Directors Poll

Ok I looked too haggard tonight to get on a video of a live drawing so you are just going to have to believe me these were randomly selected from a list of 65 directors spanning all decades! The winning director will get a follow up poll of their movies (that I haven't seen) We will definitely do more of these as there are so many directors to feature!

Ps-official update post coming tomorrow, but this week on patreon will be the holdovers, mission impossible 7 and star trek 2009!

Comments

I'd like to see a director's poll be a regular monthly feature.

RandyCC

Unironically hated by Godzilla fans, who refer to that version of Godzilla as Gino - Godzilla in name only.

Richard Maurer

@bgb1975 Bruce McGill? 😉

JAKH

That's because all three were apprentices of the great Orson Welles. Among cineasts, they are known collectively as The Magnificent Andersons.

Happy Hanukkah

Gotta go with "A Perfect World" if only because another one of the PiB-favorite leading men is in it alongside Clint Eastwood.

bgb1975

@NathanJasper And VM's post is exactly why I called it underappreciated. A lot of those who disagree with Kyle never actually bothered to watch the movie before criticizing it. Eastwood was very careful to include in the movie only those events that were not disputed. He left out any that were in doubt, but it never fails that keyboard warriors will critique without actually watching it themselves. Most never read the book either, just took at face value what they heard on legacy media without stopping to consider that the media itself may have an ulterior motive to try and knock down anyone involved in the GWT because of their own coastal soy political biases. Same reason that they knock "Lone Survivor", "Zero Dark Thirty", and "Patriots Day".

JAKH

+1

V M

Chris Kyle was a liar. Research him.

V M

I wouldve voted for Kazan.

V M

is American Sniper underappreciated? It was nominated at the Oscars

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Then we can always throw in Paul Thomas Anderson in to make things even more confusing. Lol. I've been getting these three mixed up for years.

Chris Thom

"A Face in the Crowd," made be appreciate Elia Kazan, but Andy Griffith also really impressed me. I was so used to seeing him play a jovial character, like Sheriff Taylor. There is some of that, but then, it takes a dark turn.

Stephen Dias

Paul WeS Anderson, that's what I said. The famed director of The Grand Budapest Resident and The Darjeeling Horizon*, and whose wife starred in the TV show Banshee. * Based on a Robert Ludlum novel, obviously.

Happy Hanukkah

Paul WS Anderson. Not Wes Anderson. lol

Chris Thom

Great but underappreciated films directed by Clint Eastwood: "Flags of Our Fathers" (2006) *WW2 True Story* "Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006) *WW2 True Story* "American Sniper" (2014) *True Story* "Absolute Power" (1997) mystery/suspense, all star cast "A Perfect World" (1993) crime/suspense "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) western "The Eiger Sanction" (1975) suspense/espionage "Pale Rider" (1985) western "Sully" (2016) *True Story* "Blood Work" (2002) detective/suspense

JAKH

Opie Cunningham

Cole Jennett

I just assumed she has - will be shocked if she hasn't. If not, that needs to be numero uno on her list.

David Collins

It's a director's poll. Not a producer's poll. I think you guys are seriously underestimating how responsibile for the finished product Don Siegel's direction of DIRTY HARRY is (even a cursory examination of the craft of the film compared with Siegel's other movies demonstrates this). That's why he gets the screen credit and why, as much as I love it and would like to see Cassie react to it at some point, it's really not appropriate for this poll.

Stick Figure Studios

I think Clay is of the opinion that Cassie can handle anything.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't believe she has.

Stick Figure Studios

And let's not forget, most of Ron Howard's movies have Clint in them.

Clarence Newman

I rest my case! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Yeah she married her director from Resident Evil franchise.

Chris Thom

Or, more affectionately, just "Ope" maybe.

David Collins

You mean Opie?

Stephen Dias

* I stand corrected. I couldn’t make half hour with that version.

(Nolo)finwe

Anyone know if Cassie has seen Bridges of Madison County. Clint Eastwood acted and directed.

bknsty14

Ketchup on a hot dog is for children. Mustard, onions and sport peppers with a pickle on the side. From Chicago, by the way, where the best hot dogs are.

bknsty14

Pale Rider, if you please

Clay A

Letters from Iwo Jima is the better of the two and I don't feel like you are missing much by skipping Flags of Our Fathers

D

@Chris -Grape jelly on a hot dog is ok then?

Richard Maurer

I mean Whoopi Goldberg ? I rest my case

(Nolo)finwe

The worst enterprise Captain on the worst Star Trek series TNG

(Nolo)finwe

This poll definitely didn't throw Clint any curves. He might not be running away with it quite so much if it had Howard, Scorsese or Spielberg on it. Watch those three all get on the same poll...

David Collins

These were random picks from loads of directors, David - therefore a crapshoot. Richie will get his turn.

Clarence Newman

Cry Macho, The Mule and Gran Torino were all acting/directing double ups. There may be others I am missing.

David Collins

That's one of the few Clint Eastwood movies I've never seen. Would be awesome if Cassie watched it.

David Collins

He directed more than 1 segment of the movie and was also billed as a producer so I think Dirty Harry should be on the plate.

David Collins

@Chris Thom - Do you feel lucky?

David Collins

I'm a little put out that Ron Howard didn't get on this poll, but I'd have still voted for Clint. Glad Clint foiled the RNG process because he belonged on the first poll of this nature.

David Collins

Whaddayamean?! WeS Anderson met Milla when directing her in Hotel Chevalier, alongside Jason Segel!

Happy Hanukkah

And the one set in India. Forget what it's called.

Chris Thom

Think The Royal Tenenbaums might still be my favorite.

Chris Thom

Oh dang I forgot about that one. Second that suggestion.

Chris Thom

Oh no way I didn't know she directed that! Loved that one as a kid.

Chris Thom

Are you sure you're talking about Cassie, Clay?

Clarence Newman

Willing to bet more than half of the population puts ketchup on their hot dog. It's a free country. Put whatever you want on it.

Chris Thom

Love ketchup on a hotdog, but it makes sense because I’m also a psycho.

Richard Maurer

+1 for The Accused. Cassie would appreciate the movie. Also, Leaving Las Vegas is awesome -- watched many times -- Nicolas Cage won Best Actor Oscar. Cassie would like the tenderness of how those two leads connect and accept each other no matter their situations. Cassie could handle The Accused and Leaving Las Vegas just fine, and would likely find both entertaining or at least relevant. She said she liked the awesome Outlander TV series, which has much worse content. ENews on Outlander: "the most graphic and disturbing .... ever to air in the history of television."

Clay F

I totally understand what you’re saying about the retributive aspect of those kinds of films. Although I’m not a fan of “Last House On The Left” or “I Spit On Your Grave” or any of the other litany of rape revenge flicks of the 70s, they didn’t affect me nearly as much as “The Accused.” Part of that was that the acting just wasn’t as good, so it was easier to stomach the scenes of sexual violence. But it was also the fact that the backs of the VHS boxes promised bloody retribution against the offenders. And boy, did they deliver.

Just Plain Bob

@Bob - Ketchup is all I eat on a hot dog (well, and cheese). Both mustard and onions make me want to vomit.

Mike Lemon

She (they) would love Bridges for sure.

Carol Rocha

I still can’t find “Mystic River” on the channel, either. It’s so hard for me to believe she watched it off channel. lol. Unless she didn’t know what she was in for. It’s a great movie.

