X-Men: Days of Future Past - Rogue Cut (2014)

We are flying through these but I don't want them to be over! They are so fun. I loved the mix of the past and present crew and how it all came together, one of my faves I think! This was the Rogue Cut from amazon prime video!

The guy with the spinny baster thing...His name was "Havok." I think you guys missed it... His name was "Alex Summers." You know... Scott Summer's (Cyclop's) brother.
Also, do you remember the teleporting blue guy from X-Men 2... Nightcrawler??? That was the son of Mystique and Azazel. Sadly, they really minimized Nightcrawler's role in the movies; he was a major character in the comics.

*Spoiler Alert*
If you want to cry and be depressed the whole time, yes!! Top level drama.
"Logan" is beyond phenomenal, I just wish they didn't imply that everyone got "Thanos snapped" out of existence. No "Time Heist" redemption either.
I understood, but that doesn't mean my soul wasn't crushed. Then again, that was kinda the point...

The first "Phoenix Saga" was the pinnacle of the OG 90s cartoon. You're 1000% correct!!
Will3000
2024-07-17 17:41:29 +0000 UTC
Agreed. It's Hollywood, and the writing was on the wall. Plus, SO glad they did it, but how does someone beat totally merging the casts together that's a "Logan" centered movie.?! The answer is they don't đ€Ș They just don't...
Not sure about the budget, but I know the story telling after DOFP went a little wonky.
Behind the scenes, and being careful with my words. The Quick Silver "scene" in Apocalypse used practical effects and took 3 months to shoot. That had to be ridiculously expensive in every way.
The one thing I will say is the score in Dark Phoenix was effing đ„
Just the first 15 minutes alone... I was like, damn, they're going hard!! I loved it!!
Will3000
2024-07-17 17:38:37 +0000 UTC
I gotta admit, this was funny. Totally over the top answer, and I'm here for it đ€Ł
There are sooo many Xmen movies, and Xmen 97 on Disney + was actually good (I know that's subjective). Stacked voice cast. Plus, I love Jean Grey like someone pays me to do it, and felt like this was a redemption arch from the OG cartoon where they didn't show how strong she actually is. Xmen 97... I mean, yes yes yes!!
**Spoiler Alert**
But, after that baby came out and Scott was like, "everyone run, Jean and I will handle this". I mean, I freaked out and had all the best feelings ever...

Next up is "X-Men: Apocalypse", then "Deadpool". "Deadpool makes references to "Apocalypse"

THANK YOU Cassie and Carly for watching the Rogue Cut!! Thank you so much! Trust me when I say that this version had a richer story overall! In the theatrical cut you only see Rogue for 3 seconds at the very end and it feels very empty. To me, anyway.
Will3000
2024-07-13 01:15:41 +0000 UTC
I do too!! Mainly because Jean Grey is my favorite of all the mutants. When Logan pauses because she's alive... I gasped in the movie theater and didn't care that a lot of people turned to look at me. I was so HAPPY, then we see Scott, and then Professor X... Last Stand was still good (IMO), but we lost so many main characters. Jean hit the hardest for me.
So this ending was something I didn't think was possible.
It was so incredibly wonderful!!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. AND, I respect yours.
I hope you can respect mine. The Rogue Cut (while not free) tells a complete story and actually makes sense.
The theatrical release is very basic and leaves out moments like Beast & Mystique's romance/betrayal. It's instead replaced with a single look between them that doesn't explain anything from the movie you're watching.
I think both are fantastic, but also very different. So, I really don't mean to be controversial or spark a debate. I like them both for different reasons.
PS: Cass especially loves the romance side of things, and the Rogue Cut had 2 relationship focused scenes that the OG release didn't. Thinking of her enjoyment, that was probably a positive, which is great!! I want HER to like it.
But, that's just me. I totally think both movie are great! No complaints.

This was my first time watching the Rogue Cut. Unlike others here, I really enjoyed the modifications to the theatrical release, several deaths were different in this version.
The look on Rogue's face when she sees Kitty is utter pain, torment, and priceless. Anna Paquin nailed that scene without saying a single word.

