Pink Panther (1963) - Full Reaction

Comments

If you want to see the guy who played the sax on the theme, it was Plas Johnson and he recorded it with a bunch of musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. Here's a vid...https://youtube.com/watch?v=jBupII3LH_Q

Bert Towle

Ronin came in second which was directed by critically acclaimed director John Frakenheimer. I vote that she watches that. All of us loved Cassie's reaction to this it was hilarious. Very funny. All four of us had a blast watching her this week. The two new people to her channel both loved her. Couldn't say enough good things about her. We are heading to Calgary in the morning then to Banff National Park and Moraine Lake. We are staying in downtown Calgary never been there before. My friend suggested the Calgary Zoo. But the gf and I have been warned a couple of times about PDA so we will have to see about that.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Watching this in it's entirety now for the first time I see why I tried MANY times to watch this movie as a kid and gave up every time. If one were to divide it into four parts the second part REALLY got me lost about what exactly the plot is, even as an adult, and The Pink Panther pretty much disappears, but then the third part is exceedingly funny and the forth brings it all together again and reminds you why you're invested.

YodatheHobbit

The Great Race is a really fun film. Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood are perfectly cast, but it's Jack Lemmon, in two polar opposite roles, who steals the show. Cassie would love it.

Clarence Newman

REVENGE is worse, but still good.

Stick Figure Studios

A Shot in the Dark is much funnier. OF all the Pink Panther movies I thought this is the worst.

John

The Pink Panther is a mess of a movie that can't decide if it's romantic comedy, sophisticated comedy, slapstick comedy, or a farce. Each scene is almost a different genre. But if you watch some of the sequels, especially Return of the Pink Panther or The Pink Panther Strikes Back, they have settled into silly slapstick and it works better.

PaulChristopher

That's interesting because I love Peter Sellers and don't find THE GREAT RACE particularly funny.

Stick Figure Studios

My cousins made me watch this movie many times as a kid - they loved it, I did not. I thought it would be interesting to re-watch it as an adult. And yeah - I still don't like it. I just don't think Peter Sellers was funny - my loss, I suppose. If you're gonna watch Blake Edwards, I'd go with Victor Victoria, Breakfast At Tiffany's, or especially The Great Race (my personal favorite).

Walter

What an unexpected treat this was, can agree with the guys above ^ that the later movies get better but the first still has its charm. This movie might have been the start of my fave Peter Sellers performances along with Dr Strangelove and Being There.

D4RK

The whole scene that takes place in the *REDACTED* with Clouseau holding the giant *REDACTED* is just hysterical.

Stick Figure Studios

Birdie num-num?

Stick Figure Studios

Sellers made a lot of lousy movies unfortunately, but he was brilliant. Definitely check out some more of his work. I'd recommend the other Pink Panther films, THE PARTY, DR. STRANGELOVE, BEING THERE and MURDER BU DEATH (also with Niven).

Stick Figure Studios

As a kid I first knew Niven from CANDLESHOE. He's also great in MURDER BY DEATH and BEDTIME STORY (a.k.a. the original DIRTy ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS).

Stick Figure Studios

And both have used the slogan "It is my business to know things."

Stick Figure Studios

Good Sharkey, Colonel God. We were just talking about you.

Stick Figure Studios

I would say the next three films (not including the one with Alan Arkin) are better. REVENGE is the only one made while Sellers was still alive that is arguably worse than this one.

Stick Figure Studios

There's actually quite an involved story about how A Shot In The Dark became part of the Pink Panther series (though it doesn't actually involve the Pink Panther at all!): we'll save that for when you hopefully watch it, Cassie. "TUCKER!!!"😂

Chris Clarke

Colonel Sharkey?🙂

Chris Clarke

So glad you watched this! Be advised that the next two films in the series are significantly better, and hilarious viewing. This is also the first time I've actually watched your reaction in concert with my own copy of a film! A Shot In The Dark is the next one, and it's a murder mystery comedy!

Chris Clarke

After some cool introductory graphics, BATMAN FOREVER essentially resorts to the standard opening credit method for the 80s and 90s: namely, to just paste them over top of the beginning of the actual movie (usually situated in the lower corner of the frame so as not to draw attention to them). I've never liked that. It always struck me as lazy. I'd rather they just have no opening credits at all then do that.

Stick Figure Studios

Comedy/caper

Stick Figure Studios

Was watching Batman Forever the other day and the opening credits really were kind of jarring. Had the feel of an old tv show...right in the middle of all this heightened cinematic action.

Chris Thom

I've never seen any of these. I think there were a few sequels? Not even sure what the genre is.

