A Christmas Carol (1999) - Full Reaction

Always about 60 percent through A Christmas Carol movies, I start wondering if the short ending of happiness will be worth all the humbug, and it is! It was so fun to see Patrick Stewart in this different kind of role. Was this one closest to the book? I think the Muppets is my fav still. PS: I got mixed up in my intro on the ones i have seen but figured it out by the end haha

A Christmas Carol (1999) - Full Reaction

Comments

Someone probably said it already but, I think the word you were trying to think of is "curmudgeon", as in a grumpy old person. Fun fact, the actor who played Fezziwig actually played the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in the Syfy Channel adaptation of Dune. Talk about a 180 degree turn from one character to another. Coincidentally, Bob Cratchet's wife was also in that version of Dune as the Lady Jessica.

BibbitduBois

I too saw it on TNT years ago.

V M

Knew it was big on TV. Thought it was NBC though.

Chris Thom

When I was at the store today, I happened to find the DVD for this movie, so I grabbed it! I'm sure I saw this movie years ago on TNT, but I'd forgotten. Great production! I think my favorite interpretation of the story is "Scrooged," but it may now be this one.

Stephen Dias

I don't think Cassie will live long enough to see one a year and get them all. I count 83 movie and TV adaptations on the Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptations_of_A_Christmas_Carol

Mike Lemon

I haven't seen a version like this one before. It was a little different than I am used to. But it was good. I have seen quite a few of them. I need to figure out how many versions there are and which is the best. Cassie you should watch a different version every Christmas until you have seen them all. Then the best version can be determined. Merry Christmas. Good job, Cassie.

Rick Williams

He clearly means the kind of fascism Lotso practiced in Toy Story 3.

Clarence Newman

Back to the 80s, Mark, that's for sure. I remember Barbara Mandrell coming out from behind the curtain in long shot and thinking 'Hmmm, she looks pretty." Then they cut to a close-up of her face and I spat my coffee out.

Clarence Newman

Sounds like a nice little stocking-stuffer, Phoenix. And if you think all that stuff is hocus pocus, you can always go down the rug route. Because sometimes that can be cool too. I remember Burt Reynolds' response at a live show when a heckler called him out for wearing a toop. He brought the guy up on stage and said, "This is my hair. You know how I know? Because I paid five f-ing thousand dollars for it!"

Clarence Newman

I don't see it on her Letterboxd list.. so we need a lobby for Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas for next year's list.

Michael Enos

Also... ICYMI.. Our favorite O Captain My Captain sings in Christmas.. https://youtu.be/xteKObnaA2c?si=BouLu-D9IDVCDvfp

Michael Enos

yes

V M

My favorite version is- The Man who Invented Christmas (2017). It’s told from the point of view of Charles Dickens attempting to write it.

Christian R

misers were known to be so frugal they even denied themselves, no coal to keep warm, a broken down house full of cobwebs and torn up curtains and bedding.

zynjams

Hi Cassie. You were spot on. That was totally Higgins from Ted Lasso

Vlad D

is that the book

zynjams

Boo to you for your unwarranted rant

V M

1843 version of a Christmas Carol

V M

Oh, got ya.

Mike Lemon

1938 version of a Christmas Carole

zynjams

when I first saw this, my friend told me it's even better if you imagine it as a holodeck novel Picard was going through

Walter

curmudgeonly ..I might now be the 12455409450th one to say it. I like this version... Patrick Stewart at the end gave us the deepest feeling Scrooge.. I have to admit I was reaching for kleenex when he arrived at his nephew's.. and especially asked Fred's wife to take him in. Yes, this was Higgins from Ted Lasso. ..also Bob Crachit was played by Richard E. Grant who was also a high ranking First Order officer in The Rise Of Skywalker. Loved this reaction..Merriest of Merry Christmases to you and the fam!! 🌟🎉⛄️🎄🎁

Michael Enos

Hi Cassie, I think the word you were looking for was: curmudgeonly. As far as my favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol, I am not sure I have a favorite, but Michael Caine is my favorite Scrooge.

