Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "Coming to America" which will premiere in a few hours on YT. Enjoy!

[YT Edit] Coming to America (1988)

Comments

Good one. Autocorrect is my friend 😂

Mary Alice

I *love* Arsenio and Old Lace! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

This was posted the eve of King Charles III's birthday. Just sayin'.

Happy Hanukkah

Arsenic and Eddie play multiple characters in this movie, mostly in barbershop.

Mary Alice

Good movie, good review. One of my favorites of all time. I always thought the first part was the best, but totally forgot about the love story in their. This is Eddie's 2nd best movie. You really want to get out of your comfort zone check out '48 Hours', probably Eddie's best work, and first major film. 👍👍👍

Jay505

Pretty much all I know about Hugh Jackman and this movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytcp2qjhnyI&t=16s

Happy Hanukkah

They have not, but.....you know.....Hugh Jackman.

Clarence Newman

And we will continue to do so for a long time to come, Mark. Unless, of course, Cassie doesn't watch Officer and a Gentleman in November, in which case I'm throwing my toys out.

Clarence Newman

Have they watch Australia (2008) with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman?

ArturoH

Agree Clarence, for me Cassie’s genuine nature is one of the reasons I find Cassie so much more engaging than other reactors. Also, intelligent thoughtful comments, empathetic feelings, infectious laugh, Carly is great too and a really well run reaction channel, which gives all the movie genres a good go. Above all I just love coming on here and talking movies with you guys, it’s makes life stresses melt away, if not just for a while. 🙂

Mark White

I think for me Clay, coming to America is a good enough comedy to watch but I’m probably coming at it from a nostalgic point of view. So if I was to watch it first time now, like Cassie, then maybe some of the early parts of the movie would seam a-bit dated. I would say Cassie overall enjoyed most of it. But it probably won’t go down as a favourite or one to rewatch for her.

Mark White

I remember Young Einstein - a springboard to oblivion for Yahoo Serious!

Clarence Newman

One of you is surely jesting. The other has forgotten that Creed is, strictly speaking, a sequel to Rocky Balboa, therefore only 9 years later, and therefore disqualified. You may have me with Top Gun: Maverick.

Clarence Newman

The irony being that some of the critics and moviegoers were disappointed by this movie specifically because Eddie Murphy (as the main character) was much tamer than his wont.

Happy Hanukkah

I think your opinion is more valid than mine on this one, Clay. My Nick Nolte prejudice kind of gets in the way. Important to note: he redeemed himself big time with his performance in Warrior. First time I've ever been able to engage with one of his characters. If I watch Cape Fear, though, I'll still be rooting for DeNiro.

Clarence Newman

She clearly does carry pre-conceived ideas about certain actors. That's why we have trouble getting more Jack Nicholson on the channel. I think she was pleasantly surprised by Eddie in this movie.

Clarence Newman

That makes sense.

Clay F

[And now for my standard joke.] Surely no "Australia Week" would be complete without Fair Game (1986). Cassie is sure to love it! :-P

Happy Hanukkah

I have no objection to 48 Hours, I just think Beverly Hills Cop would be a better fit. And surely we want to honor John Ashton's memory! :-) By the way (not that this is determinative in any way): Beverly Hills Cop: $316,300,000 48 Hrs.: $75,936,265

Happy Hanukkah

Cassie's relative likes aren't that surprising given that the second half is a standard rom-com while the first half simply functions as a setup for this while engaging in comedy which is necessarily going to be a matter of taste. I'm not sure I agree with your interpretation re EM's obnoxiousness, as I understood that as two separate thoughts. In the intro, she mentioned she saw him as an obnoxious character (based on Shrek etc). I saw the outro comment as a re-visiting of this, as in: "I didn't like the first part (for reasons unrelated to EM), but I was able to like the second rom-com part since it turns out that EM can be non-obnoxious, as opposed to my fears coming in." IMHO.

Happy Hanukkah

I feel like if someone hasn't already seen 48 Hrs and watched it for the first time today, they would be utterly shocked and taken aback by the blatant racism in it. I can see that being very difficult for younger audiences to get past, especially with regards to the Nick Nolte character. I saw that back in the 80s when people didn't think about that stuff in the same way, so it's one of many movies which are like culturally "grandfathered in" for me, but I don't think it would be the same for Cassie or Carly.

