Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "The Shop Around the Corner" which will premiere shortly. I watched this one last year but it never got an edit until now! Enjoy!

[YT Edit] The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Comments

James Stewart really did age a ton during the war. Looked about 20 years older in It's a Wonderful Life.

Chris Thom

Always hilarious when a person thinks they know what a word means and it's wrong. 😆 I know it seems hard to talk to a female person like an adult, without catch phrases substituting for your thoughts, but you'll get there eventually.

YodatheHobbit

Yeah, I went with the full reaction when I watched the other day.

Stephen Dias

Cassie, i do love the raspy voice, as others have said, but I'm sorry ur sick and feel better soon. It sucks being sick during the holidays.

Beth Brown

yeah, because the last thing the folks want is for Cassie to watch a good movie.

zynjams

Yeah. Beat them, insult them, strip them down to nothing. That's what a real man would do, right Joe?

Clarence Newman

It's 389 on the Popcorn Request app, so very unlikely to get watched anytime soon, unless she does a PPOTM.

Joe

Jesus Christ you simps are nauseating

Joe

She does cycle through the emotional gamut with a quickness. It's pretty impressive.

Chris Thom

Welcome

David Freese

Actually, I consider oldies pre-1960s because it was the 1960s where films started to look modern. Each to their own, but there are too many great modern films in the 1960s to exclude them with the oldie line.

Clarence Newman

Deeming a movie an oldie should be relative to the current date. So if pre-1960 movies were considered oldies in 2010, in 2020 pre-1970 movies would be considered oldies.

V M

If Hungary ate Turkey is Chile safe?

V M

hopeful

zynjams

No no no. If she's anything like my wife she'll be terrible at taking compliments about her looks. Face like a bucket, I say. Plus she's got them bug eyes. Cassie! Sorry about the bug eye thing. I'll be in my office.

Clarence Newman

With Cassie's amazing personality, empathy, and star power charisma, yeah...others will suffer in comparison (haha). And why does she have to be so freaking beautiful? I mean, what is that all about (haha).

Joe

100% agree.

John Liebling

I have a Hungarian customer, so this is not a problem for me. She gave me a lovely compliment in Hungarian just the other day: "Te egy idióta vagy," she said. "Akinek a Burger Kingnek kellene dolgoznia." It means "You are my favourite supplier, and I would like to buy you lunch if you're not too busy."

Clarence Newman

The orignical Bad News Bears is one of my favorite movies. As real as it gets not just about kids and youth sports, but the suburban world in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Above Average Dave

I have a headache. lol

Chris Thom

For a moment there when Cassie starts talking about the sicknesses, I thought this was a new reaction. But then I realized it's from a year ago. Last year, this was such an unexpectedly enjoyable experience that I’m planning to watch the full-length reaction again over the holidays. It might be the closest I’ll ever get to seeing Cassie react to a Hungarian movie, and it was entertaining to hear her wrestle with pronouncing the names. Hungarian is not an easy language with a whopping 44 letter alphabet, many acute (á, é, í, ó, ú), double acute (ő, ű), umlaut (ö, ü), or two/three character letters (cs, dz, dzs, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, zs). But if someone wants to try here is a pronunciation challenge: Beginner: - tavasz (spring) - hosszú (long) Challenging: - barátságos (friendly) - csütörtök (Thursday) Very challenging: - fülemüle (nightingale) - elkülöníthetetlenség (indivisibility) Extremely difficult: - cipőfűző (shoelace) - fütyülő (whistling) - megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért (for your repeated pretending to be undesecratable) As a final challenge, some tongue twisters: - Fekete bikapata kopog a patika pepita kövén. - Mit sütsz kis szűcs? Tán sós húst sütsz, kis szűcs? - Répa, retek, mogyoró, korán reggel ritkán rikkant a rigó. For the accurate pronunciation, you can listen to them here, choose Noemi for the best results: https://play.ht/text-to-speech/hungarian/

