Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Full Reaction

SPOLERS AHEAD: If you haven't seen this movie yet, don't read below!!

Well this broke me in half, but it didn't put me together again. OH MY GOSH It was so emotional . I thought Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman were excellent. I fell in love with all of them, especially Frank. It is one that I probably can't watch again, but it was great storytelling and let you know the characters in such a short time

Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Full Reaction

Comments

Happy to join Cassie's channel. My first watch of her reaction! The first of many others I'm sure to enjoy!

Romero

I have to give Clint credit; he's pretty good at reaching inside your chest and pulling your heart out. What an emotional ride that was.

Eddie Perkins

I saw it when it came out and it’s a movie I don’t think I can watch again. It’s very well done, but heart wrenching

Darren Harrison

That movie.... this was the first time watching it for me as well.. I can't watch it again. That tore me apart too.

Robert

“I just want what’s best for you Manushka.” - Michael Scott

Cole Jennett

bgb thanks for feedback. I need to rewatch A Perfect World — has been so long.

Clay F

Hey Clay - I finally watched INVICTUS. Solid, but I still think A PERFECT WORLD has it beat.

bgb1975 (Brian)

The outro score was BEAUTIFUL!! I’m not sure if it was part of the movie music or your own. But it was so lovely. Listen, I knew this would make you sad at the end. I really cried too, the first time and I cried the second time too. But it seems that what you said is that we just have to remember that she came from nothing and worked her way to the top. It was her dream and she fought in more ways than one to reach it. And she did. People shouting her name from the stands all over the world. But she got a bonus. She got the love of a “father” and Frankie found the devotion and love of a “daughter”. ❤️ “My darling, my Blood” really, really took me down the first time. Idk if that is what it meant truly, or if that’s what Frankie needed to tell her it meant. But I won’t hold that against him. He was, as you said, in an impossible situation. 💔 I’ll go with the alternate ending you suggested. ❤️ I’m watching Dec 29, so it’s already AFTER Christmas for me. But I also knew the movie. Clint Eastwood is a phenomenal actor, writer, director & producer. Hope you’re laughing again and over your cold. (I have it now btw!) 🤔Love ya too, Cassie!! Happy New Year 🎊

Carol Rocha

Fox and the Hound is the saddest movie I have ever seen. Million Dollar Baby doesn't come close to it.

Mike Lemon

Thanks 🙂 Well we are bunch of subscribers from Sweden 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪 I think we are like 10-ish 🤔🤔😄😄

Björn Karlsson

I saw in in the movies when it first came out and haven't been able to watch it again. It destroyed me totally as it did everyone in the movie theatre. I don't know if there is a sadder movie ever made, perhaps 1959's Imitation of Life with Lana Turner and Sandra Dee. Million Dollar baby is a beautiful movie, perhaps Clint Eastwood's and Morgan Freeman's best and obviously Hilary Swank was incredible all three won Oscars for their performance that year. This movie is the essence of love, it's just so darn tragic!

Lana Gorgeous

Yes, Million Dollar Baby is based on a true story, inspired by the 1996 incident involving Katie Dallam, the first female professional boxer to be seriously injured in the ring

Doc Larry

"Million Dollar Baby" is a profoundly emotional film that explores themes of sacrifice, resilience, and the complexities of relationships. Central to the story is Maggie, whose relentless determination to become a boxer is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Her journey is filled with struggles, from her harsh upbringing to the challenges she faces in the ring, creating a powerful narrative that resonates deeply with audiences. Cassie's emotional roller coasters during her reaction to the film had me in tears 😭, perfectly capturing the impact of Maggie’s story and the weight of her aspirations against the odds. The bond between Maggie and her trainer, Frankie, adds an additional layer of depth to the film. As their relationship evolves, Frankie becomes a father figure, providing guidance and support that highlights the transformative power of mentorship. The stark contrast between Maggie’s dedication and her family’s neglect is particularly striking, with Cassie's anger toward Maggie’s family at the hospital underscoring the heartache of betrayal. The film’s climax, where Maggie faces a life-altering decision, serves as a poignant reminder of love, sacrifice, and the ultimate cost of ambition. "Million Dollar Baby" leaves a lasting impact, prompting viewers to reflect on their values and the lengths they will go to achieve their dreams, while Cassie's emotions enhances the film’s powerful message. ❤️‍🩹

Larry

Can’t find it in Australia. (Thankfully I still have it on DVD) 😎🤙

WeekendWarrior88

I was thinking if you had a VPN.

