Haunting of Hill House (EP 7-8) - Full Reaction

I can’t tell if this is my favorite or least favorite show! I can’t stop thinking about it. When I finished episode 8 the other night I wish you could have seen me absolutely sprint up my stairs away from the ghosts to my room where I slept with alll the lights on. Also, for those wondering where the YT edits for this have been, we didn't have room on the schedule this month to release them regularly so we're just going to release them in one big YT edit hopefully on Halloween!

Haunting of Hill House (EP 7-8) - Full Reaction

Comments

Has Cassie started drinking?

V M

That was the one part i was nervous about- that car jump scare. First time i watched it, i literally fell out of the chair onto the floor. While yes it’s a jump scare…even that can be an emotional moment. Nell just wants her family to focus on loving each other- and to stop fighting

Audrey

Haha... I'll take you'll word that it was 'frick' Cassie... but there does seem to be a conspicuous lack of an annunciation and sound of an 'r'.

Mojo One Thousand

I hope you noticed that the banging on all the doors and walls at the funeral home is exactly like what happened to the sisters in their bedroom, when they were kids, at the house.

Kelly Oehlschlager

I forgot about that jump scare and I reacted just like Cassie. I swear I felt my soul jump out of my body for a second.

Kelly Oehlschlager

Ghosts tend to do that when they're pissed. In the movie "Ghost", Sam Wheat knocked over a picture to stop creepy Carl from making out with Molly.

Clarence Newman

On the Kevin/Theo affair note, Steve made a point of mentioning Theo had not one, but two Ani DiFranco bumper stickers. Ani DiFranco was pretty famously into the ladies, and it surprised a lot of people when she eventually married a guy. Theo liking Ani DiFranco totally tracks with her character to be fair, but this could have also been a hint that maybe Theo likes both men and women. Given the context, it seems intentional to specifically mention someone that a lot of people assumed was a lesbian but turned out to swing both ways. Also, Ani DiFranco is great and everybody should give her a try.

Ian Tonge

"So many great monologues... Why do I feel like crying?" What you're experiencing is the art of writer/director Mike Flanagan. He writes fantastic monologues for his characters and he involves you so emotionally in the story that it is very moving and you end up crying. It's the reason why I love his work so much and look forward to whenever his whom he's working on. Without giving anything away, I suggest having some tissues with you for the final episode.

Stick Figure Studios

I always liked “Taps”, especially Ronny Cox’s performance (he always played a scumbag in most of the movies I’d already seen him in, so it was a nice change of pace). I will say, though, that between “Taps”, “Toy Soldiers”, “Dead Poets’ Society”, “Major Payne”, “Bill & Ted”, “School Ties”, “Dutch”, “The Ref”, and “Child’s Play III”; the movies of my youth had me convinced that there were a helluva lot more boarding, prep, and military schools in America than actually exist. (There were a suspicious number of “summer camp” movies in my formative years as well, and ski resorts for some reason.) My favorite Timothy Hutton role (other than “Hill House”) is probably “Beautiful Girls” (even though his “Lolita”-lite friendship with Natalie Portman’s character was a little uncomfortable). Still, I’ll always remember Hutton as the “Falcon”, however.

Matthew Clark

You're almost there. Doing great! I have been waiting on that jumpscare. Everything I thought it would be, and more! 😧

Samuel Champ

Good points Jessi. I am not always that perceptive.

Clay F

Mike Flanagan writes great monologues.

Stick Figure Studios

His accent has always bothered me. I’ve never heard anyone else mention it until now.

bknsty14

This was on a different level I thought. Traditional jump scares are a "sheesh" or "Frick,Frick, frick" and a lot of involuntary body movement. This was something else.

Brian McGovern

The fact that we've seen a lot of evidence pointing to Theo having a particular type, and Kevin doesn't fit the bill. Also, the way Kevin said, "Wait..." at the end of 6...it just dripped of innocence. Plus, he'd been such a solid guy...idk, there was far more evidence pointing to a misunderstanding than an affair. I was with Cassie on this one.

Jessi

She did the same thing in “Two Storms” when she knocked her own casket over after Steve said some seriously heinous shit to his dad.

Matthew Clark

Yeah, “Witness Marks” never fails to disappoint in the jumpscares department. Regarding the ending and how the house was lit: “Those tail lights, they were the worst. Red eyes in the dark just taking hope with them.”—Luke’s 90-day speech.

Matthew Clark

Sure sounded like it. I think she dropped it during the IT 2 reaction as well.

