Eddie the Eagle (2016) - Full Reaction

Comments

Seen this many times, and the emotional chills it triggers in me countless times are incredible. That music score is incredible, pure chills when it starts on the 90m zoom in.

Michael

Great movie! Even better reaction Cassie! Love seeing your heart in this…very special.

Jeffrey Smith

I almost didn't watch this, but I am so glad I did. What an amazing, feel-good Cinderella story!

Eddie Perkins

This is why I watch this channel. I do not think I have enjoyed a watch along like this in quite some time. Sure it may have been based on a true story, but it certainly wasn't the REAL story, but who cares. It was a welcome relief to see this again.

Brian McGovern

Finally Somebody watches Eddie the Eagle, thanks!

tgriexterminator

Whoa, I was just going for the easy pun.

2-Can

To be clear, Matthew Vaughn only produced the movie through his MARV production company. He did not write or direct it. It was directed by Dexter Fletcher who replaced Bryan Singer with the Queen biopic and was also an actor in 2 Smoking Barrels I think was the movie. He played the chef or cook.

Brian McGovern

About the elevator scene with Eddie and Matti, no it didn't happen like that, but what was accurate is that Eddie said Matti was nice to him, and they did end up spending a lot of time together in the towers, since Eddie had to go up there early because of his glasses fogging up. Also Matti was kind of famous for his strange philosophical sayings about life and sports, so I guess that's where they got the idea for the elevator scene.

Christopher Walken (the "more cowbell" guy) is awesome in “The Deer Hunter" (1978). He won an Oscar. THE DEER HUNTER (1978) [AFI Top 100] --Won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. --Christopher Walken won Best Supporting Actor Oscar. --Robert De Niro nominated for Best Actor Oscar. --Meryl Streep nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Can’t hardly wait ’til Cassie and Carly get to Deadpool & Wolverine.

WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN is great and reminds me of another true story called THE STRAIGHT STORY, which is just a beautiful movie. The latter is directed by David Lynch, who is acknowledged as a genius who excels in uncomfortable scenes and is prone to excess. THE STRAIGHT STORY is none of last two, because, reportedly, he was broke and did it for the payday. As part of the agreement to direct and get paid, he had to have an editor and final cut approved by the studio (Disney). The result is one of the most beautiful, lush and heartwarming "small story" movies ever made.

Also: BREAKING AWAY and oddly but fondly GOON (hockey movie).

Yes! 👍

Writer/Director/Producer Matthew Vaughn did this movie. 😁 Some of his you've reacted to are Snatch, X-Men First Class, X-Men Days Of Future Past, Stardust. If you haven't already seen them, and want more definitely do Kingsmen: The Secret Service & Kingsmen: The Golden Circle. Taron Edgerton is in both of them. 😁

Zane From Canada

Nice, hope she watches it soon. Never seen any of the Night at the Museum films or Cheaper by the Dozen. But thought The Adam Project was I bit of a surprise and it kinda had the same feel that a 80s,90s movie had so it felt a bit nostalgic. Maybe it’s because there was lots of great little sci-fi moves back then that we don’t seem to get anymore. The last film I can think of other than this one is Ready Player One.

Dean Holt

Not seen Black Bird yet and I’m might be watching I,Tonya for the first time tonight. Just having a quick look to see if it’s steaming on anything before I rent it. But yes I definitely agree he was amazing in Rocketman and I really enjoyed the film and I’m not really a Elton John fan.

Dean Holt

"Real Steel" was one of the 5 movies I gave to Cassie recently, I had a family/community theme going. This movie surprised me when I first saw it, as my nephews love it so I have seen it many times. I thought it would be a good choice for her to react to at some point and then be able to share with her family. Fun facts: "Real Steel" is directed by Shawn Levy who also directed Hugh Jackman in the recently released "Deadpool and Wolverine", and also directed one of the movies that Cassie is still deciding on from my 5. And, if I had to pick a directed that has the biggest impact on Cassie's cinematic experience I would pick Shawn Levy, as he was involved in so many movies that are Cassie mentions prior to the channel, things like the "Cheaper by the dozen" movies, the "Night at the Museum" movies, and "Date Night".

