The Haunting of Hill House (EP 5-6) - Full Reaction

Comments

Have a feeling these take a while to edit. Especially this show.

Chris Thom

The watch-alongs are too much of a hassle for me and in any event, not everyone show or episodes warrants those. I signed up for the YT edits but I've never seen a 3+ weeks gap before.

Julien

I agree, I just went ahead and signed-up for the watch-a-longs. No telling when the edits will be done.

Joe

The slow pace of the release of the YT edits for this series is quite disappointing. The first video was Oct 2 and then nothing since then (3+ weeks)? The month is is almost over. 👎

Julien

Sometime I resist the urge to binge watch because... the episodes can begin to blur together and I end up missing details. Sometimes I fall asleep and missing things and rewind but I don't know but I actually missed stuff. But the true story here is that as I watched I didn't want it to end... also each episode is long and I didn't have the time - so I looked forward to having time to watch another episode. I ended up watching late at night in the dark around 2am type of time. All the lights off, pitch black with a giant tv.. it was quite awesome and immersive, wallowing in the mood in that world and savoring every minute muhahaha... lol

Mannygogou

Yeah that was a dark little message in that episode (or the whole series, really). But it's fairly accurate.

Chris Thom

When I first watched it I saw five episodes first, then five the next day. No way I could've waited weeks to finish it.

Chris Thom

I'm here now. I'm glad you continued with the series. When people say it's very scary now you know the truth. The show is loved not because it's scary, it's because of the other things. I just watched the 3 video reactions up to this point, in the same night with a break in the middle. It's around 6am, I understand you wanting to keep watching. I was like that too. In this last episode the camera didn't cut for the longest of times, you saw the camera going around in a circle but it didn't cut. You'll notice that more in a rewatch 😊

Mannygogou

Often times, we are the ones who haunt ourselves.

Jaccob Cortes

That's...beyond sad.

Ricardo Rodriguez

I didn't care for BLY MANOR as much myself, but I loved MIDNIGHT MASS and THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

Stick Figure Studios

A tragic thing about the twins is that when Nell stopped taking her prescribed drugs, Luke stopped taking his drugs.

Eddie

Wow…this series is just relentless with its emotional tug of war.

Dan M

Flannagan's next show Haunting of Bly Manor kind of creates a whole mythology and rules about what ghosts are, where they can go, and what they can do. They didn't fully flesh it out in this show, so there's a lot of mystery.

Chris Thom

I was wondering if the bent-neck lady may be a long-existing ghost.

Clay F

Great reaction! Bent Neck Lady is my favorite episode

Danny

She did a great job. The fact that she was so green in her career was a plus for this show, I think.

Chris Thom

She’s a Carnegie Mellon graduate. (As a Yinzer, I’m obligated to point out any connection between a famous person and Pittsburgh).

Matthew Clark

Bit of trivia I always like to share with reactors when they watch episode 5: the actor playing Dr. Montague (Russ Tamblyn) played the original “Luke” in the 1963 adaptation. (He also payed “Laura Palmer’s” shrink as well, for those “Twin Peaks” fans out there.) I gotta say, though, that I feel kind of bad for Flanagan after watching these reactions. He invests such passion and creativity into his work in order to find new ways to scare people, but clearly his careful filmmaking is nothing when compared to a fly. (I jest, of course.) If you have access to any kind of anti-anxiety medication, I would highly recommend you take some before you attempt the next few episodes. Cheers.

Matthew Clark

I'm sure it's been mentioned but a bit of trivia just in case. The actress playing adult Nell was fresh out of acting school when she auditioned for this role, and it was her first role in a show (I think she had a small role in a movie before). Obviously she killed it and won a ton of praise from critics and viewers alike.

Best “end credits” I could’ve ever hoped for, on a PIB reaction!

Bryan Erickson

No, I’m watching along with Cassie. So I’ll be watching episodes 5 and 6 tonight.

Dan M

Very cool long shots. There were some mistakes left in that they ran with. Like when Theo fell out of her chair.

Chris Thom

Always forget about that one. That would be fun for the channel.

Chris Thom

Her sanctimony was paid off in full a while ago.

Chris Thom

Have you finished the show yet? Or you watch along with her every week?

Chris Thom

Totally thought of that scene when she was doing that a couple weeks ago. lol

Chris Thom

RIP sweet Nell. I mean...after you get done haunting everyone. But still: RIP.

Chris Thom

Does anyone else appreciate horror; because women are irrationally Honest when they are scared ? Asking for a friend.

