X-Men: First Class (2011) - Full Reaction

Oh my gggooossshhh!! I won't spoil the reaction here, but I will say that we loved seeing young Xavier and Eric and seeing how it all came to be. Still broke my heart though even though I knew it was coming!

X-Men: First Class (2011) - Full Reaction

Comments

This is my favorite of the actual x-men movies.

Yaisu

Fun fact, when Erik tells Raven she is too young for him (when she is in his bed) she changes into an older version of her human form. The actress who plays that version is Rebecca Romjin, who played Mystique in the original X-Men movies. Also, in comic lore, the Devil guy Azazel is Nightcrawler's dad, hence their similar look and powers. Nightcrawler gets his blue colour from his mother: Mystique.

ProgressiveRoxx

That was a good movie. That was my first time watching it. And now we know how Beast became blue. Great Reaction Ladies. Thanks for joining Carly.

Rick Williams

what a great comment, made me smile thank you

Cassie

Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee absolutely kills it in the true story THE OUTPOST playing Army Specialist Ty Carter, although Scott Eastwood (playing Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha) owns the film. Added bonus that Cassie probably won't like: the movie captures probably THE most authentic, non-stop, potty-mouthed sh*t-talk of Army enlisted men. The action is uber-realistic (think 13 HOURS, LONE SURVIVOR and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN). Directed by West Point grad and combat officer Rod Lurie, The battle the movie is based on produced two living Medal of Honor recipients, the first time that has happened in more than 50 years. The last hour and twenty minutes is absolutely harrowing.

Above Average Dave

If it’s widely available to stream there is a chance. She goes with the most wide range version usually. I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll happen though.

David Freese

Would I be correct in thinking we aren’t doing The New Mutants (2020) which I thought was a half decent movie tbh. But could be one for October 😀

Dean Holt

All good films...but Dark Phoenix was just so meh and average. Feels totally unnecessary looking back.

Chris Thom

Another movie you got me teary eyed in. What is that? You make me see the emotional side to movies I missed upon first viewings. My first reactions were usually "Oh that's cool" Now I'm like "Yes! He does care so much!" Stop making me feel!!

Scott Macaulay

Alway thought this was a pretty good movie and yet again they pick two great actors to play Erik and Charles. I know it’s not next but can’t wait to see you guys watch Days of Future Past, it’s my favourite X-men movie so far and has some of the greatest scenes ever. Jennifer Lawrence was good in the first two but wasn’t a fan of how they wrote her in the last two films, I’ll explain more when you watch them as I don’t what to spoil anything. As regards to Magneto I think they do a great job a telling his story in these movies.

Dean Holt

Cass... Michael Fassbender was also in "300".

Doug Fisher

I think you mean leery not "weary".

Doug Fisher

Blasphemy... Craig's Bond was never like Connery's Bond, ESPECIALLY at the end.

Doug Fisher

Jennifer Lawrence was the “It Girl” of all It Girls at the time, so it’s really no surprise her role was elevated. They lucked out signing her to a 3 movie contract before she hit big, and then they made use of it.

Cole Jennett

Next is The Wolverine... make sure you stick around for post credits with that one, Cassie.

Daniel Turbyfill

When they say they don’t have sonar on the ship, and then realize that because of Banschee that they do, I was so hoping for Cassie to give a “one ping only please”😂

Cole Jennett

Darwins death was so stupid, his mutant power is he adapts to survive! In the comics his powers teleported him away from the hulk to survive. He essentially cant be killed.

Stretch

You made me curious, so I looked it up. There have been about 50 people to play in both DC and Marvel. They use a couple that were in one of the animated shows and some properties that are owned by Marvel or DC but I wouldn't really consider a "Marvel/DC movie", so that will affect the count.

Mike Lemon

When you guys watch "The Wolverine" next, you *need* to watch the mid credits scene. It's necessary to help explain something for "Days of Future Past". Anyway, I knew you ladies would like this one! This one was breath of fresh air after seeing X-Men Origins.

