Uncle Buck (1989) - Full Reaction

Well this was a fun one, so 80s haha!! John Candy was a delight. I'd let him watch my kids any day! It wasn't as classic as Planes, Trains and Automobiles for me but felt similar. I'm glad I got to know him.

Uncle Buck (1989) - Full Reaction

Comments

Need to check out Volunteers (1985) with John and a young Tom Hanks.

crazyivan

I noticed that. Fortunately, the reaction audio during the movie is fine. I listened to the Patreon (YouTube) full reaction to get the intro and outro. And I deleted the download after watching because massive file size. However, I have free software that I use to download YouTube videos at their max quality -- I used that to download the YouTube full reaction for Uncle Buck for future rewatches of the reaction -- the file size is only 1 GB and no audio issues.

Clay F

Hey Cassie... Im glad you watched this .. one of my favorite movies and very rewatchable.. the girl who played Tia is the same girl in Mr Hollands Opus that he almost left his wife to be with when she was going to NY to make it as an actress.. and yes this movie was pretty much the reason why McCauley Culkin was cast as Kevin in Home Alone.. and John Candy is in that as well.. Im glad you liked this one.. by the way.. Have a great Christmas and New Years.. I cant wait to see what more you have in store for us next year. Your reactions are the best and this is by far my favorite YT channel.

Johnny Bullis

the video on drop box is all messed up the start is muted the end is the start repeated and the file size is massive.

pat on

Finally got around to watching this one. I haven't seen this movie in so many years I had forgotten most of it. I can't believe how many of the lines my brother, sister and I quoted growing up came from this movie. A timeless classic. This one is definitely going in my Watchlist so I don't wait another 20+ years before rewatching it. Loved it! 🍿

Luke Godfrey

That’s funny to this day I think planes, trains, and automobiles is a classic snooze fest😂😂😂

(Nolo)finwe

John Candy was the polka guy for me too for many years, thanks to Home Alone. We used to watch that movie almost every Christmas during the '90s when I was a kid. It wasn’t until several years later that I saw him in another film, which I believe was Cool Runnings. This is a true '80s classic, capturing that distinct vibe only movies from that era had. It was a treat to revisit it with a reaction. Fun trivia: Amy Madigan, who played Chanice, is Mrs. Ed Harris.

Gábor Árki

The heart is warmed.

Terry Yelmene

She has seen it. That’s why it wasn’t on the Olympics poll in the summer😊

Cole Jennett

Cool Runnings is a good John Candy movie

Odd Thomas

For those of us who grew up with John, he was like an uncle to us and we miss him all the time!

Stuart Biegala

Yep, still pretty young

Ben Schwartz

Totally! Wait? Are you sure it wasn’t si-si-six-si-si-six-si-six-sixt-six-sixt-six-sixt-sixty-six times ;-)

Larry Darrell

Woah just read that he wrote and directed Curly Sue. Fun fact.

Chris Thom

Wonder if her kids would like Great Outdoors. I remember renting that like six times as a six year old.

Chris Thom

I love all of those. +1s on all. I was trying not to go too long on this one. Nothing But Trouble (1991) was my #1 favorite movie when I was a kid. Some folks have been unkind to its mentioning in the past, which ain’t right, IMO. It’s hilarious and kinda creepy. Not saying Cassie would like it, but it’d definitely be an interesting reaction. Dan Aykroyd’s Judge and Bobo characters are worth the price alone.

Larry Darrell

Summer Rental is hilarious - I’ve also enjoyed John Candy in Delirious / Nothing But Trouble / Who’s Harry Crumb?

Rose

This ain’t officially a Christmas movie, but very Fitting. Perfectly tender and works wonderfully for either the Thanksgiving or Christmas Season. John Hughes and John Candy are like Peanut Butter and Jelly. They’re best together. Two more films that they collaborated on, which I highly recommend are… The Great Outdoors (1988)… a great Family Summer Vacation film, directed by Howard Deutch (Grumpier Old Men/The Replacements) and written by John Hughes. Only the Lonely (1991)… a Lovely, less slapsticky, Romantic Comedy, written and directed by Chris Columbus (Adventures in Babysitting/Home Alone) and produced by John Hughes. one more film of John Candy’s that I highly recommend is… Summer Rental (1985)… my favorite summer film (next to Jaws ;-), directed by Carl Reiner (All of Me). This is a must watch every year. Back to John Hughes… since you’ll be watching a few of John Hughes’ films this December, I’ll spread out the recommendations a little. Two for now… Mr. Mom (1983)… hilariously written by John Hughes. (Some Uncle Buck moments may have originated here ;-) Michael Keaton’s breakout into leading roles, and also starring the beautiful Teri Garr. (R.I.P.) Dutch (1991)… a Planes, Trains and Automobiles like kind of Thanksgiving Road movie, written by John Hughes. John Candy may have been in the mind of Hughes when he wrote the character of Dutch Dooley, but the role wound up going to TVs Married with Children star, Ed O’Neill (Modern Family). O’Neill was perfect for the part though. Dutch is a Must Watch Thanksgiving through Christmas film for myself. Knowing how much you like Planes & Trains, I’m sure you’ll love this one. Highly Recommended. That’s all now. Really, Really, Really looking forward to Christmas Vacation. The 2nd Greatest Christmas Film Ever… right under It’s a Wonderful Life :-) And maybe the Most Quotable film ever. When you announced you were reacting to Christmas Vacation, my thought was… “If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am now.” — John Hughes ;-)