Clay F

Pretty sure it’s cheaper for me to just buy the dvd than move to the US, but thanks anyway.

Luke Godfrey

Streaming on Netflix in US.

Clay F

Hyperbole was enough for most people to get the joke. Work on yourself.

Brian Lowery

Hmm. I can’t find this movie on any of the streaming platforms here in the UK. Thought for sure it would at least be on prime to rent or buy if nowhere else. Only way I can watch this reaction now is if I want to buy the dvd. Heavy sigh!

Luke Godfrey

Cassie, watch this and be reminded this is storytelling at its best. https://youtu.be/bWGNsP26ttQ?si=ZZysZmp0X2vh163i

Michael McErlain

Great post. I honestly think that Jersey girl might be one of the only Kevin Smith movies that would be suitable for Cassie. I think she would really connect with the story and it doesn't have some of Kevin's proclivities for profanity / crude humor that might turn her off. Apparently in a weird twist of fate Cassie does know who Kevin Smith is from his appearance in the Jennifer Garner movie catch and release.

Canadianant

Clint Eastwood, an incredible director and actor. Gran Torino a 2008 Movie that was very good acting as well. From Wikipedia, the Million Dollar Baby released on December 15, 2004, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It received critical acclaim and grossed $216.8 million worldwide. The film garnered seven nominations at the 77th Academy Awards and won four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Freeman). It has since been cited as one of the best films of the 2000s, the 21st century and of all-time

Doc Larry

Great movies Clay

Cassie, I thought this might be a hard movie for you to watch. I know how much you like happy endings... In a way, for me, the movie has a beautiful ending for the bad turn it takes. Life is hard. I figure for the type of person like Maggie, life can be downright cruel. Yet Maggie was a fighter. She gave her all and when she found herself down and out. She was able to take her leave on her terms. She was lucky to have Fankie in her corner. Frankie is an interesting character. I've known men like him. A good man who is unable to let go of their hurt and sadness. A man who looks mean on the outside but is the type of man who would jump into danger to protect the ones he love. He's a man who comes off a little overprotective. Maybe because when he lets go something goes wrong. Some people react to bad luck as if it's their fault. Frankie might have suffered more than his fair share of bad luck while trying to protect the people around him. That can weigh heavy on anyone. It's fun to watch Maggie chip all of Frankie's armor off to get him to not just train her but to be in her corner. And that moment when given another path at a shot, She picks Frankie out of loyalty. Willing to give up a shot at a fight to follow the man she trusts to protect her. For me, this is the best Father-Daughter movie ever made. Sure it's a tear-jerker but it's healthy to have a good cry once in a while. Other Father/Daughter movies to check out: Jersey Girl ( It's funny and heartfelt. The story of a fool that realizes his daughter's love is all he needs. ) Trouble with the Curve (Another Eastwood movie you'd like. It's not a hard as MDB. ) The Intern ( Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro. A woman who lets a retiree intern into her life. De Niro steps into this relationship to reassure her weakened confidence in herself. Only to step up as a surrogate father and be that man in her corner when he sees people close to her who aren't doing what they should be doing. )

Powers209

Anything but wasabi, Bjorn. 🙂 Merry Christmas to all our Swedish subscribers! May we get to see one of your finest exports (Swede Johansson in Heartbreak Ridge) in 2025. 🎅🏻

Clarence Newman

Not sure 'Bridges..' is the one she should watch to repair her soul.

JPDotCom23

Three Eastwood movies I recommend: *ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ (1979) (Eastwood stars but does not direct) [RT=97%] (Danny Glover's first movie -- a minor role). We visited Alcatraz last year. *INVICTUS (2009) (Eastwood directs but is not an actor) [nominated 2 Oscars]. Stars Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman (as Mandella). Invictus was one of Gabor's 5 picks when he won at trivia. *PALE RIDER (1985) (Eastwood stars/directs) [RT = 93%] 5th place in the poll results. The highest-grossing western of the 1980s.

Clay F

100% Stick! As tragic as it is, sometimes it helps if you see someone that has it worse off than yourself.

Doug Fisher

Yeah I really did not want you to have to suffer through this one. I saw it when it came out and I really never want to see it again. If you are looking for a Clint Eastwood movie that will repair your soul, watch The Bridges Of Madison County. It scored fairly high in your poll but a few others (including this one) beat it out. But it is the best movie for someone who loves a love story.

Richard Moreland

Oh!! so you like to punish your self???? 🫨🫨

Björn Karlsson

She was on the TV Series Justified (not sure which season) and also the movie Instant Family.