Carol Rocha

It's why I can't rewatch Leaving Las Vegas or Derailed. "Those scenes" are bad enough, but when there's no retribution, it affects me way more than it should. The Accused is an entire film about that very thing.

Clarence Newman

Indeed. I believe so as well

Carol Rocha

He is not, Milla is married to Paul WS Anderson. A way worse director.

Aaron Fortier

Clarence, I remember watching The Accused on VHS with friends when it was first released to that format (my girlfriend at the time worked at a mom and pop VHS rental store, so we watched lots of stuff for free). When it got to THAT SCENE it was so disturbing that I got sick to my stomach and we had to quit watching and switch to something much lighter. Sometimes a movie can be too effective.

Just Plain Bob

As with most things, Harry is right. Acceptable toppings on a hot dog include mustard, onions, even relish or chili. But ketchup? Only a stone cold psychopath would put ketchup on a hot dog.

Just Plain Bob

I think Cassie should do what she wants to do, just providing you with some context , take it or leave it.

Jimmy Stewart

Yup. R*pe is actually a surprisingly (almost distressingly) common element in a lot of Eastwood films, but it gets a uniquely nasty treatment in that movie. Just an ugly film (visually and thematically) with every line of dialogue and story beat a total cliche. The best I can say about it is that the stuntwork is spectacular.

Stick Figure Studios

Do you think Cassie should just watch that one scene then? That'll be a short reaction video.

Stick Figure Studios

With some of them playing themselves.

Stick Figure Studios

Anyone who has seen the rendition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL that stars Guy Pearce as Scrooge would never refer to the Patrick Stewart version as "the worst one."

Stick Figure Studios

I get it but Clint Eastwood also directed a segment of Dirty Harry , during the suicide jumper scene, though he went uncredited

Jimmy Stewart

He did direct this one: "...having to wade through the scum of this city, being swept away by bigger and bigger waves of corruption, apathy and red tape? Nah, that doesn't bother me. Ya know what does bother me? Ya know what makes me really sick to my stomach? Watching you stuff your face with those hot dogs. Nobody, I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog."

bgb1975

ugh ! I knew it . the worst one . She's blinded by the next generation and he's the worst Enterprise captain . but she likes him ... Inexplicable. LOL. Thanks man

(Nolo)finwe

Clint,definitely Eastwood!

Celeste McAllister

I suspect the closest you’d get is Lasse Hallstrom.

Marja

And specifically for Cassie, I think she would very much enjoy A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. But you’ve also got Gentleman’s Agreement and A Face in the Crowd to chew on.

Marja

Subterranean, I've been told 😁

Above Average Dave

Ivan. The "corny" remark was about what I wrote initially. I replaced it with something different because it was "too corny". You'll probably have the original in your Inbox so feel free to delete. 🙃

Clarence Newman

The version of A Christmas Carol starring Sir Patrick Stewart, aka Jean Luc Picard, aka JLP

Dave

It's long, but with great characters - including UGA, the University of Georgia's (ugly little) mascot, a voodoo priestess and other strange ones...all set in a gorgeous city.

crazyivan

Corny? It's freaking Savannah, Georgia and all the characters that reside there. Stand the "little fella in the glasses"?, most of us can't...thank God. I prefer my leading men to be just that...a leading man.

crazyivan

What did she mean Christmas Carol with JLP ?

(Nolo)finwe

Cassie might be lulled by the title of this one. It's NOT cuddly in the slightest!

Clarence Newman

Yes!

Carol Rocha

If you don’t remember this one, chances are you haven’t watched it. 😊 It’s very memorable.

Carol Rocha

I knew it was on the list but I doubt she watched it off channel. And I can’t find it on Patreon.

Carol Rocha

I almost feel sorry for Wes Anderson, but then I remember he's married to Milla Jovovich!

Happy Hanukkah

Wait until she breaks out the "Wesley Wales Anderson"!

Happy Hanukkah

Ingemars sister's name was Margareta 🤔🙂

Björn Karlsson

It's funny how no one ever mentions The Accused when they're discussing Jodie's body of work. She even got an Oscar for it. Problem is that the subject matter is so distasteful, it's kind of a one-and-done watch for anyone who's seen it. Definitely not a Cassie movie.

Clarence Newman

Just not the overwatched ones like Willard Huyck. Although Best Defense is an unappreciated classic.

Clarence Newman

Objection! Argumentative!

Clarence Newman

Ah yes. I was trying to think of Aragorn or Legolas or Gimli saying that in the heat of the quest and it didn't sound right.

Clarence Newman

I LOVE The Rookie! Wait.....is that the one with the most cringey sex scene of all time?

Clarence Newman

My brother's called Dave. It's a very low bar.

Clarence Newman

Still haven't seen that, just wanted to watch it because of the awesome title.

rakesh

There are plenty of movies Jodie Foster has starred in that I would recommend (some of which you've seen)— Nell, Panic Room, Anna & the King, Contact, Summersby, Maverick—but she's not really known for her directing. Damien Chazelle has done some notable work, but has only directed five movies. Roland Emmerich's movies are fun, but increasingly ridiculous. I can see why Clint Eastwood would (wood would?) be leading in the poll. Not only has he directed more movies, they are award winning films worthy of high praise.

D. T. Nelson

The only movie I can think of directed by her is Little Man Tate. She's not really known for being a director. Movies she has starred in are much more well known than the handful she's directed.

D. T. Nelson

Mom loves that movie. She's also obsessed with Prince of Tides. Curious if Cassie or Carly would like that one.

Chris Thom

I can only only think of two movies directed by Jodie Foster. The Mel Gibson stuffed puppet one. And that Christmas movie with RDJ.

Chris Thom

You've made enough dioramas this year Wesley Anderson. Now go to your room and go to bed!

Chris Thom

John Blutarsky - Zero point zero.

Richard Maurer

I thought Kazan would get more votes, too. My immediate thought was A Face in the Crowd so Cassie could see Walter Matthau in his "younger" years since she's loved him in Grumpy Old Men.

Liz Painter

Definitely need more Orson Welles. A reaction to The Third Man would be interesting.

Mark Vaderr

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor!?

Mark Vaderr

Probably true. Was thinking more about the performances and direction. Kind of forgot about the subject matter and ending.

Chris Thom

As long as it's not THE ROOKIE.

Stick Figure Studios

Cinema of cruelty.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, Cassie would enjoy all of the twists and turns in SLEUTH. She loves mysteries that keep her on her toes.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, it's pretty impressive. I also loved JUROR #2.

Stick Figure Studios

Even though I love his movies like MYSTIC RIVER and RICHARD JEWELL, I'm kind of hoping that the poll winner stars him as well (like OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, PALE RIDER, PERFECT WORLD, SPACE COWBOYS etc) because Cassie seems to get a lot of pleasure out of also just watching him on screen... as do I.

Stick Figure Studios

Wesley Anderson. Cassie must be mad at him, using the full birth name. 😀

Ian A

I’m surprised to see Joseph Mankiewicz and Elia Kazan beating Damien Chazelle. That’s pretty cool.

