[YT Edit] Haunting of Hill House (EP 3-10)

Comments

Maybe, if they see this, they can throw it up on Rumble ahead of schedule? https://rumble.com/c/PopcornInBedOfficial

Mike Lemon

Looks like YouTube delisted the video 😔

Jeff

Midnight Mass would make for a wild reaction from Cassie. Not just October fare, Cassie can watch it any month.

Joe

First Contact was an awesome movie. If she liked trouble with tribbles she should watch the ds9 episode trials and tribulations

inspectordh

She'll definitely like Bly Manor because you know... it's perfectly splendid. The two are hauntings. Midnight Mass is altogether different and maybe more Flanagan's background? I don't really research so much what's behind the art versus consuming the art itself. A lot of what goes on inside the mass is not unknown to me... I suppose the majority knows what it's like going to mass... but I can understand the response should vary between people. For example there are much fewer reactions to Midnight Mass vs Hill House. But I'll go ahead and give Midnight Mass a few more shakes. Also I'm not sure I'm aligned with how people perceive Hill House. It seems like they're describing it as full of jump scares like The Conjuring or as disturbing as The Exorcist. Hill House seems unique in its depiction of death to the point of being intimate with a few corpses. But it's also largely about carrying childhood trauma into adulthood. They do describe a couple of concepts about the afterlife which are pretty cool. In Midnight Mass it seems to be about belief in going to church. It seems to be about a community going to mass. I'm not sure it comments about the afterlife. It's about a community seeking... something. Does it skewer some tropes or people's beliefs? I'm not sure.

Mannygogou

I second MIDNIGHT MASS. I think it's the best thing he's ever done.

Stick Figure Studios

I've seen a lot of people react to this show, but not a lot of mothers. It just hits extra hard with them.

DAVID COSTELLO

Cassie, if you do continue with Mike Flanagan shows or movies, you'll find he frequently works with many of the same actors, almost like a theater troupe. It's actually been kinda fun following his career as you see him pick up certain actors along the way and then how they keep reappearing in his future stuff. Also, you probably won't ever watch his movie Oculus (although I recommend it, as it's great), but it's almost a bit of a dry run for this show, with the family drama and the two separate timelines like this show had. But really if you do find yourself looking for more of what you saw and liked here, I'd start first with Midnight Mass. That show is considerably less scary, and is so immensely profound and touching. Anyway, I'm glad you watched this and really enjoyed your reaction. Your empathy on display with stuff like this is always so cathartic to watch, so thank you.

Stranger2Reality

Bout time for some First Contact! It's scary bbut not too scarty...wouda worked....2 birds one stone....I'm sure it's coming. Take up DS9 and Voyager, Cass...big commitment, but you can't skp ep's....won't work likt that.

Pianodean

After watching your first few episodes I had to rewatch the Series. All will be revealed in the end.🙂 Yep Nellie, time slips yes she is the Bent Neck Lady. Haunted by her future self.

Tim C

Yeah, I had them last in my rankings as well, but still very good. Midnight Mass and Hill House are masterpieces and Usher is superb. If she's gonna watch another one, she should watch Midnight Mass, definitely.

Stranger2Reality

MIDNIGHT CLUB and BLY MANOR, while not outright terrible, are definitely the weakest of the bunch I think. HILL HOUSE, MIDNIGHT MASS and HOUSE OF USHER are all terrific. I think MIDNIGHT MASS is the best thing he's ever done.

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely MIDNIGHT MASS.

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely MIDNIGHT MASS. Not a big fan of BLY MANOR myself.

Stick Figure Studios

Looks like you're hooked now 😃

Joshua Coe

Next up Bly Manor and Midnight Mass!

Derek Willerton

He co-created and co-directed Midnight Club. I put it as my least favorite of his shows, but it's still quite good and definitely worth watching.

Stranger2Reality

Ooh I think I missed Midnight Club...! I see now his name is also attached to it - and... coincidentally I know of a reactor who watched it. Maybe two? Laughs maniacally... perhaps I know what to watch next...!

Mannygogou

I think she should continue with horror movies, but she should be choosier with what she watches, picking ones that actually are great films, rather than just like "look how gory and depraved we can be!" I know some people just love watching Cassie squirm, and don't care if the movie doing that is actually any good or not. But even as a horror fan myself, those kinds of movies are not my thing. Something like Hill House has far more going for it than just the scares, which is why it was a good choice for her. Something like Saw, probably not so much. There's plenty of great psychological horror films out there that aren't violent and gory, but that instead just play on your psyche, and I always find those far better than just showing something gross or vile simply to shock the audience. I just hope the people choosing the movies in her future polls do a better job. But hey, it's her channel and she can do what she wants and I'll be here for it.

