Son In Law (1993) - Full Reaction

Haha well this was out there but what do you know, I think I might have even liked it! If you figure out what you’re watching, then you can kind of appreciate it for what it unapologetically is! I am craving a homegrown Thanksgiving dinner now!

Son In Law (1993) - Full Reaction

Comments

why you going to Disneyland?.. over priced overrated satanic garbage

tgriexterminator

I am glad you added in that "Editor Cassie" note at the end. At first when you were giving your initial reaction, you didn't seem that enthusiastic after watching the movie, yet for 95% of the watch along, your face was in a permanent smile. It was great to watch this family favorite (in my family) film for Thanksgiving.

Adam Doyle

Now you have to DO In THe Army Now

tgriexterminator

Paully Shore still a strong stand up. Good Material, still entertaining

tgriexterminator

Yup.

Jason Pratt

I feel like if Rebecca knew that Travis had been sleeping with Tracy the whole time she was away at college, Tracy would not have been asked to stay for Thanksgiving dinner! Yes, she was drugged and dragged, from the bar to the barn... but that doesn't give her a get-out-of-jail-free card!

fire12wife

Brendan Fraser cameo in this is from his and Pauly Shore movie the year before called Encino Man (1992) and it's a way better movie imho, check that out one day, Fraser and even Shore sometimes shines in that one

DreBone1986

Yes, it was definitely Brendan as Link! Encino Man (1992) wouldn't have worked without Brendan! He was awesome in that movie! Same with Blast from the Past (1999)! I agree with Cassie that the movie should've been longer... we want to know more and there's so much story left to tell! They are working on a sequel with both Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone! I'm here for it!

fire12wife

If you're edged 'cause I'm weazin all your grindage, just chill.......no wheezin tha juice

Chris Retzlaff

Encino Man would be a great reaction. I'm pretty sure that it's not just Brendan Fraser it's actually Link as the Cameo. I completely forgot about that.

Chris Retzlaff

Pauly Shore is definitely an acquired taste so no one will fault you for finding him 'weird'. That's his schtick. I do watch this one every Thanksgiving. Another one I watch and a great one for both you AND Cassie is The Prince and Me - which also takes place over college Thanksgiving break and is more of a princess diary-esque rom-com, heavy on the rom...

Emily Gray

I really find him intolerable.

Stick Figure Studios

ENCINO MAN, while not at all a good movie, is mostly tolerable because of Fraser.

Stick Figure Studios

I grew up with this movie love it

Tristan Ryan Cox

Haha. Whenever people don't know about a movie, remember that no one got your Overboard Halloween costumes. 😀

Liz Painter

A better selling point for her with Sean Astin would be LOTR

Cole Jennett

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is on my personal request list. It’s not near the top, but it’s on there

Cole Jennett

Ooh, made a note and forgot to mention… During the beach scene, the song “Perfect World,” by Canadian Rock band, Alias was playing. I love this song, and I’ve loved it since I heard it in another movie, from one year earlier… Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991)… starring Christina Applegate Cassie definitely needs to see this film. It’s right up her alley. It’s so much fun. In case you missed it, here is an awesome Uplifting Song from that awesome music and movie period where the 80s bled into the 90s. Originally by Tonio K. in 1986, covered by Alias and released on the, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead soundtrack (Whole album great by the way :-)… “Perfect World” by Alias https://youtu.be/rK4gpmLsXaQ?si=r92QoiLMi7M_Dl6I and for the Music Video featuring clips from Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (Spoilers)… https://youtu.be/bUtEjvZwHko?si=KuEPF2yew8RDqeHy This is another of those songs you may find yourself singing at the top of your lungs driving to work… just saying ;-)

Larry Darrell

Brendan Fraser had a cameo in this movie because he did the movie Encino Man (1992) with Pauly Shore just a year before this movie! This is where I BEG you to watch Encino Man (1992)... Yes, Pauly is still Pauly in that movie, too, but not nearly that cheesy. Brendan plays a great role in Encino Man (1992) and Sean Astin stars in it as well. He was in The Goonies (1985)! Anyway, I just hope you'll give it a chance! Thanks for the great reaction, and I hope you're feeling better! ♥