Larry Darrell

Actually… Clint Eastwood’s stats are… (starting with A Fistful of Dollars and excluding The Witches) 24 directed and starring 24 just starring 15 just directed So, surely there will be a bunch of directed/starring films in the running for a Director’s Poll. But, just as many only starring roles would be excluded from the Director’s Poll. Including films like… Where Eagles Dare (1968) Kelly’s Heroes (1970) Dirty Harry (1971) Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) Every Which Way But Loose (1978) Escape From Alcatraz (1979) The name of the game is “Director’s Poll” so I understand not everything can be considered, but just something for her to think about, maybe for a later day…or same week. Clint Eastwood is just a rarity among Actors turned Director, that succeeded in making so many great films as an actor solely, as an actor & director and as a director solely.

Larry Darrell

He got my vote.

Stephen Dias

Just want to give some underwatched directors’ movies a shot!

Marja

I like the randomness of this list. Props for that.

Grad

Reading through all the comments, with everyone throwing up different personal favourites, just emphasises for me how astonishingly deep and wide-ranging Clint's body of work is. He's been making great films in practically every genre for decades, and just a couple of weeks ago I loved Juror #2, made at the age of 94. What a career, he's a true one-off.

Henry Graham

Thank for the vote of confidence, Clarence! I will say, I'm only above average for a Dave (at least, that's how it was described to me) 🤣

Above Average Dave

In his latter days as well. Ba-dum-tss.

Happy Hanukkah

Reading is very important in life.

Rick Williams

I love WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART (and since she's already seen THE AFRICAN QUEEN, she would understand the context). What I don't love is THE ROOKIE. Hoping that one doesn't make the poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Clarence, you're confused. The only decent thing was Rita Hayworth!

Happy Hanukkah

I imagine that a real-life encounter with Godzilla would be painful indeed, so: good job, Roland! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Bjorn: You're Swedish?!?!?! 😲😲😲😲😲 😄 And let's not forget one of the most famous mid-century Swedes, Ingemar's sister Dagmar.

Happy Hanukkah

I am very disappointed by this poll; I don't recognize any of the movies!!!

Happy Hanukkah

I can't do it. Too corny. In all seriousness, Annie Hall is a good movie - if you can stand the little fella in the glasses.

Clarence Newman

As long as she doesn't watch "White Hunter, Black Heart". My own heart can't handle Clint Eastwood losing a fistfight.

Clarence Newman

It's her Dad I feel sorry for. I wonder how many potential boyfriends he chased off with a baseball bat before turning to both daughters and shouting, "Why couldn't ONE of you have grown up ugly!!??"

Clarence Newman

...what psycho came up with the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel? or ...at what angle does a right turn become a left merge? Are those the questions you have too? (jk)

Mike Lemon

Yeah, I like it too. Jessica Walter is great.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, she would like both I think.

Stick Figure Studios

Bilbo, at the end of his party.

Richard Maurer

Without giving anything away, I will just say that if you saw it, you would remember it.

Stick Figure Studios

I was unimpressed by INVICTUS myself, but I think she would like it.

Stick Figure Studios

Nobody was "nominated." These director's names were just drawn out of a hat. I'm Sure Ford was in there too. He just didn't get picked.

Stick Figure Studios

Clint Eastwood- The outlaw Josie wells and Pale Rider.

Tray-T

There's a jumpscare in Crocodile Dundee where you get to see the bottom of her foot. Even that's better looking than my face. And I refuse to believe that Above Average Dave ever has an Average day!

Clarence Newman

That is in the comments for every poll. It gets quite annoying.

Mike Lemon

Even though he's one of my favorite directors, I do think there might be *some* bad decisions when it comes to Clint... I mean, Have you seen THE ROOKIE? Ugh. :-(

Stick Figure Studios

Well, he's a director. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

She's got to watch Streetcar and On The Waterfront at some point. Brando filled the screen in those days.

Clarence Newman

Uwe Boll not on the list.

TheSingulatarian

I remember that being a good film, but Cassie's anxiety levels would be pretty high throughout. You know she'll be putting herself in Angelina's shoes.

Clarence Newman

I always loved the way Seamus calls him "Mr Aystwood."

Clarence Newman

Haha that's Ingrid Bergman 😄😄😄

Björn Karlsson

The only decent thing Ingemar Bergman did was Casablanca.

Clarence Newman

Agreed. They're a two-parter.

Clarence Newman

I disagree, Kevin. I think Cassie would love the dynamic between Caine and Olivier. They do work well off each other. And, for some reason, I love the way Olivier says the word "BASTARD!!"

Clarence Newman

OK, you've got me scratching my head. Who said that in what scene?

Clarence Newman

Well, the man has directed 40 films.

Stick Figure Studios

Emmerich's GODZILLA is painful.

Stick Figure Studios

I admire his craft and technique, but for the most part his films are a little too twee for me.

Stick Figure Studios

Though there would be a lot of overlap.

Stick Figure Studios

I see what you did there, Clarence.

Stick Figure Studios

"What about the rights of that little girl?" Great flick, but since it was not directed by Eastwood, would not qualify for this poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Great flick.

Stick Figure Studios

PALE RIDER is superb. It was my first Clint Eastwood film at age 10.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, since it's a director's poll, DIRTY HARRY wouldn't qualify (as it was directed by Don Siegel, not Eastwood) although I'd like to see a reaction to it someday, but OUTLAW JOSEY WALES would be great.

Stick Figure Studios

I've seen about half of these.

Stick Figure Studios

The number of comments saying "I can't believe such-and-such director isn't on the list" shows just how many people don't read the messages Cassie posts.

Stick Figure Studios

I like MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. Not one of his best, but still good.

Stick Figure Studios

Speaking of Orson Welles, I'd love to see some of his movies start making an appearance on the channel (I even selected KANE has one of my five trivia night winner picks).

Stick Figure Studios

Once Clint wins, I'd like to see Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) on the poll - with John Cusack, Kevin Spacey and Clint's daughter (Alison Eastwood)...just watched it Sunday night. It's a long movie, though.

crazyivan

Great actor and in a lot of cases, even greater Director. I don't think there is a person in Movie history who is such and acclaimed actor AND director. Maybe you can start with Clint's first movie he ever directed, "Play Misty for Me."

Bill Maurer

I think she should watch the whole Dirty Harry series

Bill Maurer

If you read her post, she send she did a random draw from a bunch of directors.

Cole Jennett

LITTLE shocked that Hitchcock isn't on this list. When I think of iconic directors, he is top of my list.

Cathleen Jennings

Yeah... he did that, and hes also a swede, like Ingemar Bergman and Mattias Ljungberg... and me :P

Björn Karlsson

I genuinely have never heard of him, I just looked him up on IMDB and yep I recognise some of the films titles like East of Eden, but I've never seen any of them, but then I guess that is more down to whatever era you grew up in. I was a seventies kid so late seventies through to nineties are the films I tend to know best.

shireknight

Eastwood didn't direct "Dirty Harry", but I agree it would make for a good reaction.

Jake McNulty

Didn't know he directed Pale Rider.

Chris Thom

Same.

Above Average Dave

Ghost and Mrs. Muir, A Letter to Three Wives, All About Eve, The Barefoot Contessa, Guys and Dolls, Suddenly Last Summer, Sleuth…

Catherine LW

States that Elia Kazan doesn't spring to mind as a director, but Gerald Thomas does. Calls someone else a troll.

Happy Hanukkah

"Such a hidden gem." ISWYDT. :-P :-P :-P Sorry.

