2024-09-24 17:23:59 +0000 UTCKick-Ass has "moderate" rating for sex & nudity on IMBb parent's guide, the same as several movies Cassie has reacted to and less than the "severe" rating that True Detective S1, BS Dracula, and Deadpool all three have. In general, sex can be good in movies if not gratuitous but instead to advance a setting or time, character development, a plot, etc. I agree that good storytelling is awesome.

2024-09-24 17:21:15 +0000 UTCSo if Aaron Taylor-Johnson does become the next Bond, that means that we'll have two consecutive Bonds that have been in Matthew Vaughn films which included a bright yellow range rover and Dexter Fletcher playing a character named Cody. That feels like a pub quiz question in the making. I enjoyed the movie when it came out, but I have to say I'm not sure it's aged terribly well when taken as a whole. Much of it comes across as trying to be shocking just for the sake of being shocking, which might have appealed to younger me but doesn't really do anything for older me. Mark Strong is always a treat though, especially as a villain.

2024-09-24 04:47:48 +0000 UTCI remember enjoying this movie when it first came out in theaters but as I've gotten older, the more I've started to dislike this movie and how it's become emblematic of a larger issue I have with Hollywood: The over-reliance of sex and violence in place of good story telling. Take away the excessive sex and violence from Kick-Ass and what are you left with? A very thin plot.

The jetpack lost me. It became Deadpool as a little girl at that point. Points for creativity, but it's the dysfunctional Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Personally, I think the reveal of John Blake as "Robin" in The Dark Knight Rises felt like a cheap nod to the audience rather than a genuine adaptation of Robin's legacy. It seemed like they just wanted to throw in the name without truly honoring Robin's history or the dynamic he has with Batman. To me, John Blake’s legal name being Robin doesn’t actually make him Robin. It’s like watching a Captain America trilogy that completely skips over Bucky, and then in the third film, they introduce a new character only to casually reveal at the end that his name is "Bucky." It would feel incredibly underwhelming for fans of the character and leaves us thinking about what we could’ve experienced instead. But Technically I guess that was a version of Robin, even if I don't count it myself.

2024-09-23 19:28:16 +0000 UTCIt's surprising that Kick-Ass is one of the few superhero films to feature a young teenage sidekick, especially in a world where Robin has been conspicuously absent from live-action films since Batman & Robin (1997). And even then, the Robin we got in the 1990s was played by a 24-year-old Chris O'Donnell!. It’s been 26 years since we’ve seen Robin in a film, so thank you, Kick-Ass, for giving us a badass sidekick! Big Daddy and Hit-Girl the Dynamic Duo I never asked for but definitely needed. Also is it just me, or is Nicolas Cage channelling Adam West's Batman with his mannerisms and voice as Big Daddy?
