The Frighteners (1996) - Full Reaction

This was crazy!! How can you not love Michael J Fox?! There were a lot of stories going on at once and a little much for me at times but watchable, entertaining and a villain so vile you could die!

Good morning Clay. So I watched this movie last night…it was late, so that may have played a part in my overall experience with it. But all in all, I thought it was just okay. I enjoyed watching MJF tackle a different role other than what he is so well known for. There were some aspects of horror that I really liked (the giant worm like thing at the end was cool). And there were some genuine chuckles here and there. But the problem for me was that this movie didn’t know what it wanted to be. A horror movie with some comedy thrown in, or a comedy with some horror elements. When the movie first started and I heard the music, I immediately got Beetlejuice vibes. I guess I was just expecting more knowing that it was a Peter Jackson movie. But like I said, it was late and I was tired. So I’m not against giving it another watch when I’m more alert. Looking forward to watching The Village with Cassie tonight (hopefully not as late 😁).

Doesn’t seem odd at all to me, because I’ve asked other Patrons what they have thought of movies that they had seen before. I love getting a fresh perspective, especially when it’s a movie I’m passionate about.

Thx for reply Dan. I know may seem odd me asking about it but I am curious what a reasonable person having never seen the movie thinks about the movie.

Hey Clay. No, I haven’t watched it yet. I’ve been working late everyday since Monday. It’s been a really busy week for me so far. The only movie and reaction I’ve had a chance to watch is Star Trek Generations, which I’ve been waiting for since Cassie started her Star Trek journey. Not sure what time I’ll be working till today, but if I get home early enough I’m gonna try to get it in.

The judge is played by John Astin, who is the stepfather of Sean Astin--Samwise Gamgee himself.

This is one of those movies I haven't seen it in a such long time, that each time a new scene comes on it's like an old childhood memory is unlocked. For some reason the last scene, having first seen it in the 6th grade, combined with "Don't Fear The Reaper" playing, one of my first times hearing it, is a moment I viscerally and extremely specifically remember thinking for the very first time "it would be so cool to have a girlfriend". Something about her chasing MJF with the blanket I guess, haha.

There was a spooky story in the making-of feature of a ghost that lived in Fran Walsh/Peter Jackson’s apartment. It had a “screaming face” expression and would occasionally show up in their bedroom.

Cassie is about to have a side swipe with Cary Grant very soon. Maybe it’ll help, if she recognizes him. I’m sure some of us won’t let it go unnoticed though.

Kinda True. He was actually a pretty hot commodity after Heavenly Creatures. Got offers for a new Freddy, Planet of the Apes, and almost did a version of Kong that was tonally more like The Mummy. Robert Shaye of New Line was the one who ad faith and said it should be 3 movies. Frighteners was definitely the one saw that gave me a sense he could pull off LOTR. It has that feeling that Jackson had a balance on character, action, and darkness.

Yes, the dream for Arsenic and Old Lace is still alive. Don't know if it could happen though! 🤣🤣
The way I will never forget Troy Evans is he was Laura Palmer's principal on Twin Peaks, and he had the grim job of announcing her death on the high school intercom.

Don't know how accurate the story is, but when Jackson was pitching LOTR, he asked for 2 movies due to story length. He was given 3 since there was 3 books. Then his backers saw his early filmography and thought they made a huge mistake. Fortunately they didn't.

Peter Jackson did another horror movie that what my friends and call carnage candy its called Dead Alive (1992) now this is absolutely not for Cassie way too much gore and completely disgusting in parts but I sold mine my copy to a guy in Florida for yeah I don't know. All those horror movies gone 😭. The Frighteners we can that imagine Susan Atkins, Charles Manson, and Linda Kasabian earned their one way ticket to hell. I am sure the man downstairs rolled out the red carpet for them.

