Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for Star Trek (2009), which will premiere a bit later!
Hi, i can't find the full length reaction for this one, is it missing?

@Clay But he doesn't re-invigorate them, he turns them into dumb popcorn fodder for a mass audience, which I'll admit does initially have broad appeal, but after you've turned them into that, and used up all the hard-earned goodwill for the IP, there's nowhere else to go

@Clay - I love how you intentionally don't hear the argument so you can scream "blinded by hate".
The "old timers" are saying Trek used to be black cherry ice cream- kinda niche, but the people who love it really love it- and Abrams (and Kutzman) made Trek vanilla- nothing special, just the plain flavor everyone likes.
The same can be applied to all the "nerd culture" that became mainstream slop. Star Wars, D&D, Marvel, etc.

I will go with the 501,000 users at IMDb who gave Into Darkness an avg rating of 7.7 over your so-called actual Trekkies any day.

13. IMDb 5.5, Metacritic 43%, RT 23% (audience 24%) – ST V (1989)
The majority of established Trek fans or Trekkies like Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness (2013), and are grateful how Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness (2013) reinvigorated the franchise.
It is only a bitter and vocal tiny minority of Trek fans who whine incessantly about the reboots and JJ Abrams. Star Trek Into Darkness was voted worst Trek movie ever by actual Trekkies; The film was absolutely terrible in it's own right, and a disgrace to the Star Trek brand.
I don't 'hate' JarJar because he's successful, I dislike his films because he's the Michael Bay of his generation and it's a demonstrable fact he has been terrible for Trek and Star Wars long term. He hasn't directed anything in 5 years since the abysmal Star Wars sequel trilogy and his Bad Reboot studio is a joke

I fully expect the next JJ Abrams trek movie will reveal the first three movies were just Spock's dream after being knocked out by a Cloverfield monster.

Do your research. He was an executive producer on both "Westworld" AND the remake of "Presumed Innocent" on Apple TV+, which was an amazing show. Don't hate him because he's successful. Abrams is one of the few names that I will be willing to see a movie by without even knowing anything about the movie (Alex Garland, Nolan, Villeneuve, Panos Cosmatos). He's absolutely in-demand when it comes to rejuvenating a franchise. Want to know why "Star Trek: Beyond" sucked compared to the first two? I'll give you one guess. Look who directed the first two versus the third one.

In general, there are almost no Hanukkah movies in the style of the Christmas movie genre. First, because of the significantly smaller market, and second, because Hanukkah is a much less significant holiday in Judaism than Christmas is in Christianity or even among ex-Christians.
I haven't seen the Seth Rogen movie (The Night Before, 2015), or the Adam Sandler animated one (Eight Crazy Nights, 2002). I did see The Hebrew Hammer (2003), an uneven blaxploitation parody. I was moderately entertained, but I don't remember it well enough to feel comfortable recommending it. (In particular, I can't remember how much it relies on "in-jokes".)
But! Since the principal theme of Hanukkah is the victory of the few (Jews) against the oppressive many (Seleucid Greeks), then surely the quintessential Hanukkah movie would be 300 (2006)!
:-P :-P :-P

I know Cassie said she wished they had the original Sarek, but the guy who played him in this movie, Ben Cross, was one of the two leads in Chariots of Fire, as he was the Jewish sprinter, Harold Abraham.
Also, Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in this, and Patrick Stewart were in an excellent film together called Green Room, which Cassie probably should never see, as it might ruin Patrick Stewart forever for her, and because it is incredibly violent. Fantastic movie though.
Did Cassie recognize the actors playing the villain Nero (Eric Bana) and Bones (Karl Urban)? Karl Urban she'd know from the Lord of the Rings movies, as the long-haired horse lord of the Rohirrim, Eomer. Eric Bana was a major star for a while, and Cassie would probably at least know him from Munich, in which he was the lead character.
It seemed like she recognized Zoe Saldana (Uhura), but in case not, she's played Gamora (with green skin) in all the Guardians of the Galaxy films. John Cho as Sulu has been in a lot of stuff, but I'm not sure what Cassie might have seen. He's probably best well known for playing Harold in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. It seemed like Cassie recognized Anton Yelchin, but I'm not sure what she would know him from, maybe the romantic movie Like Crazy? Or maybe Terminator Salvation? Or Alpha Dog (with Justin Timberlake)? I don't know.