Larry Darrell

Never had that drink, not much of a vodka drinker.

Larry Darrell

+1 for Summer Rental (1985). Watch it every Summer.

Larry Darrell

+1 for Only the Lonely (1991)… produced by John Hughes, written and directed by Chris Columbus (Adventures in Babysitting/Home Alone/Mrs. Doubtfire) and also starring two other familiar leading ladies… Ally Sheedy and Maureen O’Hara in her return to the big screen after an 18 year absence. +1 for Only the Lonely (1991).

Larry Darrell

I was around in the 80’s and no one dressed like that where I’m from. There was a lot more denim😂

Cole Jennett

And I think you're thinking of Anthony Michael Hall.

Clarence Newman

I believe that was Ronnie Schroder. Ricky is the so-cute-I-could-die kid in The Champ (1979)

Clarence Newman

He was the geeky kid in Breakfast club? And the jerk boyfriend in Edward Scissorhands?

Chris Thom

John Candy was only 43??

Chris Thom

Haven't seen this in a long while, but my first on hand memories of it were Culkin asking a million questions, and that teen's shitty attitude. lol

Chris Thom

Cable also took the condom out of Howard the Duck's wallet. Have they no shame?

Chris Thom

If we screwed up like this on Reddit, we'd be toast.

R F.

And the one I was thinking of isn't even called Summer Vacation either. Lol. This interaction was a complete and utter shit show...but I'm not mad at it. Double lawl.

Chris Thom

I only know it from the DNCE song. Apparently, it means sex on the beach.

Clarence Newman

I recently watched some MASH so Col. Potter was front of mind. I've never heard the phrase "cake by the ocean".

Mike Lemon

As always 🥴🥴

Björn Karlsson

No argument from me. I would put Dom DeLuise alongside him for sheer likeability, but Dom couldn't pull off the serious stuff the way Candy could.

Clarence Newman

So true. Cassie strikes me as the kind of woman who thinks she's wimpy, but if someone threatened her kids, she'd turn into Sarah Connor.

Clarence Newman

'Meadow muffins', Mike.... Isn't that like 'Cake by the ocean'?

Clarence Newman

A mere amateur when compared to the legend that is Ricky Schroder.

Clarence Newman

It's not just the broadcasters that edit out original content...remember, Han Solo shot first. At least from what I remember from the original in 1977.

crazyivan

Are you talking about Amal again, Bjorn??

Clarence Newman

Well, the one time I noticed it was several years ago on The Disney Channel on Dish Network, before streaming killed satellite services.

crazyivan

Oh no. Now I've got a pity like! I know what she's saying: "It's either this or I'd have to watch his stoopid Ostrich and a Janitor movie."

Clarence Newman

Would put Culkin up there with Haley Joel as one of the best child actors of all time.

Chris Thom

Ah…the teenage years. It’s all ahead you Cassie 😬😉 Fun reaction! John Candy was so lovable! And the kids were all great. You can really see Macaulay Culkin’s comedic abilities. Even at such a young age. I can see why he was cast in Home Alone And the way the teens dressed. Very 80’s 😄

Robert da Spruce

Thanks Clay -- Mine was all fouled up, I thought it might've been a corrupt file, but I wasn't positive it wasn't all on my end... thank you for confirming it was lol... I'll have to poke around and see what the issue is.

Ben Schwartz

So glad you got to watch this finally Cassie! This is one of my two favorite John Candy movies, the other one being The Great Outdoors which was probably my favorite. Fantastic Reaction as always and thank you for that!!

Andrew Rose

I am dumb. I MEANT ... "Summer Rental" with John Candy.

R F.

Thanks. Didn't mean Euro (but it would be great). Got a video to look forward to then!

R F.

Great movie. It has been to long since I saw this movie. It was great to revisit it. Great Reaction, Cassie. Everyone needs an Uncle Buck. P.S. This makes up for that duck movie. Good job.

