So obviously we gotta get “Coneheads” on this channel now, right? A 90s classic with tons of great cameos led by Canadian great Dan Aykroyd.

Mark Daniels

True enough about why this win was so special - though cannot forget that national morale in the US was at such a low point given the end of the Vietnam War, the oil crisis, runaway inflation, the Iranian hostage crisis (and failed rescue attempt), etc. That these kids could step up and beat the best in the world started to snap us out of that. Also remember that by ‘98 the Soviet Union had fully collapsed and their national hockey program with it. The NHL helped fund it for a while as players were starting to join the NHL. But as you note, they have not been able to match the years of the Red Army teams.

Mystery Alaskaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Jason Murawski

Ohhhh. Yeah you know what. After watching this reaction I can see the comparison lol

It’s important to remember that this was an extremely unfair tournament. The best Canadian and American players couldn’t play because they were pros in the NHL. Or WHL. But the Soviets played together as a team all the time. So in a true best on best tournament the results would be VERY different. The Summit 72 series for example was the best of Canada in the NhL vs the Russian team. Canada won. It wasn’t until 1998 that the Olympics and NHL agreed to let the best players complete. Since then, whenever it’s best on best, Canada tends to win gold except 2006 & that first year in ‘98. With 2010 being on the of best gold medal games of all time. That’s what made this win so crazy. The soviets essentially lost to a bunch of young players who had barely played together and were far from the best America had to offer. The Russians meanwhile, got to ice their best players which why they dominated this era of Olympic competition. It wasn’t until the Olympics & NHL came to an agreement that it became a true best on best tournament in ‘98 & since then the Russians haven’t won gold once.

I think she's seen that. She's brought it up a few times in regards to team-up/sports movies.

Chris Thom

You should watch the actual game. Craig the goalie stood on his head , it was crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlfUdKgHwR8

Great Movie. Remember the Titans is another great sports movie I think you would like.

Eddie Perkins

At the end there I kept waiting for them to do the flying V thing. Lol. Whoops wrong movie.

This is a great movie. I don't really follow Ice Hockey, but when I was a teenager in the 90 I really loved the "Mighty Ducks"-trilogy... I remember seeing a documentary about the soviet team and their very dedicated training methods which made them both respected and feared... They were unbeatable at the time. The 80s movie "Youngblood" is really cool... it stars Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Cynthia Gibb and the fantastic Ed Lauter... Maybe not the most correct sportsmovie, but fun, entertaining and a killer soundtrack...

Jens Kristensen

I'm not American, but even I'd be hard pressed to put another moment in sporting history above this one. It's not called "The Miracle" for nothing. These guys got rubber gloved 10-3 by this same Soviet team just days before the Olympics started, but when it mattered the most, they did this. Just an impossible feat. Now Cassie needs to watch Eddie The Eagle so she can see the other side of the coin - slightly different result, exactly the same joy and fulfilment of an Olympic dream. I know, Cassie, we keep plugging The Bespectacled One, but it's you we're looking out for. You (and Carly) will LOVE it!

Clarence Newman

My only quibble with this movie is that Ken Morrow is shown as clean-shaven in the film. He was the only player on the team allowed to have a beard (b/c he showed up to the first camp with it) while everyone else had to shave. He went from the Olympics to joining the New York Islanders that year and proceeded to win the next four Stanley Cups in a row. A charmed hockey life.

I am pretty sure that the miracle on ice was the first appearance of the iconic U-S-A, U-S-A chant.

SyrupMcWaffle

This is a super inspirational sports movie, but this is based on a real team and game from the 1980 winter Olympics, while Rocky is a purely fictional story (though Rocky does take some inspiration from some real life boxers and events). This is more like the hockey version of Cinderella Man, while The Natural is like the Rocky of baseball movies. If that makes sense 😂

Stranger2Reality

Something of note for you guys, all the audio commentary you hear in this movie from the games played in the Olympics was the real life audio from the TV broadcasts done by the legendary Al Michaels. His "do you believe in miracles?!" call at the end of the game against the Soviets is arguably the most famous line in sports broadcasting history, and of course is where this movie gets its name from, as this game became known as "The Miracle on Ice" because of that call. This and Chariots of Fire are probably the best inspirational Olympics movies. Munich is a great movie, but is pretty much the polar opposite of this.

Stranger2Reality

One of America's greatest sports moments ever, if not the best. This moment lifted Americans to feel proud of the country again, after 15 or so years of negative sentiment. Also, this is where the "USA" chant started

Ctyre335

Best part of this movie is how accurate is to the real life events. There’s a very good HBO documentary about it that’s worth watching. Munich is going to be such a tough watch. I’m curious to see how you handle it. Another true story that tells a vastly different story compared to this.

Jose Deleon

As I understand it, a lot of the players in the movie were just real hockey players, not actors at all.

John Neiberger

I'll watch later tonight, love me some Kurt USA! USA! USA!

Celeste McAllister

In real life, one of the Russian players on the Soviet team named Viacheslav “Slava” Fetisov later became a part of the “Russian Five” of the Detroit Red Wings that claimed 4 Stanley Cups.

Anthony Carlson

Haven't watched this film but judging off that picture is this like the Rocky of Ice Hockey films? Also another great, cult classic Ice Hockey film I highly recommend is Slap Shot (1977) a movie that featured a character who inspired Wolverine's appearance, according to comic book artist John Byrne who based Wolverine's look and personality after this said character.