The Hustler seems too new to be included in this post (pre 1960 is when a film becomes an oldie as far as I'm concerned), BUT......!!! Since you've raised the subject, V, here's my penny's worth: Cassie loves sports movies (which this kind of is) She is also very good friends with Tom Cruise Tom Cruise is in The Color of Money (1986), which is the sequel to The Hustler and a brilliant film Cassie and Carly would enjoy immensely. In order to get to The Color of Money, she first needs to watch The Hustler (1961) Seems like a no-brainer to me, so I'm expecting it on the January schedule. Am I right or am I right? Right? Right? Right?

Clarence Newman

I've noticed something about Cassie when she's watching these black and white oldies - especially ones that contain actors she already knows and likes. It's a sense of wonder and delight that paints itself across her face like a montage of seasons. She can go from a smile to a look of confusion to sympathy to laughter all in the space of a few seconds and it is so fun to watch her face when it's happening. Why is she the best reactor on the internet? Because she just is, that's why. The others have the debilitating handicap of not being Cassie.

Clarence Newman

Yeeha. If Cassie's going back and having YT edits done for her Patreon only stuff (great idea for when she's all sickly and a bit behind), then it's only a matter of time before we get Batman '89! Ooh, and The Apartment. And The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing. And and and..... Oh no.... "And and bloody and??" "What? Do you think the exclamation point should go at the end?" "I think it should go up his arse." Sorry, couldn't resist.

Clarence Newman

I liked it better than sleepless in seattle myself

V M

She gets that one requested quite a bit. Would think it'll be on the channel eventually.

Chris Thom

Really appreciate your endorsement of the movie, but if you could edit your comment deleting the spoilers I'd be very thankful. I really, really don't want her to go in thinking of it through the expectation and understanding of what you've outlined. People should never feel like they know ahead of time all a movie has or doesn't have to offer. They shouldn't have it nutshelled in their mind ahead of time- They should be living the moments with the characters, feeling that their future is as unpredictable as life. And I also happen to disagree with the way you've framed what transpires in the film. Please, this is the film I most want her to see, and I really want her to see it without spoilers. Can you do me a favor and edit your post?

Patreot

the majestic, a modern movie done like a 1940s classic starring Jim Carey

zynjams

It’s no Sleepless in Seattle but it’s very good

Cole Jennett

The Hustler!!! There's a romance in it :P

V M

I like that movie.

V M

Frank Morgan who plays Mr. Matuschek is also the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz.

TheSingulatarian

Amazing that everyone speaks perfectly accented English in Budapest, Hungary.

TheSingulatarian

Well, either that or The Bad News Bears (probably better for baseball season) or Going My Way

2-Can

The Philadelphia Story one of the all-time great screwball comedies starring Jimmy Stewart, Cary, Grant and Katherine Hepburn what more could you want?

Thomas Thompson

Really is a trope for characters in modern movies to curl up together and watch an old movie. Usually in romance-tinged movies. I think it's a way for the directors to give nods to the classics that inspired them. Also wonder if the studios like it because it's a free ad for their catalogues.

Chris Thom

Inspired me to watch You’ve got Mail again😊

Cole Jennett

Judy Garland and a Christmas Classic.

William Brownlee

I like this better: it's more streamlined, and, for me, has a less contrived set of plotlines. I love the whole cast in "Summertime", especially and including lovely Buster Keaton. But this one, for me, has a better flow, and I love the intimate setting and the lived in tone that Lubitsch gives this little shop.

Maria Torres

And "To Be or Not To Be".

Maria Torres

One of my early Lubitsch, and I loved it.

Maria Torres

Several of us have been suggesting this one to her since she loved both GRUMPY OLD MEN movies.

Stick Figure Studios

Second the motion!

Maria Torres

You are not wrong!

