Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) - Full Reaction

This was a 90’s romcom, how did it go under my radar? Hugh Grant was perfect, I needed him back in my good books after he was the Paddington villain! We really had a great time with it, awesome supporting cast, funny AND lovey!

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) - Full Reaction

Andie MacDowell made it big with 'St. Elmo's Fire'. Was also in 'Sex, Lies & Videotape' and you're probably talking about 'Groundhog Day'. Kristin Scott Thomas, who played Fiona, is famous for 'The English Patient' and 'The Horse Whisperer' with Robert Redford, but you probably remember her from Tom Cruise's 'Mission Impossible'

JPDotCom23

Hahaha I totally forgot I saw this in theatre until I saw the rings, lol

JPDotCom23

it's good but Notting Hill, two Weeks notice, Nine Months Did you hear about the Morgans and Music and Lyrics are my fav's of his.

Ryan Towell

About a Boy is my favorite Hugh Grant movie.

Catherine LW

Just some notes :) A) b*gger is a bad word in the UK.... B) John Hannah is Scottish not Irish .... C) in the UK the number for the Police/ambulance etc is 999...... Great reaction.... I knew you'd both love it......

Scottish Joe

Yeah I don't know about that, lol

Bobby Salmon

Carly, I hope that you recover quickly without any residual problems. For Hugh Grant movies, the movies you two named are ones I enjoy. However, I really enjoy The Englishman Who Went up a Hill, but Came down a Mountain. Have you seen/reacted to that movie?

Stormseeker Gaming

Nominated for Best Picture Oscar

Clay F

Sending sympathy feels to Carly - I severely sprained my foot on Back to the Future Day right before my Halloween Party and it has been five weeks and I’m still healing ❤️‍🩹

Jason Dolan

I liked the movie, in a jealous of spoiled Hugh Grant but happy for him kind of way. "Oh my, his poor life, so many past girlfriends, gets invited to a million wedding (I've only ever been fortunate to go to my brother's which they barely at the last minute invited family to), and the one love of his life who keeps teasing him!" Didn't think it was as funny as the 1994 trailers made it appear to me though, Rowan (Mr. Bean) was kind of the comedic highlight although I did really like a lot of the characters, in particular Gareth ( and I think I got a crush on Scarlet). Gareth's actor(Simon Carlow) was the bad guy in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. He's also unexpectedly in the Disney+ show Hawkeye, which benefited greatly for being only one season or a miniseries. It's a GREAT short 6 episode wholesome but cool Christmas series in the MCU if you're up for it! 92% on RT!

YodatheHobbit

I assume she ended up looking at the definition? LOL.

Brian McGovern

Murtagh took care of it.

Clay F

Ya... I recognize this now. Great character actor... from a life of the party charmer - to - a witty-went-brainless scoundrel.

Terry Yelmene

Scarlett Johansson was 13 years old when she starred in the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer.

Clay F

+1 for Darkest Hour

Clay F

Fun reaction first time i've seen the film which is probably quite bad being a brit myself and how popular it was in the UK when it came out, I think Love is all around me by Wet Wet Wet was number 1 in the charts for many months. Also Cassie seems fine with swearing in British she even said bollocks at the end lol.

Gray

> it is often used as an exclamation Well technically yes, but that's more to do with the fact that (at least in English) swear words can be used as placeholders that take on different meanings based on context. You could make the same argument about the F-word, but I think we all know the F-word also has a specific meaning.

Ian Tonge

+1 for lost in translation. Also pitching again Green Card I think the remaining "big" movie in the 90s that Andie MacDowell was in.

rakesh

Also in slow horses on apple. Just started watching that!

rakesh

The important thing is that we English don't engage in such debauchery. Although the stingrays our sailors caught on the high seas a few hundred years ago would beg to differ.

Clarence Newman

Lovely conversation we're all having here. For Cassie's info, though, I've always seen b*llocks as closer to f*ck than balls, which would be the lighter version of b*llocks. Notice which one of those words I didn't feel the need to asterisk out for the sake of decorum. Definitely the lightest of the three words.