Shawn Kildal

Well, damn, Stick. That's as eloquent as Bill Murray's speech at the Groundhog ceremony. I'm in tears over here.

Clarence Newman

Also, sad movies can often have the effect of making people who have sad lives feel heard / seen / less alone (C.S. Lewis said, "we read to know that we are not alone," and I think a lot of us experience art for the same reason). Sometimes those individuals simply want an escape into feel-good entertainment and movies can provide that by telling them a story where everything ends happily, but if those are the *only* kinds of stories that got told, then the preponderance of them could actually paradoxically end up making those people more depressed because it's like rubbing salt in the wound of reminding them yet again of what they lack in their own lives. Sometimes, dark and/or sad endings can be cathartic / therapeutic for people who are having a tough time of it.

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe next time put a winking emoji at the end because otherwise there is/was no way to decipher your OP was humorous or not. You realize that many actually feel that way... right?!

Doug Fisher

Clarence, I share your thoughts on Cassie. I too have been feeling like c**p with another chest infection! I’m just turning the corner now. But it happens nearly every year, around the holidays. For me, it’s pushing myself harder and harder to keep everyone happy (both work and personal) just trying to get to the holidays and then as I reach the finishing line I fall sick! This is now 6 out the last 10 xmases now! I think stress/anxiety can lead to a lowering of your immune system. It doesn’t matter how many vit/mins you take or heathy foods you eat, if you are stressed, so is your body and your gut can’t absorb the nutrients it needs. I know for me IBS does this. I don’t know Cassie and I’m not a doctor! But I feel she may suffer from the some of the same problems. Cassie just cares so much about what she does for others and doesn’t want to let anyone down. It can be both a blessing and a failing at the same time. I hope she feels better soon so the whole family can enjoy their Christmas together. I too will wait for the tube edit after Xmas. I’ve seen this once. Amazing movie. Swore I would never again! But I will at least watch the tube version to honour Cassie’s efforts.

Mark White

Guys, it’s called humor. Not everything is meant to be taken literally.

Brian Lowery

Also Nobody’s Fool with Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Jessica Tandy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Brian Lowery

I agree. I would much rather wait however long it takes for Cassie to be 100% healthy than have her sit through a movie for our benefit and potentially get worse. I don’t know if there is a quota of new content that she has to hit for the channel each month, but there is plenty of material in her catalog of reactions to keep us busy while she’s on the mend. Please take care of yourself first, Cassie.

Dan M

I thought this movie was good, but I think it could have been better with just a few minor adjustments. IRL, the dirty fighter would have been DQed, and Maggie would have won. This wouldn't have changed anything outside of the Mother's line "you lost" which could easily have been replaced with a mother who criticized her even when she won... "Yeah, you might have won, but only by disqualification. She still knocked you out." It would have made the journey more of a pyrrhic victory, and that's a powerful message in itself. At the very least though, it would have shown, as Cassie mentioned, that there need to be consequences for your actions. Not having any for the dirty fighter lead to a serious disconnect for me, because that's not how boxing works. There was just no really good reason to depart from reality there. Lastly, also as Cassie put it, they could have ended with at least the image of a woman walking into the diner with a letter in hand. They left that story unfinished when they didn't really need to, and finishing it wouldn't have taken anything away from the movie.

Art of Free Speech

Agreed, but I think she goes above and beyond for us sometimes. It won't kill us to wait an extra couple of days when she's real sick. I can't remember seeing her quite as sick as this.

Clarence Newman

I appreciate your sentiment but, as you would agree, it is her call. She is a big girl, and able to judge if she is "real" sick. However, I do agree that many of us work with a cold when we shouldn't. Seems to me she had cold symptoms but wasn't feeling that bad due to illness. Yet, I don't know her condition. I did hear a nagging couch occassionally. Watching a movie may have been a break for her from more demanding personal chores/kids. Yet, as you noted, it is a job -- it's work. And there was the emotional drain of the movie. I do hope she gets rest and drinks a lot of fluid.

Clay F

Skip 'to' Pale Rider, Clay?

Clarence Newman

THIS is the way.

