[YT Edit] Some Like It Hot (1959)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "Some Like It Hot", which will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] Some Like It Hot (1959)

Comments

Our entire family loves "The Great Race"!

Maria Torres

Absolutely agree, Clay. There's no manual for how to do it, when to do it, how often etc, so we just have to do what we feel. As long as it's (also) in Cassie's best interests, it's all good fun. As for your thoughts on the likelihood of Cassie Popcorn Picking The Great Race this month.....you're saying there's a chance.

Clarence Newman

There are thousands upon thousands of movie suggestions in the comments on the channel (you alone have made hundreds). I make suggestions. Did make sense to plug it while Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are fresh in her mind. Plus, I like you being positive. Also, I did not realize others had mentioned it. Would have to be a popcorn pick I would think b/c I don't see it winning a poll (unless maybe in a classics poll -- but even that may be a challenge). As for popcorn pick, I was thinking 1 in a million chance but let's say at best a 1 in 1000 chance of being a popcorn pick -- but no one knows. Your approach of making large numbers of suggestions may be a good approach in playing the odds in that one may hit. Plus, exposes her to titles of good movies. Others take the opposite approach in recommending the same movie (only one movie) over and over (see, e.g., Phillip G.) or the same handful of movies over and over. Their name becomes associated with that sole movie or a couple of movies. Is The Great Race (1965) in your top 5 or top 10 suggestions for a popcorn pick? Probably not. But you thought made sense to mention it b/c of the current relevance of Curtis/Lemon, and b/c others mentioned the movie. Makes sense. I think the people around her -- her team -- people who advise her and she trusts -- have influence. Also, a few long-term patrons she is familiar with she likely gives more thought to their comments.

Clay F

Seconded for the fifth time.....

bgb1975

Maybe, maybe not, but it's still worth taking a shot. There are a ton of great movies Cassie hasn't watched and will never even notice if we don't mention them, so that's what we do. I've suggested a lot of films on here, but the only ones I really plug are ones where others jump on and say they like them too. It then turns into a movie that Cassie will probably enjoy AND a lot of her patrons will look forward to. In the Some Like It Hot and last Upcoming posts, there are a lot of comments suggesting and discussing The Great Race, not all by me and not all of them started by me. After a couple of weeks of seeing it come up in lists and discussions, I thought it was a good idea to do a dedicated plug, especially as Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are fresh in her mind right now. I agree The Great Race probably wouldn't win a poll, but who knows what Cassie will do with her Popcorn picks? I've lost count of the number of times she's said something along the lines of "I've had sooo many recommendations for this so I've been wanting to watch it for a long time." I don't expect her to react to it this month or even soon, Clay, but it's a fun movie and it's well worth shining a light on.

Clarence Newman

Indeed. That was the one where I 'got it' with her.

Scott Macaulay

I doubt she ever reacts to THE GREAT RACE (1965). I don't see it winning a poll or being a popcorn pick. But who knows.

Clay F

Helen Kane had the cutest voice. I've got a few of her songs, one of which is "I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat" from Sylvester and Tweety Pie.

Clarence Newman

Marilyn at her most mesmerising.

Clarence Newman

I'm going to take another shot at plugging THE GREAT RACE (1965), which has been mentioned a lot on these Some Like It Hot posts. Multiple people, multiple times, multiple degrees of veracity. It's virtually a campaign at this point. Another dose of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, Cassie. Flash cars and gadgets, romance and suffrage, music and punch-ups, pie fights and brandy, plus Peter Falk at his most delightfully devious. And you will love the clothes the ladies get to wear. It's all Victorian lace, pinched waists and parasols, with those flamboyant hairstyles you could hide a small animal in. It will give you the excitement of a sports movie, the tenderness of a rom-com, and the most likable bad guy since Wile E. Coyote! How could you not?

Clarence Newman

I highly recommend Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for the ultimate Marilyn experience.

Scott Macaulay

meet me in St. Louis is a great movie for all holidays

zynjams

I love both movies!

Mike LL

No the US. But yesterday afternoon You Tube allowed the TV version to be accesses.