Cody Nelson

Worst Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw imaginable. Mystique continues to be unrecognizable from the comics and they dig deep into 'D' tier X-Men to round out the team while legendary members continue to go ignored... still, tough to complain about Fasbender and McAvoy...

Story Archer

Cassie's impersonation of "Sebastian Shaw" (Kevin Bacon) using the sub's nuclear reactor... chef's kiss! Enjoyed the reaction, both Carly and Cassie riveted to an enjoyable movie. Charles can feel the pain of his subject, which makes that scene with coin and the cuts back-and-forth a quite good way of showing that. "Charles" is feeling all of "Shaw's" pain as the coin goes through his frozen body. Carly asked how did "Mystique" know "Shaw" was wearing the helmet? It took her out of the movie for sec. "Mystique" saw the helmet when they first met "Shaw" at the CIA compound, and they talk about "Charles" as "the telepath" not being around. Then, just prior to her mimicking "Shaw" on the beach, "Charles" mentions that he could see him ("through Erik") but could not get into his mind, implying "Shaw" was wearing the helmet. McAvoy, Fassbender, and Bacon are great in this, the rest of the cast are pretty solid. Zoe Kravitz ("Angel") one of the few actors that has worked on both sides of the street, DC and Marvel, as she was "Selina Kyle/Catwoman" to Robert Pattinson's "Batman/Bruce Wayne" in "The Batman"... now that I think of it Colin Farrell was also in the "The Batman" and the often panned early 2000's "Daredevil"... wow, that has Affleck as "Daredevil" who then played "Batman/Bruce Wayne"... maybe there is more than I think. I also find it interesting when historical events are leveraged to use as a focal point to weave fictitious plot points into. I don't know if Matthew Vaughn had been involved in a movie that did it prior to this, but he is later in "The Kingsman" series of movies. Between this and "Stardust" you can see the style that he does continue "The Kingsman" movies.

Mojo One Thousand

I think her point may have been how did he control just them while Mystique was right next to them yet she was not affected.

Brian McGovern

Funny how the Magneto theme end credits music of this movie mixes well with the Popcorn in Bed outro music. Might even be in the same key! Also, I wanted to remind you guys that Moira was in the third X-Men movie played by a different older actress. She was the woman who woke up Charles in the end credits scene, his consciousness now in a new body. I honestly love her character, I did in the original 90s cartoon as well, even though she's just a regular human. She's a great ally.

YodatheHobbit

Ya if you go back you’re not gonna find anything between Professor X and Mystique. This film was created as a potential full reboot point. The idea was maybe that they’d keep Wolverine but let this cast carve their own history out… As you’ll see with the next X-Men film, that wouldn’t be the case. Bryan Singer (YUCK what a piece of garbage) would come back and take over again. At this point the MCU was starting to really pop off and with the popularity of The Avengers, Fox and the X-Men felt they needed to do something drastic… So we get a melding of both past and future… DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Which is in my opinion the best X-Men film of the franchise and worth all the weirdness… But before that we need to go with Logan to Japan and have an adventure that changes the direction of Logan forever! So exciting.

djKENTO

I remember I was weary about this movie when I first heard about it, especially after the not so good Origins. But the trailer and the initial positive feedback convinced me and my friends to watch it in a theatre. So, this was the first X-Men movie I watched on the big screen. Prequels are hard to do right, but I think they nailed it with this one and managed to deliver one of the best movies in the franchise.

Gábor Árki

I presume you are referring to the blurred and muted movie on the reaction? If so, than as it has been stated when you signed up to this tear "You will need your own copy of the Movie/Show to watch a long."

Gábor Árki

I can't wait! It's my favorite X-Men film! And I know a lot of people want her to do the Rogue cut but I much prefer the theatrical cut. I just didn't care for the scenes they added, it angered me with a character I won't mention here because of spoilers.

Annie519

This may be the first time I’ve seen this since theaters. It’s definitely as good as I remember though. You remember how the Daniel Craig Bond ended up becoming like the classic Connery type Bond by the end of the series? X-Men is doing the same kinda thing with this film and its sequels. By the end it’s totally the real X-Men and a fun ride. Loving these full reactions, totally worth the membership. Feel better Carly!

