[YT Edit] Santa Claus is Comin to Town (1970)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, which will premiere shortly!

Comments

I don't think Rankin Bass did any Oz stuff in the 80s, although the two Oz-related things that they were associated with did become available for syndication maybe in the 80s. Both of their Oz releases were made in the 60s (both by a studio in Canada) and were traditional animation and not puppetmation I believe. Having said that, Rankin Bass was famous for outsourcing their animated and "puppet-mated" released to other sources, including a variety of international sources. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for example was done by Japanese animators. It's possible there are some specials that I'm not aware of or haven't seen that used clay.

Was watching some scenes from that weird Oz movie from the 80's, and I think that actually used clay. Think the ones with scenes where it gets all melty are. Or maybe it's a totally different chemical. I don't know. But whatever it is gives a cool morphing effect.

Chris Thom

I dug Rudolph too - who didn't? To this day I still do a Yukon Cornelius impression when something doesn't pan out. The Year Without A Santa Claus is my Favorite overall though I think (Rudolph is second, and Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town is probably third) - Heat Miser is just my favorite. I even dressed up as Heat Miser one year for Halloween and my costume was pretty cool. Only two people recognized me though - most people just thought I was a clown...that's just sad. Lol.

Daniel Allen

As a kid, my favorite was "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (1964). Second was the animated "Frosty the Snowman" (1969) .

So, just to clarify, it's techinically not "claymation," there is no clay used for the Rankin Bass stuff. It's stop-motion animation using puppets, or what I like to call "puppetmation." More recent examples of films using puppets and stop-motion techniques include the Tim Burton films "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Corpse Bride," as well as all the Laika Studios films like "Coraline" and "ParaNorman." I definitely think Cassie should react to more of these classic Christmas and other holiday stop-motion films and animated shows. One of my personal favorites among the classics is another Rankin Bass show titled "The Year Without A Santa Claus." Heat Miser rules! And now I'm wondering if Cassie has seen the 3 Charlie Brown holiday classics - holiday programming for kids doesn't get any better than those.

This technically isn’t ‘Claymation’ it’s just stop motion animation using wood & plastic puppets. Claymation is when the puppets are made of something like plasticine clay. In the US Will Vinton’s California Raisins and in the UK Aardman’s Wallace & Gromit would be good examples.

Of course the greatest explanation of the animation techniques used here was on the 1990s TV series The Fast Show. https://youtu.be/f19hF7-nT8g?si=VNkqfTjl6FSG8CHH

This Collection from the 60s I watched them as a kid in the 70s.🇨🇦 But been on tv forever. 😉 Recognized Mickey Rooney but also has Fred Astaire doing voice overs. This one 1970.

John Liebling

Yes! I had forgotten all about Charlie Brown! There are so many good ones, I guess an old guy like me can't remember them all!

Chris

Sure thing,after Charlie Brown. :)

Celeste McAllister

These Claymation films were the inspiration for a very young David Berenbaum, the guy who wrote Elf, with Will Ferrell. If you recall, they included some old school Claymation at the start of Buddies adventure, before he arrived in NY.

John Liebling

The full reaction is up, the YT edit should arrive soon

V M

Cassie that's Fred Astaire Claymation. Please watch a Fred Astaire movie in 2025. As great as Gene Kelly is, Fred is a step above. In basketball terms, think of comparing the great Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan. In this scenario Gene is Kobe and Fred is Jordan. All the Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger films are what you like, romantic, with 1930s music. Those movies won't let you down. Please give at least one a try. Maybe start up a Rogers and Astaire poll for Jan, Feb, or March of 2025.

John Liebling

I've asked this a couple times, but did the Holdovers YT edit just get skipped? Two weeks ago on the Upcoming post it said The Holdovers, Mission Impossible and Star Trek, then the following week we got Santa Claus, Christmas Carol and Clint Eastwood poll winner, so it looks like the Holdovers got skipped and was instead replaced with the Shop Around the Corner. Is the Holdovers still coming, or did that get dropped? Or are there copyright issues or something? Just curious about the upcoming schedule.

Stranger2Reality

Hope you're feeling better Cassie. Thanks for the movie

V M

Yes! Rudolph must be next!

Chris

Merry Christmas Cassie. Hope you have a wonderful holiday

Katie Jackson

Oh and don't forget The Snowman (1982). It may cure you just by watching it.

Clarence Newman

Thank you Cassie. It's past my bedtime so this will have to wait till tomorrow. It's nice to have a few Popcorn presents to open, although I'm glad the YT edit of Million Dollar Baby is still a few days away. Be well soon, please. You've spent enough time playing the viral version of Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable. Hopefully, in 2025, you'll finally get to be Bruce Willis.

Clarence Newman

Merry Christmas PIB🎄🎁 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' Please! i don't want to wait till next year! 🖖

Celeste McAllister

Thank you Cassie! 🙂❤️👍