fire12wife

This was actually enjoyable. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen any Pauly Shore movie, and wasn’t sure if I’d still be able to see the charm in his persona or not. I did. It was, as others are perfectly putting it, Harmless Fun. When I was a kid, I never watched this one that much, and parts of it did make me uncomfortable even then. There’s something about an outsider coming in to a nice household and wrecking things that has always given me tension. I think it might have begun with the film, Neighbors (1981). That was like a horror film for me growing up, and kind of still is. Encino Man (1992) and Bio-Dome (1996) were the films that I owned on VHS and watched them all the time. Pauly wasn’t the lead in Encino Man, and still holds up today, as a fun turn your brain off movie. Bio-Dome I can’t speak for, because I haven’t tried in a long time. I do remember Kylie Minogue though ;-) Pauly Shore in Son in Law, was Charming and Sweet at times and that made the movie for me. There wasn’t anything so disgusting or crass in the film to make you want to turn it off. It’s not going to become one of my Thanksgiving staples, but if the chance ever comes again to watch it, I’ll check it out, and enjoy myself again. Cassie was laughing and smiling all the way throughout. If that’s not a good enough recommendation for a good time, then you’re taking these kinds of movies too seriously. They were never meant to win any awards, and were never aiming to be a piece of art. They are meant to make you smile and at the very least, have a good chuckle. Mission Accomplished. There are tons of enjoyable films like this throughout the 80s and 90s, that still work today. It wouldn’t hurt Hollywood to look back to this time and take some notes. Cassie… if you’re looking for another Thanksgiving film to take this spot next year, or one last fill in this year, please consider… Dutch (1991) Starring Ed O’Neill, most likely known to you from Modern Family. Written by John Hughes, who wrote and directed, the greatest Thanksgiving film, Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). Dutch is also another hilarious Road Trip movie, that is Perfectly Tender… just like your Thanksgiving Turkey :-) Only Dutch ain’t no turkey ;-)

Larry Darrell

and Kylie Minogue… and the Classic 80s Sleaze ball character actor… William Atherton. (Walter Peck)

Larry Darrell

Not a bad dude. Not deserving of all the hate. He was who he was, and as far as I know, never harmed anyone.

Larry Darrell

I really knew nothing about this movie, so I thought when it was over I would just say "Well that is a movie we all saw together." But I did actually enjoy it, as someone else said, it was harmless. Definitely liked the second half more than the first half.

Mike LL

Saw this in the theater with a friend and his ex-hippie mom as kids. I remember some laughs. She thought Paulie was so cute and funny and reminded her of her friends from her youth. We had fun and she was a cool lady for taking us. Looking forward to Cassie's reaction.

clutchkman

Pauly Shore was, and is, a no talent hack. Like all the other Hollywood nepo-babies he’d have been no one if it weren’t for his parents, who founded and owned The Comedy Store. He “earned” everything he’s got by clinging to mama’s apron strings. There’s a reason his career dried up to nothing but the occasional tv appearance after just a small handful of movies.

Just Plain Bob

There's a bunch of great Thanksgiving movies out there. At least I remember growing up seeing a large amount. Of course most are wacky unintellectual comedies like this one. Most people just seem to suggest only a select few.

YodatheHobbit

Is it REALLY that hard for people to not be an asshole? Honestly? How would you like being talked about like that? Being a good person isn't rocket science.

YodatheHobbit

Okay, now say that to their faces.

YodatheHobbit

I had forgotten that they don't end up getting married in this movie, and they don't even really kiss. Huh.... Minus the cheesy over emphasis on the custom slang which I like in limited amounts but starts to get grating by film's end when the other characters repeat it, as a native Californian I actually really find the friendly peaceful 90s modern hippie characters Pauley plays really likable. Most cali-valley stereotype dudes in movies don't have as much heart. Character's like him and Michelangelo of the TMNT are who I feel like I should be inside, but negatives things in the world around me and feelings of failure stress me out to keep me from being that pure. They are who I planned to be as a kid.

YodatheHobbit

ok yes!!! thank you, could not figure it out from glancing at his imdb! that was it!

Cassie

haha i should have yelled “subscribe to popcorn in bed” as they walked by to be heard in the steam!

Cassie

the brendan fraser bit i thought they were spoofing when he did george of the jungle haha

Cassie

A black day for PiB

V M

Pauly Shore was pretty popular when I was in high school, we pretty much played us.. the Valley stereotypical dude., Encino Man is a national treasure of a film. It's just so fun. Stars Pauly, Sean Astin, Brendan Frasiers major debut, and a few others in bit parts or cameo's. But its a fun film. It also has a lot of heart in the crazy, goofiness of it all.

Ryan Towell

Tracy isn’t 100% innocent. Toward the beginning when Rebecca calls Travis, you can barely hear him say “dammit Tracey” before he picks up the phone. Then he says he’d be right down. So those two were canoodling almost as soon s as Rebecca left. Maybe even before that.

Jason Pratt

Another fun silly shore movie is "Bio-Dome" it has Steve Baldwin , and Joey Adams who I just adore,

Somehiguy

I think Encino Man is the only one left she needs to see now.

Cole Jennett

In case you haven’t looked it up already, the dad in this is the prosecutor from “My Cousin Vinny”.

Jacob Lunbeck

Pauly Shore was always one of those characters that sort of played the same character in everything. At least that I saw. Was able to be fun, but you sort of had to be in the mood for *that.* Cause if you went in expecting something else you were bound to be dissapointed. I liked Encino Man. You noticed Brendan Fraser and I thought for a moment you knew the movie, but you just the knew the actor I suppose since you didnt get the reference. So if you want to know what that little cameo was about, watch Encino Man at some point. In the Army Now was mildly entertaining. Cant think of anything else that he was in that I liked. Son in Law and Encino Man were probably my two top Pauly Shore movies that I can recall...

Miguel

I know. I saw that after I had posted.

