Where's the inconsistency? Didn't we already go over how he doesn't actually murder anyone? When did he say he put anyone in a trap because of a smoking habit?
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

He's an egomanical murderer who is written completely inconsistent and thinks he should kill people because they smoke too much.
I never thought I would find someone who actually believes in all of his bs in the wild.

And how would this animal rescue teach people about struggle and sacrifice? About not squandering their lives but instead how to appreciate them?

"Need I remind you only a Sith deals in absolutes?"
No, because that is a nonsense line and it annoys me ever time I see it.
"Also you seem to think John can ONLY ever be and do good or ONLY be and do evil."
Nope. He could have owned a puppy rescue, but that doesn't overrule the multiple murders, attempted murders, kidnappings, and torture.

Yeah that's one thing I really didn't like about this first installment is when he lied to Amanda about her former cellmate being dead.
As to your overall point of someone needing to die, there are a number of traps throughout the series that pit two or more people against each other, sometimes at the judgment of someone else. This goes to the sacrifice thing, sacrificing one life to save an another life/lives.
The kidnapping and mental duress? Yes, life can be and is as traumatic as the traps themselves. You either endure this trauma and are stronger for it or find you cannot move past it and suffer.
Also you seem to think John can ONLY ever be and do good or ONLY be and do evil. Need I remind you only a Sith deals in absolutes? Life is not nearly so black and white, often times a miasma of greys. Do his subjects or the surrounding affected deserve death or whatever traumatic event they happened to go through? Probably not. Do his subjects deserve to have their survival instincts tested? I struggle to think of a case where I would say no. To summarize, thankfully this is all only a work of fiction so I can appreciate and be entertained by the drama of the storylines and characters guilt-free. Still my second favorite horror franchise ever after Phantasm.

How did the key holder kill himself? John used Amamda to murder him. At least one of those two had to die, there was no option.
John attempted to kill the drill guy. There was no way to escape that without outside help.
What was the test for Dr. Gordon? Kill Adam or his family gets murdered.
What was Zep's test? Murder the wife and kid or die.
And he straight up murdered Adam.
That alone is three murders (key holder, Zep, Adam) and at least five attempted murders.
That doesn't even touch on the kidnapping and torture (the wife and kid were innocents).
John is evil, no matter the point-of-view.

As Lawrence said "Technically, he never murdered anybody. He finds ways for his victims to kill themselves." It's why his last words of most tapes or videos are "Live or die...make your choice." Like Amanda and Lawrence, the people in the traps have the potential to survive should they find the will to persevere.

He's a cold blooded murderer, he's evil. Whether you use a gun or a ball-pein hammer or force another person to murder someone, you are still murdering someone.

34:02 Except John, or Jigsaw as he will come to be known, is not evil. From his perspective, which is the one I align to the most throughout the franchise, he's not even a bad guy. He's a teacher who has made it his mission to help others learn the true meaning of struggle and sacrifice. Only with these tools can one's spirit truly gain freedom and self-enlightenment.

It definitely has a gritty, low budget vibe to it. Some of the acting is pretty bad. But I think that works in it's favor for this type of story. At the time this was a landmark release in horror. All in all, I'm glad she watched it.

Cassie has 3500+ paying patrons, none of us (Cassie included) know what % of patrons actively support horror films on the channel. Cassie could eliminate all horror from her channel and I'm fine with that. If she decides to continue with horror reactions, I (and a few other patrons) have suggested she spread out horror reactions throughout the year like all other genres. This should greatly diminish her stress and anxiety in dealing with the horror genre. Be interesting to see what she decides to do.

Good, bad, or middling is always subjective for each of us. The film is what the creators wanted it to be, and it was a box-office success so it found a reasonable audience. Cassie's husband recommended she react to SAW, it's been on her radar for a few years. As for voting in the polls, most patrons just vote for what they want to see (I do anyway). Cassie will always prefer more recent films, and many classic horror films are on her never-to-be watched list.

lol yeah, Saw is not a good movie, but it's very watchable, and I'll give them credit for basically inventing an entire subgenre.
And, yes OF COURSE this movie is only popular because of the twist. "The Usual Suspects" won best screenplay Oscar, even though it's a boring and convoluted Tarantino ripoff UNTIL the very end. People enjoy a twist.
Also agree, gore & violence (and jump scares) are not "horror" , a real horror movie can/should MESS YOU UP.. for DAYS.
Off the top of my (drunk) head, I still think about movies like: Babadook, It Follows, Midsommar, Green Room, Men, Creep, Barbarian, The Menu. (guess I have an A24 fetish)
Related, for anyone, if "The Substance" is still playing in theaters near you, GO. I trauma-bonded with complete strangers.