Tinkerbell

Yes I know, by original, I meant the black and white version, because there is also the colorized version out there, in case she wanted to check that out.

JPDotCom23

flag on the play The song the Cratchits sing (second ghost) sounded wrong to me. The line, "the other's gone home in an ambulance," sounded too much of modern day leaking in. Well, it was (probably, after looking it up). Before 1854 it meant "field hospital," after 1854 the meaning changed to "vehicle for conveying wounded from the field," and the current meaning came about in the early 20th century. The story was published in 1843. The second meaning might be able to be stretched to cover the lyric, but I'm not convinced.

Mike Lemon

"Mickey's Christmas Carol" is a good, relatively faithful and very concise telling of the story. It was my introduction to the Dickens tale as a child.

Stick Figure Studios

"1951 ... Alastair Sims ... the original black and white version." There was at least a 1938 version staring Reginald Owen.

Mike Lemon

Can't remember if I've seen this one or not. But that poster is really making me flinch.

Chris Thom

I hear you Clarence. I’ve been a night owl since I was in my early teens, and it continued through college when me, my roommate, and a few of our friends in the building would gather in our room and have a late night movie binge. When my girls were growing up, the early evening was always family time. After 10pm, I’m free to explore movies and shows that I know my wife and girls really wouldn’t be into. That’s also when I get my time in with PIB.

Dan M

Showing your age Clarence. I suspect we are going back a bit here! To the age before 24hr service, 3 channels only and the National anthem being played, meant it was time to go to bed!😆

Mark White

There’s a special place in my heart for the Albert Finney musical, because of the way he portrays the pain and regret of his lost love. The Alastair Sim version is great, and I really love the George C. Scott portrayal. The Muppets are not my thing, but when I was a kid, I thought the Mr. Magoo version was outstanding. 😊

Michael Weiner

I, too, enjoy and love 'Scrooge' from 1951, which starred Alastair Sims. Nothing better than the original black and white version. It was released in the US as 'A Christmas Carol'. I'm not much of fan of the colorized version, tho I will watch it if it comes on.

JPDotCom23

Your post has raised some nostalgia in me, Dan. I used to do exactly that when I was living at home as a teenager. My family would got to bed at 10-10:30, so I'd have the living room to myself after that. At the time, they were showing episodes of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson on British tv, which I loved because I was into all the American movies. I fell in love with Barbara Mandrell in the cozy wee hours.

Clarence Newman

My first viewing of this story was "An American Christmas Carol" (1979) with Henry Winkler. The adjective American is important here as the story takes place in America during the Depression Era. Yet the spirit and the staves of the original are still there. I liked how the movie shows the transformation of the young Scrooge, the cemetary scene was touching, and the new Scrooge on Christmas was a pure joy. However, this (more faithful) version with Patrick Stewart is pretty good too.

René Ferland

I am 100% night owl. I do most of my viewing between the hours of 10pm and 3am. The house is nice and quiet, I dim the lights to make it cozy, and at this time of the year, with the Christmas tree lit, it’s just bliss.

Dan M

Why?…Hmmm; because I just emotionally connect with the painful compromise that workaholics make with their Work-Live balance.

Uncle Phoenix

Alistair Sim's reaction to waking up Christmas Day is, to me, unparalleled.

Nick Thousan

Love that movie. One of Bill Murray’s best performances IMO.

Dan M

Fascist symbolism?!?! The MUPPETS?!?! Are we being punked?

Dan M

We’re spending this weekend getting ready for a house full of family on Christmas Day. But watching this tomorrow night will be a great way of winding down. I’ve never seen this version, but looking forward to a first time watch with you.

Dan M

Hopefully she will watch that one next year. It was the one I always watched growing up in the 80s.