Stranger2Reality

The Haunting of Bly Manor is fantastic as well, as is The Fall of the House of Usher, and also The Midnight Club. My personal favorite is Midnight Mass, followed very closely by Hill House, then probably Usher, then Bly, then MC, but they are all great to excellent shows. I've seen everything Mike Flanagan has ever done, from his first short Oculus film (and later his big screen expansion), and even his feature film debut, Absentia. I have yet to see anything from him that I didn't think at least was very good, with much of it being excellent, or even masterpiece level works. IMO you can't go wrong with anything by him.

Stranger2Reality

I think I saw Bly first. My favorite is Hill House. I've seen all the others also. There are only 4 of them right? I should watch Midnight Mass reactions a few more times, maybe I'll like it better. Probably we all have different traumas so we gravitate to different shows.

Mannygogou

She wanted to release all of the episode on YT by Halloween but got behind schedule... because... well, it was explained why.

Mannygogou

I think she hates the genre (if she does) because it batters her senses for an entire month once a year. It would be no different if she did a war movie month where she watched nothing but Hacksaw Ridges and Saving Private Ryans. It would frazzle her and she'd learn to hate the genre. Dissipation of the frazzle makes sense to me.

Clarence Newman

Why she keeps doing October scaries is frankly a mystery to me given she hates the genre. YT views during October are the same as any other month. We can only speculate what % of her paying patrons are horror fans, of course we have no way of knowing. EDIT: I would also support her spreading out any horror films through-out the year, once a month or so is good with me.

Joe

White Knights and Dark Knights ASSEMBLE!!

Clarence Newman

One a month is exactly what I was thinking. As you say, dissipate the anxiety. I hope she gives the idea some consideration. PS: As a horror buff, I’d be content with ten or so scary movies total during the “off season.” I also wouldn’t mind, at all, if a couple of those were horror/comedies (homedies), such as “Abbott and Costello” meet Frankenstein” or “Private Eyes” (Don Knotts and Tim Conway). Then, put one scary movie on the schedule each week during October as a celebration/acknowledgement of the season.

Just Plain Bob

I agree with the idea of Cassie choosing films instead of a series, Bob - especially over such a short space of time, because that was clearly part of her anxiety with Hill House. Maybe if she'd given herself time to recover between episodes, like she did with The Last Of Us, she'd have enjoyed it more. I don't think we'd ever see more than one scary movie a month throughout the year, but one out of 12 slots would surely be a lot easier to take than 12 in a row, and horror buffs wouldn't have to wait till October to fill their boots. It's the only month where this kind of stress occurs (Horror fans battling for decent fare and white knights - yes, me included - trying to warn her off the top-end scary stuff), and I really don't think it's worked this year. I'm with Bob on this. Instead of having one single month where Cassie gets pounded by horrors one after the other, why not dissipate the genre throughout the year? That way she could bookend each one with pallet cleansers and the effect on her tender soul would be fleeting instead of relentless. October then becomes a normal month with all kinds of variety, and she watches one PROPER horror movie at Halloween. Simples!

Clarence Newman

As a horror buff, I’d rather Cassie had alotted the time given to this series to some scary movies. I also noticed that there wasn’t nearly as much white knighting about Cassie’s mental health as there is when she watches a scary movie, probably because the white knights liked this series, so they couldn’t care less how she was affected. So much for all that empathy they kept talking about. PS: I’d also point out that, if Cassie simply scheduled the occasional scary movie the way she does every other genre throughout the year, she could then back off on the October schedule. Perhaps only schedule one scary movie a week during the season. Unfortunately, she’s decided to never watch scary movies except for October. The cumulative effect is that she seems miserable during the month. And it doesn’t help that people keep telling her she can’t handle upcoming scary movies. They freak her out, then point to the anxiety they helped create as evidence that she shouldn’t watch scary movies - instead of simply admitting that they don’t like scary movies and would rather she didn’t react to them.