Clarence Newman

Don't worry that you've been tricked into becoming a potty mouth, Cassie. The word 'bugger', in the context Hugh (and therefore you) used it is no more vulgar than "whoopsie-daisies", which, as you already know, is what us Brits say every time we fall over.

Clarence Newman

Wonderful reaction ladies! Sorry you injured yourself Carly And of course your voice Cassie. Hope both of you heal up quickly There’s nothing quite like a British Rom-com. I really enjoy the humor and the friendship they had in this one. As others have mentioned. The actress you recognized is Kristin Scott Thomas. You may know her from the English Patient. She was also in the first Mission Impossible film Great pick for Tender November!

Robert da Spruce

Splendid reaction. Splendid. 😀 I hadn’t watched this movie in ages, so I only remembered bits and pieces, but it was highly entertaining, especially with the reactions. If I’m not mistaken, this was Hugh Grant’s big break that launched him to international fame, and the character of Charles left a lasting impression on his career, with many of his later roles being somewhat similar. That said, my favorite Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant film is still Notting Hill. For a lesser known suggestion I would like to highly recommend the movie KEEPING MUM (2005). It's a charming British dark comedy starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith and Patrick Swayze. PS: Rowan Atkinson will turn 70 in January 2025. How about having a dedicated poll to celebrate him? This could even become a new PiB tradition, hosting special polls for actors or directors on milestone anniversaries. PPS: my first comment is buried deep now, so here is the link again to the 15 minute long "sequel" of this movie made in 2019 with another wedding: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x752gdf

Gábor Árki

From what I can gather (first time watching myself) Fiona was the sister of one of his other friends. And since he's clearly aware of his issues with relationships falling apart rapidly he didn't want to potentially cause a rift that big and thus she was 'off the table' from early on in the friendship.

Laura Thornley

Thanks for watching this. It’s been awhile and I forgot how awesome it is. We really need to get you watching some Kristen Scott Thomas films. She is fabulous. I’m sure people are already recommending Gosford Park and the English Patient which are both wonderful. She was also in the Darkest Hour which is great. Less well known but also worth watching: Military Wives, Easy Virtue, and Keeping Mum. If you can get your hands on that last one…it’s kind of fantastic and hilarious.

Tinkerbell

Checkout, Yesterday (2019) for another film that belongs with those others. And also, worth noting in Richard Curtis’ induction speech, that he is the Co-Creator of Mr. Bean, alongside Rowan Atkinson.

Larry Darrell

I could not remember the ending to this. It was Great… I guess :-) Definitely loved it a lot more than I remembered. Richard Curtis knows how to make Rom Coms for Guys. Four Weddings, Notting Hill, About Time, Yesterday… are all films with a male lead that I can relate to. These are all some of my favorite films, with Four Weddings moving up a little in my Feel Good Film rankings. Out of those four… it still ranks 4th. I can’t say for sure if I would have made the same decision as Charles. As much as I love Andie MacDowell… See… Groundhog Day (1993) Bad Girls (1994) Multiplicity (1996) Michael (1996) The Carrie character, played by her, seemed possibly problematic. There were A Lot of red flags. Fiona, on the other hand, seemed like someone I’d like to get to know more. I mean what was wrong with her. I guess she was too good a friend to him, from his perspective. From my perspective, having just met these people, and having the feeling of looking for someone to love and someone to love me back… Fiona was it. That group of friends was the best part, and it only seemed right to marry within the friendship, so to speak. This group dynamic was very similar to the friends in Notting Hill. Those are the kind of friends I’ve always hoped to have. The sister’s birthday party/first date scene in Notting Hill, is maybe my favorite scene from any Rom Com. I couldn’t remember how Four Weddings ended, but I was really hoping he would go to Fiona. I just wasn’t 100% on Carrie. I was pretty sure she was only marrying Hamish for his money and stature. Fiona was the Duckie :-( Fiona was played by Kristen Scott Thomas, who both you saw in the first Mission Impossible (1996). She was a part of the team in the first mission, that went wrong. She is a very beautiful and talented actress, and to see more of her, I recommend… The Horse Whisperer (1998)… with Robert Redford and Sam Neill Random Hearts (1999)… with Harrison Ford Gosford Park (2001)… All-Star cast Murder Mystery by the creator of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for his screenplay. And especially Recommend, the 12 time Oscar nominated and Winner of 9 Academy Awards… The English Patient (1996) — This Reaction was a Delight. Thank You. It certainly was the perfect ending to… a One Fine Day ;-)