“Burial Berial” is now my new favorite Cassieism.
Troy Evans, who played Sheriff Perry, has been in a ton of Movies and TV Shows since the mid 80s and I was thrilled to see that he was familiar to you, Cassie. Evans is a terrifically talented character actor and a pretty darn funny one to boot as well. There are countless movies and shows that you might recognize him from, but to myself and I’m sure others, he will always be…
Frank Martin, the check-in desk clerk in the ER at Cook County General Hospital in Chicago, on the TV series E.R., which ran from 1994 - 2009 for 15 seasons. Troy Evans’ Frank character became a regular in the 7th season, but was introduced in the Series Pilot. Highly, Highly, Ever So Highly Recommend, E.R.
Not as a show to React too, obviously, but just a show to really enjoy. (Unless you want to React to it, I wouldn’t say no). Waaaaay better than Grey’s Anatomy I assure you.
There’s a scene in Frighteners which recalled another film for me. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say…
Flatliners (1990), starring Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland, and directed by Joel Schumacher (The Lost Boys and A Time to Kill).
There are some Supernatural/Horror/Thriller elements in the film which make this a great time to consider it. Highly Recommended.
Charles Starkweather, who Busey’s Bartlett mentions a number of times to be competing with, was a real person who in the late ‘50s, along with his 14 year old “accomplice,” murdered 11 people over the course of 3 months, most of them in the span of a week.
Maybe the most famous, IMO best, film made about this murder spree was the film…
Badlands (1973), starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek, and making his directorial debut, the highly revered Terrence Malick. Highly Recommended.
Jake Busey, who played Johnny Bartlett, could have been recognized by you from Contact (1997), playing the evil religious terrorist, or Identity (2003), playing the convict who “tasted” a baseball bat, or Stranger Things season 3, playing one of the not so nice guys who worked at the newspaper. If it was Starship Troopers (1997) that you first recognized him from, which is one of his nicer characters, then nice going, because Johnny Bartlett was more similar with the three other roles, which are a type that Busey does very well.
According to your Letterboxd, there was another actor that you should have recognized.
Trini Alvarado, who played Lucy, also played Meg, in Little Women (1994), alongside Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Samantha Mathis, Susan Sarandon and Christian Bale. Perhaps this deserves a re-watch… or if not, then perhaps trying out the 1949 MGM version of Little Women, with Janet Leigh, mother of Scream Queen (-: see what I did there;-), Jamie Lee Curtis, playing the role of Meg. Both work great for Christmas ;-)
Speaking of Scream Queens, I have to mention Dee Wallace, who played Patricia. Cassie would know her best as the Mom in E.T., but she has many more memorable roles in some of the best horror films from the 70s & 80s on. Please check out…
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
The Howling (1981)
Cujo (1983)
Critters (1986)
Popcorn (1991)… why has no one recommended this one before? I blame myself ;-)
and honorable mention, The Stepford Wives (1975), which Dee Wallace has a minor role.
All Recommended!! (Why Not :-)
The actor who played FBI Agent Milton Dammers, Jeffrey Combs, is a Horror film legend as well, as others have been mentioning. I’m sure they can do better than me. I’ll just mention one, which is maybe his greatest, or just best known…
Re-Animator (1985)… Do we recommend? Or do we see how The Fly (1986) goes first ;-)
Of course, last but not least, I have to mention Michael J. Fox. We all know and love him. So let’s not forget some of his unseen films for Cassie to see at some point…
The Secret of My Success (1987)
Casualties of War (1989)… tough watch, but great film
The Hard Way (1991)
Doc Hollywood (1991)… great for Tender November
Last Last… Cassie mentioned The Frighteners had been suggested a lot, and had been close in the polls, but never made it. Well, the next film that fits that category, has to be…
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)… right?
Come on all you Classic Film Lovers!! Never Give Up, Never Surrender!!!
Chaaaaaarrrrgge! ;-)

