I, Tonya (2017) - Full Reaction

Wow wow how was this all real? What a crazy story! i've been reading up on this and it's all so messy and sad! I'm proud of her, someone needs to be. I really loved the way they told this story through half documentary, flashbacks etc. The whole cast did incredible, Margot Robbie and AJ especially! ps-i got the figure skaters names wrong in my outro. Michelle Kwan, Kristy Yamaguchi!

Loved the movie, but something I've always wondered about in trying to determine the truth from the fiction, so maybe someone out there can help me out. When Tonya said she'd be willing to do 18 months in prison if she could still skate -- why didn't her lawyer make that plea agreement with the DA? And prosecutor would boast that he got her into prison. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure a judge doesn't have the authority to ban someone from skating. The skating commission (or whatever they're called could,) but not a judge. If a judge did anyway, Tonya could easily appeal and win.
Also, couldn't she have gotten some skating job at the Ice Capades or some other skating show, that was not a competitive thing. She was a huge name. Or even teaching/coaching skating? The court can't stop that.
Anyway, loved the movie, but there was always something fishy about that ending. Help me out, folks.

I remember when this happened I was a young adult Tanya is just a year older than me. She was a fantastic skater, but even I as a dude knew she was getting a raw deal, cause she wasn't a ice princess with rich parents etc like most were. She was rough but she skated her heart out and I felt that she was being judged on her personal life more than her skating, which I'm glad this film shows that. I mean its not cool to judge someone on something they have zero control over like what type of family your born into, and not fairly judged and what you can control like how great of a skater she was even through all the hardships and abuse. I always felt bad for her and always though they did her dirty. Even before the "incident" and when that happened I remember a friend saying I think she was behind it and I remember asking him what would she gain from it? Seriously way to big of a risk for her to be behind it and honestly she didn't need to cheat, everyone knew that. She was never going to win a gold medal because everyone knew how the judges judged her. They were never going to put a gold medal on her. So no point in it. Once the story broke of the ex husband and "body guard" that made total sense. I thought at the time it was them trying to sabotage Tonya by trying to make her look guilty of being involved etc. Its a sad story but glad to hear she's good. Just shows how tough she really is.

The little girl who plays young Tonya is the same girl who played young Captain Marvel, and she's equally as fantastic in Gifted, with Chris Evans. That's an underrated movie.

One of the more memorable movies from last decade. I don't know if they play it a lot on Cable or HBO...but when they do I think it'll become a classic. It has that potential.

Thank you soooo much for reacting to this! Its one of my all time favorite movies. It's criminally under appreciated! Which is nuts to me considering it stars Margot Robbie and Sabastien Stan. Ive shown it to so many friends and family and they all are blown away by how much they enjoy it. And seeing from the comments, a lot of your followers feel the same. Right before it came out I saw a clip of that scene where shes saying "Send me to jail so I can still skate." And that quick clip alone made me want to see it so bad! Its so heartbreaking. Also, I love the MCU. And I didnt realize Jeff Galooly was actually Bucky Barnes till like the 10th time I watched it haha!

I don't think Katarina Witt was intimidated by anything or anyone. btw, I once saw her walking right toward me in NYC wearing designer jeans and a thick fall sweater. I nearly walked into a streetlight pole. I recovered by doing a quick moonwalk — like nearly hitting the pole and then moonwalking was my intent all along. She saw the whole thing and I got a smile, but she kept walking. So yes, we were practically dating. 🤣

This film is a great example of finding the Humor in Tragedy. The humor was not hard to find though. The story was so Insane and with so many (to borrow from the film)… “Boobs” as characters, the humor was inherent. I think trying to tell this “True” story in a serious way, would not have worked at all. Sometimes laughter is a necessity in the darkest of times.
A Perfect Soundtrack can also help. A great song can allow you to step out of a bad situation and see the light at the end of a tunnel. This film, without these Fun Rock and Pop songs, would have been one of the most depressing films. I don’t know who’s idea it was to include all these songs, but it was a Terrific one. It’s a Sad, but Fun Re-Watchable Story, in large part because of it’s soundtrack.
Ending the film with “The Passenger,” by Iggy Pop, performed by Siouxsie and the Banshees, playing over Tonya’s 1991 Nationals skate, was Perfect as well.
“I am a passenger
And I ride, and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, they're bright in a hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight”
The Song lifts you back up, and says, we are all Passengers in Life. You don’t know what Hardships or Hells that you’ll find around any turn, but what you can count on is the Bright Beautiful Stars. They’re always there. So just ride and ride and ride and ride, and never forget to look up. There’s always Star Lights, and they’re all Yours and Mine.
I love that Nationals skate routine. The look on Tonya’s face. She knew she was nailing it, and couldn’t control her happiness. Knowing that that might have been the happiest moment in her life, at that point, and most likely was for a very long time. Knowing what she had gone through in her life, to get to that moment. It’s hard to not smile and not have tears in my eyes.
—
By now, we will never know the “Truth.” Besides…
“There is no such thing as Truth… Everyone has their own Truth.”
Tonya Harding deserves her own Truth, and that’s what this film is. I don’t know Tonya, so I got no place to cast any judgment on her. She tells a pretty entertaining and emotional story, that does no harm to anyone. After all these years of being the “Punchline,” I’m inclined to believe her. She’s been hated long enough, in my opinion.
(and Nancy Kerrigan DID look like she stepped in Poo… Just saying ;-)
PS: There’s a great ESPN 30 for 30 documentary called, The Price of Gold (2014), about this incident. It’s worth checking out. I believe it’s available for free on AppleTV.