Mojo One Thousand

Glad this made the list even though it didn't finish in the polls in one the placings. I did say in the "Upcoming" post that is fitting this got a reaction even though it didn't get a medal, as that the point of the movie and the Olympics more broadly. It is about determination and the human spirit. It isn't always the best performances that are remembered, it is the moments of sportsmanship and comradery that often endure more. Taron Egerton had a bit of streak of being in biopics there for a bit, he was Eddie Edwards here, Elton John in"Rocketman" not long after this, and in recent times was play the person that brought the game Tetris to the masses in a movie called "Tetris" and is a far more interesting story than it sounds, as it involves cold war Russia and international intrigue. Something that is of note about this movie is that it is produced by Matthew Vaughn, who directed Taron Egerton in the "Kingsman" movie about the same time as this; "Eddie the Eagle" would have been inbetween those first two "Kingsman" movie. But more importantly, Matthew Vaughn was the director/producer of the recently reacted to "Stardust", and the director of "Eddie the Eagle" is Dexter Fletcher who was Robert De Niro's pirate first mate in "Stardust" Bo Derek was a bit of sex bomb during the 70s and 80s and as someone said "Tommy Boy" is probably the movie most people of younger generations would know her from, but "10" with Dudley Moore is probably the movie that defined her career.

Mojo One Thousand

great movie on the spirit of the olympics. christopher walken is a terrific actor, deer hunter is a must watch

VictoryBHG

She may remember him better as Harold Ziddler from Moulin Rouge.

Brian McGovern

Oh "The World's Fastest Indian" is just a lovely, lovely overlooked classic. For any speed enthusiast it's an absolutely essential movie. Cassie would love it I'm sure.

Dryfesands

What a great reaction and uplifting movie. The coolest scene is the Hugh Jackman character (Peary) jumping with "Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy playing. For those of us older, we definitely remember Bo Derek (an American actress who began her career as a child model) (now age 67). She has been involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors. Hugh Jackman is awesome. Taron Egerton is incredible, especially the way he transforms himself into the character he is portraying. He is awesome as Elton John in "Rocketman" (2019). He is stunning in the Apple movie "Black Bird" (2022). By the way, the actor who played the creepy bodyguard in I, Tonya is also in Black Bird.

Clay F

Or Elton and the greatest showman

LDC7080

The English broadcaster you were wondering about, whom you recognized, I'm guessing you recognized from the 'Harry Potter' movies, his name is Jim Broadbent, he played Professor Slughorn

JPDotCom23

It never fails. I get so much more emotional watching a movie along with you than I did in the past…and I’ve seen this movie several times before. Another fantastic reaction which immediately jumps into my top 5 faves. Thank you for making the decision to watch this movie, even though it wasn’t a “medal” winner. By the way…the commentator at the Olympics that supported Eddie was played by legendary British actor Jim Broadbent. You couldn’t place him while watching the movie, but you probably best remember him as Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. He was also in Bridget Jones Diary and Gangs of New York.

Dan M

Not sure if you know but Taron Egerton, who played Eddie, also played Elton John in 'Rocketman'

JPDotCom23

Amen! So well said

Dan M

Wow. After today's opening ceremonies in Paris, I don't think Cassie will look at the Five Rings of We-Hate-Christians the same way again.

JAKH

You excited about Salt Lake 2034?

JPDotCom23

This Olympics week, did not end up being three movies, like the medals. Instead it ended up being five movies, one for each of the Olympic rings. Much more with keeping in the spirit of it all.