Agree that "juggernaut" may be too strong of a word. Also agree that Khan, Voyage, and ST (2009) all three were sucessful at the box office. Others (not you) harp about the reboots not performing well at the box office, which is simply not true. ST Beyond (2016) was the weakest but still made money. I think a 4th one would do well.
Box Office Adjusted For Inflation
-ST (2009). Domestic $352 mil. Worldwide $558 mil
-ST Darkness (2013). Domestic $287 mil. Worldwide $623 mil
-ST Beyond (2016). Domestic $194 mil. Worldwide $444 mil
All previous ST movies are with lower US population.
These domestic box office adjusted for inflation are excellent.
-Voyage $293 million
-Khan $242 million
These domestic box office adjusted for inflation are good.
-First Contact $172 million
-Generations $149 million
-Undiscovered Country $161 million
As you might guess, the weakest domestic box office adjusted for inflation.
-Nemesis $70 million
-Insurrection $126 million
-ST V $123 million

"Incredibly successful and profitable."
Nobody said it wasn't. Well, it probably wasn't "incredibly" profitable, but good enough.
"Are you saying that Khan and Voyage were not juggernauts?"
Yes. They were just good movies, not "juggernauts". For instance Wrath, was the number 6 movie in '82, making about 1/4 the box office of the number one move (E.T.).
Voyage was number 7, making less than half of the number one (Top Gun)
Mike Lemon
2024-12-23 02:44:13 +0000 UTC
Are you saying that Khan and Voyage were not juggernauts?
Star Trek (2009) was the seventh highest-grossing movie domestically of 2009. Incredibly successful and profitable.
Clay F
2024-12-23 02:22:54 +0000 UTC
Now consider the U.S. population was 2/3 what it is now and you will see, like I said in the other thread, Khan and Voyage are comparable domestically. 2009 was not a "juggernaut" like you imply.
As for the international box office, the China market wasn't really a thing in 1982.
Mike Lemon

The Star Trek re-boots were box office juggernauts. JJ Abrams reached a larger audience. Star Trek (2009) sold more tickets at the box office than any previous ST movie. Also, Star Trek (2009) received the highest IMDb rating by users (and the most critical acclaim) of any Trek movie.
*Star Trek (2009)
Domestic Box Office = $257,730,000
-(adjusted for inflation = $351,555,000)
Worldwide Box Office = $385,680,000
-(adjusted for inflation = $557,884,000)
*Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Worldwide Box Office = $95,800,000

-(adjusted for inflation = $292,901,000)
Worldwide Box Office = $133,000,000

That's a good idea, Joe, but I need to add one provision. In the interests of closure for Cassie, she should definitely watch Season 3 of Picard. If she does that, she'll have had a nicely rounded experience within the storylines she's experienced.
Once she's watched Picard, she could then put up a poll which has a simple Yes or No option. "Do you want more Trek on the channel or not?"
I'm a fan so I would love to see all kinds of Trek on the channel till the end of time, but beyond Picard Season 3, I'm really ok with the majority vote.

50:57 Quite right! You can enjoy them all! Who is to say which is best? [Quick search.] For example, my favorite Kirk is played by Evan Stone! :-P
This Sarek is played by Ben Cross, whom you saw in Chariots of Fire as the Jewish 100-m sprinter, and whom you could also watch in the Arthurian movie First Knight (1995).

JJ Abrams definitely reached a larger audience then did the previous "long episode" format. At the box office, Star Trek (2009) dwarfed previous Trek movies. Also, Star Trek (2009) received the highest IMDb rating by users (and the highest critical acclaim) of any Trek movie.
Further, the majority of established Trek fans or Trekkies like Star Trek (2009) and also are grateful how Star Trek (2009) reinvigorated the franchise.