As I’m watching this movie along with you, I’m reminded so many times of why I’m such a huge fan of your channel and your content. I think I was as emotional about your reactions to this story as I was about the story itself. I’ve seen this movie a few times before tonight, but I think I saw more tonight as I watched along with you, if that makes any sense at all. Anyway…Margot Robbie is amazing, I didn’t give Sebastian Stan enough credit for his performance in this movie, …and I wonder if Allison Janney had trouble looking at herself in the mirror after her incredible re-enactment of a soulless, loveless, heartless mother.

Wow. Just watched this all the way through again for the first since it came out and...wow. Way more heartbreaking than I remember. The fun soundtrack, pithy dialogue, and tongue in cheek tone disguise that a bit...but yeah...it's sad. We need to do better by our working classes. That's my overriding thought throughout. Great movie though. So curious if she was ever able to skate again in traveling shows, or 'such-and-such On Ice' type of things. Maybe she could coach?

Great reaction Cassie!
I remember when this story broke. It was everywhere showing Nancy sitting on the floor crying. I remember the investigation unfolding and then Jeff was linked to it and there was always speculation about how much Tonya really knew. Those news breaks that they showed was real footage.
I had never seen this movie before and it did remind me that there were other men involved, but again the speculation of whether Tonya planned it with Jeff or not was always there.
I didn't know, or didn't remember that Tonya grew up like that and I can't begin to imagine how horrifying it was,

When all this was going on, I remember the media treated Tonya like crap. It was insane. Of course my gf doesn't remember this at all. I have flashes of it here and there. I just remember the nonstop media coverage.
What did Caitlin Clark say? That women can be just as competitive as men, that they talk trash and bump heads. I will admit it seemed like Tonja got the raw deal. Today it doesn't matter were you came from. Back in the 90's it was a different story.
Eva was crying right along with you on this Cassie. she said. "Watching movies with Cassie makes every movie better" she loves all your outros where you sum up your feelings on the movie. However she really loved this one especially. As soon as she started crying her husky Amaru came up and put his head in her lap. Our pets can emotionally connect with us.
I think my gf's respect for you went through the roof on this one. Like you she hates it when people are mean to each other. As a pediatric nurse she is trained to watch for signs of child abuse. She absolutely hates to see children get emotionally and verbally abused. You two seem to be on the same page throughout the movie. While I found humor at the pure stupidity of the criminals.
Well much ❤️ to you Cassie for this one and to Ben and the rest of your family. As always you are always in our 🙏

Scott Hamilton makes figure skating so much more exciting to watch. His commentary is always entertaining. Michelle Yamaguchi lol - I love them both! Michelle Kwan was my favorite figure skater and I was so devastated when she missed out on the gold twice. I remember watching this Tonya & Nancy drama unfold. As part of your deep dive, you should checkout the article: “A Lost Documentary of Tonya Harding Made Before the Nancy Kerrigan Scandal …” by Bennett Campbell Ferguson. She interviewed filmmaker Sandra Luckow about her documentary “Sharp Edges” that followed Tonya in her first National Skating competition in 1986. Interesting read - and I agree with Luckow about Tonya. Her documentary is definitely worth a watch!

This was my first time watching and it was about ten fucking times better than I thought it would be. I assumed this would be some standard historical drama. The actress who played the mother did the best job of playing a cunt in a motion picture that I've ever seen. Oscar deserved. I loved how washed out the cinematography was and I loved how the soundtrack was just shitty classic rock songs from the era. Margot Robbie was unrecognisable, excellent acting all around. Thanks Cassie fans for forcing her to watch this thing.

