Grumpier Old Men (1995) - Full Reaction

Walter Mathieu, Robin Williams and Jerry Reed (from Smokey and the Bandit) in “The Survivors”. Panned by critics it is full of hilarious one liners. Fun movie and Carly safe.

Dang It... everyone is already recommending The Odd Couple.. So ill throw my hat in that ring... I think its their best work together. Based on a play by Neil Simon and later a TV show in the 70s and then a short lived TV show with Matthew Perry a few years back. Please oh Please watch in on this channel... : D

El CID - with Charlton Heston & Sophia Loren - is considered one of the last great epics during Hollywood’s Golden Age. (I did send a copy of the DVD). My dad saw this film when it was first released in 1961. He remembered the huge movie poster of “El CID” in the theater entrance with the tagline: “The Greatest Romance and Adventure in a Thousand Years!” My dad also remembers the audible gasp from the audience when they first saw Sophia Loren on screen. Like most men to have set eyes on her, my dad had a huge crush on Sophia Loren - the living legend who began her film career in 1950 at the age of 16. We share the same bday on 09/20. She is a film and beauty icon. Cassie & Carly - hope you guys checkout more of her work! She is formidable in her Oscar-winning performance for Best Actress in the Italian film “Two Women” - where she made history in 1961 as the first actor to win an Oscar for a foreign-language role.

Rose

These two legendary duos did ten movies together, the final being 'The Odd Couple II', wish they would've done more together.

JPDotCom23

Yes, but The Odd Couple was their classic.

crazyivan

“He lived a good life I think…went out swingin’”🥰

Cole Jennett

Sophie Loren the movie that comes to mind is Houseboat with Cary Grant. She is a Beautiful woman.

Tim C

Spookily enough, The Odd Couple is on my wish list for Cassie to watch - despite the fact that I've never seen it myself. When a reputation precedes a film in that way, it's probably a good idea to recommend it to Cassie.

Clarence Newman

I saw this clip a week ago, thought it a worthy share… Kevin Pollak on Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon when working on Grumpy Old Men. https://youtu.be/AGIr_G5oK4w?si=mG1fdSyA1oe2VFka Also, a very interesting bit about Walter Matthau and Fred Astaire.

Larry Darrell

This was a fun reaction. It's definitely a worthy sequel, nearly as good as the original. I really appreciate that they brought everyone back and spiced up things by casting the amazing Sophia Loren. Who by the way just recently celebrated her 90th birthday on September 20. I'm joining in recommending THE ODD COUPLE (1968). It was one of their earlier roles together, and if you would like to see them both young, it should be on your movie bucket list.

Gábor Árki

These movies are just great simple movies that are fun with wonderful actors. I could watch them many more times and never be done with them 🥰

Nicole

Exactly

V M

Jack Lemmon once said in an interview that he and Matthau had never actually had one argument in all the years they had known each other.

Darren Harrison

I love the fact they are buried pretty much next to each other in real life! I’ve visited a few times! Love these two actors!

Philip Alan

The only black & white film Lemmon and Matthau did was, The Fortune Cookie (1966), from the same creative team as Some Like it Hot and The Apartment, writer and director Billy Wilder and writer I.A.L. Diamond. I prefer The Fortune Cookie over the other two, personally. The 4 of them, Lemmon, Matthau, Wilder and Diamond, made 2 other films… The Front Page (1974) and Buddy Buddy (1981).

Larry Darrell

If the clip was in black and white, it was The Fortune Cookie. If it was in color, it was The Odd Couple.

Mike LL

PIB has quite the collection of Deutch family work on it at this point, and we are about to see Lea Thompson again soon in "Howard the Duck". When I saw Howard Duetch directly this I was interested if someone was going to mention them.

Mojo One Thousand

They did a lot together. The Fortune Cookie was their first one.

bgb1975

I never realized it, but there are certain scenes from the Grumpy Old Men movies that are strangely deja vu of Jack Lemmon in The Great Race: "Max! You idiot!"

bgb1975

I did watch a clip on YouTube of Water and Jack starring together in an older movie from the 60s when I found out they were best friends for million plus years, which I didn't know, and man it was pretty darn funny! Can't remember what the movie name was, but I hope you eventually check it out. It's amazing how much Sofia Loren and Joan Collins look like each other, and they're almost the same age! I honestly thought that was Joan before she started talking. I saw parts of Grumpier on HBO free preview weekends in the late nineties as a kid, never watched it before, but the plot seems simple enough that watching it for the first time with your reaction shouldn't be too complicated. Current events and these movies are almost making me want to move to Mankato Minnesota where my grandparents were from prior to WWII.

Maria: I havent been with a man for a long time... Max: Mmm, me neither...

