The Cabin in the Woods (2011) - Full Reaction

So unexpected! I’m glad I was watching with people live on this one to help explain and help me understand. I liked the different take on the tropes and that they went “deep” pun intended. Hope you enjoy!

Also a heads up about the schedule this week. HOHH 9-10 full reaction should be up tomorrow morning. Tomorrow evening we should have the YT edit for episodes 3-10. It'll be a looong video, but it'll be fun. Then (since YT is about a week behind) we'll try to get the Saw YT up ASAP, probably Sunday. Big Fish will also be up Sunday! Then next week we'll finish up with the rest of the scary movies on YT (What Lies Beneath and The Cabin in the Woods). I hope you all have a FANTASTIC fun and safe Halloween tomorrow. <3 you all, thanks for being here!!

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) - Full Reaction

I'm surprised no one told her about the "Firefly" connection.....

JRCortez

It’s about a group of people who do a comedy sketch show, a bit like SNL maybe, but it focuses more on the people and their relationships, it’s brilliant, I highly recommend it to everyone.

Delia P

Vaguely remember that being on. But never saw it. Is it about an improv group or something? Like Groundlings?

Chris Thom

Do you think the Fool archetype is usually insightful in horror films? My first thought was Randy from Scream, but not sure if he counts as that. Stu could probably equally be considered The Fool. Not sure I really understand the stereotype. Is it just the character that loves to party? Or do drugs?

Chris Thom

The funny thing is that Unicorns have had their image sanitized in modern times. In the old myths they were more like the one in the film, dangerous all who encountered them - unless they were a female virgin.

Richard Maurer

”It's basically a satire and indictment of cliched horror movie tropes, so the film's character motivations aren't really that important.” Fair point. I guess I wanted them to be taken a bit more seriously.

Grad

One of the main reasons I love this movie is specifically for the character Marty, he embodies the archetype of "The Fool," despite his awareness of the sinister events unfolding around him. In traditional storytelling, the Fool is often a character who possesses insight that others lack, often due to their unconventional thinking or perspective. Marty's apparent foolishness is paradoxical; while he seems carefree and perhaps naive at first, he also exhibits a deeper understanding of the situation. Throughout the film, Marty is skeptical of the tropes and conventions that the other characters embrace, which positions him as an outsider to the horror narrative they find themselves in. His awareness of the manipulation at play—the control exerted by the technicians in the control room and the larger ritualistic framework—allows him to challenge the expected roles within the horror genre. In this way, he functions as a critique of the genre itself, revealing the absurdity and predictability of the horror movie tropes that the others blindly follow. Marty’s role as "The Fool" is further underscored by his eventual survival; unlike his friends, who conform to the expected behaviors of typical horror characters, he resists these conventions, illustrating that the true "fool" in the story is not one who lacks understanding but rather one who refuses to play along with the established narrative. His character subverts expectations, serving both as a source of comic relief and as a voice of reason amid the chaos, ultimately highlighting the film's commentary on genre conventions and the nature of sacrifice.

I'm not a fan of horror flicks, but having said that - I love this movie! Don't overthink it, just go with it. The ending was perfect...but Cassie, it almost broke my heart to see your reaction to the Unicorn. It looked like it broke you.

crazyivan

I don't know, Marty seemed pretty nihilistic throughout the film. And considering what they had been put through, repeated attacks and the deaths of their friends at the hands of this weird organization, I can see them saying FU to the whole thing. But then I don't really think it's meant to be taken too seriously anyway. It's basically a satire and indictment of cliched horror movie tropes, so the film's character motivations aren't really that important.

Richard Maurer

I'm fine with the dark ending. I just didn't like how it was set up. The weird anti-human sentiment ("it's time to give someone else a chance") came out of nowhere and felt out of character. I liked the twist, with the fool still being alive. Maybe there could have been another twist like that. A mixup of the roles, the virgin not being the virgin - something like that. I think they could have done more with the roles.

Grad

i love how Little Shop of Horrors and Rocky Horror Picture Show somehow combined to become Rocky Mountain Horror Show. Cassie, keep being you.

Richard Maurer

love the ending - that's how horror films are supposed to end.

Richard Maurer

For most of the movie, I was trying to remember why it didn't leave a better impression on my first watch ~13 years ago. It's fairly entertaining. Then, that awful ending reminded me.

Grad

Interesting factoid .. the guy who played the fool wore long sleeve baggy shirts for a reason.. he was actually pretty muscular but they didnt want him to show that off because they already had Chris Hemsworth for that part.

Johnny Bullis

If you like The West Wing, you'll love another of Aaron Sorkin's shows, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Only 1 season, but pure gold, stars Bradley Whitford, Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet, Sarah Paulson and Timothy Busfield (who played the journalist Danny on The West Wing).

Delia P

I didn't know you watched West Wing? It's one of my favourite shows!