It's all over the place, but I've always liked this one. A wild, crazy and bizarre ride with a lot of horror elements, but I think it's mostly a comedy. I saw it initially because of the Robert Zemeckis/Michael J. Fox connection (I didn't know who Peter Jackson was at the time). I'm surprised you didn't recognize R. Lee Ermey from FULL METAL JACKET as the drill instructor ghost (he even literally says, "Sound of like you've got a pair" at one point). You almost recognized Jake Busey (Johnny Bartlett). You were right there. You said, "That's the guy from..." and forgot to add "STARSHIP TROOPERS and CONTACT." :-)

Love this movie and in addition to it being a Peter Jackson production, it was also a Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) film, he was he Executive Producer.
I still have the VHS copy of this film and the box has a holographic image and the face would come out toward you when you moved it. :)
Did you catch Peter Jackson's cameo? He was the guy that Frank (Michael) bumped into coming out of the newspaper building in the beginning wearing the Grim Reaper shirt. He also made cameos in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

My guess is what made it the most hard for Cassie to get into the movie is the movie being "convoluted" -- her word. But those special effects are good (and some creepy).
As for ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, that is on my watchlist as I have noted before. Maybe she will react to that eventually.
Last month, Hold Down A (Ames) reacted to ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, which I plan to watch that full reaction at some point.

Awesome reaction! I'm not surprised that it was hard for Cassie to get into this rather gross out movie! I remember being blown away when it came out by the special effects. They were really spectacular for the time. Is this a horror comedy or a comedy horror. I'm not sure of the difference, but I think it is the later, with more an emphasis on the horror. You know what is one of the first classic horror comedy movies? ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, which would be a great movie to watch this month! 😄😄😄

This is always such a fun ride of a movie.
The poster really skews the cinemascore of it. It is so good but does not reflect the comedy of it at all.
To your comment of "who's this?" in regards to the FBI agent, i know you were making the comment about the character, but it has a fun double meaning for those of use who know the actor and his other work. Let's just say, if you continue on with your Star Trek journey, you will be seeing much more from him.
Great way to kick off the month.

I say this in the most lovingly way but Peter Jackson is a twisted kinda dude! Before LOTR he was making the most disgusting horrifying stuff, and with such perverse glee. He loves gross out stuff. So I shall warn you now DO NOT EVER watch any of his earlier horror movies XD they are not to your taste AT ALL. maybe read a synopsis one day but thats it haha
But The Frighteners is a joy. I have a lot of nostalgia for this movie.

“My joints are getting’ fluttery. The dog’s runnin’ away with my face. Hell, I’m fallin’ apart!”
The Judge is played by John Astin... who was also Gomez Addams in The Addams Family series from 1964. The incomparable Rick Baker accomplished this incredible transformation into The Judge. Rick Baker is why The Academy Awards added a Best Makeup category after his groundbreaking work in American Werewolf in London... and some of those same effects were used to turn Michael Jackson into a werewolf in the Thriller video.

This is very much if "Ghost" and "Beetlejuice" had a baby in the mid-90s, the Danny Elfman score helps that along. Haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember enjoying it a lot.
I think this was Michael J. Fox's last feature film as a lead before semi-retiring due to his Parkinson's disease. He went from this into the lead of TV sitcom "Spin City" which start in the second half of 1996. He didn't really have to travel much for that, as it was in New York. However, I think the hours didn't help and you actually see his symptoms getting worse (despite medication) as his run on that show ended after four season - it was a great show that wasn't the same without him.
I think "Doc Hollywood" should be back on the table for "tender" November, because it is a solid film with some familiar faces - I think it may have been the movie he was working on when he got his diagnosis. Also, Cassie, if you haven't seen "Still: A Michael J Fox movie", it's worth a look, it is a documentary from 2023 that chronicles his life/career through the lens of his Parkinson.
Almost got there with Jake Busey, started saying "St..." and bailed out. I think there was a bit of recognition for R. Lee Ermey but wasn't placed, it did help that he was playing a similar character to "Full Metal Jacket", he's the police captain in "Se7en" for me. Troy Evans, "Sheriff Walt" was familiar to you as as much as everybody as it is often a side character in some bigg-ish movies, on the channel the he was a cop in "Demolition man", but he probably more recognisable from "Ace Ventura", which from what I can see Cassie has seen before the channel.
I checked to see when this was release in Australia, and it was until about 9 months after the rest of the world, so we got it in 1997. This would have been because of the Port Arthur massacre, which occurred in April 1996, only a couple of months before the release to other parts of the world. The plot of this film has some coincidently similar content to that tragic event so it makes sense.