Mike LL

For the record the Clint Eastwood directed movies Cassie has seen on the channel: Unforgiven Gran Torino Million Dollar Baby Movies Cassie has seen on the channel with Clint as an actor, or star: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly In the Line of Fire Cassie has not seen any movies on the channel directed by Clint Eastwood in which he does not act, or star, such as MYSTIC RIVER. The one I voted for, and another tough watch, but not as tough as this here BABY was. In hindsight, the directors poll could have been held off until January, but here we are with a brutal movie for Christmas Eve. But those are just the breaks on this channel. Sometimes you get a great watch, and sometimes you get the DUCK. Edit: And now after seeing the reaction, a great, great watch it was. This is just what you asked for when you started the channel, Cassie. After watching a lifetime of happy endings, the last time I checked, and I'm not a great scholar, one must realize that Shakespeare didn't get famous by writing too many happy endings. He wrote many many tragedies, and they make for enriching literature . . . and great movies, like Million Dollar Baby.

Mike LL

OK, I didn't really know what I was getting into here, I thought it was going to be a boxing movie and I know sports movies are always about more than just sports but there is a lot more to this one. And, hey, Cassie, take care of yourself. Merry Christmas to all.

Jeff

At least Clint was nominated for Best Actor.

Clay F

She could skip the 5th place Pale Rider after Outlaw Josey Wales

Clay F

She is excellent in THE AMERICANS. I love that series. THE AMERICANS (2013) (6 seasons). RT 96%. IMDb 8.4 -Best TV Shows all time = Rolling Stone #14, Hollywood Reporter #12 -18 Emmy nominations, won 4 -Golden Globe 2019 winner Best Television Series - Drama

Clay F

OK, I'm waiting for the YT edit on this one, but I've just watched the intro and outro and I feel like there's something important I need to say. Cassie! This is your JOB, and just like all the rest of us, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE SICK DAYS! I'm not even talking about the content of the movie, it's simply the fact that you're REAL sick this time and you should not be hauling yourself into the movie room just to keep us happy. We will wait for you to get better, I promise! ESPECIALLY over Christmas! I'm almost annoyed. We love getting new content, but you were in no fit state to be working when you watched this movie. Please! Take a sick day when you need a sick day! xxx

Clarence Newman

I can agree to that Clarence. The timing could have definitely been better. I am not sure why the Eastwood movies were pushed anyway as there are still a lot of Christmas movies for her to see. I am glad she watched it but yeah, sometime in the New Year might have been better. ;)

Doug Fisher

Cannonball Run!

Clarence Newman

Not sure what you're talking aboot, Phoenix. (And have you noticed that Cassie doesn't pronounce it like that? I'm not sure she's Canadian.) But now we've dragged Cassie over to the dark side, I'm hoping some cool profanity in a movie makes its way into Carly's vocabulary. When somebody puts the main character into an awkward situation, I'd love to hear Carly respond with "Oh, piss on you, Wyatt."

Clarence Newman

She is a lot tougher than she used to be, but I still wish she'd watched Josey Wales first and kept this one till after Christmas. You know, so it could ruin her New Year's instead.

Clarence Newman

2-Can. I'm going to pour some coke on your neat whiskey and suggest Eight Below (2006).

Clarence Newman

Really, Stick? I learned from Rocky that you can literally block every punch with your face but still be fairly free of brain damage at 70.

Clarence Newman

I'm with you, Scott. Marley and Me is the only film I've ever known where the lights came up in the cinema and no one got up. I'd imagine, just like me and Wifey, they were thinking "OK, I need a minute here."

Clarence Newman

And she played a great villain in the second season of Justified.

crazyivan

Better yet, she should skip Mystic River and watch Heartbreak Ridge, which at least has a light-hearted tone to it.

Clarence Newman

Aye. In honour of Cassie gutting out Million Dollar Baby, I'm going to change it up this year. I'm going to ignore my wife, eat a California Reaper cake and watch Bjorn's movie.

Clarence Newman

I look at sad movies like this... you need the dark to appreciate the light. For example, have you ever been in a really dark room and then suddenly stepped out into a bright sunny summer day? Have you noticed how it is much brighter than if you had instead been out in the day for hours? Sad ending movies are the same as they make you appreciate the happy ending more. Besides, this is an superb movie with amazing acting and directing. Cass, did you recognize the Canadian actor Jay Baruchel? He has starred in "Tropic Thunder", "Fan Boys", "She's Out of My League", and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" to name a few. If you want a tear jerker but has a little happier ending try "Phenomenon" with John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick.

Doug Fisher

Nah... she is tougher than people giver her credit for.

Doug Fisher

Does anyone one remember the Canadian Phrase that Cassie and Carly used during the “Cinderella Man” reaction video when Russell Crowe’s character got hit in the Family Jewels. It sounded strange like; “He Cased him.”

Uncle Phoenix

Oh God August Osage County. She was great in that. But what a s--show that holiday was. Lol. Great performances all around in that one.