Uncle Phoenix

Among the countless heartbreaking moments of this show, Nells words hit me the most: "I was right here, the whole time, but none of you could see me!" 😭💔 After ep. 5, the bent-neck lady wasn't scary to me anymore, I just felt so incredibly sorry for her, she is so lost...🙈 As you said, this story is a family drama at its heart, sprinkled (very effectively) with moments of scare and horror. The real horror of this story aren't the ghosts, but the things people do to each other, like the abuse Theo uncovered (ep. 3) thanks to her gift, or Luke using Nellys love and desperation to get her to buy drugs for him. What Luke did is not uncommon for addicts to get their next shot, that is why Theo was so adamant to draw boundaries, as hurtful as it is to turn down loved ones. Luke and Nelly both new how wrong and mean this was, but both were desperate for different reasons and did it anyway. 🙈

silverarrow06

Shirl should’ve taken the book money directly. She could’ve invested it in her sanctimony.

Just Plain Bob

Cool, Cool. I was hoping she would either know it or think it familiar. Sounds like she hit on all the recognizers. Cool. :-)

Larry Darrell

Urban Legend - 1998

V M

She had an immediate reaction of "I've seen that movie." Seconds later, after paying closer attention to Grace Kelly, she wasn't sure. My guess is she initially thought the movie was North by Northwest. She knows the strikingly beautiful Grace Kelly from Rear Window, but I think at first glance of the TV here, she saw Carey Grant and a blonde, leading her to think North by Northwest in that first glance -- but then seem to correct herself that she had not seen the movie. To Catch a Thief (1955) is on my watchlist.

Clay F

If she makes it through IT 2? If not, I'll be needing a refund.😆

Joe

Yes. The bent-neck lady was Nelly the entire time. And what Nelly saw in the house before she died was what the house knew she wanted to see and hear. That's why they're all saying they believed her. Because that's what she wanted all her life.

Eric

Thanks Larry

Dan M

Episode 5 I believe.

Larry Darrell

Will that be coming up in one of these 2 episodes? I didn’t catch it if it was in one of the first 4 episodes.

Dan M

But hopeful.

Stick Figure Studios

I bet Carly would identify with the bent neck lady with her frequent neck cracking.

Shad Kanyak

Haven’t started these yet, been waiting to this point. and been curious… did Cassie by any chance recognize the film that she hasn’t seen yet… To Catch a Thief (1955) that Nell and Arthur were watching during their Romantic montage? That was Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in one of Hitchcock’s finest if you didn’t know. Might be a good one for New Year’s. :-)

Larry Darrell

ok i gotta do the thing the two storms episode, has really long takes in it, which is why the camera spins so much. the first take was 17 minutes i think. theres a really cool behind the scenes somewhere. some crazy camera trickery going on. Mike Flannagan is known for his long takes in his shows. but i dont think he ever topped that episode.

GillyBean

So happy you are continuing your reaction on this series. Also, I totally agree with the fact that they need a big hug... but the thing is then I look at you and I feel like actually someone else also needs big hugs :D I hope you have someone

Cassie's Comfort Zone ---------------------------> Cassie Respect.

Clarence Newman

The actress playing Nell is good.

Clay F

Great reaction. I know nothing of the remaining episodes. I am curious to see what happens.

Clay F

Bent-neck lady is going to hurt Cassie’s feelings 😏

Wes

I've been wanting this for three years. Two of the best episodes of TV ever.

Richard Mouritzen

The Lamaze breathing to calm yourself was adorable.

Justtired

This is kind of like Hot Fuzz where every single little detail is either a setup or payoff, but instead of jokes it's all just brutal emotional gut punches. The whole cast is great, but I think the actress playing adult Nell is phenomenal. She probably had the hardest role to play and she absolutely nailed it.

Ian Tonge

This show has been the highlight of this October with PIB for me so far. I’m 100% invested in it, and like you, I’m very heartbroken over what this family has had to endure. I’m excited and nervous over what may be coming in the next few episodes. Can’t wait to watch along tonight.

Dan M

I just literally finished 3/4. Am listening to Cassie's ''End Discussion'' as I type this. Thanks Cassie, I LOVE this show, no matter how MANY times I rewatch it!!!

Diiirk706

I warned you. Like having your soul ripped out through your tear ducts. It's suspenseful and scary, but above all it's heartbreakingly tragic.

DAVID COSTELLO

Fast forwarding to that scene....😁