Larry Darrell

Cassie said in the intro (or pretty early in the reaction) that Notting Hill is her favourite Hugh Grant movie

Cole Jennett

Ok. Here it is,…”LOVE HARD”. It’s a “lame” Netflix rom-com; but it is actually pretty good. It’s got Jimmy Yang and Nina Dobrev; and 99% is cookie cutter drivel; but a couple times it hit me up side the head with some Awesomeness.

Uncle Phoenix

When it is used as a verb, yeah... but they weren't far away that it is often used as an exclamation like damn, that is how it has been used in TV ads for a couple of decades where I'm from, and by my dad for much longer than that.

Mojo One Thousand

Yay. I'm surprised that you and Carly haven't done a Knotting Hill reaction. You two would love that movie. It is definitely right up your alley.

Vlad D

holy crap! he for sure has been inducted

Cassie

Both Cassie and Carly (And their Mother) saw Kristen Scott Thomas in the opening scenes of the first Mission Impossible film.

Steve Holton

I think the Fiona situation was worth a looking into.

Larry Darrell

Some of the best are from the 30s and 40s.

Larry Darrell

Hah. The Kristin Scott Thomas aspect has always had me scratching my head. And good point, maybe they do deserve each other.

David D

+1 for The English Patient

Clay F

The English don't commonly call Scots sheep-shaggers, it's the Welsh - apparently the myth arose around the fact Welsh sheep-thieves would claim they were trying to shag the sheep if they got caught stealing one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXXNF_gBhkE

Witchfinder General

Kristen Scott Thomas played Fiona, who was the woman in love with Charles is in The English Patient with Ralph Fiennes. It is an epic Romance/ War movie. It won the Oscar for Best Picture and Director. Nine total Oscars out of twelve nominations and I highly recommend it.

Tara

Oh yeah thanks, how in the hell could have I forgot (not recognized) him as The Duke of Sandringham. I knew that I knew him from somewhere but for some reason didn't nail it.

Clay F

Don’t forget Gareth (Simon Calloway) who was The Duke of Sandringham

Tara

Great reaction, ladies. Watching this, I kept thinking of Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English (2003 - his spoof of Bond), and Hugh Grant in Lair of the White Worm (1988 - maybe a candidate for next SBNTS October, the whole cast seemed like they were having a blast making it). Ps - I’ve been to both hotels that served as The Boatman (one for the exterior shots, one for the interior shots - it’s said you can ask for the room with the actual four-poster bed from their first night together).

2-Can

Yeah, don't get married unless enamored with and love with all your heart the person. What a face that Charles (Hugh Grant) had standing on his initial wedding day. Carrie: "Our timing's been really bad, hasn't it?" Charles: "It's been bad, yes." Carrie: "It's been a disaster." Charles: "... been very bad. God, it's lovely to see you." But had a good ending. I voted for this movie in the poll. I now realize this is a first watch for me. I liked it. Agree that the movie has good side characters and with some character development. I am glad you are getting well over your cold. I like Andie MacDowell in Groundhog Day. I like Hugh Grant in Notting Hill (he is awesome at the banter) and in About a Boy (2002). A beautiful and tender movie I recommend is "Lost in Translation" (2003) starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. I kept picturing John Hannah (Matt) as Batiatus in Spartacus series. James Fleet (Tom) is Reverend Wakefield of Outlander. The Reverend studied Frank's genealogy history with Frank in Scotland. Lastly, the guy (actor Rupert Vansittart) at "The Lucky Boatman" hotel who Carrie avoided had such a recognizable voice to me as the lord in Braveheart who exercised his right under prima nocta to take that young bride into his bed on the night of her wedding. He was also Lord Dunsany who owned the Helwater estate where Jamie was paroled as a groomsman by Lord John Grey in early S3 of Outlander -- if you got that far in the series.