Alex Gorell

I don't know. But someone edited it to look that way. lol

Chris Thom

Steve and Shirley are fighting it out for the most obtuse and irritating in the family. It's close.

Chris Thom

Another thing about this show that’s so amazing is the seamless transitions between timelines. Like it’s 🤌

Modders

Turns out she was in fact sleeping with the director. But in a cute, totally acceptable way lol

Brandon Melling

Did Cassie drop an F bomb at the beginning of this?

bknsty14

Steve is so annoying and the actor's generic american accent doesn't help lol To be fair, the accent may just stick out because I know the actor is not American With Steve, I get it. I understand why he feels the way he does. But his attitude is irritating every time I watch the show. It's so satisfying to see Dad Crain shut him up, even if it was in a nice way lol

Jyn Jilly

I will say Carly's jumpscare in the beginning of Twisters is a good runnerup. I still dont know what startled her lol

Jyn Jilly

Of _course_ Theo listens to Ani DiFranco

Ian Tonge

Considering some comments I very recently made about “spoilers,” I don’t feel particularly comfortable saying at this time. All I can say is I really liked this series.

Larry Darrell

That was the jump scare I was waiting for. Your guards were down nicely lol

Mister Lou

Very true. Before I knew they were married, I was like, wonder if she's sleeping with the director or something because he really digs her.

Chris Thom

No spoilers, but did you like the way the series wrapped up at the end?

Chris Thom

It was in "LM Reactions" as I recall, two Serbians reacting to various TV series. One ended up in the other's lap processing just what happened. Being easily worked up over the spook elements didn't help when the moment came.

Michael Labs

Oooh, that was good. That was Fun. I watched this series earlier in the month, for the first time, over 2 nights, before watching the reaction, and was worried that watching it again for the reaction so soon, wouldn’t be as good, because there is so much drama. I was wrong to think that. I’m finding myself looking forward to seeing the dramatic moments, more so than the horror moments again. I’ve seen the Two Storms episode 3 times now. Last episode of my first night, then rewatched my second night. There’s so many moments that are beautifully acted in this series. Even the smaller roles like Mr. Dudley. Man that’s a great monologue. Timothy Hutton is killing it in this show. When he took the wheel and said, ok now you’re going to listen to me. I was like, hell yeah! There’s so many little comedic moments too, which I love in Hard Drama. (Praise Steel Magnolias ;-) like when Luke and Dad look at each other when Theo’s “girlfriend” comes in and the little wave. Or the Boob Punch. You have to have stuff like that. It makes it more real, and shows you there is light in the darkness. Can’t wait for the Last episodes. Thanks again. PS: Loved the Rocky style opening as well. ;-)

Larry Darrell

It did seem like that. It was like Nell was pissed they were arguing.

Clay F

That jumpscare is the most story progressing jumpscare I have ever seen. It was basically Nell saying "stop arguing!!!!!"

KaffeeKind

They do give Poppies, though, and I think Cassie might be up for one. Then again, her jump scare/leg cramp in "It Part 2" is going to be a close challenger.

Clarence Newman

Agree that the monologue by Dudley, Theo (on roadside), and the dad (Timothy Hutton in the car) were all three good. I don't how you knew that Theo and Kevin weren't really having an affair. Sensible conclusion in hindsight but the series seemed to lead that they were having an affair. I am sure you were perceptive about something. Theo can be bitchy but I think she is my favorite character in the series. I have not watched or read about the last two episodes (E9, E10). Looking forward to those. Timothy Hutton (who plays the dad in present time) is a good actor. I first saw him in a movie when I was a college freshman in 1982. The movie was "Taps" (1981) with Sean Penn and Tom Cruise. I thought he was good in the TV series "American Crime" (2015-2017). He is the youngest recipient of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, which he won at age 20 for his performance in Ordinary People (1980) (w/Donald Sutherland).

Clay F

Yeeeahh. I know there are some others, Bob, but to be honest, I always found them a bit disappointing. "Live & Smokin'" (1971) is terrible (I'm not sure why they released it), while "Live on the Sunset Strip" (1982) was after he had an epiphany about his lifestyle and, for me, the edge that was in the one truly great show was missing. Having said that, I used to have quite a few of his LPs and there was some amazing stuff on there. The man was a brilliant stand-up; they just didn't capture too many of them on video.