Happy Hanukkah

My standard line is that I don't understand the hate that movie gets; it's a perfectly fine 15-minute movie starring Jean Reno.

Happy Hanukkah

Lukas Moodysson? Has he directed any movie I might have heard of, preferably in 1998? :-)

Happy Hanukkah

My hair never looks anywhere close to that good.

Chris Thom

Directors aside, anyone else feel like "Cassie Haggard" > "Me on an Average Day"?

Above Average Dave

He’s up with William Wyler among my favorite directors. Absolutely ridiculous amount of great films.

China Andronicus

Definitely an acquired taste. A lot of his movies do tend to get (much) better with a rewatch.

Chris Thom

When you see a lot of movies you can start to tell who the director is without checking. A lot of them have patterns in visuals, storytelling techniques, music, and the politics of the story being told. But yeah I would bet most don't really notice or care. My mom definitely doesn't. I think Cassie just recently started to notice.

Chris Thom

Elia Kazan should be much higher- On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Streetcar named Desire, Brando in his prime, come on!

John Drake

Since Eastwood seems to be winning, the Outlaw Josey Wales and Dirty Harry are quintessential Eastwood movies.

Jimmy Stewart

Changeling would be a good Clint Eastwood one to watch. Angelina was amazing in that. And the guy who played the insane character as well.

Chris Thom

Outlaw Josey Wales might be the greatest Western style movie of all time IMO

Jimmy Stewart

Or if you want a LotR quote- My friend I regret to inform you this is the end. I’ll be going now.

Richard Maurer

It’s over Johnny, it’s over.

Richard Maurer

Lukas Moodysson will be better for Cassie, instead of Ingemar Bergman imo 🤔🙂

Björn Karlsson

Yeah….not a great list for directors. Clint Eastwood, obviously….but there’s a lot of other great directors. The ones on this list aren’t elite IMO.

Steve B

Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war. You asked me, I didn't ask you! Sorry, got carried away.

Clarence Newman

"Man, I gots to know."

Clarence Newman

There is no bad decision when it comes to Clint. He was great in Heartbreak Ridge, Space Cowboys and Back To The Future 3.

Clarence Newman

You're doing great. I'm happy for your success with these reactions

Redrum Ritual

Such a shame Wes Anderson is not winning this lol. I went back and watched his filmography from "Bottle rocket (1996)" to "Asteroid city (2023)". And it crystallized for me that he's one of the great directors and auteurs working today. He has never made a bad film. Clint Eastwood is a legend but his directing is very uneven. However his Latest "Juror #2" is supposedly really good. Looking forward to seeing it. I believe it's coming to HBO MAX next week.

Atreyu Auryn

Roland Emmerich? Yikes.

Silver Machine

Agreed. “A Face In The Crowd” is one of my all-time favorites. Would love Cassie to watch it — if only to see a young Walter Matthau!

Silver Machine

Same. As Rick said, "We'll always have the next PIB poll."

Rick Rodriguez

Pale Rider is a Clint Eastwood movie that Cassie and Carly should check out, I have suggested it to her many times over the years. Heartbreak Ridge as well.

Tom Castro

“ABSOLUTE POWER” is my vote for Clint Eastwood.

Uncle Phoenix

“A Perfect World” passes my test. (Every year there are certain movies that I have to watch again.)

Uncle Phoenix

I expect there are a lot out there like us. Obviously I go in knowing some of the bigger names like Spielberg, Scorsese, and Eastwood, but if you were to ask me one movie directed by Joseph Mankiewicz I wouldn’t have an answer, though I’m sure I’ve seen some.

Cole Jennett

We don't care at all about her looks...am I right guys (haha)?

Joe

Play Misty for Me is wild (haha), I know it gets some hate, but I always liked it.

Joe

The Outlaw Josey Wales was always my favorite Clint western. Shane is a classic, I think Cassie would love it.

Joe

Tbh, I didn't even know Foster directed any movies.

Joe

Hillary Swank plays a female boxer and Eastwood is a boxing trainer. Morgan Freeman is in it as well

Shawn Kildal

In the context of the film, that scene in HPD is acceptable to most viewers IMO.

Joe

Having gone through all of the comments, with the exception of one or two of you, shame! Shame on all who fail to recognize "A Perfect World" as the one Clint Eastwood-directed movie that should...nay...must be seen by PiB! Especially since it also stars another one of the PiB-favorite leading men.

bgb1975

I would hope not. Just thought the subject matter of the story might potentially violate a rule.

Stick Figure Studios

I might be a troglodyte, but I dont keep track of directors. I'll leave this poll to people who have an opinion on such things lol

Miguel

SLEUTH is great. One of my favorite films.

Stick Figure Studios

JOSEY WALES has been on Cassie's radar for a while.

Stick Figure Studios

Despite being a huge fan of both Clint Eastwood (as an actor and a director) and Meryl Streep, I don't particularly care for BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, but I know the ladies would love it. They would also love SPACE COWBOYS though and I think that one is terrific.

Stick Figure Studios

I seconded this. Even though he didn't direct it (Don Siegel did) it's an iconic film that turned him into a worldwide superstar.

Stick Figure Studios

Also, it's spelled "Kubrick" (not "Kubrik") and I believe you mean "boring" and not "booring."

Stick Figure Studios

He acted in at least a few of them - Unforgiven (which Cassie has already watched), and "A Perfect World" (which I've been actively lobbying for). Pretty sure he's acted in others that he has directed as well.

bgb1975

Since the ladies have of course seen MI7 Part 1, why not watch another action film, maybe "Under Siege", have I mentioned it before (haha).

Joe

"You have to ask yourself one question....."

bgb1975

That's your momma and your daddy for the next thirteen weeks.

Clarence Newman

I bet you're still gorgeous

William Bryan

I always struggled to connect with Wes Anderson films while admiring the craft and imagination that went into them, but then The Grand Budapest Hotel came out of nowhere and knocked me out. It instantly became one of my favourite films and nothing else he's done before or since quite measures up, which is weird when they are all made with such a similar aesthetic and sensibility.

Henry Graham

I always assumed that Clint Eastwood had been directing the movies he was starring in the last 10-20 years, but I guess he only acted in Trouble with the Curve. It wouldn’t have won on the poll anyways, but that was why I voted for Clint.

Cole Jennett

Yes, many have complained about the fact she never separates her polls modern and older. Maybe one day.

Joe

Cassie. Don't worry about not looking your angelic best all the time. I often wake up looking like Hagrid too.

Clarence Newman

Kazan deserves more love than he’s getting. Brilliant director.

China Andronicus

Where's Ed Wood? Who's in charge here (haha)?

Joe

Perhaps you read her comments on the post before you criticize. These were the results of a random draw

Cole Jennett

If you had read her post, it says the list was randomly selected.

Joe

How can you have a director poll without, maybe the greatest directors of all time, Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrik? It is booring that Hollywood seems to decide who you put on your polls. It is not only U.S.A that follows you, dear. Try some more diversifiering please.

Mattias Ljungberg

Ohhhhh yes to Heartbreak Ridge. The most Clint Eastwood movie of all time that isn't a western.

Clarence Newman

The Carry On films are worth a look - but only one or two of them. The best ones were in the 60s, most notably "Spying", "Cleo", "Screaming" and "Cowboy". I am less concerned that Cassie might not get the humour since she's already reacted to, and enjoyed, Austin Powers. It's a similar kind of thing.