Michael G

I haven't seen this film since it came out and I'm glad I rewatched it. It was so enjoyable and feel-good. Just what I needed after this week. Also, the next time you are looking for a true crime miniseries I highly recommend Black Bird (2022) with Taron Edgerton, (Eddie) as well as Paul Walter Hauser, (Shawn from I, Tonya. There's a little serendipity). And I'm sure you may have heard by now, but the reference to the Jamaican bobsled team is a reference to Cool Runnings (1993) which I selfishly believe is the greatest Olympic film!

Blake Evans

I thought Taron Egerton was awesome in "Rocketman" (2019) and "Black Bird" (2022). By the way, the actor who played the creepy bodyguard in I, Tonya is also in Black Bird.

Clay F

INVICTUS (2009) (directed by Eastwood) and MCFARLAND, USA (2015) (Costner) are awesome. Both feel good. I only vaguely remember THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN (2005) but sounds good.

Clay F

- 'To EVERYONE in this Popcorn-In-Bed Patreon Community' who fought for more than just gold-silver-bronze and for Cassie to react to this classic true story... a marvelous story of triumph for the human spirit... THANK YOU VERY MUCH! - - 'To CASSIE' THANK YOU for making a marvelous story... so much more... precious... (a face of pure joy and wonder) - Yep... This was a good one!

Terry Yelmene

I wouldn't have watched this movie if you didn't have this watch-a-long, but I'm really glad you did; I loved it!

Brian's Dog

Oh yay. Just found it there. Thank you.

Chris Thom

Loved seeing this one Cassie really heart warming and tender. I remember seeing Eddie on tv at the time and he really was well recieved here in Canada. I have often looked over at the Calgary Olympic Park when passing through Calgary to go snowboarding in Banff and though of Eddie soaring off those jumps. The ski jumps look impossibly huge. I can't imagine going off of one. As far as Bo Derek goes she was an actress/ model in the 80s but you might have seen her in the 90s comedy Tommy Boy. We do need to get you that awesome 80s ski sweater he is wearing.

Canadianant

Looks like the only place it's streaming without having to rent it is on Max.

Paul Cox

Fantastic reaction Cassie, also glad you’ve had a great time at your parents. This was a 2nd watch for me and it was just as good as the first time I saw it. It also brings back a little nostalgia as I just about remember him being on the news and was a bit of a British hero. He actually said when he saw the film Taron Egerton got him pretty much spot on right down to having all his mannerisms. But seeing as you seem to be watching a few Hugh Jackman movies recently. I’d highly recommend a film called Real Steel its another feel good type film about a farther reconnecting with his son, it also has fighting robots. Don’t worry its not a silly as it sounds as it’s quite a good underrated movie.

Dean Holt

Another British Olympian, Kriss Akabussi, summed up the appeal of Eddie perfectly: "It didn't matter whether he won or lost. While most of us wouldn't have had the guts to even start walking up those stairs, Eddie the Eagle stood on top of the mountain and said....'Geronimo!'"

Clarence Newman

Haven't seen this yet. Debating renting it. I have HULU, HBO, Amazon, Disney, and Netflix. Anyone seen it on one of those recently?

Chris Thom

Cassie, So Zach my better half is off talking to his friend in L.A. who is having sinus surgery on Tuesday. Anyway Zach loves all your reactions. But I loved this inspirational story and you're reaction. You're reactions Cassie make every movie better. Eddie didn't care what he placed. It was just being there and doing something that no one else thought he could do. The Olympics changed the rules after this and came up with the Eddie The Eagle rule. So yeah no spoilers At the end there I was thinking please don't cry Cassie your going to make me cry. I love feel good movies. Hugh Jackman, we having being seen a lot of him lately on Friday and today. He is good in just about everything he does. Cassie, in the email I sent to u on Fri. I meant to put a u not an I right before the first link to the YouTube account it should have been know how much u love kids. I sent u the Instagram account because it deals with two things u love. Watching kids grow up and true love. ❤️ Which that account has plenty of. Again just a beautiful reaction Cass. Of course, watching u anyone would feel good. 🍿🥇