I agree with you, Alex, but I feel a strange duty to sit with Cassie in cyberspace while she's watching stuff like this. Whether we want her to do it or not, she is risking a sliver of her soul to do so, and if she's doing it, then so should we. For those who don't want to watch the actual reaction, what I'd request is that you click on the YT video and start it playing so at least she gets the view numbers. I'm not saying she needs them (as per a recent post up in the FAQ section, WatchMojo rates PiB as easily the number one movie reactor channel), but it's a good way of rewarding her for being brave.

I'm sorry, but even as a horror fan this is just not a good movie. I think it won a lot of people over with a twist they didn't see coming, but the killer being someone we really hadn't seen up till that point is stupid, almost like an inverse deus ex machina. Without them suddenly saying "this person who hasn't been part of the story before now is behind it all", I really think people would have very quickly forgotten this movie.
Fortunately James Wan and Leigh Whannell went on to make lots of other stuff which was actually good, but this is very much lesser work from both of them. It's fine as a super low budget first feature and showed they were talented, but this really should have just been a 30 minute short, like an episode of the Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. Stretching it out to feature length just wound up padding it with an hour's worth of nonsense. It's just the twist ending, right? That's why people like this, yeah?
Hopefully next year the people picking the polls for Halloween movies will do a better job. There are actually good horror movies out there that won't be traumatic just for the sake of being gory or shocking. This is not how you win someone over to the genre.

The "Saw films" are now part of the Cinema Universe known as "Torture Porn" some people love this stuff while I am not one of them. I just fast forwarded to your final thoughts and then went back and rewatched your viewing of "Arsenic and Old Lace" to keep in my memory of Cassie's October videos this season. Happy Halloween and on to the rest of the year.

She did better than I expected with the foot sequence. So, yeah, the second film has a brilliant plot and is worth seeing. The rest are...repetitive. I guess your tolerance is right up there with mine now, so well done. Horror movies help us to prepare for the real evil in the world. Although when you see real evil, it's difficult to process. I saw a guy beating his small children in the parking lot of an Apollo Burgers, and I was so shocked that my brain froze for a few seconds. Fortunately, there were cops eating there, and I went and got them. Otherwise, I would have just rammed him into the car with my shoulder. But when someone is doing something so appalling, and you can't comprehend it, your mind goes numb. At this point, you should be able to handle pretty much anything. Another scary moment for me was a guy who tried to shove a lit cigarette in my eye, and I had to overpower him. It got too close. Nutcase!

To answer your question, Cassie, what happens in the the rest of the the series is a lot more of the same with doubling back with new characters related to old characters related to new characters with plenty of red herrings along the way and ever more elaborate and gruesome scenarios. I for one don’t have the memory or suspension of disbelief to enjoy it fully but I would like to binge them all again but also am happy that I don’t have the time to do that.

As someone who also dislikes horror as a genre, I came here to ask our Ms. PiB, "Who are you, and what have you done with our innocent little Cassie?!?"
But then I read your post, and mine felt silly in comparison. I certainly agree with your main point: it bothers me that some people appear to take great joy in watching sensitive souls like Cassie be subjected to disturbing material. I just don't get it... Sigh. 😔

I know no one will care and get annoyed but I have to say something. Cassie watching Saw has literally been my worst nightmare about this channel since I first joined and now it has come to pass. I realize Cassie is a grownup who has made the choice to watch this movie but I also know that to a certain extent her decisions are dictated by numbers, and that she is watching this because a lot of you wanted to watch her watch this. It's profoundly unsettling to me that you see someone who obviously has a tremendous amount of empathy and sensitivity and you wanted to push that to the limit by requesting that she watch graphic torture that exists only to disturb. I have been watching her reactions less and less lately because I get no pleasure from watching her being traumatized - I'd rather share in the infectious joy she exudes when she watches something she likes, or the humanity she displays when she's moved by disturbing material that isn't gratuitous but shows an important aspect of history or real human behavior. I know that horror is a genre that has existed as long as there has been culture and you don't have to be a psychopath to like it - but a lot of us don't. I don't like the person I become when I watch a horror film. I don't want to root for the bad guy to get dismembered even if he is the bad guy. I don't think that's good for me - and I have been through some truly horrific experiences in real life. In any case I will not be watching this. Sorry.