Chris Thom

I believe Cassie will recognize her from Secretariat 😊

Robert da Spruce

P.S. If Maggie's mother seemed familiar to you, Cassie, it's because she's a marvelous actress named Margo Martindale who has appeared in the show THE AMERICANS (for which she won an Emmy) as well as movies like DAYS OF THUNDER, THE FIRM, SABRINA, PRACTICAL MAGIC, AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY and COCAINE BEAR. She's also in THE ROCKETEER, which gives you yet another reason to watch that film.

Stick Figure Studios

The woman who plays the Mom in this film is a marvelous actress named Margo Martindale who was also in the show THE AMERICANS as well as movies like THE ROCKETEER, THE FIRM, SABRINA, AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY and COCAINE BEAR.

Stick Figure Studios

Happy Holidays everyone! 🤗 Geez. a very tough movie any time of the year. But two days before Christmas? 😭 Every time I think about the Mom…😠 So good. But so incredibly sad. Wonderful reaction as always Cassie. Hope your cough has subsided. Now I’m gonna go watch something silly just to cleanse the palate Happy Holidays to everyone! (Seriously this time)

Robert da Spruce

Kinda like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg_0Smmvwbw How rude

V M

Unfortunately, this movie was spoiled for me. I went to see it in the theater, and was waiting in the hallway until the people came out, so I could go in. Two woman walked out of the theater and said, "I can't believe Hillary Swank (spoiler)". UGH. I was so upset!

Super Powered Design (Jim)

Sounds rough Clarence

V M

Me too

V M

I didnt vote for it. :P

V M

I hope you feel better Cassie. 😀🎄⛄️❄️

Ian Cano

The Outlaw Josey Wales is next Eastwood. Maybe this week.

Clay F

Surrogate families is a recurring theme in a lot of Eastwood movies.

Stick Figure Studios

He definitely seems to have a lot to say about life. He's churned out a TON of work in his career. Play Misty for Me may have been before he was ready to take more responsibility for things.

Chris Thom

That's quite a sentence. lol

Chris Thom

I’m gutted, Again. I didn’t think I was going to watch this movie again. I think I started crying after thirty minutes, and then just quietly sobbed for the rest of the movie. I hope Cassie gets to see Clint Eastwood in Absolute Power. He is good at playing the dad.

Uncle Phoenix

And that way everyone can vote for her to watch Old Yeller

2-Can

There’s others, but these are the 2 I had to wear my sunglasses out of the theater for. Never again!!!! 🤣

Scott Macaulay

I think she came really close to that once or twice.

Shawn Kildal

This movie breaks my heart, especially with how horrible her own family was to her. I just cannot stand that, and I have known people like that.

Vwlss Nvwls

Still haven't seen MARLEY AND ME, but I've heard it's good.

Stick Figure Studios

Congrats, everyone. You broke her.

Brian Lowery

And yet I learned more about boxing from this movie than I have from any of the ROCKY films or CINDERELLA MAN.

Stick Figure Studios

It's almost more sad The second time because you know where it's going and you can see Eastwood dropping hints with certain lines like "rest when you're dead" or the various shots of the stool that he would move into the ring during the fight montage.

Stick Figure Studios

An absolute masterclass all around. An incredibly tough watch but I think it was an important movie to see. I know you took a beating during this one Cassie but I'm glad you watch it. I hope you get over being sick quickly and a merry Christmas to you and your whole family.

Canadianant

Yeah, I'm thinking that maybe she should stop after OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, which is a much lighter movie.