What reeeeally sucks, is that it's almost the only Torrent version of the movie out there, but they're about the only Reactors IK who've opted for the ''Rogue Cut'', so this time it works, that that's all you can find basically, lol

Alas, this is the high water mark of the series with the "First Class" crew: the next two did had considerably less critical and financial success. But this was fun and I hadn't seen the rogue cut so I watched along with it. I don't think the Rogue cut really adds that much so I can see why they cut it (as much as I like Rogue.)

I only watch the extended versions of LotR - completely superior to the theatricals, imo, and I'm so glad Carly saw this version. For LotR, the theatricals are more about what isn't there than what is. In fact I will often avoid a reaction video if it's to the theatricals.

The only part of adding in Rogue to the plot which kind of made sense was using her to replace Kitty, since Kitty was seriously injured by Logan during the whole process. But I agree with you that it wasnât necessary, and I still prefer the original theatrical release. Having Kitty stay the course while she was injured showed her dedication to the cause and added to the tension.

DOFP is my favorite of the franchise. I am ashamed to admit that until very recently I didn't even know the Rogue cut existed and watching it here was my first time watching it. I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or not but I could have done without the Rogue stuff. It wasn't needed. The final version of the film, in my opinion, was edited properly. It seemed like they just added the Rogue stuff in because they wanted to include her but she wasn't necessary to the plot at all and they had to do acrobatics with the plot to make it work. Charles, Magneto, and Bobby jumping on a plane that instantly takes them from China to New York and then instantly flying back was just sloppy in my opinion. I am curious how you would have felt about the final version of the movie.

I still wish she had done the theatrical versions with Carly. That way she would have had all the ground covered. Iâve seen those movies so many times that Iâd much rather watch the theatrical versions now if I do a rewatch. Totally agree on KoH, thatâs the only movie for me that the Extended added 2 full stars to its grade.

@Stich - A movie doesn't have to have a happy ending to be great. Logan is arguably the greatest superhero film ever, and this is coming from a big MCU fan.
Richard Maurer
2024-07-04 14:59:34 +0000 UTC
I'm not as big a fan of this X-Men movie as a lot of people are(X2 is still my favorite). Part of me is just annoyed that they were so lazy about continuity. Xavier's alive, and in his original body! Magneto and Rogue have their powers back, even though they were given the cure! Wolverine has metal claws again after they were chopped off! And not one word about how any of that happened. I mean, this is comic book stuff we're talking about, they could have made some stuff up that was totally contrived to explain it, but they were like "Why bother? We're rewriting history at the end off this movie anyway." As for who En Sabah Nur is, that's in the next X-Men movie. :)
If you're watching the Deadpool movies as well, you can watch X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool in either order, they don't connect at all. BUT it's important that you watch Logan BEFORE watching Deadpool 2!

I don't think the little sister we saw is supposed to be Wanda. In the comics(and in the MCU movies) Pietro and Wanda were twins. The little sister did mention another sister, I'm guessing that's supposed to be Wanda.

What a great reaction this wasâŠand another example of why Iâve become such a fan of your channel. Iâve seen this movie at least a dozen times, but tonight I felt all the feels like I was seeing it for the first time. Well, I guess in a way it was, because this was my first time seeing The Rogue Cut. The additions to the movie were interesting, but they didnât make the movie any better.
Yes, this movie raises a lot of questions and Iâve read a lot of fan theories. But Iâm one who likes to keep it simple, and I think you and Carly hit the nail on the head. IMO, this movie hits the reset button. The original trilogy now doesnât exist in this new present. The gang is back together and the mutants are thriving in Charlesâ school. The one open ended question, however, is where is Erik in this new present? What has he done in this presentâs past? There really werenât any clues as to what his new storyline is. Which I thought was a perfect way to branch off into another series of movies to answer those questions. But, so far, no dice.
As for the end scene with Logan being pulled out of the water and being handed over âStrikerâ, and the post credit scene, those will be addressed soon. Great job as usual ladies!

Yeeeeeessss! This is the pinnacle of X-MEN in my opinion. There are some highlights still but... Bryan Singer really pulled out all the stops in this one. I like the Rogue Cut but I can see why they made those cuts. Carly had the best line with the "Oval Office." Fassbender really owns the character, and he has more to do in the next one as well....