Rick Williams

Vacation is on the channel already. If you mean the National Lampoons one with Chevy Chase?

Chris Thom

"It’s crazy to thing they considered..." I don't know about this movie specifically, but those "they considered" facts are generally meadow muffins. "They" consider everyone who is the hot thing every time a movie is made. Only those that get through a couple auditions, or an offer is made, should get put in those "facts" - for example, Eric Stoltz for Marty McFly.

Mike Lemon

Just finished watching the reaction and this was great rewatching it again for about the hundred time. The multiple questions scene with Candy & Culkin always has me laughing. It’s crazy to thing they considered Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise amongst many other for the role as Buck. But it was just perfect for Candy. I also have to admit having a little tear in my eye when it finished with him smiling, so sad he was taken too soon.

Dean Holt

Sullen teen? You havent seen a sullen teen yet in a movie 😉 Have you seen a totally devastated teen i movie? OMG I'm so silly and drunk btw lol

Björn Karlsson

That movie poster is peak 80's.

Chris Thom

What more can be said, this is a classic for a reason. John candy was a Canadian treasure. Glad you enjoyed this one. My sister in law's family is related to John Candy so he is a family favorite.

Canadianant

I always watch this one on thanksgiving, along Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Vacation with Chevy Chase.

Brian Wood

Hi Casie. I love Uncle Buck. I was a senior in high school when this movie came out. The drop off at school took me right back to high school. I don't know if you noticed that Candy's girlfriend in the move was also in Streets of Fire

Vlad D

I am glad the the Amazon Prime Video didn’t edit out the kidnapping. It is over the top. Even back then, kidnapping is a serious time and you can go to jail for a long time. But this is just a comedy.

Clay F

I’m calling your bluff!😂 I think you’d trust him with your kids if you were in the next room, but that’s it, ha

Cole Jennett

John Candy in budgie smugglers? I'm in.

Clarence Newman

Of course they are especially Disney. Always have a hard copy of your favorites that can never be edited

David Freese

We need so Weird Science as well

David Freese

I hope so, too!

Rose

I always love that subtle joke at the end about the shocks. :D

Vwlss Nvwls

I’ll say it again thank you for watching this one, Candy is still one of my favourites comedy actors. Really sad that he left us too soon. But Uncle Buck my favourite film he’s done. Also loved him in The Great Outdoors, Stripes and Brewsters Millions.

Dean Holt

Still have “Summer Vacation” and “The Great Outdoors” to see of John Candy right?

R F.

I'm Buck Melanoma. 🤣🤣🤣

Zane From Canada

And Splash!

Cole Jennett

I could not start this reaction quick enough! First thing I said when I saw it posted was "Oh! She is going to LOVE this!!". This is certainly my favorite John Candy movie. This character is so John Candy, and I could not see anyone else in the role. Side note. I have a half-brother named Buck, so when my daughter was born... HE BECAME UNCLE BUCK!!! :D

Vwlss Nvwls

Cassie just dropped a like on my post!!!! Oh, wait.....

Clarence Newman

Seriously!?!? Are streaming services editing out scenes from the classics now? That's crap.

Zane From Canada

This movie was written by John Hughes. You know what else he wrote? The next movie on the docket: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and . . . Hughes also wrote the 90's Miracle on 34th Street which I have a feeling is going to be watched this year. That's a whole lotta Hughes, but that's OK because that is kinda cool.

Mike LL

In SUMMER RENTAL (1985) John Candy takes his family to Florida for a month-long beach vacation

Witchfinder General

Loved your reaction to another excellent film, Cassie! Had Carly already seen this one? or perhaps unavailable...? Seems like a movie she would enjoy.... Have you seen City of Ember? with a YOUNG Saoirse Ronan.....? I think you would enjoy that one as well. She actually has quite a few good films under her belt.....perhaps a Ronan Poll could take place in the future......? just a thought....

David Bennett

I strongly agree with this suggestion! Stripes is 80's comedy gold.

David Bennett

John Candy was inarguably one the warmest actors in film history. There's a reason John Hughes ends both this and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with him smiling.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Typically can’t go wrong with John Candy. Not as good, but Summer Rental is also pretty fun. Armed and Dangerous too. You get Eugene Levy and Meg Ryan in that one.

Shad Kanyak

Just don't watch Uncle Buck on a Disney channel. They edit out the kidnapping scene and 'golf lesson' with UB and Bug.

crazyivan

What a great way to start my weekend. I never tire of this movie. Every single time I watch it, I have a big smile on my face as the end credits roll.

