[YT Edit] The Prestige (2006)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "The Prestige" that will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] The Prestige (2006)

Comments

There are so many of his films that are amazing and worth watching. We could also recommend The Machinist, The Fighter and American Psycho. I also love Harsh Times and Equilibrium but those are probably more niche.

Oisin Clissmann

I wish that she would have watched that first.

ArsTropica

I liked Dunkirk better on the second watch

Clay F

Tesla was the inventor that rivaled Edison.

Ephram

What up

Ephram

I would like to see Oppenheimer. I heard it was good.

Eddie Perkins

There was an Edward Norton magician movie that came out at the same time.

Chris Thom

Feel like the twist was that there was no twist. It was exactly what it looked like.

Chris Thom

Nice. Mine is pretty much the same. But might swap Inception for Dunkirk.

Chris Thom

Based on my tastes, my ranking (favorite) of Nolan stuff (all good) that I have watched: 1. Oppenheimer 2. Dark Knight trilogy (all 3 collectively) 3. Dunkirk 4. The Prestige 5. Memento 6. Inception

Clay F

That was really good, but it was not what I thought it would be at all. I love movies with great twists. I feel like I need to watch it again.

Eddie Perkins

I can't believe I've never seen this movie before. Everybody is in it! Maybe I confused it with a different movie. I stopped watching this reaction just before what is presumably the climax. Now, I need to go watch the full movie.

Stephen Dias

He was also in a couple of Paul Thomas Anderson's

mikethemotormouth

It is really fun to re-watch this movie and look to spot which twin was Alfred and which twin was Fallon. Christian Bale basically played 4 characters in this movie. Each one played slightly differently.

Nick Parker

I feel like this movie is often overlooked when people talk about films with the greatest twist endings, alongside stuff like The Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects. I think it might be because this movie has a series of twists all right at the end, and some are relatively subtle, rather than the film hitting you over the head with what they are. As a result, I don't think audiences initially walked away from this really grasping what the twists were the way they did with those other movies, but this one deserves to be included right along with them. I actually think the twists much better recontextualize the film on subsequent viewings than the twists in those other films do, and this makes for a richer viewing experience.

Cassie, if Christian Bale is an automatic watch, as you said, I would recommend HOSTILES next time you want to do a western or RESCUE DAWN if you're up for a true story war (Vietnam) movie. Also in the war (WWII) category, EMPIRE OF THE SUN features a pre-adolescent Christian Bale and is quite good.

Above Average Dave

Also of note in this movie, the magician that both Bale and Jackman are working for at the beginning was Ricky Jay, one of the most talented magicians alive at the time, who also starred in a bunch of films (and was a regular in David Mamet films). Unfortunately Ricky Jay passed away in 2018, but he's got some amazing tricks you can see him perform on YouTube if you search for his name.

Stranger2Reality

Same.

Stan the Man

Love this movie, but also like The Illusionist. Hopefully Cassie will find herself getting to watch that one someday as well.

Dave Hill

Probably the last Nolan release I actually liked

Jonathan Fearby

I was really hoping after watching TNG Cassie would have recognized Daniel Davis/ Professor Moriarty.

Michael Jennings

I don’t think you did. This was picked from a moderator poll of two choices apiece from her 4 moderators.

Cole Jennett

Did I hear I correctly and say this was picked from movies from 2007? Because this came out in 2006. I’m not much of a Nolan fan but I do think this is his best film. When he sticks to STORY and narrative he does ok. But he’s a dreadful action director. His last two Batman films are a mess. But The Prestige is really good and fun. Angier’s final monologue about the “look on their faces” is great.

Stan the Man

It's interesting to compare the worldviews of "The Prestige" and "Interstellar." In "The Prestige," Angier articulates a purely materialist, nihilistic perspective: "The audience knows the truth. The world is simple, miserable, solid all the way through." In "Interstellar," Dr. Brand argues that love points to a transcendent reality and purpose: "Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space...It has to mean something." I wonder if this contrast between Angier and Dr. Brand represents a shift in Christopher Nolan's own perspective on the world between 2006 and 2014.

David Woodbridge

Oh geez, I forgot he was in that. I thought she was getting confused about who David Bowie was

Jeff Rogers

Michael Caine

Clayton David-Thomas

I always get the two confused. My favorite was the profanity-laced tirade that was unleashed when a sloth was introduced on set.

Happy Hanukkah

That's not what I meant, she mentioned somebody in The prestige that was in Miss congeniality and I don't know who that is.

Jeff Rogers

Unsurprisingly, she's seen it. https://letterboxd.com/popcorn_in_bed/films/by/name/ [ADDED: Roger that, Jeff. Leaving this comment up for those unfamiliar with Cassie's list of watched movies, or unaware that the link changed.]

Happy Hanukkah

And my next magic trick will be the greatest of all: I shall make Hugh Jackman disappear! He will be in plain sight, but you won't even know he's there! :-) :-) :-)

Happy Hanukkah

18:01 The late great David Robert Jones aka David Bowie

mikethemotormouth

Good job figuring stuff out! This one is tricky. And yes Nikola Tesla was a real person. One of the pioneers of early electricity and a rival of Thomas Edison. He was a genius but also very eccentric and secretive so a lot of conspiracy theories are about him which makes him perfect for this kind of role. Also the actor who played Tesla is an actor you have seen before. He is famous classic rock and roll star David Bowie, but you have probably seen him as Jareth the Goblin king from the movie Labyrinth.

SyrupMcWaffle

Saw it when I was like 14 and it's been blowing my mind ever since. Will forever be one of my favorite films

Brogan

Miss congeniality?

Jeff Rogers

1:17 Maybe it's just me but something about your accent made me feel the need to clarify. Christian Bale not Kristen Bell

mikethemotormouth

This, Dark Knight and Inception are constantly battling in my head for #1 Nolan film though Insomnia is definitely still the most underrated

mikethemotormouth

Keep doing moderator picks. All of the ones that they picked that have seen are fantastic

Nick Parker

This movie really benefits from a second watch, there are so many clues and hints to the twist through out. In the very beginning Borden says "we were two young men at the beginning of our careers never intending to hurt anyone..." And you think he's talking about himself and Angier, but really he's talking about himself and his brother.

Clayton David-Thomas

I thought you were on vacation this week? We (Gf and I) weren't planning on seeing you till next week. We will be in Canada (BC) by tomorrow night. My friend up north who has two cats that are worth $135,000 (total amount) 🙄

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Great, great film. One of Nolan's best

Bill Maurer

Hey, Cassie! I watched your full-length reaction, and I must say I'm impressed with how quickly you shook off the mind-bending twists and figured things out! 👍

Phil Stubblefield

Abracadabra... Absolutely love this movie, in the running for Nolan's best film, IMO.