Clarence Newman

His last film, Sleuth (1972), was great too. Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine pretty much give an acting lesson.

Clarence Newman

Alright, where's Taylor Hackford??

Clarence Newman

Oh how much I wish Cassie and Carly would watch Bridges of Madison County. I am not sure it has a chance indeed. :-)

René Ferland

Bridges in right up their alley. However, I fear that if it’s included with some of the other movies he’s director, it wont fair well. I think both of them would also love Space Cowboys.

Dan M

Clint's a great director, I voted for him, but also for Wes Anderson, I'm a huge fan of his movies. I love their quirkiness and humor and even though it looks like an Eastwood landslide, I hope Cassie eventually gets to enjoy my Anderson favorites: Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums (probably my top favorite), Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Limited, etc. I think she liked Grand Budapest and there are still several of his films I haven't seen yet, so that'd be extra fun for me.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Separate polls for Clint Eastwood the Director and Clint Eastwood the Actor would be an idea to consider.

Larry Darrell

I've seen a few of his, The Grand Budapest Hotel was fun for me, but he is not close to the top of my list. Not bad, but just not my cup of tea.

JoshArg

I agree with you, a separate poll for early director would be nice.

René Ferland

Wes Anderson was nominated but not John Ford .... I worry about today's movie going audience.

Bill Maurer

Outlaw of Josey Wales is the best Western in past 50 years !!! Great, great western and movie !!!

Bill Maurer

Of course, fewer of your patrons knowing the earlier directors, there is bound to be a very strong recency effect, and, even though Kazan and Mankiewicz are superb, the early directors will not have a fair chance. How can your patrons vote for people they have never heard of? I applaud your attempt to even things out with random candidates but may I respectfully suggest that in future you do separate selections for those who began their careers pre and post 1970.

Ted Little

Ditto on Invictus.

Clay F

i do NOT get wes anderson tho i know a lot of people love his movies. hope ill learn to gain an appreciation if you feature a few on the channel though!

Dan W

I'm hoping for Mystic River. Don't know how Cassie would take it, just love the film.

Mike LL

He directed and also starred in Million Dollar Baby alongside Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. It's a boxing movie if it helps to identify it better. Given you haven't mentioned it in any other boxing movie reactions, I have doubts whether you've seen.

Gábor Árki

good idea! i’ll check on that next time!

Cassie

I included him not because he is or was a great director, I'm just saying he's directed 30 films in the same series -how many other directors have directed 30 films in the same film series. And most of the Carry-On films are very good actually, thank you very much mister troll.

shireknight

wait is he in it? i still don’t know if i have either. I thought i had by the title but don’t remember one scene, the story characters anything, maybe i was confused about and mixing it with another title

Cassie

Letters from Iwo Jima would be my vote when Clint Eastwood wins. Which means you gotta watch Flags of our Fathers as well.

Alex Gorell

they were on the list, i had a huge list, put them in a hat, so there’s still a chance next time!

Cassie

wow so many!!!

Cassie

all of those names you mentioned were in the hat, just didn’t get drawn this time!! maybe next! can’t wait

Cassie

our podcast episode of movies we love that everyone else hates, a lot of people talked about that godzilla!

Cassie

Sorry, but I can't vote for any of these - especially since Clint is going to win anyway. Good news is no Woody Allen.

crazyivan

When I saw Clint Eastwood on here I knew it was over. Then I voted and saw I was right.

Richard Maurer

Josey Wales Please!

Patrick Fitzgerald

Interesting list. How many films from the winner will you see? For instance 2 directors have 1 film I think you'd love. But I picked Clint since he's the most prolific even though you've seen 2 of his best already.

Robert Jewell

Would love to see her watch First Man by Chazelle. Love that movie.

dv12

Haven’t seen that one. I’ll have to check it out.

Dan M

speaking of clint you should watch Dirty harry, very young and sexy

harvard

Jersey Boys is a bio pic about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, so you know the music will be great. Plus, it’s got Christopher Walken, so another plus there.

Dan M

I’m for beginning at the beginning Joseph Mankiewicz is a fantastic director. I recommend Cleopatra. It was a cultural phenomenon at a time and you’ll love it also Elia Kazan.

(Nolo)finwe

My great hope with Clint Eastwood being ahead in the poll is that it leads Cassie and Carly to watch The Bridges of Madison County. A wonderful romance and a hugely underrated film. It's my favourite ever Meryl Streep performance and it always makes me cry.

Henry Graham

A big +1 for The Outlaw Josey Wales

Clay F

I was thinking the same about her starting watching the Dirty Harry films. Heartbreak Ridge is one of my favourites as I just have a lot of nostalgia for it and it’s a good movie too. Love Space Cowboy’s and I agree she would love it as it’s also got Tommy Lee Jones in. But I’d also add, Firefox (good action/thriller & really underrated) The Rookie (good buddy cop film) Absolute Power (with Gene Hackman) And Flags of Our Father’s

Dean Holt

The very two I voted for, but I am such a Classic Era film lover.

Mike LL

I don't think it is a rules violator, Stick, nothing is shown on screen to violate a rule.

Mike LL

Well going by the landslide poll i'm hoping for Space Cowboys or The Outlaw Josey Wales as I can't remember any recent westerns on the channel.

Gray

There are just a ton of great Howard Hawks films, and I would have loved to have seen his name in this poll. And a lot of his films have already been in polls here: Bringing Up Baby His Girl Friday Sergeant York To Have and Have Not The Big Sleep Red River Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Rio Bravo

Mike LL

I kind of like the random director idea. You might see something that you might not otherwise watch...of course, in this case, I think it was a foregone conclusion who would win. Personally, I like Mankiewicz because of Sleuth, but I have to admit, it's probably not a Popcorn in Bed type of film.

Kevin Albertina

I think the point was to do a poll and not go with the obvious choices. As Cassie’s probably done quite a few Spielberg films and she’s definitely done 4 or 5 of Hitchcock’s. But I’d definitely class Eastwood as a big director as he’s done around 40 films spanning over several decades. But it’s sounds like she will continue doing this so someone you like might come up in the future.

Dean Holt

Yes, it's still the odds , his name or his movies haven't come up . If you do get to watch some of his movies "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir , "All About Eve", People Will Talk and "Sleuth"(1972) are some of my favorites of his. I did vote for him in the poll !

Keith Brown

Roland Emmerich's best film IMHO was "Stargate" with Kurt Russell. But he also did a very meme-able version of Godzilla with Matthew Broderick.

Ryan Gondek

Edward Zwick who did "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise also did "Blood Diamond" with Leo and "The Siege" with Denzel.

Ryan Gondek

It says in the post that the directors were randomly picked.

D

It says in the post that the directors were randomly selected. Also, did you seriously expect her to have watched a Carry On film? That franchise is neither well known in the present day or critically acclaimed. You may be older and thus hold those films to a higher regard but they are not a must watch and you won't find a single other reactor watching them. Putting Gerald Thomas in the same lineup as Hitchcock and Spielberg is a joke.

D

It says in the post that the directors were randomly picked.

D

Of all the classic Hollywood Directors I'm curious how you came up with Joseph L. Mankiewicz ? He has a great resume from the 1930's thru 1970's but I would have bet Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, William Wyler or John Ford would have been picked before his name came up.