Stranger2Reality

Agree that Eddie Murphy would refine his acting over his career but 48 Hours (1982) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984) are both early in his career. Further, which movie that Cassie would like the best of 48 Hours or Beverly Hills Cop is not a top consideration for me. Also, any crudeness in 48 Hours is not only fine but a good fit. Nick Nolte is awesome in 48 Hours. The chemistry between Nolte and Eddie Murphy is great. Plus, I just like the story better in 48 Hours. Lastly, my subjective opinion is driven by nostalgia -- 48 Hours was my first Eddie Murphy movie -- I was age 19 in 1982 when the movie was released. Metacritic 71%, IMDb 6.9, RT 92% -- 48 Hours Metacritic 66%, IMDb 7.4, RT 82% -- Beverly Hills Cop

Clay F

Cassie in outro: “The first half was hard for me … And then I liked the second half … he was ... not obnoxious.” Based on the outro alone, sounds like she may have found the Eddie Murphy main character as obnoxious the first half of the movie. You seem to understand the first half being hard for her but the first half is not hard for you. I think she has said that Pulp Fiction is her least favorite movie on the channel, and I love Pulp Fiction. I generally agree with her sentiment on movies. For instance, while I have nostalgia for Highlander, one can't deny how dated and cheesy that movie can be. I even find it hard to watch now. I will say that it seemed like she made the decision early in the Highlander movie that she didn't like the movie. Movie watching is subjective and we all have our personally valid opinions. Good point about being genuine. That's what we want. I am not a fan of Coming to America and was sad that it won the poll but glad for those patrons who like Coming to America.

Tron Legacy Mary Poppins Returns Fantasia 2000 Return to Oz

Mike Lemon

...add Young Einstein and that week will be great 😄

Björn Karlsson

I get the feeling she wouldn't like that one, Clay. It's pretty crude, my opinion of Nolte is the exact opposite of yours (sorry, I've just never liked him), and Eddie hadn't quite refined his performance yet. "48 Hours" is to "Beverly Hills Cop" what "With The Beatles" was to "A Hard Day's Night". The first one was good, but the next one was bloody brilliant!

Clarence Newman

I watched the YT edit this morning, Clay, and as far as I could tell, Cassie enjoyed the early part of it (Zamunda) just fine. The middle part might've fallen flat on her (based on her facial expressions, which is kind of all we have to go on), but then she perked up and seemed to enjoy the ending. If the first half was "hard" for her (and her smiling and laughter was nervous or awkward instead of easy and genuine), then I can only assume it was more due to the overt sexism than any negative portrayal of Africans. Outside of the blatant patriarchy, I can't think of anything that paints African people in a bad light, but a 21st century woman might have a problem with the rose petal girls and the royal bathers, not to mention the beautiful young lady who was made to hop on one foot while barking like a dog. (Personally, I think those scenes are funny, because I fully trust that Eddie meant no disrespect to women. It was the outlandish traditions he was poking fun at.) Overall, this is a feel good film which pokes gentle fun at patriarchy and the excesses of royalty, and for the most part I think she got that. (Carly sure did.) I do think the movie may have lost her for a while during the barber shop scenes. I've seen them many times so I know what they're saying, but for a first-timer, it was probably hard to keep up with the dialogue - especially when she doesn't know any of the boxers they were so animatedly discussing. I enjoyed the reaction, even though Carly's engagement was probably more consistent. This happens with Cassie sometimes and we can't expect otherwise. For every Bill & Ted, Smokey & The Bandit or Crocodile Dundee that somehow hits her just right, there are going to be a similar number that don't quite pull her in. It's the same for us with the films she chooses to watch (and we complain a lot louder than she ever does), so she's not alone. Genuine is all I ever want from her, and as always, that's what we got here. For those who were disappointed because she didn't fall off the bed laughing, there's always the next one.

Clarence Newman

Fellow patrons, did you agree with Cassie's positive comments (e.g., "some great moments, and I love the trope of outsider learning" and "overall a great tender November flick"). And/or with her less than positive comments: "I do think parts of it were dated and it didn't quite totally land for me." "The first half was hard for me." (implied "obnoxious")

Clay F

Why not start with the first? 48 Hours. Nick Nolte is good.

Clay F

Bottom line when it comes to Shatner: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZtyjY6VjF9Q Yes, I most definitely am. Regarding his Common People (with significant contributions by Ben Folds and Joe Jackson), I (un-ironically) think that it is an excellent version of the song. Shatner's fearless over-the-top delivery brings out aspects of it that few "real" singers could have.