This is the kind of movie I think of when I think “Tender.” This was the most perfect film for Tender November… so far. The most “tear worthy” scenes came from the great Burgess Meredith. He was the most vulgar, and yet the most heartwarming. When he sang “Dream a Little Dream,” the eyes watered. Such a terrific actor. Grumpier Old Men was his last feature film before his death, 2 years later. If you’re interested in seeing his talent through the years (sans Mickey), I recommend… Of Mice and Men (1939) Tom, Dick and Harry (1941) Story of G.I. Joe (1945) Advise & Consent (1962) In Harm’s Way (1965) Foul Play (1978) Sophia Loren… what is there to say. Once you’ve seen her, you’ll never forget her. That’s how it was with me. Boy did I have a crush after seeing this film as a kid. Sure there was a 50 year age difference, but I was Ok with it. I only hoped she would be ;-) Years later, digging into film history, I found out there was so much more Talent that came with her incredible Beauty. For more, I recommend… Too Bad She’s Bad (1954) Houseboat (1958) Two Women (1960)… Oscar winning role Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) Marriage Italian Style (1964) More Than a Miracle (1967) Man of La Mancha (1972) Of course, I can’t forget about the alluring and radiating Ann-Margret. In the 1960s, she was The “It” Girl. Until you’ve seen some of her earlier films, you aren’t going to fully understand the magnetism that Ann-Margret exudes. I recommend… State Fair (1962) Bye Bye Birdie (1963) Viva Las Vegas (1964) The Pleasure Seekers (1964) Bus Riley’s Back in Town (1965) Made in Paris (1966) The Swinger (1966) and for the more experienced film connoisseur :-)… Tommy (1975)… Your senses will never be the same ;-) Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are two of the greatest actors of their era. Not just comedic actors. To see more of their amazing range, I recommend for Walter Matthau… A Face in the Crowd (1957) Strangers When We Meet (1960) Lonely Are the Brave (1962) A Guide for the Married Man (1967) Cactus Flower (1969) The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) The Sunshine Boys (1975) The Bad News Bears (1976) for Jack Lemmon… Mister Roberts (1955) Cowboy (1958) The Great Race (1965) The April Fools (1969) Avanti! (1972) Save the Tiger (1973) The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975) The China Syndrome (1979) Missing (1982) Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) My Fellow Americans (1996) 12 Angry Men (1997) and for the Lemmon and Matthau team… The Fortune Cookie (1966) The Odd Couple (1968) Out to Sea (1997) and for a surprisingly “Tender” film, directed by Jack Lemmon and starring Walter Matthau… Kotch (1971) and Lastly… the director of Grumpier Old Men, Howard Deutch (husband to Lea Thompson and father to Zoey Deutch). The man does know how to make a “Tender” film. You’ve already seen Pretty in Pink (1986) and The Replacements (2000). Now try… Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)… with Lea Thompson (they met here ;-) & The Great Outdoors (1988)… with John Candy and Dan Aykroyd. Both of these films written by John Hughes. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen John Hughes on the channel… and we know what kind of “Tender” moments that Hughes has given us… The Breakfast Club (1985) Pretty in Pink (1986) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) Home Alone (1990) Beethoven (1992) Dennis the Menace (1993) Vacation (1983) was “Tender” right? You can’t get more tender than Clark Griswald… unless you’re George Bailey. ;-)

Larry Darrell

I remember reading this story years ago: When they were shooting "Buddy, Buddy", Walter suffered a serious accident when he fell doing a physical comedy scene. As he lay on the floor moaning, Jack ran over and folded up his coat and gently lifted Walter’s head and placed it underneath. Jack then asked, ‘Are you comfortable?’ Walter looked up at him and said, ‘I make a living.’

V M

I don't hate that movie (and I actually think the cast and performances are good), but it is definitely inferior to the original Sidney Lumet film. An unnecessary remake because it was done right the first time.

Stick Figure Studios

I notice no one lists the 1997 12 angry men remake as a Jack Lemmon movie to watch, and justifiably so. His acting was of far less quality than Henry Fonda's. Terrible acting by the whole cast, including George C. Scott. Yikers.

V M

Definitely THE ODD COUPLE... and OUT TO SEA was much better than it had any right to be.

Stick Figure Studios

Well, you've done a fine job of that already. You don't need my help. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

I've be an looking forward this one. I knew this one would would hit home with you both. Lots of laughs but tender and touching . Thanks ladies.

Canadianant

I saw… I should’ve waited before typing the comment

Tara

She's a busy girl, Stick, lots going in her head. Reminders are a required tool of our trade.

Clarence Newman

You can see Jack and Walter when they were younger in The Odd Couple and they teamed up again after this movie in Out to Sea. They are magic together

Tara

Yeah, I mentioned that one in the SOME LIKE IT HOT thread.