Clarence's comment below reminded me of this in your reaction that stood out.
Half the time you tell a character to say I love you, they don't say it. But here, Hemsworth (George Kirk) knocks it out of the park. Immediately after you tell him to say I love you, Hemsworth expressively says: "I love you so much, I love you [crashes/dies] ." Not only did he say it, but his last words.

That was always going to take a new production team, Ivan. The TNG movies were produced and written by Michael Okuda, Brent Spiner, Rick Berman and Peter Lauritson etc, who had all worked on the series, so they were always going to feel like extended episodes. Traditionalists like me don't care a jot about that, but for Trek to feel truly "big screen" again (as the TOS ones did), it needed a totally different team at the helm.
Clarence Newman
2024-12-21 11:59:25 +0000 UTC
As much as I hate the new timeline of Star Trek movies - they have definitely gotten better after JJ Abrams took over. They finally realized more than hard core Trekkies will watch now that the 'long episodes' of previous trek movies were replaced by more action oriented Star Wars type movies.

This is such a crock, and as a Star Trek traditionalist who likes these films but doesn't see them as real Trek, I really must protest that Kirk's dad was played by Chris Hemsworth. As soon as Cassie realised who he was, she was a fan of the film, and when he sacrificed himself to save everybody, she turned into a pile of jello like the co-pilot in "Airplane". Two touchdowns behind, our quarterback knocked out of the game by an illegal hit, and we're only five minutes in!
In my house, the dialogue, as George Kirk flew to his certain death, pretty much went like this:
Cassie (crying): "Say I love you."
Hemsworth: "I love you so much."
Cassie (hyperventilating): "Holy crap!"
Me (exasperated): "C'maaaaaahnn!!
Cassie really needs to go back and watch some more TOS and TNG now. It should only take about 30 or 40 episodes to counteract The Hemsworth Effect.

Glad you said that, Clay. It's not a consensual kiss, it's one that's forced on Kirk and Uhura by cruel, telekinetic aliens. Kirk doesn't even pucker his lips. He presses them against Uhura's mouth and looks over at the aliens in defiance of what they're making him do.
There's a nice little subtext to that scene though, because Uhura is scared and Kirk is trying to comfort her. She tells him of the times on the Enterprise when she was frightened and his calm voice and strong presence would make her feel better. He is trying to resist, even though it's Kirk and he would doubtless have been happy to kiss Uhura any day of the week, and that's about respect. It's a sweet moment between them, which is only enhanced by the fact that Kirk doesn't allow himself to give in to, or enjoy, the kiss.
The first interracial kiss on tv? No. But a great moment of respect and affection between a person who happens to be white and a person who happens to be black? Absolutely yes.

I know it’s been said in this thread before…but you *definitely* have to try out Strange New Worlds. Because, if you think Uhura is Spock’s secret true love…she might be only the *third*best!!!
I’d even put Strange New Worlds as the next thing to watch after the JJ Abrams movies, because it ties in so closely with the Original Cast crew, relatively speaking.
Then do Voyager (in the same way you did TNG), and then please enjoy Picard.

zachary quinto is the actor playing Spock. If you have never seen it I highly recommend watching Heroes. It was a tv show about people developing super powers. Quinto's character was the Big Bad of season 1. He discovered he could gain other people's powers by killing them, removing their brains (and it was rumored/debated) and eating the brains. He was very powerful and very scary in the role. And on a sad note, Anton Yelchin who played Pavel Chekov in this and the rest of the movies to date, died. He got trapped between his jeep and a brick pillar in a freak accident. We still miss ya Anton. Rest well.

Voyager = Jeri Ryan is hot. Seems like I remember the series taking a little heat bringing her on mid-series as if an effort to boost ratings with an attractive female form. Would be good prep for Picard S3.
DS9 is excellent. Watch for the performances. Good acting. Good writing. Has plenty of action, but the show is really about social issues and inspires philosophical discussion. I think Cassie would like it. The issue is we need the experts here to suggest how to watch DS9 with an average of say 7 episodes per season. Maybe go light on S1 and S2 so to increase number of episodes in later seasons?