Stick Figure Studios

One of the recurring themes you'll see throughout Clint Eastwood's filmography is that of surrogate families. You saw some of that in GRAN TORINO where Eastwood's character was disconnected from his own family but ended up finding a sort of new one in his Korean neighbors. Likewise here, Frank's grown-up daughter wants nothing to do with him (for reasons never made clear) so Maggie becomes a kind of surrogate daughter to him while Maggie, who lost her father at a young age (and the rest of her family is utter trash), finds a new father in Frankie. They become,. as Frankie says in Gaelic, "blood." To some degree, I feel like this motif is important to Eastwood because of his own life. He is one of my favorite filmmakers, a tremendous storyteller and a good actor who became a global icon, but he is not by any means a perfect person and has led a complicated life with a lot of foolish, selfish decisions. In a way, I feel like his art (not unlike that of Italian director Federico Fellini) is almost a confessional. He portrays a lot of highly flawed characters who've made tremendous mistakes and he knows about that better than almost anyone: his characters are often philandering husbands, for example, and Eastwood himself could hardly stay faithful to his wife (of which he had several) for an extended period of time. Consequently, he has a lot of different children from a lot of different women and some of them he even refused to acknowledge for much of their lives. They all seem okay with each other now (he's even used several of them in some of his movies), but there's been a lot of baggage and heartache in their histories. MILLION DOLLAR BABY was a critical and awards darling as it garnered Hillary Swank her second Oscar, Eastwood his second best picture and best director statuette (after UNFORGIVEN) and Morgan Freeman a supporting actor Oscar. I know this was a tough watch because it's heartbreakingly sad, but I find it quite revealing that at the end you said you needed to watch more Clint Eastwood movies. I suspect this is because even though it tore your heart out, you fell in love with the characters, you got emotionally invested in their story and you could tell that there was an authenticity and honesty to the drama on display in this film. This is what Eastwood excels at. He is really a remarkable storyteller and you have seen enough of his movies now to realize that. I can assure you that they are not all this sad (some are sad, some aren't), but As someone who has seen all but five of his 40 directed features, I can tell you they are all worth seeing. I Look forward to your experience of OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, a movie that I think you will enjoy much more than this one. Merry Christmas.

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe time for a Monster Squad reaction. You all know the part I'm talking about!

Rick Rodriguez

Might have to wait until after Christmas for this one. Maybe January.

Chris Thom

That's right. She sure did. It's her new go to phrase now apparently.

Shawn Kildal

I think Leaving Las Vegas would elicit an emotional response

Neighbourhood Watch Alliance

It's movie-boxing

Neighbourhood Watch Alliance

Tbh, I think Lilya 4-ever is even in the "forbidden category" for Cassie 🤔😔 It's about human trafficking, enough said 😔

Björn Karlsson

Some say the sound was repeatedly muted on Cassie's audio to edit the coughing, but we know is was to edit all the swearing really

Neighbourhood Watch Alliance

Well, that's my Christmas day sorted, Bjorn.

Clarence Newman

In this film? If so, I'm concerned Cassie is turning into a potty mouth. In Star Trek (2009) recently, she told Kirk to kick a Romulan "in the nuts."

Clarence Newman

Hmmm If you wanna challenge your self with a tough movie, I can recomend Lilya 4-ever. A swedish movie in russian... It's so sad and brutal 😔😔😔

Björn Karlsson

Just moved my response down below, Shawn. If you want to delete this one, I'll do the same with my response to it (the one up here, not down there.)

Clarence Newman

I posted this above, Shawn, but then I read your response to my original post, so I'm moving my response down here. Fighters have won titles with a disqualification quite a few times. Max Schmeling-Jack Sharkey (1930) is a prominent example, Riddick Bowe retained the title twice with DQ's against Andrew Golota, and if Mike Tyson had been champ when he fought Evander Holyfield the second time, he would've lost the belt for sure for biting Evander's ear off. Only in extreme circumstances will the commission declare the title vacant after a DQ. It usually only happens if the "winner" is deemed to have taken a dive just to get the win, otherwise it punishes the one who gets transgressed against. Roy Jones jr's DQ loss to Montell Griffin in 1997 probably SHOULD have resulted in the title being declared vacant (Griffin definitely went in the tank that night!), but nope, not even then. In this case, Osterman would've definitely lost the belt to Maggie. I suppose it's possible the commission could've declared the title vacant afterwards (not sure why), but that still doesn't explain Maggie's apology for "losing the fight". Either way, she would not have been declared the loser.

Clarence Newman

Yea this is another skip for me. Have a wonderful holiday with your family Cassie.

Alex Gorell

You know what would be an even better soul cleanser? Loaded Weapon 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! The last exclamation point was trying to escape. And no, it's not a Christmas movie, but a better soul cleanser it be :/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozx5ev96Qtk

V M

Or they strip the champion from the title and leave it vacant.

Shawn Kildal

Watching Cassie's heart be broken by one the finest movies ever made and performances ever given... Thank you Morgan Freeman, the incomparable Hillary Swank, but most of all, the genius of Clint Eastwood!

Terry Yelmene

Ok, she probably shouldn't watch 'Mystic River' then. It's not as emotional but it comes pretty close.

JPDotCom23

In case you didn't see my post, in boxing, you can win a fight due to disqualification, but it doesn't mean you are awarded the championship belt if it's a title fight. You have to win the belt by knock out or decision.