Alex Lee

You know what, Matthew? It sometimes needs to be pointed out how great Sigourney Weaver was (is). I think most people's attitude about the perfect, strong female character would be..."Go watch Alien!" And while they're at it, Ghostbusters, Gorillas In The Mist, Avatar, Holes, Galaxy Quest....." Plus she's a Beatles fan so she's pretty much the perfect woman.

Clarence Newman

Very fun watching you react to this one. Your reaction was pretty much my reaction the first time I watched it. Could never quite figure out what was going on until the end. Nice mix of serious actors (Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins), Buffyverse Regulars (Amy Acker, Franz Kranz, the kid who played the intern whose name I'm blanking on now) and Ellen MFING Ripley (The Great Sigourney Weaver) being in charge at the end.

Matthew Folz

Oof. All I do is watch TV and I can’t keep up with your viewing schedule. Are you actually a twin and not telling us?

Shad Kanyak

I love the meta elements in this movie. It's what makes it more than just a horror movie. Brought to you by Joss Whedon.

BibbitduBois

"Rocky Mountain Horror Show" made me legit laugh out loud!

G. T. Blackwell

I think the funniest part was when Cassie said 'Or... we get in the Winnerbedago and GO!'. Also could someone do a gif of the popcorn cushion going flying a couple of minutes before. This is why I love Cassie and this channel. Great stuff. She really puts the Ha in Halloween 🎃

Brett Richey

Cassie, when you said HOHH should be up this morning, you meant in the contiguous United States, correct? 😜jk I’m just jonesing for those final eps.

Bryan Erickson

😂 It would have been cool if Cassie closed out Scary But Not Too Scary October with a few of those episodes.

Dan M

Friday the 13th would've helped a bit. I remember seeing Scream before I knew most of the references and later backtracking from there. Still fun, though. You get the humor from the tone of the dialogue.

Chris Thom

What was I thinking.

Dan M

Oh, it won't be the last, Dan.

Clarence Newman

Watch out for the 7 dwarves and the 3 little pigs…you just never know

Dan M

lol…way to get one last plug in for an Officer and a Gentleman 👍

Dan M

Too much candy leads to nightmares! Treehouse Of Horror warned us years ago🤣

Katie Jackson

Happy Halloween Cassie 🎃 hope you guys have a fun night

Katie Jackson

I think you need a few more movies. You don’t appear to be busy enough. Maybe give up sleep? That seems unnecessary.

Shad Kanyak

Cassie'll never look at unicorns the same way....

Keith Jacobsen

I also just want to say, I don't really see a problem with being a little behind on your posting schedule. Most of us know you by now, and we know you try and get content to us as quickly as possible. But you also have a busy life as a wife and mom, where things come out of left field all the time. If the posting schedule slips a bit, so what? I hope it never stresses you when that happens, because it certainly doesn't hurt us. We look forward to your posts, of course - some (Officer and a Gentleman) more than others - but we understand if life gets in the way. So sayeth the flock.

Clarence Newman

I'll bet she got the clown.

Stick Figure Studios

I haven't watched this one yet, but this is the second scary movie in a row where you've apparently (according to comments) been at least ok while watching. I'm thinking that It Part 2 and Saw have desensitized you a bit. I think you'd find The Fly quite tender now. 😁

Clarence Newman

Well, color me surprised. I thought you'd hate this movie, but since you said in your outro that you "think you liked it," I once again have to admit that I underestimated you. I really need to stop doing that. I saw this one in the theater myself and I thought it was a very smart, very witty and at times very funny satire of horror films. You are right that the ancient angry gods are definitely a metaphor for scary movie audiences whose bloodlust must be appeased by human sacrifice in their entertainment. A very clever idea. The cameo of Sigourney Weaver at the end is just the cherry on top as she is one of the all-time great "final girls" in cinema.

Stick Figure Studios

The Weaver cameo is a lot of fun because she's one of the all-time great "final girls."

Stick Figure Studios

This is one of my favorite movies. It's so witty, well written. Chris Hemsworths character is so over the top. I love that everything from the begining pays off. They literally tell us the plot when they are in the cabin, yet it is still surprising when they tell you exactly the same thing at the end. Also the trope of no body/no death with Marty. I agree with you in regards to the story being about the audience as well.

Ian A

Happy Halloween Cassie, Carly, Ben, and family! Hope you have a boo-tiful day! Don’t eat too much candy, or it could lead to a monster stomachache. And Happy Halloween to PIB! 👻 👹 🧟‍♂️ 🧛‍♂️ 😱

Dan M

I think Cassie has watched enough horror to catch all the tropes. Looking forward to this one!

Wes

Are you doing a premiere for Hill House YT? That would be a long one. But maybe perfect for Halloween.

Chris Thom

I like the movie ok. I did a first watch with the reaction during the live. Great reaction, as usual. I was kinda glad that Josh bought it. Striking to see Sigourney Weaver. Sort of the opposite of her character in Aliens.

Clay F

Cool still got 7 - 8 of Haunting of Hill House to watch so 4 ep binge thursday then. Cabin was a fun reaction on the live. Much confusion lol