Matthew Gibson

What a fantastic way to end my night. An absolutely awesome reaction to an absolutely awesome movie. Like most of the X-Men movies, there’s a nice mix of action, humor, and drama. But what makes this my favorite in the series is the emotional impact The pain and torment of Eric’s past makes him so empathetic, and you almost can’t blame him for his actions. Knowing that Charles can feel the struggle within Eric, and so badly wants to guide him past it, but can’t because Eric’s rage is so blinding, also makes Charles an empathetic character. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender do such a great job at manifesting both of these battles. While I really enjoy the original X-Men movies and that cast, this movie and this cast are special. Now I patiently wait for you and Carly to get to Days of Future Past.

Dan M

I can't see or hear anything of the movie? Do I something wrong?

Ben Keller

Well, this was fun! I'm really enjoying your X-Men Movie reactions! Carly - Magneto was able to move those people in the air because they have metal in their uniforms!

Philip Alan

It's been a bit since I watched this one, so good. Thank you again...that Rose Mcgown is fantastic🤣🤣Rose Byne too. That made me giggle for the next 10 mins. Can't wait till you get to Days

Chris Retzlaff

Off the Xmen subject, a good James McAvoy movie with Christina Ricci that not too many ppl talk about or even know about is "Penelope". Very cute and different love story. Stumbled upon it years ago and absolutely loved it. I know it's one you would enjoy. You should check it out

Keyuana Gray

Isn't Days of Future Past next?

Chris Thom

Was this directed by same guy that did the first two? Brian Singer I think his name is?

Chris Thom

Interesting that Carly brought up Britany Snow there at the beginning because I always think of her as like your cousin or something. Or from the same neck of the woods at least. Also January Jones.

Chris Thom

First Class is a highlight. Michael Fassbender kills it as Magneto. Looking forward to Deadpool, Logan, and Deadpool 2.

Chris W

the next film should be The Wolverine and I highly recommend you watch the unrated cut - there is a whole fun action piece largely cut out of the theatrical version for no reason I can understand. And thanks for covering this series - it's been fun re-watching them with you.

Walter

This was such a fun one. Thanks Cassieand Carly. I love that this movie explains all the lore of the first 3 that we are just expected to accept in those movies. Probably my favorite in a tie with DOFP.

Ian A

Possibly controversial opinion: I think Rebecca Romijn was a far better Mystique than Jennifer Lawrence.

Just Plain Bob

The next one is The Wolverine and there is a big post credit scene!

Eric Wallace

Wow this one hits the spot.. great movie great reactions. The scenes I knew would hit hard did. I love how this really gives us an Insight into magnetos torment at the loss of his mother. I also like the back story with mystique and her relationship with Charles. Both McAvoy and Fassbender do a great job of giving a performance that has hints of the previous stars but are still their own. The storyline based around the Cuban missile crisis really works for this. As humans I think it's obvious we're supposed to be on professor X's side but this movie makes it very easy to understand where Eric is coming from even if we can't agree with it . Can't wait for days of future past. That might be my favourite. Are we going to get deadpool in the reaction timeline?

Canadianant

So you haven't seen DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Look forward to that one, you should watch it. It is exceptional and contains tons of surprises, and it is better than most of the films before it in the series.

MikeLL

A great reaction to this very entertaining movie that restarted the X-Men franchise. Can't wait to see the next two movies. It is true that the retcon of Charles and Raven's relationship in this movie really doesn't match what was set up in the original trilogy of X films. What till they see what is in store, ha ha! One of my favorite parts of this film is how they set up Hank McCoy. Kevin Bacon was an excellent baddie in this one.

MikeLL

Man oh Man this is one of my favorites. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are just so wonderful stepping into these shoes and Kevin Bacon is always just such a perfect bad guy. I love it. I could just watch Magneto hunt Nazis aaaaaallllllll day long.