Ronald Carpenter

The model who became an actress who became an icon who could also sing. I think that covers it.

Clarence Newman

You need to watch Ninotchka from 1939 with Greta Garbo. It's smart, funny, romantic and would be great movie for you based on this reaction. Love the channel!

Ron White

As Christmas approacheth, here’s another heads up about two Christmas classics for December…. “MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS” and “THE BISHOP’S WIFE” …since we’re on the subject of classics:)

Patreot

Cassie, you have probably figured out already that Tony Curtis was doing a Cary Grant imitation

Doc Larry

Ok that's what I thought. When Cassie said Marilyn was a singer who learned to act, that sounded backward. Pretty sure she worked with some pretty prominent acting coaches over the years.

Chris Thom

Are you in Canada?

Chris Thom

Oh interesting. Watching this vid last night I kept thinking of Betty Boop and I wasn't sure why. Was trying to remember if that song was in Who Frames Roger Rabbit.

Chris Thom

I may be biased because I've always loved this film, but I think this is one of Cassie's best reactions ever.

Silver Machine

This is the third or fourth one with copyright problems in a month. They might want to think about bumping up the Rumble release schedule.

Mike Lemon

Still says "FORST TIME WATCHING"...

Clarence Newman

The scene in the big dining room in Gentleman Prefer Blondes has to be seen to be believed. There have been a lot of beautiful actresses over the years, but very few who had the magnetic power that Marilyn shows in that scene. Watch the movie and you'll have an answer to the question, "How do you make a whole Jane Russell disappear?"

Clarence Newman

A little more trivia, because that's who I am... George Raft, who plays Spats, was part of the Warner Brothers Studio line up of actors specializing in gangsters: James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Humphrey Bogart. Like Cagney, Raft was something of a song and dance man, and he had talent. But life kept getting in the way, including real life connections to gangsters, and Raft kept turning down roles, many of which went to Bogart. As a result, Raft's professional life faltered, and Bogart's rose. The two of them did act together in a very interesting movie about the truck driving industry, "They Drive By Night". The coin tossing bit was popularized by Raft, which is why it's done here.

Maria Torres

Some trivia for you: "I Wanna Be Loved By You" was composed by the team of Kalmar and Ruby, who wrote songs for the Marx Brothers. The original singer of "I Wanna..." was Helen Kane, perhaps most famous an inspiration for Betty Boop. A fictionalized biopic of Kalmar and Ruby was made in the 1950s, with Fred Astaire and Red Skelton. It isn't a good movie, but I love it. Here is their version of how and when "I Wanna..." came to be. The Helen Kane actress is none other than Debbie Reynolds (Mother of Princess Leia Carrie Fischer). But dubbed in the actual voice of Helen Kane. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TClltL5AZs

Maria Torres

Osgood is played by comic actor Joe E. Brown, famous for his foghorn yell of despair and/or surprise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jphqyhr6TGg Brown was a supporting player in the 1930s adaptation of "Midsummer Night's Dream", playing opposite James Cagney. Brown played Flute the Bellows Mender, who, in the play within the play, is the heroine, Thisbe. So Brown was also in drag in the movies. I wish I could find a clip of him but YT isn't cooperating, so you'll just have to find, watch, and enjoy the whole movie....

Maria Torres

Both black and white and color movies were made throughout the classic Hollywood era. Color films like “Gone With The Wind” and “The Wizard Of Oz” (you’ll recall) were already being made in the 1930s. Both remained popular and were chosen according to the expressive needs of a given film or else for budget reasons from the 1930s-1960s. But by the 1970s, black and white was largely abandoned in favor of color.

Patreot

Which accounts for Jack Lemmon snapping at him: "Nobody talks like that!"

Maria Torres

I never much liked this movie (except for Marilyn of course,) but Cassie's reaction made it fun!

clutchkman

Its working now but wasn't earlier. Go figure?

Jim Staab

I waited forever for you to react to "Some Like It Hot" but the TV channel says the content was blocked for copyright. What the heck? I saw at least a dozen other channels reacted to the movie with no problems, channels like "Ashleigh Burton" and "Dawn Marie" and "OGB" and "American Mum" and "Movies with Mia" and "James vs Cinema". Get on the phone and ask what YouTube is up to!