Dan M

The John Candy charm. Enjoyed this rewatch of Uncle Buck, and your reaction. That was funny you thought of "Cassie Candy" Buck smoking at that school was acceptable back in the day if in a smoking area (not the hallway or bathroom). As a student at my high school in Texas in the early 1980's, when you turned 16, you could bring a note from your parent allowing you to smoke at lunch in the outside smoking area. High school students and teachers smoking together.

Clay F

This is about a year before "Home alone", so Macauley Culkin is a little younger here as "Miles" compared to "Kevin", but still just a great little actor for his age. Jean Louisa Kelly "Tia" did grow out of the moody teens to become "Mr. Holland's" temptress while he was getting his opus together. Amy Madigan "Chanice" also played "Annie Kinsella" to Kevin Costner's "Ray Kinsella" in "Field of Dreams" and she is also married to Ed Harris. I thought both "Tia" and "Chanice" may have been familiar for Cassie, but it has been some time some time since those movies. I having always had a fondness for John Candy and his movies and he was taken too soon. I keep thinking to revisit a more serious movie of his called "Only the lonely", I don't think it would win any popularity contests, but might be a February or November candidate, if I remember correctly. As for "Uncle Buck" I have always enjoyed it, and it has had different impacts though my life. This was especially true when I became an uncle myself. I did think at one point that if I was half as good of an uncle that "Buck" was, I would be doing okay. That is something I have always liked about it, and agree with Cassie, they didn't make him irresponsible with the kids, he actually tried very hard and become a better person for the experience.

Mojo One Thousand

The downloaded reaction is larger than typical at 12 GB. The only problem I had with the downloaded reaction was with a tiny portion of the audio: (1) the first part of the intro is no audio and (2) in the outro, the intro is dubbed over the outro. It was no big deal for me -- I just listened to the intro and outro on the patreon (youtube) version. For me, there was no problem with the downloaded reaction during the movie. Looked and sounded great.

Clay F

“That’s the fact, Jack!”

Dan M

Yep, not big on the sullen teen trope myself, whether female or male. The chip on their shoulder. At least it worked out here.

Clay F

Word. The only sullen teen I ever rooted for was Juliette Lewis in Cape Fear. And only then because all the other characters were obnoxious as hell.

Clarence Newman

I hadn't seen this since I was a kid. Fun watch despite Tia being absolutely insufferable, but I generally hate the sullen teen trope

Choof

Cassie, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it's one my of all-time favorites from when I was a little kid. I still remember how sad everyone was when he died... it was a huge loss for everyone. He was only 43 years old when he died. But we still have his movies... so he still lives on in that way, which is wonderful. ---- *****On another note, you might want to check out the downloadable version... it may or may not be corrupted, I had issues with it before just going to the direct link version. I apologize if someone's already said something to you about it, and it's possible that it's completely on my end. But it seemed like none of my video players could play it without a certain codec that I would have to pay for. VLC Player played it, but it was all corrupted. Again, may have just been on my end, but maybe double-check the file in dropbox.

Ben Schwartz

The beautiful daughter is Jean Louisa Kelly. She also played Rowena in Mr. Holland's Opus.

Shawn Kildal

Poor Cassie may have an Uncle Buck in her life. She seems to be experiencing more anxiety than joy from this.

TheSingulatarian

You've most certainly seen home alone. But that's one movie I wouldn't mind a rewatch with. Guaranteed viewings every Christmas!

rakesh

I'm glad you enjoyed this, Cassie. Now go watch "Stripes". John Candy, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis. Do I need to go on?

Clarence Newman

Picture this. It's the last two minutes of Super Bowl XXIII - 49ers v Bengals. The 49ers are behind and driving to try and win the game. Tensions are high in the huddle, when all of a sudden, Joe Montana turns to the most stressed guy of all, Harris Barton: Joe: "Hey H." Harris: What?" Joe: "Hey, check it out." Harris: "What?" Joe: Look down there, in the other end zone." Harris (looking): "Ok." Joe: "You see him?" Harris: "No." Joe (pointing): "There's John Candy, down there in the end zone." The whole huddle turns around, and there's John Candy eating popcorn in the endzone. Harris (with a smile, his tensions forgotten): "Ah yeah, that is John Candy, look at that." The official blows the whistle and the 49ers go win the game. Now that's what we call "presence".

Clarence Newman

John Candy was a treasure. He was kind and brought joy to everyone he was around, let alone all those audiences of his films. Gone too soon. Glad you enjoyed this one. I revisit it every few years myself.

Farbod

John Hughes was "Mr. Family Friendly Film" And yet he wrote some of the raunchiest things ever for the National Lampoon.

TheSingulatarian

You also saw John Candy in National Lampoon's Vacation as Wally World's bumbling security guard