Keith Brown

Was hoping Josie Foster would win if only so Cassie could see her film The Beaver (2011). Such a hidden gem. Oh well maybe next time.

Blake Evans

I'll be honest none of these names would have sprung into my mind when thinking about directors, where are the true directors -Hitchcock, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, David Lean even Gerald Thomas, he directed 30 Carry-On films but you haven't watched a single one of those yet ha ha.

shireknight

Midway would make for a good double feature with Tora Tora Tora as a reaction commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor and its aftermath. Tried suggesting this last year and this year too without success.

Gábor Árki

I would go with Roland Emmerich who created the Stargate franchise and you probably already done a few of his best but probably my favourite and best of his movies directed would be universal soldier which if you look it up everywhere it will say it's undoubtedly one of Roland Emmerich's best action movies right up top of the list with Stargate (1994) and the patriot(2000).

baz0348

From this top dozen or so, I would be on-board for a reaction to all, maybe with the exception of High Plains Drifter. And even below there are some good ones. But Invictus is the closest to my heart. Not his best, I won't argue about this, but I just love how that movie makes me feel, and I think Cassie would too.

Gábor Árki

I like seeing The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) near the top. Also, Pale Rider (1985), Invictus (2009), High Plains Drifter (1973), and A Perfect World (1993) all in the top quarter.

Clay F

Orson Welles did a speech on who Elia Kazan is that people should watch then…. I jest, but it is still the first thing I think of when Kazan’s name is brought up

Michael G

Looks like it's Clint in a landslide, to which I can only say I hope Heartbreak Ridge wins. I'd prefer Wes Anderson, especially his first 2 films before he went absolutely crazy with set design as such a focus of his movies. Personally I think Cassie would really like Rushmore, but you really can't go wrong with Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums or the Life Aquatic. IMO, everything he's done after the Grand Budapest Hotel is varying degrees of pretentious nonsense with occasional bits of amusement. Others love his recent stuff, but it's not for me. But alas, Clint it is.

Stranger2Reality

Clint Eastwood poll suggestions: *Pale Rider *Outlaw Josey Wales *Heartbreak Ridge *Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil *Space Cowboys (the one Cassie would probably like best) *Richard Jewell And, while we’re at it, this would make a good time to start watching the Dirty Harry films.

Just Plain Bob

Considering you have already watched 2 film directed by and a couple more starring Clint Eastwood, you should give someone else a chance. Wes Anderson gets my vote. You watched The Grand Budapest Hotel a couple years back and you said that you really liked it so I am surprised you haven't already watched more of his work. I'd recommend Fantastic Mr. Fox considering it is one of his most acclaimed films and it's still relatively accessible like The Grand Budapest Hotel.

D

I do, Happy Kwanzaa

Redrum Ritual

Honestly, I wouldn't mind that at all, could introduce some variety. And I would be onboard for an Eastwood week too, because he has just so many good ones.

Gábor Árki

Well, I’m sure there would’ve been more Clint to come in the future, even without this poll. Kazan however, I doubt that, unless someone submitted one of his films in the recent thing. There is one Eastwood film that I love, but I won’t say which one, because my haters here will vote against it😂

Shehab Dawoud

Wes Anderson movies are awful. Boring AF.

Joel Baumgartner

You don't say!

Happy Hanukkah

Cassie has already reacted to his three top-rated (IMDb) movies; I appreciated Midway, but I'm OK with three-and-done.

Happy Hanukkah

John freaking Ford

Bill Maurer

Sadly, I fear you're right.

Stick Figure Studios

His name just wasn't picked.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't know that 4 movies out of over 600 counts as "a lot," but granted, it's four more than Kazan has... and personally, I'd love to see STREETCAR or WATERFRONT get a reaction (as well as classic flms by other great directors like Charlie Chaplin or Orson Welles). Still, as an Eastwood fan, I can't complain.

Stick Figure Studios

Guillermo Del Toro, David Fincher, Tim Burton, Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves. I don't see them on the list

Redrum Ritual

Okay, I’ll pick Clint Eastwood instead of Damien Chazelle but please, oh please, don’t pick one that’s gonna make me cry. 😢🫢🫣😭

Ike

She would like Invictus I think. I like it.

Clay F

During her intro to Unforgiven, she indicated it was going to be her first Eastwood movie to watch. Plus, during livestreams when rattling off Eastwood movies she has seen, she never mentions Million Dollar Baby.

Shawn Kildal

I'm not pushing for it, but if I had to pick a movie for Cassie right this second, I'd go with Invictus as a safe choice.

Happy Hanukkah

I think most people here don’t even know who Kazan is.

Shehab Dawoud

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsUm_5jHhJ4

Happy Hanukkah

Would’ve been a nice opportunity to get a new name on the channel. We’ve already had a a lot of Eastwood, both on and behind the camera. Kazan would’ve been a lovely change of pace. Oh well, as long as it’s not Wes Anderson, I can’t complain too much. Can’t stand him and his style.

Shehab Dawoud

The best thing about DEAD POOL is the chase involving the remote control car.

Stick Figure Studios

DIRTY HARRY is easily the best of that series, but I enjoy all of those movies (even if it is a case of diminishing returns).

Stick Figure Studios

SLEUTH is the Joseph Mankiewicz film I'd like to see a reaction to.

Stick Figure Studios

I assumed it was only going to be one movue, but I'd love to see a whole week devoted to a director.

Stick Figure Studios

There is also the question of whether or not TIGHTROPE should count because although Eastwood allegedly directed most of the movie himself, Richard Tuggle still received the official screen credit. It's not unlike the Spielberg/Hooper controversy surrounding POLTERGEIST.

Stick Figure Studios

Stick, good comments. Unforgiven is his masterpiece. AFI Top 100. I agree that i think she would enjoy Outlaw Josey Wales (my No. 1)

Clay F

Yeah, PLAY MISTY FOR ME is good... and she probably would like BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. I'm just not that crazy about it myself.

Stick Figure Studios

Wes Anderson all the Wes Anderson. No John Ford?

TheSingulatarian

I think Cleopatra would win easily.

Shawn Kildal

+1 for LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA

Clay F

I find it so funny that Cassie wrote "Wesley Anderson" instead of simply "Wes Anderson". :D Never change, Cassie! I want to vote for Wes Anderson too, but I predict that at least 10 of his more popular movies will be picked ahead of my favourite Wes Anderson movie: "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". I'd wager money that "Isle of Dogs" would be picked first. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie and I'm certain Cassie would enjoy it; it's just not my favourite.