Ronald Carpenter

For more Marylin Monroe, I recommend watching “GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES” next. By the way, Marylin was actually an actress who sang, rather than a singer who acted.

Patreot

Sorry for misunderstanding. I thought you meant here on Patreon. Yes it is blocked on YouTube. Sorry for my confusion.

David Freese

The copyright overlords strike again! The reaction was blocked by copyright, but I am sure Ben will have it back again soon

Dave

Thanks for reacting to this classic, Cassie! You would really enjoy “SABRINA” by this same director, the great Billy Wilder. It stars Audrey Hepburn. (You already watched the modern remake of “Sabrina,” which is good, but the original is a true masterpiece. ) Also, for another great Jack Lemmon comedy, watch “THE ODD COUPLE.” It’s a perfect script and one of the greatest comedies of all time.

Patreot

Just checked. It's there but says "Video unavailable" (though it also shows 19k views). While it's being fixed, Cassie, I might as well mention that it says "FORST time watching". (I'm in the UK, by the way, so it's not isolated to the USA.)

Clarence Newman

On Patreon or YouTube?

Mike Lemon

Did Cassie just point at Joan Shawlee and say "Is that Marilyn Monroe?" Oh, my heart. Medic! My legs have gone. Cut me, Mick.

Clarence Newman

Jim i checked for you and I'm able to watch. I would try again.

David Freese

One day we'll get her to watch some silents. Not many, but a few of the little gems.

Clarence Newman

Since I’ve begun watching reaction channels and realizing people think that any movie older than before they were born (or more than 20 years) is considered ancient history, I can’t assume anything! It’s fun to witness the discovery but also frustrating (as I’ve always routinely watched movies much older than myself!).

Marja

Always good policy, Marja, but I don't think this one would be much of a spoiler. The studio put a 52 foot high portrait from that scene on the side of a Times Square building before the film came out. Everybody who's ever watched it has seen that picture. The perfect choice if Cassie wants to try another Monroe film, though. That and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are the two that probably showcase her star power the best.

Clarence Newman

I was just about to hit send on a post saying WHAT he did in Spartacus. Then I realised it would've been a pretty big spoiler. He was in Spartacus anyway!

Clarence Newman

Hi Cassie… I am unable to watch the video for this movie because it is being restricted… I’m in the USA. Am I the only one having this issue?

Jim Staab

I knew some of his older movies, but was surprised how many movies he was in ! I believe he also had a recurring role on the TV Show Vegas.

Tim C

I suspect Billy Wilder’s choice to film this in b&w as a nod to the timeframe. Just a few years earlier he filmed The Seven Year Itch in color. It starred Tom Ewell and Marilyn Monroe. Primarily a stage play film with one notable exception (no spoilers!).

Marja

Tony Curtis was also the title role in The Boston Strangler and is Jamie Lee Curtis's father.

Stranger2Reality

Tony Curtis was also good in Defiant Ones ,Boeing, Boeing with Jerry Lewis . And another must watch Tony Curtis , Jack Lemmon and the Beautifull Natalie Wood in The Great Race.

Tim C

What are spats? Men would wear spats to keep their boots clean and as a status symbol. Men who wore spats were often considered well-off and sometimes known as dandies. Spats also became famous because of who wore them; real-life gangsters and movie stars portraying gangsters were seen wearing spats.

Jeffrey Joll

Junior (Tony Curtis) 's accent when she/he pretends to be a millionaire is based on the classic actor Cary Grant.

Jeffrey Joll

It does my heart so much good to watch you watch this classic film. Still holds up better than many more recent comedies

jdj830

Calliente! 1:29 I had no choice but to "like" this video, as I famously am a classic lover. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

The big hotel they stay at still exists! It’s in Coronado, very near San Diego. And it’s amazing - or was when my wife and I stayed there about 10-15 years ago.

JayPeaBee

I thought this film was OK but of course MM was worth the price of admission alone

Ross Cicero

Hope you enjoyed it. Did you recognize Jack Lemmon?