Stick Figure Studios

And for Lemmon, there's also The Great Race (1965).

Clarence Newman

Never saw that one.

Stick Figure Studios

For Matthau there is also I'm Not Rappaport (1996).

Mike Lemon

She's saving the best for last. ;-)

Stick Figure Studios

Love THE SUNSHINE BOYS. He and George Burns are both great.

Stick Figure Studios

She actually mentions that on the intro.

Stick Figure Studios

I second THE ODD COUPLE.

Stick Figure Studios

So glad you guys liked this. I figured you would. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were a fantastic comedy team (and good friends in real life). As you observed, they have a tremendous rapport and chemistry. They starred in 10 movies together. For my money, their best one is THE ODD COUPLE. You should check it out. Also, if you're interested in movies that star them solo, for Matthau I recommend CHARADE (also with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant), HOPSCOTCH and THE TAKING OFF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (the original, not the remake). For Lemmon, I recommend CHINA SYNDROME, GLENGARY GLEN ROSS and THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. As always keep up the good work. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

It goes without saying that Sophia Loren was an unfeasibly gorgeous woman, but I read a story once that also makes me respect her immensely. It's no secret that John F Kennedy had a fondness for the ladies, and his Secret Service team were often tasked to set him up with beautiful women. Sophia Loren was at a party at the White House one evening and JFK took a shine to her. He called one of his guys over, told him he was going out on the terrace and to inform Miss Loren that he wanted her to join him. The Secret Service guy went up to Sophia and, apparently, this is how the conversation went: SS guy: Miss Loren. The President is out on the terrace and has requested the pleasure of your company. Sophia (reading between the lines): Please thank him for the offer. But no thank you. SS guy (a little confused): Ummmm....I don't think you understand, Miss. The "President" is waiting for you out on the terrace. Sophia (looking the guy straight in the eye): I do understand....and no....thank you. She then turned and walked away. Pure. Class. As for Ann-Margret, only one co-star ever managed to match Elvis in every department, and she was it.

Clarence Newman

Actually Superman 2 was the runner up Grumpier old men was 3rd

David Freese

Jack Lemmon was everyone's favorite, a funny comedian and gifted actor. Walther Matthau was one of Hollywood's greatest character actors. Ann Margaret was an all around talent, singer, dancer, actress and gorgeous. Sophia Loren was a World Class beauty and gifted actress. There is a mountain, a continent of talent in this movie. Vote me up a dose of young Lemmon and Matthau in their prime in one of their greatest comedies, THE ODD COUPLE (1968).

Mike LL

Cassie, you do know that John was Jerry/Daphne from Some Like It Hot. The one and only Jack Lemmon Edit: I obviously typed the comment above before watching the intro… and we also get Mickey. I just recently rewatched your first couple Rocky reactions

Tara

Not on the channel....yet! I've DM'd a couple of Ann-Margaret dance videos to Cassie on ig. :)

Celeste McAllister

Sophia Loren is a beautiful older woman in this movie, but she was called the most stunning woman in the world when she was younger.

Tara

Literally the runner up in the Sequels Poll 😁

Dan M

Sophia Loren is certainly easy on the eyes. And 100% yes to Viva Las Vegas on a poll…or as a Popcorn Pick of the Month. Am I wrong or has Cassie not watched an Elvis movie on the channel yet?

Dan M

Im not old, but I’m certainly grumpier from working out in the yard today. But that will all change once I settle down to watch this later tonight. It’ll be my first time watching this movie, but I loved the first one. Just watched your reaction to Some Like It Hot a couple of nights ago. So in one week I’ll get to see young Jack Lemmon and older Jack Lemmon.. awesome!

Dan M

Perfectly Tender this one.

Larry Darrell

Walter Matthau was great in everything. "The Sunshine Boys" is probably my favorite with him, but I love these "grumpy" movies too.

clutchkman

Yes to Viva Las Vegas and double-yes to Ann-Margaret, hubba hubba!

clutchkman

Again C&C and the tenderness they bring us!🌹...Sophia Loren,I love a classically gorgeous lady like fine wine and Ann-Margaret,she and Elvis were believed to be an item, the King was to much of a player for her...place 'Viva Las Vegas' on a poll! :)

Celeste McAllister

When Jack & Walter do movies together, it's magical. 😄

Zane From Canada

It’s gonna hurt not getting to watch this one for another couple of days. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while so will have to avoid comments until afterwards to not spoil the reaction.

Cole Jennett

Darn thought I was getting some Superman today but this a good runner up

David Freese

Walter Matthau is a gift straight from heaven. 😇

GomezAddams

Way to go Cassie. I needed some happiness today.

Uncle Phoenix

A worthy sequel!