Mike LL

Watch "The Odd Couple" next please :)

justin swan

The Cyd Charise, Fred Astair version of Ninotchka is called "Silk Stockings.". It is a musical. I think my favorite number from that one is "Stereophonic Sound".

TheSingulatarian

If you can fit in Meet Me in St. Louis" this year I think you would really enjoy it. Nothing earth shattering happens. We just spend a year with an upper middle-class family and a light romance happens between one of the daughters and the boy next door. Judy Garland sings a few songs including a Christmas classic and little Margaret O'Brien nearly steals the film from Judy Garland. It does not get more tender than this. Highly recommended.

TheSingulatarian

Cassie loves romance, she's never experienced a movie like Oklahoma. Beautiful voices of Jones and Macrae sets the romantic environment throughout the movie.

John Liebling

The Carole Lombard and Jack Benny movie--not to be confused with the Mel Brooks movie. ;-)

Shadowlord

Good movie one I haven't seen.

Tim C

"NINOTCHKA,* a romantic comedy from the same director,. is a must.

Patreot

The director of this film, Ernst Lubitsch, is a director's director, revered by many great directors throughout cinema history for "the Lubitsch touch.* And "The Shop Around The Corner" is considered one of the most important and influential romantic comedies in the history of the genre. Also, speaking of Christmas Classics, I really think you'll enjoy "MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS." it's far and away the greatest of the films listed in the Christmas poll, as well as the one you're most likely to like. So really hope you (and Carly, ideally) get to it next December if not this year.

Patreot

Also TO BE OR NOT TO BE

Stick Figure Studios

That would be great. Also TO BE OR NOT TO BE.

Stick Figure Studios

I recommend both the Melvyn Douglas, Greta Garbo Ninotchka and the Cyd Charise, Fred Astaire version of Ninotchka

Monte Durbin

I would love for Cassie to see the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch classic TROUBLE IN PARADISE. Now that would be a dream reaction!

Mike LL

Ah, ok, that makes sense, thank you.

Stranger2Reality

She watched this last year so to fill in a space while they finish the other 3 like she did with I believe White Christmas last year

David Freese

"The Lubitsch Touch" refers to the director's unique method of bringing meaning and humor to very subtle moments. However, no other director in cinema history has been able to reproduce this skill. Here's a great webpage showing how different film historians try to define "The Lubitsch Touch": http://lubitsch.com/the-lubitsch-touch.html#/. Be sure to check out Billy Wilder's description in the video at the bottom.

Shadowlord

The Shop Around the Corner, In Good Ole Summertime and You've Got Mail are all same movie just made different decades. All great movies.

Randy Schuh

Glad you're reacting to this classic.

Paul Gerth

I liked "In the Good ole Summertime" better too

Monte Durbin

This is probably Ernst Lubitsch's most well-known movie. However, if you are a fan of "The Lubitsch Touch," I highly recommend "Ninotchka" and "Trouble in Paradise"

Shadowlord

After watching this, I really beg of you to watch the MGM musical remake "In the Good ole Summertime" starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson with a first time appearance by Judy and Vincent Minneli's baby daughter Liza Minneli! BTW, do you recognize Mr. Matuszcheck in this film. I'll give you a clue. In another film, he says, "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."🤔

Monte Durbin

Oh, nice! I love it when Cassie reviews the classics! It's been a while since I've seen this movie.

Stephen Dias

Great to see this reaction getting a YouTube edit. I hope you check out more Lubitsch films in the future.

Jake McNulty

Where did this come from? I thought this week was supposed to be The Holdovers, Mission Impossible and Star Trek?

Stranger2Reality

Oh heck yes, thanks for reacting to this, Cassie!

Patreot

Not a bad movie, but definitely low on my list of Jimmy Stewart movies. Too much drama. I liked the modern remake better.

William Brownlee

It's been a hot minute,almost forgot about Jimmy 🔥

Celeste McAllister

I am so happy to see this reaction!!

Robert Jewell

Jimmy Stewart, a legend the definition of a movie star
