[YT Edit] Superman II
Added 2024-11-24 01:13:46 +0000 UTC
Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "Superman II" which will premiere shortly!
I had a feeling you wouldn't like the ending of that one lol. That version seemed a lot cheesier than I remember and had a lot of dodgy cuts. Superman III is far superior and is probably my favourite of all the Superman films.

The villains were a bit more hardcore than their outfits suggested. Amongst all the cheese I thought they were pretty memorable.

Christopher Reeve was the best Superman, it’s too bad the movies he played Superman in weren’t that good. Superman I and II are fun from a nostalgia perspective but really weren’t very well written. They remind me of the silver age Superman comics where they’d create a problem for him and then just give him new powers to solve that problem - lazy writing. I know Man of Steel isn’t liked by a lot of people but I wish these movies had a little more of that vibe and less corny jokes and deus ex machina powers.

A week and a half ago, when I watched the movie (a first watch) along with the full reaction, I had some positive comments. Yet, now that I've had more time to digest, I didn't really like the movie. Seemed too cheesy. I don't have the benefit of nostalgia. I like the first one better.

I agree that the Donner cut's reveal was much better than this one, but even Donner's had a major flaw. But I can't discuss until Cassie has watched the Donner cut! Too big a spoiler!

This was great. I had never seen it in its entirety. Luther was so fun in this, as opposed to the first one, where I found him kind of annoying. My one question: When Zod and his crew are destroying the town with the wind...does that whole place smell like their bad breath? 😆

I think you're confusing the characterization of a character with a plot detail. Saying that Zach Snyder seems to think of Superman as someone to be afraid of rather than as someone who is aspirational is not discussing any plot elements. I feel quite confident that it someone hadn't seen any other Superman movies and read my comment beforehand and then later saw these movies, they would not have the plots spoiled for any of them.

"And the Zack Snyder Superman movies for some reason turn Superman into a terrifying creature that people should be afraid of rather than inspired by, and who grows up being told it's OK to let people die to protect your secret identity. "
You could have more easily said- 'Snyder had a take on Superman I didn't like.' But judging by the attitude, I think I have my answer.

Which "major plot points" are you referring to? I didn't say anything specific about anything. Or do you feel like it's spoiling a movie to give away that Lex Luthor has an evil plan? Spolier: the supervillain wants to do something bad. Hope I didn't ruin the movie by saying so, my bad.

There is a really good Channel 4 documentary, The Curse of Superman, made in the early 2000s on the history of Superman and how almost all major players associated with it have suffered a calamity in their life. It has interviews with actors Margot Kidder, Susannah York and Dean Cain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jPx7c026YY

Despite the ending, the restored Brando footage makes it a better film.

He’s in the Donner Cut, which, imho, is the superior version.

You just can't help giving away major plot points can you? Do you do it for fun or can you really not see?

“Flash Gordon” (1980) is one of my chief guilty pleasures. Corny dialogue, cheap production design, overacting, and garish color palette, all to a rocking Queen soundtrack - what’s not to love?
I remember waiting for it to be released after reading the Arthur Byron Cover novelization as a pre-teen, and sitting in a freezing town hall in Scotland that once a month was converted into a movie theater, but whose heating happened to be on the fritz that night long ago.
I am aware that my love for the movie is heavily influenced by nostalgia, so I am wary that a newcomer approaching it in 2024 without those trappings might not appreciate it.

I recently saw the Christopher Reeves documentary Super/Man, and I highly recommend it. I can't really recommend any other Superman movies though. Superman III and IV are mainly only enjoyable in the "so bad it's good" sense. Superman Returns is like an homage to these first two movies and pretends 3&4 never happened, but Lex Luthor's "big evil plan" is so stupid it basically ruins the movie. But if you want to see Kevin Spacey doing a Gene Hackman impression and Brandon Routh doing a Christopher Reeves impression, that's about all it has going for it. And the Zack Snyder Superman movies for some reason turn Superman into a terrifying creature that people should be afraid of rather than inspired by, and who grows up being told it's OK to let people die to protect your secret identity.
By the way, since you kept asking whether Superman or Clark Kent was who he "really is", this is discussed at the end of Kill Bill Vol. 2, but I can't remember if you've seen that or not.

There are some classic’s in there Ben!
I wonder if Cassie has seen Flash Gordon? Before PiB.
I wonder what would Cassie make of it?!! Zany, camp, bonkers movie! So I think it would make for a great reaction.

I forgot about the goofy gags! in the movie. It didn’t quite fit right. But, I still enjoy it, a blast from my childhood. Terrance stamp is just awesome for me in any movie he is in.
Not sure about Superman 3, there are some good points in it, but it mostly fails to deliver for me.
Don’t get me started on Superman 4!
Great reaction as always Cassie. Thank you for brightening my morning.

Great reaction, Cassie - "Superman 2" is indeed highly entertaining and as a kid I loved the scenes in which Superman kicks ass... especially at the diner bully - what a jackass... - Btw I think the new documentary about Christopher Reeve is coming to be a real tearjerker, - I have to see it, but I need a good supply of tissures in doing it...

Yes, Cassie have to see "Superman 3" and then "Superman IV" - just for the sake of it, - and the legacy ... and the story how it put the final nail in Cannon Films' coffin ...

The terrorist in the Eiffel tower that says "it started" is Richard Griffiths who played Uncle Vernon Dursley in the harry Potter films. And Cliff from Cheers is in the nasa control center.

I prefer the theatrical because it’s a more complete movie. In the Donner cut, he uses the same ending from the first film with Superman spinning the Earth again.

I grew up watching the old school superhero movies like Superman, Wonder Woman, Incredible Hulk, Swamp Thing, Flash Gordon, Captain America... and of course, Batman (both Tim Burton's and the 60's move AND show) -- plus the 70's animated Spiderman. They're the only superhero movies I'll watch these days. I'm just not the least bit interested in any of the recently-made superhero movies, and I couldn't be less interested in Marvel. But those old superhero movies? Chef's kiss!

No memory loss, Cassie...they were play acting. I think you know the Superman comic came out in the 1930s. And there was a TV program about Superman in the 1950s.

I was 7 when I saw this the first time and of course I loved it. I still have nostalgia for it and it remains goofy fun, as long as you ignore obvious, glaring story issues. As always, Reeves is stellar and he remains an iconic Superman - the gold standard for everyone that followed. And Zod (Stamp) is of course awesome - the whole trio, but especially Stamp. I personally am not a fan of the 2 films that follow, but I do think PIB should check out Man Of Steel (flawed in its own right).

The Richard Donner cut has a much better reveal of Lois figuring out he’s Superman. Not the ridiculous chipping into the fire.