Lucy Lynskey is named after the actress Melanie Lynskey, who has a really brief cameo in this and starred in Jackson’s preceding film Heavenly Creatures. That movie is a much more serious true crime story. The killers are loosely based on Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate who killed 11 people in 1958. A lot of movies have been based on them, I’d recommend Badlands over any of the others or just listen to the Bruce Springsteen song Nebraska.
I think the FBI guy is partly a riff on Fox Mulder from the X Files and Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks filtered through a NZ sense of humour. There were a bunch of scammers during the Satanic Panic of the late 80s and early 90s who claimed to have been involved with satanic cults and things like that who were now fighting on the “good side” and he has a bit of that energy.
Jacob King

A first watch of the movie for me. I thought the FMJ drill sergeant was a nice touch. Good special effects. Visually striking. "A mess with sporadic flashes of creativity." Interesting premise -- though logic (even for a horror fantasy) seemed abandoned at times. "This FBI agent is so weird." -- Yep. I like Michael J. Fox. His character's dead wife is pretty. I like the twist with the Dee Wallace character actually being evil. I like the twist at the very end with Dr. Lucy being able to see.
Good ending -- that's a positive -- have the happy couple = Dr. Lucy and MJF character.
Cassie: "A lot going on. Maybe a little too much for me .... Convoluted." You are not the only one who thinks that. It was "exuberant" direction by Peter Jackson. The story approaching "hysteria" and "roams all over the map." In defense of the movie, a comment below by Patrick made sense: “This movie is paced like a rollercoaster ... and you just hang on and go along for the ride.”
For my personal tastes, I rate the movie at 2/4 and unlikely will watch again. I am not saying the movie is bad but instead not my kind of movie. I liked "Zombieland" and "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" much better. I have watched Zombieland several times. I watched Tucker & Dale 3 times (the first being with your reaction).
I rate "Lord of the Rings" at 4/4. Watched the trilogy many times. Never get tired watching. My top Peter Jackson (in which he is directed) are:
1. Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003) [Top 20 of all movies all time for me.]
2. They Shall Not Grow Old (2019) [Documentary]
I liked King Kong (2005) ok but don’t really remember it, except maybe some of Jack Black.
I have not seen Heaven Creatures (1994), but want to see it.
I have not seen the Hobbit movies (except small portions).
I watched Lovely Bones (2009) and now The Frighteners (1996). I don't remember The Frighteners (1996) being released. My daughter was born in 1996 and thus I was distracted. Plus, I generally had zero interest in ghost movies.

Agent Dammers wasn't really trying to kill anybody except Frank. He was convinced that Frank was killing everybody in town using psychic powers, and he was just going to execute him vigilante-style, but he seemed to want to make Frank admit to being the killer first. It's a little hectic at times but I like the idea of a movie having two villains (or three I guess) in separate plots who aren't working together and who have opposite motives. Also Dammers is just such a weird and hilarious character, he eats up the scenery every minute he's on screen.
This movie is paced like a rollercoaster to me, and you just hang on and go along for the ride.