I do think that when there are more then one version of a movie that it should always be the theatrical version. Itâs what people likely own, and more than likely itâs whatâs most available to stream.
I realize a lot of people were clamouring for The Rogue Cut whenever the subject came up, but it doesnât mean that the majority wanted it. Maybe a poll would work if this situation arises again. Like with LOTR.
To be fair, Cassie did say in the butter tier live last night that she just chose the first version she saw on Amazon so it was just by happenstance that she ended up watching this version, so it really wasnât a case of âsqueaky wheelsâŠâ at least.

This was a first time watch for me also with the Rogue Cut. I do feel bad about the many times I commented against it on various Patreons. đ It does seem to add to the story. Now if the additions are unnecessary, as some other commenters have said here, I don't have the perspective yet. I enjoyed the film with the additions, and it was a delight to watch Cassie's and Carly's reactions. This really is the very best X-Men film, whichever the version, oh well, maybe except for LOGAN.

It is not about it being better or worse. It is about access to that version of the film itself. just for myself, the Rouge Cut is not available on any streaming platform. Most people will only have access to the theatrical, and while it is mostly consistent, there is a point around 1:30 in where there is a 20 min gap between versions, not to mention all the smaller gaps thought the movie. The reaction sync is completely thrown off, and it is challenging to match up again due to the nature of the video in the video needing to be blurred.

I think this is arguably the best X-MEN movie and one of the reasons might be that Bryan Singer (who directed the first two and had a real handle on the material) came back to do this one. It beautifully combines the original and the younger casts into an exciting story that in the end, as you observe, sort of resets the timeline. The sad thing is that after this reset, the series drops the ball. Aside from the phenomenal LOGAN (and not counting the two DEADPOOL movies), it's all downhill from here with the X-Men series. That's why I choose to look at this as the REAL end of this franchise (since DEADPOOL kind of does his own thing and LOGAN is a standalone story not really connected to the "continuity" of these films). Glad you got to see it and even more glad (though not surprised) you liked it. This was my first time watching the Rogue Cut and I gotta say, for reasons already listed here in these comments, I prefer the theatrical version.

Loved this one. I remember seeing this in the theater and walking out riveted. This is my first time with the rogue cut. Personally I'm not sure it added much in my opinion. I love the time travel elements of this one and the addition of both sets of X-Men teams old and young. This one is great and the stakes have never been higher. Also the Quicksilver time in a bottle scene is one of the best in the whole series. I'm not sure what thoughts will be on deadpool as it's very different in tone with its dark humour and violence but its obviously well loved. It's really more of an adjacent branch rather than a continuation of the X-Men timeline. Hopefully you watch it sooner than later after your holiday of course. Thanks for getting this one out quick.

The mid-credits scene of the Pentagon cell is Trask in Magneto's old cell (with a beard now). When they were reeling in 1973 Logan out of the river there was a newspaper article saying Trask had been arrested for treason or something. Why put him in that unique cell when he's not a mutant? I dunno, probably just poetic.

I always think of Days of Future Past - not as a reset - but as a happy ending for our original crew. They cleverly fixed a lot of things we hated about The Last Stand, where Charles, Jean, and Scott all die.
So, we no longer need to think of James McAvoyâs cast as prequels to a dreadful future, since our friends are now free to create different stories, unbound by what we already knew. XMEN is messy - a lesson fixed in the MCU - but youâll still enjoy the stories. (Hmm⊠maybe thatâs still a reset đ€).
LOVED how completely gripped you both were in this one. Thank you for cranking this one out before your well-deserved holiday!