I want to believe that she had no intention of physically harming Nancy Kerrigan, and had no part in planning the attack. She was so talented and had no reason to think she needed to “take out” her competition. But the lines between the truth and fabrication became so blurred during the investigation, and even afterwards, that its hard to totally accept that she was 100% innocent.

No doubt, I just see Wolf of Wall Street as an opportunity for her to fall into a typecast as a pretty blonde woman with a little acting ability and end up doing nothing of substance in b-movies her entire career. Her starring role after that ends up being Suicide Squad which is a disaster, and she follows it with this and she's suddenly a mega star.

I always felt for her. She got treated like the girl from the wrong side of the tracks for so long, and the media coverage reflected that even before any of this happened. Granted...she and her boyfriend f'd up big time. But she was definitely super talented and had a lot of pure power when she skated. Hope she was able to find happiness (and avoid any shady criminal situations) in the future.

A quick correction to my original post. I said I was dubious that Tonya was barred from competing by the court system. I’ve since done some research on the issue and discovered that she was barred from competition by her plea agreement, not the skating governing bodies. However, as the DA pointed out, that was part of her plea agreement. She NEVER expressed a desire to back out of the agreement over the skating ban. Had she actually said what was depicted in the film, the judge would’ve instructed the DA and defense counsel to work out a new deal or schedule a trial date. So, I was wrong, but the movie was deliberately misleading on this point.

But that Shawn dude was creepy, knowing that he was even associated with her made her look bad. But some of the other stuff they touch base on, 80s Portland was a different time. If you were from there and lower income you needed to be a bit more roughneck.

I don't know how much of this happened, but I do remember reading about her being attacked by her brother and abused by her mother. I remember someone saying that her mother would make her stay on the ice until she wet herself more than once. If she went through half of this, that's very sad. This reminded me of a few movies you should watch. 1. Star 80, 2. Monster (2003), and I just watched this on Netflix: 3. An American Crime (2007), all these are true stories.

This movie has some great acting in it, especially from all the 4 main characters ("Tonya", "Jeff", "LaVona", and "Shawn"). The movie also has a pretty fair soundtrack as well. And, I think it owes the Will Ferrell movie "Blades of Glory" some thanks for breaking ground on some of the special effects that were used for the skating scenes.
Allison Janney won an Oscar for her performance, and I think it was well deserved. She is on my list of actors (along with the likes of John Goodman), that are always great in their roles regardless of the quality of the final product.
Even "Young Tonya" Mckenna Grace, who is a great little actor, was awesome in this - the one that was shooting rabbits. She had a run of playing "young [insert character here]" there for a bit, as she also played a younger version of Brie Larson's titular "Captain Marvel" in the MCU, and on the channel we have seen her as a Ghostbuster in "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" as "Phoebe Spangler", "Egon's" grand-daughter.
This is a sympathic re-telling of Tonya Harding story, so I don't know how involved she actually was in the crime. But even if only some of the story of her home life or relationship with Jeff Gillooly is true, it certainly is a tragic story of someone that was unfortunately very much a product of her circumstances. It certainly made the news even where I am from (outside the US).

I enjoy this movie but it is a bit of a downer. The “Your Wrong About” podcast did a really good deep dive on the real story. I think the movie’s conclusion that there is no truth is probably accurate - true crime peeps tend to get lost in the details.
If you’ve never seen Blades of Glory it deserves a reaction. It came out years before I, Tonya but it is kind of the parody version.

I remember following this story as it unfolded in the news. I couldn’t believe a professional athlete would resort to such lengths and physically harm a competitor to further their career. It was akin to a middle school bully attacking another student just to get their way. Its just a matter of who the actual bully is in this case. Tonya’s level of involvement in the attack is still up in the air, but either way its a tragic story for both her and Nancy Kerrigan.
Margot Robbie and Allison Janney were phenomenal in their roles, both very deserving of the award nominations and wins they both got.

Essentially a first watch for me. I liked it. I enjoyed/appreciated your reaction. I could tell you recognized C.J. instantly. I, Tonya is a sports mockumentary black comedy film (with a great soundtrack) but is understandably a crying movie. What a bad feeling to see abuse -- abused by her mother, abused by her boyfriend/husband, treated unfairly by the judges, etc.
I remember the media narrative: Nancy Kerrigan was the pretty, poised, innocent victim. Tonya was the rough-around-the-edges assailant from the wrong side of the tracks. Tonya was a punch line.
I agree that Margot Robbie was awesome. She transformed herself into Tonya. The girl who played the young Tonya is good -- she was great as a kid in the Mad Men TV series. Figure skating is awesome to watch -- incredible athletic skills combined with grace. I remember Kristi Yamaguchi.