Chris Thom

"These old movies and their opening credits." Movies back then were contractually obligated to have the credits at the beginning of the picture (and always closed with a simple "The End" title card). What makes movies like James Bond or Pink Panther special was that they did something original and memorable with the credits besides just putting names in the screen with musical accompaniment. Nowadays opening credits are an anachronism as movies rarely have them (that started to change in the 1970s; one of the first franchises to feature no opening credits were actually the Star Wars movies and George Lucas had to pay thousands of extra dollars to do that). I actually miss them.

Stick Figure Studios

"He's giving me Mr. Bean vibes." Inspector Clouseau was one of a number of influences on the creation of Mr. Bean. Another influence was a character called Monsieur Hulot (played by the French writer/director/comedian Jacques Tati) who appeared in a number of films in the 1950s through the 1970s. Hulot was also an influence on Clouseau.

Stick Figure Studios

Fair point, but I think this pick was more about kick-starting the franchise than about the original Pink Panther movie itself. While this one has only a tenuous connection to France, The Pink Panther series is about Inspector Clouseau and it's Clouseau we want Cassie to experience. We'll get her to Paris eventually, but we needed to make a quick detour first.

Clarence Newman

Yeah, this was practically almost none. And I was a bit worried voting for RONIN because only part of it takes places in Paris.

Gábor Árki

Glad you liked the movie. I like it too, but I'm kind of sorry that you set up a poll looking for a Paris/romance movie and wound up getting an Action movie set in France and a comedy where the Frenchman is played by a British guy. XD Ah well, hope you enjoy Ronin too!

Andrew Buel

What do you mean? There was a two minute scene in the beginning with Clouseau that took place in Paris. Also, Peter Sellars (English) played Clouseau who, yes, is supposed to be French.

D. T. Nelson

I’m late to this but how was this movie about Paris? It starts in Rome and ends in Rome. The main character, Sir Charles, is British. I assume poor Closeau is Parisian. Nevertheless I did enjoy the movie and Cassie’s reaction.

Allowit-Man

It is important to remember that this movie came out before movies were rated. All films had to be, in theory, acceptable for family viewing. The comedy had to rely on sight gags and silly situations rrather than anything that could be considered vulgar or overtly sexual. Even the seduction scenes had to be played carefully so that it would go over the heads of children, but adults would get it. While these restrictions were sometimes frustrating, they also resulted in writers having to be extremely creative to get their points across. Personally I find movies like this much more genuinely funny than the comedy today, but then I'm old

sharkey197

Yeah, I am way behind :) I have so much other stuff on my list to watch. I haven't prioritized Peter Sellers movies

Clay F

This was a running joke between my Dad and I for many years about whether something was "Clouseau" (incompetent and/or French) or "Poirot" (highly competent and/or Belgian/non-French)

JAKH

Absolutely "A Shot In The Dark", if for no other reason than to reassure Cassie about Clouseau's fate

JAKH

Gotta do Dr. Strangelove! A classic for so many reasons.

G. T. Blackwell

The sequel, A Shot in the Dark (1964) is an Absolute Must now. It seems everyone is agreed. Terrific! Inspector Jacques Clouseau is one of the greatest and funniest characters ever created for film, by the genius Peter Sellers. The next films are… A Shot in the Dark (1964) The Return of the Pink Panther (1975) The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) For some of his Best Non-Clouseau… Dr. Strangelove (1964)… Oscar nominated Lead role The Party (1968) Being There (1979)… Oscar nominated Lead role. I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard in a movie, than when I watched The Party (1968). Highly Highly Recommend. Watching Cassie warm so deeply for the helpless Clouseau, and feel so sorry for him that everyone was working against him behind his back was Hilarious. I Can’t Hardly Wait for Cassie’s reaction to Kato ;-) (-: We have to make this Happen! :-)

Larry Darrell

Thank you for this. Mine is a minority opinion but I much prefer this to the sequels. This is undoubtedly partly because I saw it in the theatre when it presented a new and fresh approach to this sort of comedy but mostly because there is a legitimate plot behind the mayhem. The sequels concentrate so much on the silliness, that they soon end up not having much of a plot at all. My favourite Blake Edwards movie is "Operation Petticoat," which I think you would love.

Ted Little

This is your only Peter Sellers’ film? Whoa! You’re way, way behind ;-)

Larry Darrell

A thoroughly enjoyable caper, a quick shout out to David Niven, and perhaps to canvas on behalf of A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH for some point in the future!

Paul Browne

As a kid, I was laughing so hysterically during the first time watching The Party (1968), that my Mom in the next room had to come in thinking I was having a fit.

Larry Darrell

David Niven and Peter Sellers starred in the original Casino Royale - a James Bond spoof which used all the James Bond characters (as well as the villain from Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale decades later). Peter Sellers is one of those comedians who influenced a generation of Britain’s funniest, including Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson), which you caught in the reaction.