Rod Reavern

If Eastwood wins, which seems likely, there are a few questions for Cassie to clarify. According to Letterboxd, the following are marked as seen, but these are not always reliable: - Million Dollar Baby (2004) - American Sniper (2014) - Sully (2016) Also, going through his directorial credits, there are a few that should be omitted: - Dirty Harry (1971) - he only directed a small segment, not the entire movie - Sudden Impact (1983) - this is the 4th installment of the Dirty Harry series - Unforgiven (1992) - already reacted to - Gran Torino (2008) - already reacted to This still leaves the following 34 movies, ordered by IMDB rate and release year: The 15:17 to Paris (2018) - 5.3 Cry Macho (2021) - 5.7 Firefox (1982) - 5.9 The Rookie (1990) - 5.9 Bronco Billy (1980) - 6.2 The Eiger Sanction (1975) - 6.4 The Gauntlet (1977) - 6.4 Blood Work (2002) - 6.4 White Hunter Black Heart (1990) - 6.5 Space Cowboys (2000) - 6.5 Hereafter (2010) - 6.5 J. Edgar (2011) - 6.5 Honkytonk Man (1982) - 6.6 Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) - 6.6 True Crime (1999) - 6.6 Absolute Power (1997) - 6.7 Heartbreak Ridge (1986) - 6.8 Jersey Boys (2014) - 6.8 Play Misty for Me (1971) - 6.9 Breezy (1973) - 7.0 The Mule (2018) - 7.0 Bird (1988) - 7.1 Flags of Our Fathers (2006) - 7.1 (*) Juror #2 (2024) - 7.1 Pale Rider (1985) - 7.3 Invictus (2009) - 7.3 High Plains Drifter (1973) - 7.4 A Perfect World (1993) - 7.5 Richard Jewell (2019) - 7.5 The Bridges of Madison County (1995) - 7.6 Changeling (2008) - 7.7 The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) - 7.8 Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) - 7.8 (*) Mystic River (2003) - 7.9 (*) Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima are complementary movies released in the same year about the two sides of the same battle, and ideally best to be watched in this order.

Gábor Árki

Snipes!!

Chris Retzlaff

I'd honestly vote for Joseph Mankiewicz if I KNEW Cassie would watch "Cleopatra" (1963) but I'm TERRIFIED she'll watch "Guys and Dolls" instead. I can't stand that movie!

Rod Reavern

Her reaction to Gran Turino was pretty good

Chris Retzlaff

As you wish 🤣

Jon Johns

"Wesley" 🤣 (As You Wish🤪)

Jon Johns

You don't like A Dead Pool?..Jim Carrey lip singing to Welcome to the Jungle...Liam Neeson

Chris Retzlaff

That's cool you have that signed poster.

Clay F

I am up for Dirty Harry but don't have the nostalgia for it that I do Escape from Alcatraz. But Dirty Harry is a movie that was part of our culture and should be watched at least once. I am not as big on the rest in the series/franchise.

Clay F

She would love A PERFECT WORLD (Eastwood and Costner in the same movie? Are you kidding me?). I actually have a poster for A PERFECT WORLD signed by Eastwood himself. I have a feeling that thing might become a valuable item before long.

Stick Figure Studios

Play Misty for Me is good too. Cassie would probably love Bridges of Madison County.

Shawn Kildal

I like ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ, but if we were opening it up to Don Siegel movies that starred Clint Eastwood, I think she should see DIRTY HARRY first.

Stick Figure Studios

With Eastwood she hasn't even scratched the surface (I mean, the man has directed 40 films). There's still MYSTIC RIVER, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, RICHARD JEWELL, ABSOLUTE POWER, PERFECT WORLD, SPACE COWBOYS, TRUE CRIME, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, PALE RIDER, BRONCO BILLY, HONKY TONK MAN, WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART and JUROR #2 to name just a few.

Stick Figure Studios

She told me once they she did see it off the channel, long before she even knew who Clint Eastwood was.

Stick Figure Studios

Is this an entire week of the directors' movies or just one. Just curious.

Shawn Kildal

I think there is a good chance that A Perfect World will be a poll candidate.

Clay F

If Eastwood does win, we need to get the bottom of one of PIB's biggest riddles which is has Cassie seen Million Dollar Baby? It's on her Letterboxd list, but she is uncertain about it.

Shawn Kildal

A Perfect World has been my Suggestion for years

Chris Retzlaff

It's either Welcome to earth, bitch! Or Stella!!!

Chris Retzlaff

Idk, seems like Cassie has already seen a lot of these. Just at a glance, she's already seen Million Dollar Baby, Sully, American Sniper, Moonrise Kingdom, Grand Budapest Hotel, LaLaLand, Whiplash...seems like most of the best ones are out.

Maisie

Shawn -- I love Escape from Alcatraz -- watched many times -- but unfortunately as both you and Stick reminded me (thanks for the reminder), it is not directed by Eastwood -- so edited my post to delete.

Clay F

It seems Cassie is rooting for Joseph Mankiewicz since his entire name is in all caps.

Shawn Kildal

OK, again though, how did his name end up in the hat? Seems like a problem with vetting again. Maybe screen out the directors with only 1-2 movies.

Stranger2Reality

I still need to see CHANGELING.

Stick Figure Studios

Thanks Stick. Editing my post now. That questionable scene (which I hate and fast forward over) is something that she could handle just fine -- and is educational in a sense as to what was quasi-acceptable behavior a half century ago. I have had this discussion many times. I had a middle-aged female tell me it is favorite scene in the movie -- though she may have been trolling me -- but I don't know. Many fans see it as a nuisance to get past. But especially younger adult viewers don't like it.

Clay F

Mystic River The Bridges of Madison County (Only because it's a chick flick, I know they'd love it) Sully Heartbreak Ridge * I wanted to choose Elia Kazan because of A Streetcar Named Desire or On the Waterfront, but I had a feeling this crowd wouldn't pick him, so Clint Eastwood seemed more of an obvious choice.

JPDotCom23

Because she apparently drew his name out of the hat. The real question is why his name was in there in the first place because with only two movies on it, it would be a very small poll.

Stick Figure Studios

I wish Escape from Alcatraz was an option if Eastwood was to win the poll. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Don Siegel directed it.

Shawn Kildal

This is a director's poll, so only movies that Eastwood directed would be included. That leaves out ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ (which starred Eastwood, but was directed by Don Siegel). The other titles could be on it though. Someone else mentioned that she's already seen SULLY and as much as I like HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, I think it might be, as I mentioned in another comment, a bit too problematic for her (that one scene in particular). INVICTUS is a nice film but nothing special imo. However, PALE RIDER, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES and PERFECT WORLD would be all marvelous choices.

Stick Figure Studios

She's also already seen MILLION DOLLAR BABY outside of the channel.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't know what's more disturbing. The lack of love for Elia Kazan, or the amount of love for Roland Emmerich.

Mark Vaderr

He definitely has his share of clunkers (I just watched THE ROOKIE the other day for the first time and it was painful), but I think he has more hits than misses, so statistically speaking, the odds of an actual good movie winning the poll are pretty strong.

Stick Figure Studios

My son likes Wes Anderson but my favorite in the poll is Eastwood. Suggested Eastwood movies: --THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976) --Pale Rider (1985) --High Plains Drifter (1973) --Invictus (2009). Matt Damon. Morgan Freeman --A Perfect World (1993) ("Clint Eastwood's haunting, ambiguous crime drama is smart and gritty, and features a bravura performance from KEVIN COSTNER") --Letters From Iwo Jima (2006). Ken Watanabe (Katsumoto in The Last Samurai) --Juror #2 (2024). Nicholas Hoult.

Clay F

Ah, that makes sense, but then, why was he included in the poll? 😂

Stranger2Reality

She's her worst critic

Mark Vaderr

I enjoyed CRY MACHO, but I know that a lot of people did not and felt that if it was his swansong, then it was a pretty limp ending to his career as a director. Thankfully, JUROR #2 is a much higher note to go out on if It truly ends up being his last.