Dean Holt

I still really like this version but I do think it would have be better had they filmed an on stage performance. Just to show him in his element as a actor. I’ve also had the pleasure of watching him and Ian McKellen do No Mans Land at a theatre in Sheffield. It was incredible just to watch them live, also met them after both are very nice people and spent quite a bit of time talking to everyone in the bar.

Dean Holt

Nothing wrong with The Muppets, Mike, but I imagine some would prefer the great performances by great actors down the years, rather than the wonderful mups. It actually doesn't surprise me Cassie likes that one the best.

Clarence Newman

Really? Why?

Stick Figure Studios

Charles Dickens' original "Christmas Carol" is one of my all-time favorite books, so I've seen many adaptations of it and this is one of the more faithful ones. Stewart is great (he did a very successful one-man performance of this story). I like the way at the end he both struggles to laugh and sing hymns at first because he is so out of practice at doing both. Glad you got to see this. Even more glad that you enjoyed it. Looking forward to this reaction. Next year you should watch either the 1951 Alistair Sim movie (generally considered the definitive movie version), the 1984 TV movie with George C. Scott or the Robert Zemeckis/Jim Carrey CGI version. They're all worth seeing.

Stick Figure Studios

Probably going to watch this tomorrow, one little thing about this because Patrick Stewart is also known as a stage performer. I would have like this to have be filmed at a theatre in front of a live audience, I think it would have made it so much better. But I still really like watching it as I think he’s a fantastic actor.

Dean Holt

I am just going to say it: IF anyone starts losing their hair, the correct answer is, ROSEMARY BREW. Not Rosemary OIL. Rosemary Brew. It’s on Amazon, and it works. Because not everyone looks as good as Captain Picard.

Uncle Phoenix

Yes I agree! Everyone has their faves ofc and that's how it should be. Having said that... Cassie you have to see this one too! Doesn't need to be this year ofc but please get to it. It's another piece of film triumph!

MertzRocks

Cassie you have to see this one too! Doesn't need to be this year ofc but please get to it. It's another piece of film triumph!

MertzRocks

We see that in an episode of Doctor Who 😁

MertzRocks

Absolutely watch Excalibur sometime! Star-studded cast - see who you can spot!

MertzRocks

@Jamie- The Muppets? If so, I don't know if you're joking poorly, or if you are one of the many that the school system failed who spout the word without ever reading at the very least, The Doctrine of Fascism by Mussolini.

Mike Lemon

There's a lot of fascist symbolism in it

Jamie

Best part was Cassie with mom face, “Say humbug one more time and so help me!”.

Shad Kanyak

Mickey's Christmas Carol is still my favorite but this was enjoyable as well. It's fun if you pretend it's Picard on the holodeck lol

greggreggreg2000

This is by far the most accurate to the book. Combined with the 1984 George C. Scott (mostly accurate), it covers nearly the entire story. I love this film because it includes scenes from the book that usually overlooked, yet, sadly, I'm disappointed in Stewart's performance. This is the 4th Christmas film I watch every year. I start with the Finney musical, then the Scott version, then 'An American Christmas Carol' (1979) with Henry Winkler, then this. After that it's open season on Christmas movies.

David Patterson

Yes, that's a classic!

Stephen Dias

Oh, nice! It's been a while since I've seen this one.

Stephen Dias

It's got a nice rhythm to it.

Lemurian Jones

I like becrudgoned better

jenny from montana

What is wrong with liking the Muppet one?

Mike Lemon

A much younger version of Patrick Stewart was in "Excalibur". You should add that to your watchlist. Thanks and a Merry Christmas to all !!

Bill Maurer

I've got the rich part down. Famous, nope.

TheSingulatarian

Boo. Cassie works so hard on her channel making reactions to movies for us. Yes, she gets paid but seems to enjoy the work. She is certainly one of the most pleasant people on the internet. She is generally a good sport about most things and has a full-time job as a wife and mother. She works even when she is sick. I agree the 1951 version is my favorite, but she just hasn't gotten there yet. Ease up a bit.