Clay F

I do love this movie, but I find the main characters insufferable. Carrie is clearly an awful person (as noted multiple times in the reaction), and who in their right mind would turn down Kristin Scott Thomas when she's throwing herself at you? Then again, Charles is awful too, so maybe he and Carrie deserve each other.

Ian Tonge

I was shocked when I read Richard Curtis’s IMDB. It was like a Popcorn highlight reel. He is great at writing for women; that being said, I instantly imagined him as a real life Melvin Udall from “As Good As It Gets”.

Uncle Phoenix

LOL. 😳

Uncle Phoenix

An old joke and I wish I could remember the comedian that told it but (paraphrasing)- In the U.S. they say West Virginians have sex with sheep, in England they say it is the Scottish, in Australia they say it is New Zealanders. I'm starting to think it is the sheep who are the sluts.

Mike Lemon

no im not

scott osborne

Robin Williams is hilarious in that movie!

Katie Jackson

The thing about Carrie is Charles never committed to her until the end. He never put it out there with certainty. Half way through the movie he tells her he loves her, in a roundabout sort of way, then HE seems to change his mind and go 'no silly idea', so from Carrie's point of view she's waiting for him to be the man, lead with confidence, and tell her what he wants

Witchfinder General

You're thinking of the Welsh and sheep

Witchfinder General

FYI, 'Bugger' means 'B#ttf*ck'

Witchfinder General

01:59:00 Never thought I'd hear Cassie say that!

John Drake

I’m going to have to bump that one up my list. I remember watching it and laughing so hard towards the end. I’m not really sure why I haven’t revisited it more.

Cole Jennett

This is a really good movie, but for me it’s maybe a tier below the Notting Hill’s and When Harry Met Sally’s of the world. I think my main issue was with Carrie. I don’t know if it was Andie McDowell or her character, but she didn’t work for me. The side characters on the other hand, I think they nailed! More so than the other movies I mentioned. Richard Curtis nails the side characters everytime!

Cole Jennett

i love this film iv seen it many times over the years in the 1st wedding i think you did not get the sheep joke il try to tell you it in a nice way the joke about the scots and sheep the guy is scottish so he is a sheep shagger i was just kidding there is no why to say it in a nice way but its a thing between the english and the scots but its all in a joking way and not to offend Cassie & Carly The word "bugger" has multiple meanings in British English, including: Offensive term: A rude word for someone who practices anal sex Interjection: An informal and impolite way to express anger or surprise, similar to "damn" Noun: A slang term for someone or something that is unpleasant, difficult, or contemptible Affectionate term: A humorous or affectionate way to refer to a child or person Verb: A slang term that means to ruin, complicate, frustrate, or tire Expression of dissatisfaction: A way to imply dissatisfaction with someone or something Expression of surprise: A way to express surprise

scott osborne

Hugh Grant is great in Notting Hill.

Clay F

Hugh Grant makes a great villain—he is hillarious and you love to hate him in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. His sour and snippy Oompa Looma in Wonka is the best (and maybe only really good thing) in that movie. I tend to find Evil & Grumpy Hugh Grant far more interesting. And, by the way, bollocks is a slightly lighter version ofsaying either balls or F**k.

D. T. Nelson

I love this movie Thank You…and an early plug for A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart😁, I think you said you would be doing this version earlier in the year !

Jimmy Stewart

Kristin Scott Thomas, who played Fiona, was also the lead in The English Patient an old fashion, epic in the tradition of David Lean, the Director of bridge on the river Kwai

Thomas Thompson

Oh yes, I'm sure everyone got my joke, but Cassie is getting better and proves she is recognizing more and more actors every week. And of course she is watching everything for the first time, she hasn't seen this movie 5 or 6 times like many of us. Not speaking of the 8 or 9 time I've watched THE MUMMY. (I'd still revoke her card if I could, but I don't have the powerrrrrr! (Said in Scotty's brogue, of course!))

Mike LL

I know you were joking, but just for others who are surprised by her lack of recognition. Don’t forget she likely has never revisited the movies since she watched them on the channel the first time.