"If someone stumbles, and loses their way, it doesn't mean they are lost forever"... this phrase is used in the earlier films by "Charles" to "Logan", which he tells himself through "Logan" in this film... it is great scene between Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy.
The mobster's daughter was saying "Jimmy" to "Logan" when he first travels back, because to that point he was known by his real name in the movies, "James Howlett". It wasn't until "Origins" where he got the name "Logan" from "Kayla SIlverfox". This is also why "Logan" doesn't understand "Charles" in Paris when he is calling him "Logan". The future consciousness of "Logan" had slipped away and the 1973 "Logan" was back after the run-in with "Stryker", and why he was completely disorientated and "Charles" told him he was on acid. Out of all of the tricky bits in this film to keep a track of, I think this was probably the only one that slipped through. You guys did a pretty good job of keeping things straight!
Peter Dinklage plays "Boliver Trask" and is, indeed, in "Game of Thrones", probably the role he is most known for.
This was the second movie in the same year that featured "Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver". The is "Avengers: Age of Ultron" where is was played by Aaron Taylor Johnson and due the Fox still having the rights to "X-men" he and his sister "Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch" were not mutants but "Enhanced individuals", as it was the infinity stones that gave them their powers in the MCU. Evan Peters who played "Quicksiliver" in "Days of Future Past" also played a special cameo of the "recast Pietro" in "WandaVision" for a couple of episodes.
The post credit scene was a good hint to who was going to be in the next installment in that trilogy of "X-men" movies, it was a powerful mutant with 4 horseman in the background. I can't remember if the title of the movie was not when this was release, I don't think it was, which is why it made a good teaser - it directly relates to the title of the next movies (no, not "Deadpool").

I love the mix of the old and new cast. I love the stakes. I love Wolverine and also that he ultimately isn't who saves the day (he has enough chances to do that in the other films). I love Peter Maximoff. It makes no sense not to bring him with you after you free Magneto, except that if they did, he could have solved the whole problem and then there's no dramatic 3rd act. I absolutely hate the "second mutation" idea that is supposed to explain why Kitty can suddenly transport people's consciousness into the past. That is unforgivably stupid, especially when the greatest mind/mentalist is sitting right there watching her do it. But it's not bad enough to ruin the rest of the movie, which is great.
Walter
2024-07-03 14:27:05 +0000 UTC
this is my first time watching the Rogue Cut and I agree that it's definitely the inferior version. Rogue serves no purpose, it's just clearly a way to force her in. The whole side mission to rescue her from the X Mansion really makes no sense at all (why the mansion? And why has Cerebro been turned in to a lab?). It doesn't ruin what is a really good movie, but I will stick to the theatrical version from now on.

This is probably my favorite X-Men film of the series apart from Logan (2017). Love seeing the old cast and the new together. And the more I see of James McAvoy the better of an actor he shows he is. Can't wait til you get to see Split (2016) and Glass (2019). Also, small little flex, but I was actually on set and got to watch him film some scenes for Robert Redford's film The Conspirator (2010) in Savannah when I was at film school. Pretty good film in its own right about the aftermath of the Lincoln assassination.

I do love this film. One of the best X-Men movies ever. Maybe THE best. But have to admit...there's something a bit sad about when the alternate timeline, multiverse shit starts to go full swing. Oh that's a tough one to judge. Game of Thrones is great - but you have to have the stomach for quite a few different things. The violence, the non-consent, the 'non-conventional family dynamics'...
Which is a shame in a way, because it probably put off a lot of people who would love the rest of the show immensely. I wish they'd made a 'censored cut' version available, if its even possible, for those who literally cannot handle certain aspects of the show.