Clarence Newman

Mike Flannagan always gives Kate Siegel (theo) great monologues in all his work, he really loves her and her talent. they are the cutest couple

GillyBean

Good news, Clarence! Seven of Pryor’s most famous stand up performances are available as a box set of cds at Amazon. I listen to them on long drives.

Just Plain Bob

I do love Pryor, but alas, there's only one great stand-up of his available. Well worth watching, though: Richard Pryor Live In Concert (1979) - a comic genius at full throttle! As far as Cassie's concerned, the three Richard Pryor films I think she'd enjoy watching are Stir Crazy (1980), Brewster's Millions (1985) and See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989)

Clarence Newman

Episode 7 was almost a pause on the tragic and terror of the episode before. A little time to breathe...😅🙈 And you never saw the background ghost in the cellar! 😱 She was hiding behind the pillar and in the next frame when she was lurking over the shoulder of the police officer in the background...😅 With Luke - he was so guilt-ridden for not being able to save his sister, he wants to fight the house for what it has taken from him. He threw all reason and logic to the wind and believed again what he once knew - that the house is the heart of all their problems. And Theo, their dad and maybe even Shirley are going back to the house for the same reason, because of what they saw at the end. Steve too, and if only because he realizes everybody else is going there and he finally has to confront his suppressed traumas and fears. P.S.: The monologue of Mr. Dudley about his history with the house - man that was great acting! 😱 Technically just an older man telling a story, but you hang breathlessly on every word he speaks...🤩👌 Well that jump scare in episode 8 was very effective, I craned (no pun intended 😂) my neck when I flinched away from my screen...😅🙈 You were not the only one freaking out, almost everyone who had seen this for the first time did. I saw a guy reacting to this who actually fell out of his chair...🙈😱 By the way, you marvelled at the acting of "Theo" in that scene (and rightly so), but I marvelled equally at the acting of "Shirley", her subtle but very moving reaction to everything Theo says. You can see the proverbial ice crust she surrounded herself with beginning to melt.🤯 I knew that thing with Theo and Shirleys husband wasn't an affair. This is way more tragic and fits Theos character. And while Shirleys husband had kept secrets from her (like taking Steves money), he was always loving and loyal towards her whenever we saw him. Steve is not the only one who built up walls around himself, Shirley is just as "good" with it as him. Probably because they were older when they lived in the house and their dad didn't tell them anything, they had to make up their own minds. One became a control freak who cancels everyone who dares to disagree with her and the other one seeked shelter in believing in a family sickness, which is even more tragic, because it led him to destroy the possibilty of having a family of his own. 🙈 And Nell is still watching out for her family, even if it is in a way that could have landed them on a tree and joining her...😅🙈 I was very touched to learn that Theo isn't living with Shirley for the lack of money, but because she cares about her and tries to stop her from isolating herself more and more...🙂 I bet the mother saw the crazy lady in the vanity mirror...🤔 Since her picture was in the drawer, I would guess it was her vanity...😱🙈 Had the dad allowed his elder children to look or told them afterwards what had happened, maybe they would have found a healthier way to cope with everything. But I guess he was scared he would go to prison or an asylum or the kids would be taken away from him if they told everyone they were haunted by ghosts. For the police it must have looked very suspicious, like an abusive husband pushing his wife into suicide...🤔 I wonder what exactly really happened, but I guess we'll have to wait for the final episode to know everything. And there is still the "other body" we still didn't talk about...🤔😨 Well, I'll say it again - I admire your will to push your boundaries so much (💖) and of course this story got you hooked, that's what good stories do. I guess you're doomed. You'll have to finish it - not for us, but for yourself, there is no way you would not want to know how it all ends...😉😅 That was great as always, on to the next ones...😊

silverarrow06

Such a great series, Kate Siegel's monologue after the jump scare in Ep. 8 is fantastic. So emotional and real. The combination of scares and emotion is what makes this series stand out from other shows for me.

Chance Parker

Well Cassie; congratulations on joining the "Order of the Perfect Jump Scare". You took that better than some, including a young lady who had to sit with the show paused waiting for her soul to return to her body. We welcome you; we have no cookies though... however I offer this... Nell has been trying to get her family to listen and be on the same page since her death including the buttons on the eyes, the falling casket, the blackout, and the "STOP ARGUING AND LISTEN!!!" moment in the car. Yup, that was Nell. And not to worry Cassie; answers are on the way.

Michael Labs

Richard Pryor is the GOAT.

Just Plain Bob

If you're telling me 0:22 wasn't what I heard it was, and you want me to believe - I guess I can try real, real hard.