Morgan A. Colbert

That was Hannah Montana's boyfriend. I have a daughter born in 1996, so I know some Hannah Montana stuff. "Mutually-assured destruction. How do we not have better ideas than this?" While a fantasy setting, I like how the movie included history -- (a) the Nazi/Jewish stuff and (b) Cuban missle crisis. I thought Bacon and Fassbender were good at their characters. I like McAvoy and Hoult. Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones, and Zoë Kravitz gave good acting performances and were pleasant to look at. I like how the Professor discovered mutants -- that was cool the way the movie did that. Agree that the Logan cameo was also cool (I am a Hugh Jackman fan). One of my favorite parts of the movie was when Magneto was cultivating his power and pulling the submarine out of the water -- that was strking. I have seen 6 X-Men movies: --1. First Class (2011). In 2011, I took my son to see First Class in the theater at his request, but don't really remember, except that McAvoy played a good guy. Thus, the rewatch I did moments ago is essentially a first watch. --2. Deadpool (2016). I only recently learned that Deadpool is an X-Men movie. In 2016, I went to the theater with my son and his friends (then age 16) to see Deadpool so that they could watch the R-rated movie at their age. I ended up liking it. Hilarious. My favorite X-Men movie. --3. X-Men (2000), 4. X2 (2003), 5. Last Stand (2006), 6. Origins: Wolverine (2009). Recent first watch of these initially-released four along w/Cassie's reactions. I enjoyed Last Stand the most of the four. I may not continue to watch the X-Men reactions, except maybe reactions to the two Deadpool movies and Logan, because X-Men movies generally are not typically the kind of movie I watch. Yet, while I know nothing of comic books or the accepted story of X-Men, I am glad I invested time to watch six X-Men movies so far to enjoy aspects of the movies and expand my horizon -- to gain appreciation of X-Men movie creativity, dilemmas faced by the characters, and cultural references.

Clay F

Can't wait for this, saving it for the weekend!

JohnnyUtah

One bit of trivia: Alex Summers/Havoc is Scott Summers’/Cyclops’ brother in the comics. The next movie in the X-Men saga is “The Wolverine.” Much like his origins movie, I don’t like it as much as some in the series, but I also think it’s better than many people give it credit. Still hoping that the ladies include both “Deadpool” movies in their X-Men reactions. It really would be like a first watch now that they have the background.

Just Plain Bob

Absolutely love this movie. James McAvoy is brilliant as Xavier and Fassbender really captures the essence of Magneto's journey. Great origin story, it really builds the characters. I think you are going to absolutely love Days of Future Past. Can't wait for that reaction.

Michael West

Excited to watch this with you guys! I bought the BluRays in anticipation!

Scott Macaulay

What can I say except another great X-men reaction by Cassie and Carly :-)

Richard Maurer

You’ve gotta watch the Rogue Cut of the next one!!!!

Bryan Hathaway

I like this and Days of Future Past despite, in my opinion, the miscasting and focus on mystique and shoehorning her relationship with Charles which is whatever the opposite of hinted at in the original movies. My continuity gripes aside I enjoy the next few films. Up next is The Wolverine (2013), then X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Deadpool (2016) and so on

Choof

Really fun reaction and I loved watching this with you guys!! Can’t wait for the next movies! I think you’ll enjoy Days of Future Past!

Avastrasza

8 year old me was in love with Mystique

Jack Mingle

This is so far removed from the source material it is almost... comical. It is a good X-Men film, largely carried by the two leads. Fassbender was born in Germany and moved to Ireland when an infant (and also competed in le Mans driving a Porsche last year). He is a phenomenal talent as is James McAvoy (whom is actually Scottish). Asides from Beast whom was very faithful, and along with Iceman, Jean Grey, Cyclops and Angel (Warren Worthington III), Hank was an original X-Man. Havok appeared very early on and shock horror… he’s Cyclops’ little brother (these movies criminally under utilise Cyclops… Scott is to the X-Men what Cap is to Avengers). The biggest detraction is Mystique. Raven is over fifty years older than Xavier and they did not grow up together. She actually had a child with Azazel… Nightcrawler whom she abandoned at birth, and then went on to become Rogue’s step-mom whom was raised as a criminal. Mystique was never an X-Man and was a constant and lethal enemy, killing and maiming many over the years to the point that Wolverine put out a kill order on her (he missed). The next one is fab though, the best things got until Logan. But yeah… don’t worry too much about the continuity. Kevin Feige was responsible for the MCU timeline and was actually on the side-lines at FOX but was largely ignored as producers just used “mutant of the month” because something looked cool in the comics with no care or understanding of anyone’s backstory (see Juggernaut in the diabolical X3).

