to us go through.

Mark White

I'm really bummed by this reaction. I feel like Cassie would have liked this more if she just watched it alone, felt like she and Carly talked over a bunch of important stuff and ended up missing things. That and also going in with the expectation that this would be a light rom com I think kinda ruined the experience for Cassie a bit. I hope someday she revisits this on her own, maybe knowing more what to expect, because I think she'll enjoy it a lot more. I love any movie with a convincing character arc, whether it's someone good who breaks bad, or a bad person who works through their trauma and becomes a good person in the end. This movie is definitely the latter. Mayo goes from an absolutely broken person at the start to someone with character who finally learns to love himself, which allows him to love Paula as well. I love at the end how much you just believe these two will be happy together, because of what they've each been through, separately and together. This movie gets me every time.

Stranger2Reality

I'm sure this is especially true if they're going to put you in the pilot's seat of a multi-million dollar plane. They want to make sure anyone who isn't up to it doesn't get through.

Stranger2Reality

I served in the U.S. Army. If you think basic training is hard, it is nothing compared to being in a combat zone. I look back on my Basic Training as one of my favorite times in the military. The drill instructors are tough to ensure that recruits that cannot handle high stress environments are weeded out. The last thing you need in a fire fight with an enemy, whose goal is to kill you, is your battle buddy freaking out.

Darren Harrison

Gere's friend in the movie was from The Lords of Discipline. That was a good one. Some Pat Conroy movies would be good on the channel I think. The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides, etc. One of the great American authors. The movies are pretty good, too.

Chris Thom

Deborah Winger is awesome in this. Watching the YT edit premiere now on youtube

Clay F

Two of the last three movies you've done are in my all time top ten: this one and "Million Dollar Baby". I love the incredibly deep emotional resonance of both of them, and how they combine joy and sorrow so effectively to break your heart. I dont think either were particular favorites of yours, but it was interesting seeing your reaction to them. Happier movies ahead, I'm sure.

Cliff Endicott

"I got nowhere else to go. .... I got nothin' else." "You know something, you ain't nothing special. You got no manners, you treat woman like whores and if you ask me you got no chance of being no officer." "Family of gooks are sitting in the ditch; Little baby sucking on his mama's tit; Chemical firms don't give a shit; That napalm sticks to kids." "Oh, Sid. Let's do it right now. I wonder where we'll get stationed? I've always wanted to go to Hawaii." "Honey, we're not being stationed anywhere. I D.O.R.'d."

Clay F

Ah good times. To be young and poor and sneaking in the side entrance. Lol. We literally got chased by an usher once.

Chris Thom

I realized I never saw this whole movie. Me and my friends snuck in after we watched anther movie, and it let out. I only caught the last half.

TheSingulatarian

Oh I have seen this. It's been a while, though.

Chris Thom

I'm really looking forward to this reaction.

Stuart Guthrie Jr.

"I'm hoping it's like a RomCom" Oh, dear...

Molly Campbell

Watched both top guns and goes "isn't the navy boats", I'm In the army so I don't care but the sailors aren't going to like that.

austin riehl

Happy New Year !!! I would like to see you do a reaction to First Knight with Richard Gere and Sean Connery. A movie which I think you would enjoy.

David

Absolutely love this movie! Can't wait to watch this.

Stranger2Reality

It’s a fantabulous night to make romance