2-Can

Twenty years prior David Niven starred as Raffles, the gentleman thief, so it followed he would be an excellent middle-aged Phantom. Filmmakers also hoped to capitalize on David Niven’s notoriety as the ideal “James Bond,” a moniker then recently bestowed by Niven’s friend, James Bond creator Ian Flemming. But, of course, in this kind of comedy Peter Sellers steals the movie.

Steve Holton

Great reaction Cassie. I love this movie, and you are right, you do have to transport yourself back to the 60's. Sellers is genius. As others have said, he was a late casting and simply stole the movie. The costume party sequence and the chase scene are both so entertaining. I echo the recommendations of A Shot in the Dark and The Return of the Pink Panther. Dr. Strangelove is vintage Sellers. Thanks again for making this channel so fun.

Michael West

Peter Sellers has always delivered top notch comedy. Playing it straight and making the bumbling clumsiness look so natural. 🤣🤣🤣 Along with The Pink Panther, A Shot In The Dark, The Return Of The Pink Panther, and The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Peter Sellers shines in Dr. Strangelove, The Party, and Being There. 😁

Zane From Canada

Yes finally! One of my favorite movies.

Pete Johansson

I’m really enjoying these old school classics before my time. I don’t think I’d watch these on my own so it’s nice to have a virtual buddy 😂

Wes

For the theme song, you had the words right, just needed slightly different notes.

2-Can

I think everyone had a crush on Claudie Cardinale.

Matt Rose

Wow! What a trip! I've been a fan of Peter Seller's Inspector Clouseau since I was a child and I don't think I've actually seen this one!! Only the sequels, apparently. Blew my mind. I'm watching it thinking, "I don't remember ANY of this! WTH??" This wasn't like the sequels. Clouseau is part of an ensemble here, where he is more the main character in later movies. Still his goofy self tho. I would have to check, but this felt like he was the break out character from this movie, rather than it being about him. Anyway, It was fun watching along with Cassie!

Scott Macaulay

Absolutely with you on BEING THERE and THE PARTY.

Matt Rose

STRIKES AGAIN is my second favorite after A SHOT IN THE DARK.

Matt Rose

A SHOT IN THE DARK is one of the best comedies ever made.

Matt Rose

Cassie, you need to get on the sequel, A SHOT IN THE DARK. It's one of the best comedies ever made.

Matt Rose

Great rewatch of this movie with Cassie's fun reaction! I never realized before but the vibe one is to get from this movie is from TO CATCH A THIEF. Only Cassie hasn't watched TO CATCH A THIEF (yet!). That's too bad. The plot of this movie could accurately be called The Three Stooges in To Catch A Thief, where the Stooges are all contained in the marvelous character of Inspector Clousseau. The funniest line to me was the woman in the Egyptian costume telling Clousseau "Take your filthy hands off my asp!" Quite the 1960's time capsule with the whole look of the film, the music, and especially with all of them dancing The Twist in that party scene!

Mike LL

And of course Peter Sellers also played three roles in DR. STRANGELOVE. +1 for all the rest of The Pink Panther/Clouseau films!

Mike LL

Just to add something else if you thought some parts dragged in this film you do not have to worry about that in the sequels. They never suffer from that, they are all hilarious and making inspector clousseau the main character was brilliant. The sequels are themselves far superior than this because they made peter sellers the lead. Also they actually take place in paris.

Night King01

Great to see people fighting over which Panther was the best. Some are saying "Return of" and "Strikes Again", my favourites are "A Shot In The Dark" and "Revenge of". Important to reiterate, the first film (though ironically one of only two that are actually about The Pink Panther, which is a gemstone) is not really part of the franchise. It's a standalone intended as a vehicle for David Niven, but, as others have said, Peter Sellers stole the show as Clouseau. The real fun begins with "A Shot In The Dark". I say we give Cassie three months to start watching the rest before we start singing "I'm Henery The Eighth I am."

Clarence Newman

Agreed. This is good but almost all of the sequels are better.

Stick Figure Studios

Just picture him with an eye patch.

Stick Figure Studios

And he was originally supposed to be played by Peter Ustinov. Sellers was a last-minute replacement. He ended up walking off with the film single-handed.

Stick Figure Studios

I haven't watched this film in a long, long time. Forgot how little of it actually takes place in Paris (RONIN was probably a more appropriate winner for the poll in that regard). Golly, Claudia Cardinale is beautiful. I had such a crush on her as a kid.

Stick Figure Studios

That was hell down there.

Stick Figure Studios

BEING THERE is Sellers' greatest dramatic performance imo. THE PARTY is hysterical.