Shawn Kildal

Yeesh. Feeling a little bad we made Cassie watch this 😟

Rick Rodriguez

I just finished this and felt so sorry for Cassie; she was crying, couldn't breathe, and all stopped up. I knew this movie would break her; I would put this film in my top 10 saddest movies of all time. It's a great movie; Clint should have won Best Actor. But Best Picture, Director (Clint Eastwood), Leading Actress (Hilary Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (Morgan Freeman) is pretty impressive.

Eddie Perkins

I'll find out when I watch the YT edit, Rick, but I do remember her saying that, and I think I'd also remember if Frankie had responded with "What the hell are you talking about? They disqualified her ass and threw her in jail. You're the new champ!"

Clarence Newman

A Christmas miracle !

Rick Rodriguez

Good question. Might be Maggie being hard on herself. But I could have missed something.

Rick Rodriguez

In boxing, you can win a fight due to disqualification, but it doesn't mean you are awarded the championship belt if it's a title fight.

Shawn Kildal

I may be misremembering this, so somebody correct me if I am, but if not, there's one big problem with the plot of this movie. Osterman knocks Maggie out with a sucker punch that's thrown, like, a week after the bell, right? Yet, in her hospital bed later, I distinctly remember Maggie apologising to Frankie for "losing the fight"! I must not be remembering that correctly. Right? Osterman may have crippled her opponent to avoid being knocked out herself, but she sure as hell shouldn't have retained her title!

Clarence Newman

You should see it at least once. It's in the IMDB Top 250, not to mention won numerous Academy Awards.

Aaron Mann

Leaving Las Vegas and Derailed.

Of all the sentences I'd never thought I'd hear Cassie say, "kick her in the balls!" would rank right up there.

Shawn Kildal

A Perfect World, for sure. It's often frustrating to see a real "Cassie movie" like that one get passed over. Not saying it's cuddly, but it has a tender core that balances the tougher bits. Million Dollar Baby does not.

Clarence Newman

I don't believe that I have ever watched a sadder movie. But I keep re-watching the first half and pretend that the second half never happened. I enjoy the three main characters so much that I keep being drawn back to the movie. Did you notice that the music was almost identical to that in "Unforgiven" along with the tone of the narration. The biggest difference was that "Million Dollar Baby" had an absolutely unrelenting sad ending, whereas "Unforgiven" 's end was kind of positive with the description of his life after he moved west with his kids.

Eric Haefele

I figured she hadn't seen it. It's like watching Clint in Gran Torino or Escape from Alcatraz. It's not a movie you watch and later on ponder if you've seen it or not.

Shawn Kildal

I guess not the happy-ending kind of movie you watched before the channel. This has got to be one of the toughest reactions for you I've seen you experience. I empathize with you. While I appreciate the performances and directing, this is a movie I don't rewatch (too tough, too sad for me in my old age) -- but I made an exception and rewatched the movie along with your reaction. I shared your pain -- been a few years since I seen this movie. Won 4 Oscars: --Best Picture --Best Director (Eastwood) --Best Actress (Hillary Swank) --Best Supporting Actor (Morgan Freeman)

Clay F

She will.

Shawn Kildal

When I watched Cassie crying in the first 30 seconds of The Holdovers because they were simply singing a Christmas song, I immediately thought of how wrecked she was going to get watching this. It wrecked me too. Plus, it had the worst villains in movie history: the cheap shot female boxer and the family from hell. Clint Eastwood is so good. Don't forget Cassie, you've also seen In the Line of Fire with him. John Malkovich played the bad guy who kept changing his appearance. Hilary Swank did win best actress, Clint won best director, Freeman won best supporting actor and the film won best picture.

Shawn Kildal

Maybe one the most humanistic and heartbreaking movies ever made. Eastwood is a master.

Rick Rodriguez

I would be very curious to see a reaction for Once Upon a Time in the West. Cassie has seen and was fond of two of its stars, Henry Fonda (12 Angry Men) and Charles Bronson (Danny in The Great Escape). + My full and unconditional support for The World's Fastest Indian.

Pale rider!!!!

Pale rider!!!

V M

I've never seen this movie and the comments arent encouraging me to :P

V M

Only 2?

V M

Yeah…i think I’m going to leave this one until after Xmas!

Mark White

This is a movie I'm confident Cassie would have remembered if she'd seen it. It's been almost 20 years since I watched it, and I'm not entirely sure I'll revisit it. If I do, it won't be until January. Most of Eastwood's highly acclaimed films are heavier dramas. I wish one of his more tender works, like Invictus (which still baffles me how few votes it received), or A Perfect World, had made the cut as well. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Gábor Árki

She's planning on it

Stick Figure Studios

That will be a much more pleasant experience for her.