TheSingulatarian

Good spot, Jamie. I brought up a list of Christmas Carol movies on Google because everyone seems to have their favourite, and I saw Michael Caine's name on there. I missed the fact that it was the Muppet Movie he was in. I have edited my original post.

Clarence Newman

I’ve watched most of versions if not all available versions, and I find them enjoyable. The book is wonderful to read with one’s family. Charles Dickens would do stage readings of the book and he’d make modifications of it all the time.

Doc Larry

Being bald is really not a problem when your rich & famous (haha). Stewart is 84 and his wife is 45, lol.

Joe

Not sure if you're joking but Caine is in the Muppet one :)

Jamie

Curmudgeonly😉.

Lemurian Jones

I liked the movie. Your reaction was good. This is the first time I have fully watched (from beginning to end) one of the several movies directed to the Dickens' Scrooge story. [I did watch Grinch (1966) multiple times as kid but that is different.] Patrick Stewart was awesome. Nuanced performance. Convincing at the miserly and then the redemption. The supporting characters were good. The CGI not that good but that not important to me for this kind of movie. In all, pleasant to watch a powerful performance by Patrick Stewart. Plus, good to enjoy a Christmas movie, which I don't watch that many.

Clay F

1984 with George C. Scott. Just watched it for this season day before yesterday.

Samuel Champ

Can't you set an upload to land at a certain time? I'm hoping so, because Ben's been sick and needs his sleep.

Clarence Newman

All these great versions of A Christmas Carol, and Cassie picks the Muppet one as her favourite. Fans of Albert Finney, Alistair Sim, Patrick Stewart and Jim Carrey are all saying "WHHAAAAAATTTTT???"

Clarence Newman

This is a good one. He did a one man show of a dramatic reading of the book at some point. I am partial to the George C Scott version.

Marcos

I'd love that too, Johnny, but It's on her Letterbox as already seen.

Clarence Newman

One thing I find funny is the way Stewart goes “ Jacoooob. Speeeeak comfort Jacob” it’s Funny how he grins

John Struzziero

Scrooge A Christmas Carol (1951) is my favorite always thought it is the most faithful to the book

Scott Souza

Alistair Sim is the definitive Scrooge for all time, like Michael Crawford is the definitive Phantom of the Opera.

N M

“Bill frecking Murray” in Scrooged is my favorite.

Uncle Phoenix

Dude. Rosemary BREW not oil. It totally works and it’s on Amazon. I know three people who have had crazy good results.

Uncle Phoenix

I saw him do his one man play in the old Vic theatre in the 90s of a Christmas Carol. Wonderful show. Patrick Stewart also did a mini series moby dick I think it's on Amazon, I haven't watched it as yet though.

rakesh

4k upscaled full version on YouTube folks https://youtu.be/6-xNKq5z5zI?feature=shared

rakesh

My favorite is the 1938 version with Reginald Owen🙂

Johnny Salinas

I'm watching your Star Trek 2009 reaction right now and it hit me. Can you watch "Warrior" with Tom Hardy ? I think it's one you'll really enjoy 🙂

Johnny Salinas

Cassie your love for Patrick Stewart gives hope to us bald men around the world.

TheSingulatarian

Yeah, it's 2:38 in the AM, and you're watching Perspectives. I'm your host Lionel Osbourne.

V M

Clay you are like my wife then she’s a night owl too. Being in the UK its about 9ish in the morning. I’m not quite so use to posts popping up at this time. It’s quite a treat on a day off😃

Mark White

Exactly.

V M

The channel posting content to patreon in the middle of the night is common. Happens to sync with me because I am typically up late and sometimes work through the night -- and then sleep till noon.

Clay F

Good version but still not as good as the 1951 version with Alistair Sim as the definitive Scrooge

William Burnham

Isn’t it like 2ish in the morning mountains time? Bit of a unusual time to post. Someone is up late?! 😴😆

Mark White

Yay. The 1951 A Christmas Carol was the best one, however. Get better Cassie.

V M