I'm a year older than Tonya Harding and have a vivid memory of the assault on Nancy Kerrigan and the subsequent unfolding of the story surrounding it. As movies go, this was entertaining – but very selective in the facts it presents and frequently downright inaccurate. It definitely appears to be Tonya’s version of events.
For one thing, I remember that Tonya’s story regarding her knowledge and involvement changed greatly at the time (and in the thirty years since then). As new facts came to light, her story evolved to incorporate or match the new information.
In fact, a few years ago (around 2018), she admitted that she knew Gillooly and Eckardt planned to assault one of her fellow competitors. I believe she has since recanted this confession. Authorities at the time stated that she was intimately involved in planning the attack and that it was only because she accepted a plea deal to testify against the others that she was only charged with impeding the investigation and not the attack itself.
One key fact that the movie omitted completely is that the original plan was to murder Kerrigan. Thankfully, the conspirators decided that crippling her would be good enough. And, of course, they failed at even that.
There are also aspects of Tonya’s version of events that simply don’t make sense but were given short shrift in the film. For instance, the note that she wrote detailing Kerrigan’s training schedule and location. She has, at least at times, denied writing the note, saying it’s not her handwriting. Handwriting analysts say it is. And, the woman she spoke to that day on the phone confirmed the content of the note and that it was Tonya that called her. Why, if there was a benign explanation for the note, did she lie about placing the call and writing the note? And who would possibly believe it had to do with the delivery of a letter?
It's a well documented fact that her mother abused Tonya growing up. I don’t believe that Gillooly was ever charged with abusing her, but I also believe that was part of their abuse cycle (that is, after calling authorities, she would recant, feeling sorry for him and telling herself it wouldn’t happen again). At any rate, it appears to me that he almost certainly abused Tonya.
It’s also worth noting that Tonya was charged with domestic violence after attacking a different boyfriend after breaking up with Gillooly. I’m not excusing Gillooly’s treatment of her, simply pointing out that she wasn’t an angel herself.
She was also charged with assault when she attacked a fellow female motorist with a baseball bat, presumably as part of a traffic altercation. I’m fairly certain she’s been arrested several other times for similar incidents, but abusing the boyfriend and assaulting the motorist are the ones I remember. Another ex-boyfriend stated that he broke up with her because she was verbally abusive and spoke in a demeaning manner to others, as well. So, Tonya was not exactly a paragon of virtue.
Regarding the broken shoelace at the Olympics, her coach actually cited that as an example of how poorly Tonya prepared for those Olympics. She said that it was standard for skaters to bring multiple pairs of laces for just such an eventuality. She also said that Tonya barely prepared for the Olympics, was out of shape and drank heavily during preparation.
All that said, I don’t think there’s any doubt that the governing body(s) of figure skating DID NOT like having Tonya Harding as a representative. It really is a shame that they felt that way and even more of a shame that she seemed to validate their feelings by her own behavior, because she was an incredible skater.
I find it dubious that the court denied her the right to ever skate again. It is far more likely that the governing body(s) of skating imposed that punishment. Along those same lines, Cassie seemed to believe that Tonya was sent to prison for three years. She never served a day. The judge issued a suspended sentence, meaning that she would only have to serve time if she violated the terms of her probation.
Finally (and I’m sorry to have rambled so long), Shawn Eckardt really was as weird as depicted in the film. I remember my family and I watching interviews with him on tv and it honestly seemed like an SNL skit was taking place. I don’t know if he was mentally ill or just a really bad liar, but he made those claims and his behavior was bizarre.

Cassie, I was in 8th grade when all this was going on. I remember the coverage being non stop. I even used to own a retractable paton my friends and I use to call it the Nancy Kerrigan. I ended up selling it. For $80 more than likely to buy pot. I was bad kid back then. I remember the story being on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
If the Simpsons reenacts it you know it was big.
I a huge Margot Robbie fan. Just because she is really good friends with The Tate family. Debra Tate (Sharon sister) gave Robbie a pair of Sharon's earrings and her perfume. So we can't wait to watch this with you. Cassie Popcorn.

You are cranking out the content. I have watched the first few minutes of this movie before. Been looking forward to doing an actual full watch along with your reaction. The movie gets rave reviews.