Days Of Future Past (2014) Inspiration:
This film draws heavily from Uncanny X-Men issues #141â142 by Chris Claremont, also known as Days of Future Past. It was created as a unique one-off time travel story that by the end of the story would return everything to normal. It's similar to a fun time travel episode in a series like Star Trek. But to the surprise of Claremont, the story became a massive hit, with Days of Future Past (1981) being viewed as one of the best X-Men stories of the 1980s alongside the more ambitious and planned Dark Dark Phoenix Saga.
The Days of Future Past narrative depicted a dark future caused by the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly, Charles Xavier, and Moira MacTaggert in 1980. Mutants and their allies were then hunted down, similar to what we see in this film. In the comic, a much older Kitty Pryde (Played by Elliot Page in this film) was sent from the future of 2013 back into her younger body. This part of the story takes place in the present day, during the 1980s when the comic was released.
The comic followed a young Kitty Pryde trying to convince everyone that this possible future was real, and in the end, this dark future was seemly stopped. The comic left it open ended, similar to Sarah Connors speech at the end of Terminator 2: Judgement Day on if they actually stopped Judgement Day.
Seeing an older Kitty Pryde in the Days of Future Past comic was also pretty cool as this highlighted her character as a hardened veteran, a massive contrast to her younger present-day self, who at the time was a new character to the X-Men comics, so fans were pretty undecided on if they liked her or not.
The Roster is also a little different, with Storm leading the team and Wolverine, Colossus, Angel, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde backing her up. The comic spends far more time in this alternate future, which is something I wish the film did, rogue cut does explore the future slightly more which I love.
The possible future depicted in Days of Future Past still exists in the comics as its own alternate timeline known as Earth-811 within the Marvel Multiverse, Mainline Marvel Universe being Earth-616 also known as Prime Earth. Marvel returned to this future a few times, with the most recent being X-Men: Days of Future PastâDoomsday (2023), which showcased how everything went wrong post-assassinations. We saw events like the Avengers resigned to protest against the government's laws against mutants. One of the darkest moment was when Spider-Man was jumped by an angry mob who thought he was a Mutant, killing him. It makes no sense that a mob of normal humans would be able to overpower a hero like Spider-Man but regardless it's extremely dark.
To end the Days of Future Past talk the X-Men Animated Series (1994 to 1997) also adopted the Days of Future Past storyline. Set in 2055 it showcased a world ruled by Sentinels where all of the X-Men are dead minus Wolverine and a few others. Bishop travels back in time using a device to stop the assassination of Senator Kelly. It's a storyline that I personally prefer over the comic myself but both are amazing.
Timeline confusion:
Moving forward, remember that we're on a new timeline born from the events of 1973. From Mutants being revealed to the public for the first time to Magneto attacking the Whitehouse, Logan being captured, Trask's assassination being stopped, and him being contained by the government. These events never happened in the original timeline, branching off into a new history you'll discover in future films. First Class being the start of both timelines, original timeline and this new revised timelines.
Another instance of change is Young Charles delving into Logan's mind, witnessing the events of the 2000s films, including the tragic Death of Jean Grey. This newfound knowledge theoretically empowers Charles to prevent these events from occurring, offering a chance for him to correct the mistakes of his future self. This explains why we see Scott and Jean alive and well. It also acts as a good ending for the original X-Men cast while we move into the younger, newer cast introduced in First Class (2011).
Deadpool (2016) and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) are the first films in this new timeline, so you'll notice changes immediately moving forward into future films.

This was a first watch for me. (I've never seen the theatrical version but now have seen the Rogue cut as a watch along with this reaction.) I enjoyed the movie. Kept my attention the entire movie. Good acting. I like the reset. Fresh. Hard to follow at times but not too bad. In any case, the way they did the reset is creative and entertaining. I was hoping there would have been more of Rogue. I like Anna Paquin. I liked her in True Blood. This was my favorite performance of Jennifer Lawrence so far in the franchise. That was an interesting credits scene with Trask (Peter Dinklage aka Tyrion Lannister).
James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, and Michael Fassbender all 3 excellent in this. DOFP has a good cast. I liked Nicholas Hoult in "About a Boy" and "A Single Man" (2009) (w/Colin Firth and Julianne Moore). I liked Elliot Page in Juno (2007). Patrick Stewart is looking old in this and for sure in the more recent "Star Trek: Picard" series. By the way, I remember when there were 3 networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) + PBS.
The X-Men franchise has grown on me. Also, I enjoy your reactions. I have not seen Apocalypse. The reviews of Apocalypse seem mediocre? But I do like Olivia Munn. She a good actor and beautiful. I liked her in The Newsroom. I have seen and like Deadpool.

This was a first watch of the Rogue cut for me. I've never watched the theatrical version. I read online some people recommending the Rogue cut but this is one below who didn't:
"The Rogue Cut is an interesting 'what if' version of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but ultimately the original film is the better one. Itâs nice that the filmmakers went back and completed the editing and special effects for Anna Paquinâs cut scenes⊠but it sort of makes sense why these scenes were removed in the first place. The whole extra subplot of Iceman and friends needing to find Rogue to replace a wounded Kitty just complicates the story too much. This is a classic example of how less is more, as the simpler cut of the film is sleeker and easier to follow."