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

I just finished, and I have to say, what a reaction. I had a hunch it will be good, but this exceeded my expectations. It felt like watching Cassie went through an emotional roller coaster. This may be my favorite reaction so far in 2024. I realize it may be a while before we get more sports movie reactions, but here are some excellent ones that I highly recommend: THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN (2005) INVICTUS (2009) MCFARLAND, USA (2015)

Gábor Árki

Great movie and a great reaction. After this, I think Cassie’s ready for “The World’s Fastest Indian.” Nope, it’s not the Olympics. But it is the true story of an underdog striving to do what they say can’t be done and it is inspirational. And joyous. PS: The last ski jump WAS NOT 90 feet. It was 90 meters, or almost THREE HUNDRED feet. Next time you’re in a city, go in the tallest building you can find, take the elevator to the 25th floor and look out the window. That’s approximately how high he was. I used to work on the 16th floor of an office building. I can’t imagine jumping from a platform that started that high, much less nine floors higher.

Just Plain Bob

His appearance makes it bigger because he is HUGE ACKMAN!

2-Can

Thanks for doing this watch along , it was a lot of fun. Now, Star Trek time ! LOL

Brad Enervold

I remember it too. I was 12 at the time, but it was such a powerful news story that it's stayed with me all these years. Yes the film over dramatised certain aspects. However the origins of Eddie's dream and his steadfast determination to prove his critics wrong is such a wonderful and truly very British story. To anyone of a certain age he's still an icon of sport. I'm glad this film exists to cement his legacy with younger generations.

Brett Richey

I just finished and I’m ready to tryout for the Olympic team as at 47 years old 🙌🤣

Wes

He was everywhere for a short while.

James UK

Yeah, I remember him being on the news, I think he did something on Blue Peter but I could be wrong. But I know he was on a few tv shows.

Dean Holt

Never knew I needed to see Hugh Jackman driving a Yellow mini van lol

LittleGalaxyBoy

Hope you enjoy it.

Dean Holt

There’s a radio or TV report in the film that mentions the Jamaican bobsleigh team. But as a Brit I remember watching him being in the news, he was also on a few tv shows and he kinda became a bit or a celebrity.

Dean Holt

I remember this in real time. Eddie the Eagle became quite the hero over here! Of course the obvious criticism, by some, was that we were celebrating mediocrity, but that misses the point.

James UK

Love this movie and the performances of Taron and Hugh. I vividly remember watching the Eagle soar in Calgary and how the whole city got behind him and the Jamaican Bobsled team. It was such a fun, low-key, relaxed, and unpretentious Games. One big party, usually culminating at Olympic Plaza.

Doug Fisher

Very nice of Cassie to make this full react available at my lower tier. I assume she doesn't plan to make a YT edit for this movie.

Joe

You hit the nail on the head Cassie. This is such a feel good movie, a real win for underdogs. Eddie’s passion and never quit attitude are really inspiring. It’s nice to see Hugh Jackman in a more light hearted role (but he will forever be Logan to me). This is a nice way to close out the PIB version of the Summer Olympics (with a movie about the Winter Olympics 😂). Safe travels home! Hope you made some forever memories during your time in Canada.

Dan M

I wonder how long before they make a movie on Eric the Eel from the 2000 Olympiad. That might be a bit tougher considering he had 1 event and probably less drama to get there.

Brian McGovern

What a wonderful welcome home from my vacation. I'm so glad this also got a reaction. Eddie might not have had what it takes to be a champion, but he certainly had the heart and spirit of one. In an interview he said the movie is about 80% accurate. Fun fact, despite finishing last in both events he competed, he did held the British ski jumping record from 1988 to 2001.

Gábor Árki

Love this movie, also adore Taron and Hugh!

Tinker

Same year as the Cool Running guys also representing. This film makes a good double with that still classic feelgood story.

Brett Richey

My first time too. Excited!

Wes

Taron and Hugh were so great in this. The Eagle and The Wolverine. 😁