Stick Figure Studios

She thought she had, but said she didn't remember it... which meant that she obviously hadn't because you don't forget this movie.

Stick Figure Studios

This movie is such a tough watch. I've seen it once and never been able to go back to it. Recommend Miracle On 34th Street (1994) for a soul cleanser after this one

Katie Jackson

Came here to say this about Eastwood/Leone.

Stick Figure Studios

Wow, Cassie! You and Ben have been BUSY cranking out the content before your trip to Canada. Yes, this is a very tough watch, but so well done. After seeing this movie, I wanted to see more of Hillary Swank’s movies…if I remember correctly the only other movie I saw her in prior to this was The Next Karate Kid. Her performance just blew me away. Have a safe trip! Merry Christmas to you, Ben, and your family!

Dan M

2 movies I will never watch again: Marley & Me and this.

Scott Macaulay

This one is a no for me too. This movie is like 2 hours of watching someone drown puppies.

Shad Kanyak

I’m might give it another go in January. As I saw it when it first came out in 2004 and don’t remember to much other than other than what I’ve already said. But I’m a completely different person now regards to watching films and can appreciate some of them more now.

Dean Holt

Cassie, in your intro you said that Clint Eastwood had directed “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” He did not direct that movie. Legendary Italian director Sergio Leone directed it, along with two other westerns starring Eastwood (“A Fistful of Dollars” and “For A Few Dollars More”). Together, the trio of films has been dubbed “The Dollars Trilogy” and/or “The Man With No Name” trilogy, even though Eastwood plays a different character in each. Both the remaining films are well deserving of reactions, as are at least a couple of other Leone films (“Once Upon A Time in the West” and “Once Upon A Time in America”). PS: If you need to see something joyful and inspiring, I’d like to renew my call for a reaction to “The World’s Fastest Indian.”

Just Plain Bob

I agree, Dean. I remember the ending, of course, but that's about all I remember. I'm gonna give it another watch along with Cassie when I get a moment.

bgb1975

Nope! Not before Christmas - maybe afterwards. I’m gonna chock this one up as “Howard the Duck” voters. 😁 jk. ✨✨✨Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Everyone!!!🎉🎊🎉🎊

Ike

I said the same thing. Great movie but wouldn’t want to watch it again. Guess I’ll have to break my rule and watch it a second time.

Aaron Mann

I would have sworn that you've seen this before; I'm getting ready to watch it now. What a good movie to start the holidays with.

Eddie Perkins

Oh boy. Not this movie. I mean this as in, I have to actually think about if I'm emotionally ready. May Rain check this for after Christmas. Lol

Thats MR. Baldamort

I voted for and am eagerly awaiting "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

Bill Maurer

If you liked this one Cassie, you will love "A Perfect World". It has Kevin Costner in it as well as Mr. Eastwood! And it blows MDB away! Ya gotta watch it!

bgb1975

The main thing that just irks me about this movie is that the whole situation is just unrealistic and would never happen in a real boxing match. The other fighter would just be disqualified for those illegal hits and thats that.

Night King01

Not sure if I’m going to give this another chance, personally though it was overrated and the only thing I really remember was it just being slow and a bit dull. I get the feeling it might have only won because it won a few Oscar’s. But as it’s not a happy film it might have been better watching in January and watching a fun comedy instead.

Dean Holt

I said you'd remember if you'd seen it and now you know why. Nobody forgets this one.

djKENTO

Was hoping Cassie wouldn't watch this before Christmas because it's such an utterly heartbreaking story to watch in a festive period but if she takes away what I take away from it then her nearest and dearest ones will feel the warmth of her love a little more intensely over the next few days.

Nim

I agree Cassie, great film! But so heartbreaking! 😭 I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

Robert da Spruce

I can't belive ya'll made her watch this

GomezAddams

All Oscar winners.

Danny (Icarus)

Can we watch the 2nd place Eastwood poll winner 'The Outlaw Josie Wales'?? I'll have a big slice of old school lemon pie.🍋

Celeste McAllister

Yep, this masterpiece is one that is hard to watch again.

Clay F

Yup, it's a tremendous movie, but I never felt the need to rewatch it after it destroyed me the first time! 😭

Phil Stubblefield

For so long you thought you had already seen this! We all knew, though, you can never get this movie out of your memory, even with your film-amnesia!

Jon Johns

Oh boy. This one’s an all-timer. Absolute cinema.

Eric Miller

This is going to get ugly for Cassie 🥴