Cassie, Peter Jackson’s early films included “Bad Taste” and “Dead Alive” (aka “Braindead”), both of which were horror comedies (with a heavy dose of sci-fi thrown in for “Bad Taste”) and both of which were EXTREMELY gory. In fact, “Dead Alive” was marketed as the goriest movie ever made. I remember when it was first announced that “The Lord of the Rings” was being adapted to the big screen by Peter Jackson, thinking what an odd marriage of man and material it seemed to be at the time. Obviously, it worked out really well.
A few notes about the cast. The part of Death/Johnny Bartlett was played by Jake Busey. The reason he looked so familiar to you is that he was also in “Starship Troopers” as Ace, Johnny Rico’s best friend/right hand man. I was very surprised that you didn’t seem to recognize R. Lee Ermey (Hiles, the cemetery’s Master Sergeant); he played the drill instructor that drove Pyle to murder/suicide in “Full Metal Jacket.” (Fun fact: my former boss/mentor was the spitting image of Ermey. He intimidated the hell out of me at first because I couldn’t get past the similarity. Turned out to be the best boss I ever had.)
You’ve also seen actress Dee Wallace, who played Patricia, the murderous accomplice, before: she played the mother in “E.T.” She is a genre icon, having also starred in “Cujo” (based on the Stephen King novel of the same name) and “The Howling” (which I’m desperately hoping gets a Cassie reaction someday), among other horror movie favorites.
Now, a couple of cast members you’re not familiar with but which hold a dear place in my heart. The Judge was played by John Astin, who previously played Gomez Addams in the 60s tv comedy “The Addams Family” (one of my favorite tv shows of all time – I have the entire series on DVD). John Astin also happens to be the adoptive father of Sean Astin, who you know better as Rudy (in the film of the same name) and as Samwise Gamgee in “The Lord of the Rings.”
Finally, my personal favorite among the cast was Jeffrey Combs as FBI agent Milton Dammers. Combs is an absolute legend in the horror community, primarily for playing Herbert West in “Re-Animator” and its sequels but also for his roles in “From Beyond” and “Castle Freak” (all three of which are based on stories by H.P. Lovecraft – Stephen King forty years before there was a Stephen King, but better). Combs has also played several different characters in several different “Star Trek” tv shows. Definitely a genre icon.

Always classy, sometimes, sassy Cassie,
No spoilers, dang but I can say on medical Vlog. Best to do it there. Michael J. Fox was in Greedy (1994) with Kirk Douglas that was hilarious. It's almost 5am here we have to be at church at 0830.
My eyes are so tired they are having trouble staying open. We followed you on Instagram yesterday. You seem like you two had fun . Which is the most important thing.
There was something I was going to do but I can't remember. I just want to go back to sleep. Two dogs one cat and one gf. Alot to sleep with. Good bye for now need to get back to sleep.
I am always glad to hear from you in the middle of the night. Helps me sleep more peacefully.
Just remember to you and Ben and Carly you always have our ❤️ and 🙏

Always thought this was a little underrated tbh, always have fun watching it. A couple of other fun MJF films are Doc Hollywood and The Hard Way. But I see your keeping us waiting for your Star Trek: Generation reaction 😂, it’s not a problem I just can’t wait to see your reaction.

oh also Cassie, The Judge is played by John Austin who was the original Gomez Addams in the TV Addams family, and he’s the adoptive father of Sean Astin aka Samwise and he’s still alive at 94!

The best MJF movie outside of BTTF. King Kong, Heavenly Creatures and The Lovely Bones are other great Peter Jackson movies.

My favorite Peter Jackson film is getting a lot of love lately and I couldn’t be happier. This is a movie my mom and I bonded over. It was the first time we both realized we liked scary movies.

In case anyone's wondering, judging by the reaction time, this is for the theatrical cut.
This movie strikes a great balance between scary and fun. Looking forward to watching it later.
Also, a fun addition that it served as a sort of grand rehearsal for The Lord of the Rings. Although the studio needed some convincing, it was ultimately filmed entirely in New Zealand, proving that the technical and logistical challenges could be handled. I also believe this was the project that launched Weta Digital to the big league proving they can handle effects for A tier movies like LotR.

Woohoo, October is upon us. I think I need an ugly orange sweater and Pumpkin Spice Latte to watch this reaction.