Stick Figure Studios

OUTLAW JOSEY WALES is a wonderful movie and arguably the best western Clint ever directed (though I still think UNFORGIVEN is his masterpiece). It was actually the number one movie in theaters the week that I was born. I think Cassie would enjoy that one, probably more than PALE RIDER (which I think is very underrated) and certainly more than HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER.

Stick Figure Studios

Changeling

Mark Vaderr

I figured she'd get to one or both of those films eventually with her "War Movie Wednesday" thing she was doing for a while.

Stick Figure Studios

MYSTIC RIVER Is a phenomenal film. One of his best. I included in my list as well, but now that I think of it, the story might violate one of her rules.

Stick Figure Studios

These names were drawn at random. I don't think she's going to add to them.

Stick Figure Studios

It drops on Max later this month. I saw it in the theater and it's superb.

Stick Figure Studios

Partly, but also partly because of those few movies Cassie has apparently already seen WHIPLASH and LA LA LAND, according to Popcornrequests.

Gábor Árki

Has that one questionable scene but she would handle it. Yet, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES is my favorite Eastwood western, even more than Unforgiven and his spaghetti westerns -- I have nostalgia for OUTLAW JOSEY WALES. PALE RIDER and HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER are both excellent and equal to each other for me.

Clay F

Clint Eastwood's filmography is such a minefield: some truly great movies mixed in with some absolutely awful ones. I'm definitely worried at which movies will be included in the poll if he wins, as he has quite a few turkeys in there.

Stranger2Reality

I do, but am more familiar with fosters and Eastwood's body of work.

rakesh

I didn't even know he made a new movie. I thought he said somewhere CRY MACHO will be his last. But maybe that was only as an actor. At age 94 he's still making new movies. He truly lives for his.

Gábor Árki

"Heartbreak Ridge" is a favorite of mine. "Mystic River" is a heartbreaking flick. (see what I did there?)

R F.

😞

Rick Rodriguez

Wesley…

djKENTO

But you know Wes Anderson?

Clay F

Surprised Damien Chazelle isn't getting more love. Not enough movies to choose from maybe?

Stranger2Reality

Oy. She just watched Howard the Duck, do we really want to hit her with another awful movie again so soon?

Stranger2Reality

I still need to see JERSEY BOYS myself, but SPACE COWBOYS is wonderful and she would indeed enjoy it.

Stick Figure Studios

Juror number 2?

rakesh

That explains why it's such a random assortment of directors 😂

Stranger2Reality

Two fine filmmakers, but probably too esoteric for this community.

Stick Figure Studios

Bummer. In that case I don’t care who wins.

Luke Godfrey

The only ones I really know are Clint Eastwood and Jodie foster. But I think Clint has more body of work, so I'll go with him

rakesh

Precisely. That's why, after I caught JUROR #2 in It's very brief one-week theatrical run (and loved it), I decided to check and see how many more of his movies I needed to watch. The man has directed 40 films(!) and I had only seen 27 of them, so I really needed to fill those gaps. I'm now up to 34 and counting.

Stick Figure Studios

I believe Cassie has seen Sully before the channel. It is marked as watched, but this is not a 100% certainty.

Gábor Árki

You can’t go wrong with On the waterfront and A streetcar named desire.

Starpartyguy

I think Cassie would really like Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. He has so many good ones to choose from.

Johnny

If you want to add to the list, Sydney Pollack for Tootsie, They Shoot Horses Don’t They, and Electric Horseman. And Howard Hawks for To have and have not, El Dorado, and my favorite, Hatari.

Starpartyguy

I still need to see JERSEY BOYS and HEARTBREAK RIDGE (and I don't particularly like BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY), but I support the other choices on this list. In fact, they are included in my own list (along with several other titles).

Stick Figure Studios

Had a similar though a couple of years ago after I realized how many movies he made, and I haven't seen a good portion of it yet. Also, there a few I remember seeing as teen, like A PERFECT WORLD, and haven't watched it again since then. But I just forgot to follow up on this. Maybe I should.

Gábor Árki

You don’t realize how many movies he’s directed until you look at his filmography as a director. He’s such a talented guy.

Dan M

Maybe. But I’d wager they wouldn’t win a poll even if they were on one.

Luke Godfrey

I think she’d love Jersey Boys and Space Cowboys as well.

Dan M

Just to recap, my suggestions for movies directed by Clint Eastwood: Space Cowboys Jersey Boys Mystic River Heartbreak Ridge Sully The Bridges of Madison County

Dan M

If you take into consideration the films from these directors that Cassie has already seen, Wes Anderson should win this by MILES.

Roy Batty

Indeed.

Stick Figure Studios

Well, this is one of the easiest polls I’ve had to vote on, because Mr. Eastwood was my suggestion a couple of days back. A great actor, and a great director!

Dan M

Wes Anderson! His movies always so well framed

Bobilicious

Firefox is a different but interesting role for Eastwood. He plays a fighter pilot who has to become a spy in order to steal a fighter jet out of Russia.

Starpartyguy

ABSOLUTE POWER! That was GREAT!!

Carol Rocha

Million Dollar Baby; Mystic River; Firefox are all great!

Carol Rocha

These names were picked at random.

Stick Figure Studios

That'd be nice.

Stick Figure Studios

I also hope Eastwood wins. SULLY would be a good pick.

Stick Figure Studios

HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER is good, but might be a bit too problematic (one scene in particular). I think she'd be better off with OUTLAW JOSEY WALES or PALE RIDER.

Stick Figure Studios

Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite directors and I'm currently going through his filmography watching the few remaining films of his I haven't seen (and am really enjoying it), so he has my vote.

Stick Figure Studios

Elia Kazan has done a number of top notch movies

John

Would love Wes Anderson but Clint is a very good pick too

Dallin

Be better off to see High Plains Drifter first because it and SHANE combined are the basis for Pale Rider.

John

Clint Eastwood for me. He directed so many good ones, it may need more than one poll to fit all of them. 😃

Gábor Árki

Let's not underrate Kazan and Mankiewicz. Some gem reactions waiting there.

Rick Rodriguez

Your a beautiful Mama. Never ever gonna break a camera lense due to your looks. Miss PiB. Ha

Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite directors and I'm currently going through his filmography watching the few remaining films of his I haven't seen (and am really enjoying it), so he has my vote. Some of the titles I suggest for the poll are OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, PALE RIDER, BRONCO BILLY, HONKYTONK MAN, MYSTIC RIVER, RICHARD JEWELL, SULLY, ABSOLUTE POWER, TRUE CRIME, SPACE COWBOYS, BLOOD WORK, A PERFECT WORLD, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, THE MULE and JUROR #2.

Clint? Think we 're due some westerns.

Not surprised to see Clint take an early lead Maybe next time swap in Paul Thomas Anderson?

I voted for Clint Eastwood in the hopes that Sully would be on the poll if he won. Can’t wait to see what Cassie makes of Star Trek (2009). Love that movie. J.J. Abrams knocked it out of the park. Plus it gives me a slimmer of hope she’ll eventually watch Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Preferring from episode one and without skipping any. 🙏🏻

*fingers crossed* c'mon Moonfall 😈

I do not believe it's possible for Cassie to look haggard. The woman has down right angelic looks.

Clint Eastwood's Firefox is a great early 80's film; both it and Raiders of the Lost Ark were in the theatre at the same time:) Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums is a perfect movie.