TechPriest

This is the one Ive been waiting for. Cant wait to see how Cassie handled "that" scare. I fell off my couch the first time watching it. But also as scary as that was, the scene right after with Shirl and Theo talking about how she just needed to feel something, anything destroyed me. Ive never watched a show or movie that had such whiplash when it comes to emotional beats, but yet they still all work so briliiantly.

Blake Evans

Bit of a bummer that she's looking to Harrison Ford for comfort after What Lies Beneath. She's been through the ringer this week.

Chris Thom

@JPB, "The Legend of Hell House" (1973) is excellent, would freak Cassie out for sure.

Joe

I don't think they give Oscars for Best Jump Scare Performance...but Cassie could've won an Oscar for that. It was amazing.

Chris Thom

I donno...that one felt real and it was bleeped and it was beautiful.

Chris Thom

Sure Cassie, sure. We have all seen the Poppies and you swearing up a storm.

Mike Lemon

@36:07 She turned to DiCaprio from Aviator for a sec

Jyn Jilly

haha how. could. you?!

Cassie

no haha! i just say frick a lot but sometimes it sounds like the other one haha

Cassie

You know what works the best for me and Wifey if a film or show unsettles us to the point of not being able to sleep? (Rare, but it happens.) Go find your favourite comedian and watch one of his/her stand-ups. No horror movie funk can survive a bit of Robin Williams, Lee Evans, Billy Connolly or Jamie Foxx.

Clarence Newman

Haven't made it past the intro yet, but this series scaring actual f-bombs out of Cassie is gold.

TechPriest

HOHH is an excellent horror/drama tv show, but it has almost nothing in common with the book it’s based on other than the name of the show, the names of three of the characters and the fact it’s a haunted house story. I’m hoping Cassie will watch “The Haunting” (1963) next year, for a really terrific movie that follows the book much more closely. PS: For anyone interested in horror literature, I do highly recommend the book by Shirley Jackson. While not as frightening as either the tv show or the movie, it is superbly well written and rightfully considered a classic of the genre. PPS: Also worth a look is “The Legend of Hell House” (1973), based on the Richard Matheson novel “Hell House.” Whether it’s the movie or the book it’s based on, both are worthy contenders for most frightening haunted house movie/book of all time. And Richard Matheson would definitely be on the Mount Rushmore of horror authors (along the Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, IMO).

Just Plain Bob

It's a good one, Joel, no doubt about that. But you'll find the GOAT in Cassie's reaction to Poltergeist.

Clarence Newman

I love how everyone says episode 8 had the biggest jumpscare in horror history cause it's a really exaggerated humorous moment. The ghost got so sick of the arguing that she scared them to shut them up LOL Literally the best moment in the show. The ghost did what I wanted to do throughout this whole thing

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Haven't seen this yet...but I do think the Cassie/Carly double jump scares from What Lies Beneath will put up some competition. And Saw might just inspire a whole new breed of JS.

Chris Thom

Cassie has a love/hate relationship with HOHH. Can’t say that I blame her. It’s such a good show, but it’s agonizing to see what this family has had to endure so far.

Dan M

Night plans made. Thanks, Cassie!🤓

Bryan Erickson

I did the same thing. I thought I was going to be disappointed. Nope. 😂. It certainly going to figure in Poppy awards. On another subject, I saw an interesting video that is about 6 years old. It was highlighting that in nearly every single scene set inside the house, you can see ghosts. In rooms at base of stairs, reflections in windows or cupboards, statues that change direction. I was so shocked that so much attention to detail was used. Couple of things I remember about this show, I remember feeling the young Luke was the most tortured kid, at least I had the most sympathy towards him, and I did not like the ending. I don’t remember exactly how it ended, I just remember not liking it. In case you have not seen it: https://youtu.be/nmE4M6puY-4?si=QJPw0fTIZrwG-Xqk

Brian McGovern

This has been a FANTASTIC two and a half days on the page. Love it. Thank you.

Chris Thom

So nice to get this early in the day. I'm confident after the end you'll feel like this show is up there as one of your favorites of the spooky season.

JohnnyUtah

The literal best jump scare in the history of filmed media. There’s nothing that even comes close. I know I’m not the only one who fast-forwarded to it.

Joel Baumgartner

Remember Cassie, it's when you sleep that Freddy gets you.😨

Joe

First. I’m skipping to the GOAT jump scare and watching Cassie’s reaction. I delight in such treasures haha 😏👻