Really canât wait to watch this later, canât wait to see your reaction to the quicksilver scene and a few others tbh. As this is one of my favourite comic book films. I also thought McAvoy deserved a Oscar nod for this as I thought he was incredible in nearly every scene.
To the people moaning about Cassie watched to Rouge cut, I personally didnât think it was better or worse than the original film. It just adds a bit more to it and I think you should still be able to watch the original version, you will just have to re sink the film a couple of times. Just wondering if your planning on watching The New Mutants, if not it could be a good one of October for scary not too scary.

I like to think of it as less of a reset and more of a second past we don't yet know much about. Many adventures have been had in the world of The X-Men, who knows which missions they partook in throughout this new version of the past. Ripples create change and enough ripples create different scenarios.... just one in a ......multiverse? đ
As others have and will point out, yes Peter is Pietro from WandaVision.... same character, same super speed powers, ...... but if you remember it was Agatha All Along, puppeting actor Ralph Bohner, not Wanda's real brother Pietro..... so where'd she get him from????, still kind of unexplained, so you can imagine how weirded out and excited we were when he showed up in that show as estranged uncle Pietro after debuting in this movie, and strange how they made Wanda his little sister in DOFP as opposed to a twin.

You could still watch on Disney, as I think the only extra bit is the train scene, youâd just have to re sink after that.

My thoughts exactly and also, in my opinion reactors should watch it the same way we did the first time.

This is my favorite X-men film, it's so good! They blended the OG cast perfectly with the new cast and you really felt the tension and urgency of the threat. I love how First Class felt like Erik's story but Days is definitely Charles. James McAvoy is so good, in my opinion he steals almost every scenes. My favorite is when he talks to his older self, the man knows how to cry, lol. It always gives me chills the way he says pain and you really get to appreciate the sacrifice that Charles makes. And I love that Logan more takes a backseat and is in the leadership role, he has to be the one to help Charles.
But I might get a lot of hate for this because I know it's really beloved but I really don't care for the Rogue cut. Raven coming back to the mansion and seducing Hank just to destroy cerebro was just so unnecessary because it changed nothing, in the very next scene they know where she's going and it was already established that he couldn't control her, she wouldn't let him. All it did was make me really dislike Raven to be honest, it was just so cruel. Hank has made mistakes with her but he didn't deserve that and it just made him look stupid. And bringing in Rogue also added nothing, all it did was lessen the tension because half of it was wondering how long Kitty could stay connected to Logan while being injured but you lose that once she takes over, she barely has any lines. And again sorry but I don't care for Anna Paquin's acting in this, it's very wooden, when she says "hi Logan" I feel nothing and she's supposed to have a father/daughter or maybe even brother/sister bond with him. And in the theatrical cut it's only implied that Kitty and Bobby could be a couple, you only see them hold hands and that's it but here it's clear and it's just weird having him just go back to being with Rogue in the new future when it was Kitty who was more upset about his death and I thought they did dirty to Bobby in this one, he "dies" way later in the other verson and again there was no reason to kill him off so early. I might be alone on this but yeah don't care for it.
Please react to more James' films, he is just so good and very underrated. You definitely need to watch Split! And also I know you don't do this but I highly suggest watching the bloopers for this movie, they are so funny and if you didn't already love James you will love him even more after it, lol.

I wish reactors would just stick to theatrical versions. Most other cuts of anything are not worth paying the extra money to rent/buy a copy just to watch a reactor I am already paying to support. Theatrical versions are the most widely available and most likely to already be owned or available on a streaming service as included content (the theatrical version is available on Disney which I already pay for as well). Another reaction I will have to miss because I am not paying more to watch a movie I already own the best version of.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand the Rogue cut, to me this one doesn't make any sense and just drags the movie, they feel like deleted scenes that should have stayed deleted, not all of them are bad or anything but yeah, just don't care for it at all.

Cassie is really flying through these uploads before she goes on her hols. I'm impressed, but I hope she's getting the odd power nap in. The baggage she takes on the plane should not be under her eyes.