Cole Jennett

I don't know what is more unforgivable - not recognizing John Hannah from the THE MUMMY! - or - not recognizing frickin Andie MacDowell from GROUNDHOG DAY seeing as she just posted a full reaction to GROUNDHOG DAY just yesterday!! For these incredible transgressions, I hereby revoke Cassie's Rom Com Viewing card for all time! She must never watch one again!!! Of course I am kidding, this is Popcorn In Bed at it's best, watching such a charming romcom as this one. Perfectly lovely reaction! (And I don't have the power to revoke anyone's card! Boo hoo! So sad! 😥😥 )

Mike LL

And bugger... uh... its actually quite a rude word in the UK (and elsewhere) - essentially its a shortening of 'buggery' which is an old term for 'alternative sexual activity'. So its really a soft-sounding equivalent to the f word.

Laura Thornley

Never saw this before. It was very charming and definitely british. As others have said the writer Richard Curtis also made Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones Diary and About Time. So I think he made Cassie's hall of fame by this point.

Choof

Wet Wet Wet's song 'Love is All Around' led the soundtrack and was a phenomenon in Britain topping the chart for 15 weeks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r2uqr55mpg

Witchfinder General

If you think Hugh Grant is a bad guy in PADDINGTON, wait until you see him in HERETIC.

Stick Figure Studios

Even though I had never seen this before I knew it would be enjoyed by the ladies. That is because they love "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually" which have the same writer as this Richard Curtis... pretty sure this movie is what brought him to prominence. The song in the first wedding that seemed familiar is "Love is all around" which was a massive worldwide hit for "Wet, Wet, Wet" based on it being in this movie... their version plays in the credits. The song is familiar because Bill Nighy's character in "Love Actually" releases a version of the song called "Christmas is all around", so it is a runner through the entire movie. Never much of a Hugh Grant fan, but I listened to him on "Smartless" a couple of days back and enjoyed it quite a bit. And, I did enjoyed his work in a couple of Guy Ritchie movies in the past 10 years, "The man from U.N.C.L.E" and "The Gentlemen", probably a couple of suggestions for the channel.

Mojo One Thousand

Of course it was going to be a perfect react. Cassie and Carly and the 4W&F friends were made for one another! Bravo!

Terry Yelmene

Glad you enjoyed the movie Cassie. There are a few romcoms that you haven't seen. Looking forward to Nine Months eventually

Katie Jackson

Screw the super hero and scary movies - give the ladies what they want - more rom coms. They aren't a new invention, they've been around for decades. Just remember the date night movies you saw in the 70's, 80's and 90's (and earlier). There are plenty to choose from. And more westerns, for gods sake.

crazyivan

Cassie, I won't post it here, but please look up the definition of the word "bugger".

Ben Livingstone

The first wedding reminds me of the time I was best man at my mate’s wedding. I pretended I had forgotten the rings and was searching in my pockets for it. We had arranged this beforehand of course. I saw a video of this later on and the camera person got a shot of a lady looking relieved and cracking up at the same time.

Brian McGovern

I remember the sister of a friend of mine was in love with Hugh Grant when this movie came out. I’m glad you liked it, it’s a favorite of mine.

Darren Harrison

Never saw him in the Paddington movies. But I've actually heard adults say Paddington 2 was one of the best movies ever made.

Chris Thom

Never seen this one either. Looking forward to the reaction. Feel better soon, Carly!

Brent Petty

The only surprising thing about this is that neither of you had seen it before. It’s the most Cassie and Carly movie ever. I’ve waited for this for 3 years and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

James UK

I'm so delighted you've finally watched this, Cassie. You are now back in MY good books after doing your impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger disposing of Sully in "Commando" back in September. "Sully. Remember when I said I would watch Four Weddings and a Funeral this month?" I cannot complete the line because it would be a spoiler. You'll just have to watch Commando next month.

Clarence Newman

I find that many are not aware of it, but this movie has a sequel in form of a 15m short film. If anyone is interested, it can be watched here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x752gdf

Gábor Árki

You know, I've never watched this movie despite knowing about it for almost thirty years. Maybe the time is now. Also there's a spoof of this movie called Three Fights Two Weddings and A Funeral. Never watched that either.