Stick Figure Studios

This was a first watch for me and I liked it. I grew up watching Pink Panther cartoons and will always remember Pink Panther theme music. Also watched Robert Wagner stuff. Robert Wagner as the nephew is young in this. I like the elegant/chic feel (at least for the time) about the movie. Claudia Cardinale as Princess Dala is beautiful. Also, silly funny movie. I can appreciate that Peter Sellers is a comic genius, though this is the only full movie I have seen Peter Sellers. Of the romance movies in the Paris poll, I've only watched "French Kiss" (1995) (romance/comedy) (Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline). I've watched it a few times and think you would like it. Currently unavailable to stream b/c of complicated ownership issues. I would buy the DVD or Blu-ray if you reacted to French Kiss.

Clay F

"A Shot in the Dark" is probably my favourite film in the series. "The Party" is hilarious... Birdy num num. And "Being There" might be my favourite film of Sellers. It's a classic.

Phillip Bates

This movie was supposed to be just for David Niven's character, The Phantom. They were planning on doing a series of movies with him. But the cast and crew soon realized it was Closeau and Peter Sellers that was the best and funniest character. The rest, they say is history

Bill Maurer

Do note Robert Wagner who plays the American George Lytton here also plays Number Two in Austin Powers.

Noby

This was a good one. If you enjoyed it, you could try the later ones which I thought were even better. The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), and Trail of the Pink Panter (1982). There was also A Shot in the Dark (1964). Maybe you could do a Pink Panther series, including after the older ones, the Steve Martin rendition.

Tom Furze

The great Plas Johnson from The Wrecking Crew playing the sax in the theme music. The Wrecking Crew was a varying group of '60s musicians who recorded so many hits and movie music.

Bert Towle

And most definitely the classic 'The Mouse that Roared', where Sellers played not one, but three different roles in the movie.

Donald Fleming

And, "Murder By Death"

Mark Vaderr

I said murder because YOU said murder!!!

Todzilla

As I mention below, my personal favorite is RETURN, but STRIKES AGAIN is hilarious. I actually got to star in a stage play adaptation of that story in high school once. I played Clouseau. That was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in a theater.

Stick Figure Studios

"Well,... That felt gewd!"

Stick Figure Studios

Also DR. STRANGELOVE.

Stick Figure Studios

Strikes Again is my second favorite behind Return. That's cool you got to play Clouseau in a play! Inspector Clouseau is a staple in my family, we quote him and act out a lot of his actions all the time 😅

Todzilla

I others have already said this, but if you enjoyed this you should definitely watch "A Shot in the Dark" and all the films that came after. Also if you want more of Peter Sellers, I can't recommend enough "The Party" and "Being There".

Jake McNulty

My personal favorite is RETURN, but STRIKES AGAIN is hilarious. I actually got to star in a stage play adaptation of that story in high school once. I played Clouseau. That was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in a theater.

Stick Figure Studios

Written and directed by the great Blake Edwards (known for such films as BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES and VICTOR VICTORIA), THE PINK PANTHER is responsible for three major contributions to the history of cinema: 1) it introduced the iconic character of the bumbling French Inspector Clouseau brilliantly played by comic legend Peter Sellers, 2) it introduced the character of The Pink Panther (who went on to the star in his own series of cartoon shorts) in the brilliant animated opening credit sequence (which became a staple of these movies) and 3) it introduced the jazzy and eminently hummable main title theme song by Henry Mancini. I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid and even had the privilege of portraying inspector Clouseau in a high School production of it once (that was sooooo fun). A stylish, cool, elegant, charming and very funny film, this was such a huge success that it jumpstarted a whole franchise that included A SHOT IN THE DARK, THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER (which is my personal favorite of them all), THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN and REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER. I am looking forward to this reaction because I'm sure you enjoyed this movie and I know you would get a kick out of them all should you decide to continue on with them.

Stick Figure Studios

Was really surprised that this movie won the poll! I hope that Cassie does eventually watch the entire series, as The Pink Panther Strikes Again is my favorite of the entire series. As to this one, Peter Sellers & David Niven are absolutely perfect as comedic adversaries.

Donald Fleming

This movie has one of the best opening credit scenes of all-time.

Mark Vaderr

OMG!!! I never thought Cassie would watch these. My all time favorite is "The Pink Panther Strikes Again". I hope Cassie watches it!🙏 Peter Sellers was a comic genius.

Todzilla

An all-time classic!

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

You have to watch the sequels starting with a shot in the dark. Inspector Clousseau becomes the main character and its as hilarious as you think.

Night King01

Highly recommend the sequel A Shot in the Dark (1964), which was actually made first but released second. While this is a good movie, it's A Shot in the Dark that more clearly establishes the hallmarks of the series.