Just Plain Bob

I disagree about the issue of length. Some movies simply don’t warrant a three hour run time. IT Chapter 2 was such a movie. Frankly, I think both the first and second parts shouldn’t have run more than four hours combined. The story seemed stretched out. To be fair, I felt the same way about the novel. At 1,100 pages it was two or three times as long as it needed to be. Meanwhile, “The Stand”, also written by Stephen King, was the same length but the story didn’t seem overly long. I guess my point is that I don’t think Cassie believed IT Chapter 2 was too long just because of fatigue, I think she felt that way because there wasn’t enough story to tell to warrant that length. I certainly know that’s how I felt.

Just Plain Bob

With the greatest of respect to our Horror buffs, who have clearly loved this series of reactions, I'm really glad it's in Cassie's rear view mirror. She's so respectful of our affection for all the movies and tv shows she watches and she tries very hard to give a positive slant on each viewing experience, but nothing is going to persuade me that she enjoyed a single second of this show. She was invested, yes, but that's because she always cares about good characters. That's not the same as being entertained. And if anyone thinks I'm just knocking the horror genre, rest assured that's not the case. A great comparison would be The Last Of Us - scary, intense, often harrowing, but there was never any question that Cassie was enjoying the ride. Even at her most frazzled, she was always eager to watch the next instalment, and I just haven't seen that with Hill House. October is not for me, and I'm delighted for the horror fans who've enjoyed it. But I really am glad it's over.

Clarence Newman

I think it's more a case of certain films being too long for her to endure in one sitting, Bob. Remember, she's a veteran of rom-coms. which are, traditionally, 90 minutes and done. I think she can stretch to two hours, but there's something inside her that sags dramatically if she sees a run time over 2. It Part 2 is nearly three hours, PLUS she really didn't want to watch it anyway, so it doesn't surprise me she complained. This 8 episode edit of Hill House is massive, but Cassie only watched it in one or two hour chunks. She's putting it up as one video because she's behind and doesn't want her subscribers to wait any longer. Good to us, ain't she?

Clarence Newman

Hyper focused? I mentioned it. Why so piqued by that? Three hours is a long time for a YouTube video. And, when something is overly long, quality is diminished, as was the case with IT Chapter 2.

Just Plain Bob

The amount of views doesnt translate to quality, but stay hyperfocused on those numbers.

V M

HH 1-2 already has 61k views, I think HH 3-10 will do fine. She gets lower views on most of the really old movies.

Joe

She was originally going to release SAW on the 31st, with HH pushed to early November. I should be used to this by now (haha).

Joe

Given that one of Cassie’s criticisms (and rightfully so) of IT Chapter 2 was its length, it seems like an odd choice to bundle 8 episodes of this series into an almost three hour long YouTube video. Surely that will hurt the video’s viewing numbers.

Just Plain Bob

Had too much going on in October so she did a long video because it was easier and have a release for October 31

David Freese

I was surprised Cassie released 3-10 all at once on YT, instead of multiple releases each week. The YT crowd had to wait a long time.

Joe

They definitely looked familiar. Can't remember if I had them, but pretty sure some friends did. Nice nostalgic touch there.

Chris Thom

bravo, Cassie. 👏 way to tough it out. 🙌 definitely felt haunted after watching this too 😳 i watched Hill House after Bly Manor, so all i wanted was to fuzzy blanket Victoria Pedretti too 🤭 recommend The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass for next Halloween 😈

Ignis Rændl

Anyone notice little Luke’s Ninja Turtles bed sheets? He had the pillowcase and the sheets, but not the comforter. I had the whole set as a kid, but only have the comforter left. That Ninja Turtles comforter is, actually on my bed right now. It’s a great extra little comfort for when it gets colder. (-: Why are the old blankets and bed comforters the MOST comfortable? ;-)

Larry Darrell

Kind of an inspired idea to play this marathon tonight on the channel. Was fun to watch and come back to tonight. Thank you! And Happy Halloween!

Chris Thom

Haven’t seen HOHH, but am a big fan of Midnight Mass

2-Can

I jumped tiers especially because of this show. Seeing that you grouped most of the YT edit into one bulk viewing, I’m even more glad I did. The anticipation would have killed me.

Shad Kanyak

Agreed, I also think Cassie would like it even more than this simply because it's not nearly as scary.

Stranger2Reality

I think MM the best thing Flanagan has done so far.

Stick Figure Studios

Love this show, hopefully you'll consider the other Flanagan shows sometime in the future, especially Midnight Mass.

Stranger2Reality

Forwarding on to episode 8. We know what for. :)