Brian McGovern

Good reaction, as usual. As for the movie, I went in with low expectations but liked it. Different seeing Carla Gugino so young. Still recognized some of her mannerisms, expressions, and sound of voice at times. Flea (bass player in Red Hot Chili Peppers) was the tattoo guy. Agree that the butterfly on the lower leg is classic (not that original). "I popped your daughter's trunk." Crawl seem to grow on you -- though you weren't happy with his erratic behavior on the corn field. I thought Travis was cast perfectly. The mother is pretty. You may remember her as the mother in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Tiffani Thiessen (who played Tracy) was also in Saved by the Bell and 90210. She played an assistant to the Joe Rogan character in "News Radio" which I liked that series (and liked Joe Rogan more back then). "So I didn't bone her. So he didn't bone me. So you guys didn't bone." That was slick the end the way they slow down the engagement without admitting it was initially a ruse. The movie was hard to watch at times, but had it's moments. Pauly Shore was not quite as irritating as I thought he would be. I rate the movie at 2.5/4. Gave me a positive feeling. Glad I watched it. Some other Thanksgiving movies to consider: *Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) *Pieces of April (2003). Katie Holmes *Four Brothers (2005). Mark Wahlberg

Clay F

The actress who played Rebecca - Carla Gugino was also in the fantasy comedy “Night at the Museum” with Ben Stiller, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Owen Wilson, and Ricky Gervais. “Son in Law” is a movie I had always wanted to watch, but never got around to it. Glad to watch it first as part of this watch-a-long.

Darren Harrison

Cassie determined that in the reaction.

Clay F

Early in the reaction, she looked up that actress and saw the actress was the mom in Haunting of Hill House.

Clay F

Yeah, was nice change of pace from last month. That's a good way to characterize the movie.

Clay F

There are even funner Pauly Shore movies now that you're initiated. Encino Man, it had an Easter egg in here.

Brian's Dog

You recognize the dad from My Cousin Vinny

Budsfan67

Just finished your reaction. I was a little nervous going in but you seemed to have a lot of fun with it. It’s dumb but harmless, and a nice change of pace from last month which was why I think you watched it😊

Cole Jennett

This is classic Pauline Shore and was a good time I’m not going to lie. Also, the actress who plays the daughter is the mom from Haunting of Hill House.

Mario Serra

Kai Cenat didn't realize who he was in the presence of ! (IG story)

Philip G.

😆 I was about the right age to enjoy Pauley Shore in his heyday. He's definitely an "out there" character. Have a happy Thanksgiving, and "munch on some grindage!" 🤣

Tom Evans

Don't forget about gunpowder milkshake and sucker punch

Vlad D

I think you should watch Encino Man next…if you haven’t already.

Henry

And it's still hilarious

Philip G.

I was on location as they filmed the beach scene together around Santa Monica & Venice Beach That's about the only good thing I can mention about this movie 🍿🍿

Bill Maurer

..starring Pauly Shore, ok you lost me.

Shane Drum

This is an old favorite. I forgot how much I can still quote. Brendan Fraser’s cameo is an inside joke to another movie Encino Man (1992) which is great. Also recommend Pauly Shore’s other movies In The Army Now (1995) and Biodome (1996).

Blake Evans

Lower Decks. Great episode!

Kristin D

Son in Law is what happens when a terrible script is poorly directed into an awful movie starring an actor devoid of talent.

Just Plain Bob

I am a fan of Carla Gugino. I especially liked her in the Showtime TV series "Californication" (w/David Duchovny). She did excellent in The Haunting of Hill House. She is a great actor and beautiful. I remember Pauly Shore as an MTV VJ but don't think I have seen any of his movies. This a first watch of Son in Law for me.

Clay F

One of the most beautiful women in modern cinema, IMO.

Dan M

To each his own

Dan M

was never really a big Pauly Shore fan (In the Army Now is probably the movie of his that I enjoy the most) but this had some moments here and there; think Carla Gugino is way underrated as an actress

JL_83

Guilty pleasure?

Dan M

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that you’re going to attempt a Crawl impersonation at least a couple of times throughout your reaction. I’ve been really impressed by some of your other renditions of movie characters.

Dan M

I have a lot of empathy for Paulie Shore after seeing him on Joe Rogan. It was so sad. He was so famous for fifteen minutes and then he had to become a living trivia answer.

Uncle Phoenix

You may be remembering Travis the boyfriend from the TNG episode about the young crew members, he played the one trying to impress Riker

Choof

Carla Gugino ages like a fine wine. Excellent in Sin City and Watchmen

rakesh

I was looking at the credits and Carla Gugino is in it. She was the mother from The Haunting of Hill House.

Brian McGovern

Watching Pauly Shore for longer than a hundredth of a nano second is a fate worse than death

Rosario Cicero

Because it's a fun movie?

Mike Lemon

"Every once in a while you need an obscure movie"? Oh, do I have some recommendations for you. The obvious being, Indictment: The McMartin Trial (1995), but I have a bunch of others on the Popcorn app.

Mike Lemon

Thanksgiving should be retired as a movie genre to choose from on this channel haha.

Pickupthepieces76

Why?

Rosario Cicero

Could of watched a great comedy like Captain Ron, but we got this instead because it's Thanksgiving 🤷‍♂️