Happy Hanukkah

You may be joking (and I may have terrible taste in music), but I love Shatner's "Transformed Man" LP. The first comment on that video link says it all: "You have to love Shatner - not being able to sing has never interfered with his musical career"

Clarence Newman

And this one goes out from Lisa McDowell to "Prince" Akeem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ainyK6fXku0 (Full credit to Jarvis Cocker et al.)

Happy Hanukkah

True enough. And for Cassie to ignore such logic would be an insult to Spock.

Clarence Newman

Possible exceptions (YMMV): Creed Top Gun: Maverick Blade Runner 2049

Happy Hanukkah

Exactly!

5:23 "I tied my own shoes once..." I love JEJ's delivery here, as if he had been promised a thrilling experience and felt cheated. And then there's the unexpected cheerful lecherousness at 9:47. 27:47 Wait for it... wait for it... wait for it... :-) 34:34 You're not supposed to know him in this movie, but this is Eriq La Salle, best known for ER. (You've also seen him recently in Logan.) (And speaking of ER, Vondie Curtis-Hall, the vendor at the basketball game, was the "Black doctor" in Chicago Hope.) 40:55 Yes! I love that chinese fruit! I am highly disappointed in Carly; how lazy one must be to recycle one own's lines, at 14:14 and 31:28! :-P :-) After watching Trading Places and Coming to America, I'd say the logical eventual next step would be Beverly Hills Cop (1984), a comedic cop movie starring Eddie Murphy (in more "obnoxious" mode :-) .)

Happy Hanukkah

In my opinion, Jose, there's only ever been one sequel that's ever been any good when made more than 20 years after the original - and that's The Color of Money.

Clarence Newman

That's a side-effect of her success, Hanukkah. Cassie has received so many gifts, DVDs and such over the past three years, she now employs a warehouse staff of 28 people to keep track of them all. I've checked the database and your version of the Coming To America DVD is in a storage box on the top shelf of rack 7, row 62 in Warehouse 11. When she went looking for it and was told it was "Up there, Miss!", she muttered the word "frick" under her breath and left without it. At least she tried.

Clarence Newman

Darn, if only someone had sent her a DVD of the film! :-P :-P :-P

Happy Hanukkah

Cassie mentioned that in the comments for the full reaction. On the streamed version she was watching, the credits actually cut off at that point, she didn't stop them herself. I think she and Carly would've been happy to see which characters Eddie and Arsenio played.

Clarence Newman

Did they actually sit through the credits to see all the characters that Eddie and Arsenio played? That would have been a great reveal for them if they did, but at least this version just ended abruptly when the credits started.

Stranger2Reality

I remember our teacher in grade school telling us to stop quoting Coming to America. This love story is a bit ridiculous. I had a woman tell me she would love me for who I am this weekend, and I couldn't get away from her fast enough. She's tender and feminine and sweet. So what's the problem, right? The problem is the falseness of it. Your partner is a crucible that helps to forge you into a stronger piece of steel. I don't need tender loving care to weaken me; to soften my resolve. A man needs to be useful, purified by the fires of the universe, not turned into a lap dog for lesser accomplishments. Anyway, I trust my instincts, the "devouring mother" personality archetype leads to temporary happiness and long-term complacency. That said, I need to understand what makes a great romantic movie. What should we look for in them? Asking the experts.

Author Travis Adams Irish

Isn't it nice to see Carly sitting next to Cassie at the beginning of a reaction without looking like she's about to walk the Green Mile. October nearly did for the poor girl.

Clarence Newman

Romper Stomper AND Crocodile Dundee 2 on a double bill? I approve.

Clarence Newman

Great!! Romper stomper will be perfect 🙂

Next Australia day is Sunday January 26 2025

ArturoH

I say this in jest... I am offended about your coment on Mike Dundee and demand you to see Crocodile Dundee II (1988) PS: Kudos on the "how dear he, he was Mufasa" and the door slapping pdediction.

ArturoH

Love seeing James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair ( Mufasa and Sarabi) True Acting Royalty 🦁👑♥️

Ocelot

Oh, man. Cassie mentioned "My Date with the President's Daughter." I totally forgot about that movie. That's a good one too!

Stephen Dias

LMAO.. I see you skipped over the beginning of the movie for obvious reasons.. I dont think youtube would be too keen on the bathtub.. although it would have been hilarious to see your reaction like you had in your follow along video on Patreon.

Johnny Bullis

Good choice. Looking forward to this reaction. 🖖

Mark McKeever

This movie is tender if you disregard the sequel haha

Jose Deleon

All the different characters that Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall play makes this movie so entertaining.