The last five or six episodes of Enterprise are AMAZING. I didn't hate the rest, but I wouldn't go rewatch it either. But those episodes... ♥️

Indeed, but don't let Cassie think Kirk was forcing himself, there was another force, forcing him against his will.

"Kick him in the nuts!" - something I never expected to hear Cassie say. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

2009 st is a really good new take on the characters. It’s officially part of a new timeline created by the timetravel at the beginning so both Star Trek timelines occurred in the franchise. If you watch discovery they mention the forked timeline in one of the later season episodes

I watched TNG, DS9, Voyager as they aired -- loved all 3.
--Awesome for the time that Voyager has a female captain.
I like Picard S3 (and some of Picard S1). I had a hard time making it through Picard S2. I couldn't get into Enterprise or Discovery, but willing to give Enterprise another try. A year or two ago, I watched a couple of episodes of SNW and liked the production but haven't given SNW a chance.
My personal ranking:
1. TNG
2. TOS
3. DS9 (awesome)
4. Voyager (Captain Kathryn Janeway)
5. Picard S3
6. SNW (giving this a try)
Star Trek series ranked by IMDb user rating below.
1. Picard S3 (2023) 8.8
2. TNG (1987–1994) 8.7

4. Strange New Worlds (2022-present) 8.3
5. DS9 (1993–1999) 8.1
6. Voyager (1995–2001) 7.9
7. Picard S1 (2020) 7.6
8. Enterprise (2001-2005) 7.6

10. Discovery (2017-2024) 7.0
11. Picard S2 (2022) 6.6

Star Trek Voyager next? It’s fun and not as heavy as Deep Space Nine.
I don’t think she’d do well with DS9. Not saying it’s bad, just not as fun or “planet of the week” like Voyager.

I love this movie, but… for being so logical and technologically advanced, why didn’t the Vulcans have a planetary defense system?
A strange ship parks itself next to the planet, starts shooting a beam that’s destroying their planet, and the Vulcan response is to go into the caves, hold their arms up and start chanting? 🤦🏻♂️
No Vulcan migs to shoot down the planet killing metal hose that was sent down? No ground to air missiles to hit the drill?
If this happened here on earth, we’d Top Gun this thing and send Tom Cruise and ALL the fighter jets to blow it up.
That being said, I still enjoy this movie quite a bit. 😁😂
Great casting.

Was revolutionary being shown on TV because interracial.
Yet, a "forced" kiss, right? -- forced by others. Not like the "willing" kisses between Spock and Uhura in this movie.

Kirk and Uhura...Shatner and Nichols first interracial kiss on TV...from an episode you never watched, overall, not a good episode. But it's part of Star Trek history.

I really enjoy watching this movie. And yes the casting is spot on, they are enough of their own versions and yet familiarly like the originals without looking like they’re doing impressions.

The OG Sarek - Mark Lenard...died a long time before the 2009 movie. Remember Cassie Next Generation was 1987-1994.

I love this movie as a stand alone Star Trek, but there are a few problems with it. James T. Kirk was the YOUNGER Kirk brother, his older brother was Samuel. That's the main one, and the rest are minor, but no one but me seemed to notice the anomaly. I'm so glad you're enjoying your Star Trek journey, Cassie! I grew up with TOS, and I'm happy to see new fans come along in your generation.

It's incredibly uneven in terms of storytelling in my opinion, but it is fun and I think she would enjoy it. But we're going to have a break from Star Trek after these movies.

Yeah that's definitely possible. Maybe she's the rare Trekkie who simply likes absolutely everything Trek and thinks there's no such thing as bad Trek. But the general consensus is definitely that Into Darkness has a strong case as the worst Trek movie. My guess is most people would say it's between that and Star Trek V.

once again I'm gonna say it, Strange New Worlds... it's a prequel to the OG series but done in this high budget clean action style. I'd love that as a reaction. You're gonna go nuts for the new Captain Pike and Spock...