pinkdino99

I know we're still a few steps away, but you're going to lose your minds over Days of Future Past and I cant wait.

aarswft

We got The Wolverine first

David Freese

The musical score and the 60’s vibe captures the comic so well. This is probably my favorite X-MEN film. On the musical soundtrack album, Magneto’s theme is appropriately titled, “Frankenstein’s Monster” (dun-dun… Dun-Dun, DUN-DUN, dun-dun) Check out Texas Tech University Band, playing “Magneto” https://youtu.be/xNuyQ6kxyzM?si=7DPGK35A6uytac6j

Ike

The one thing I'll never get over in these films - people acting like Mystique is ugly or undesireable in her natural form. It's Jennifer Lawrence / Rebeca Romijn in blue paint and some light prosthetics. It's not stopping them from being beautiful.

Kyle

Fassbinder has become the definitive Magneto for me. FWIW, he said he loves playing the role and would love to continue. Not sure how they will retcon in the new MCU Mutantverse, but he just nails every facet of the character. He was also great in a smaller part in HAYWIRE, too.

Above Average Dave

Fun fact Magneto was initially meant to appear in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) as a child during the Holocaust, as we see in X-Men (2000) and First Class (2011), but it never happened for legal reasons; Logan was also meant to appear as a POV held by Hydra, who I assume would've been rescued by Captain America. There's no insight into the Magneto cameo. Still, I imagine that Captain America led a strike force in liberating the camp Magneto was in as a child, showcasing Magneto being saved by Captain America. But we'll never know thanks to the lack of information about this planned cameo.

LittleGalaxyBoy

He was in 300 where he also had amazing control over metal 😂

Canonman28

I have a feeling you are both going to LOVE Days of Future's Past

Will C

I’m glad you enjoyed this! I knew you liked origin stories!! Next up The Wolverine, Days of Future Past Whoo whoo! Almost forgot please watch credit scene in The Wolverine it ties into Days of Future Past

David Freese

I recommend she watch the most widely available cut of the film.

Cole Jennett

I recommend watching the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past (the next film)

Odd Thomas

Magneto definitely deserves his own movie

Dan M

She could also watch The Man in the Iron Mask as a double feature with The Three Musketeers.

Dan M

This is so true. If you try an make sense of the continuity issues, it just ruins the experience. Its best to accept the prequel movies as their own entities.

Dan M

Is that version easily accessible to her patrons to watch along? I don’t think I’ve come across it. If it is, I’d love to see it.

Dan M

I know what you mean. I was planning on watching Stardust tonight until I saw this post. Even though your comments about Stardust were glowing, I can’t put off watching their reactions to First Class.

Dan M

All I had to see was the opening 3 words of your post comments to know this is going to be an awesome reaction. I am so excited to watch this tonight. The casting of this movie is incredible…James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender do such a great job as young Charles and Eric. And Kevin Bacon…who knew he could be such a good bad guy! This movie hits on every emotion, and is one of the best origin stories I have seen, imo. And I love how the story weaves in a historical event as a main plot point. So happy you enjoyed this movie…now just wait until you get to Days of Future Past.

Dan M

Not to take anything away from Cassie's reaction to X- Men which I am going to watch tonight! Anne Frank would have been 95 today I visited her grave in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, in 2018. I took a stone from Iowa and left it on her grave. My friend and said a 🙏 at her grave. One of her best quotes that fits Cassie "Whoever is happy will make others happy too" "One voice speaks for six million—the voice not of a sage or a poet but of an ordinary little girl." JFK This is the only known footage of her 9 seconds in the camera will pan up and Anne Frank is at the balcony in white. I apologize Cassie. But that quote from Anne does fit you. https://youtu.be/4hvtXuO5GzU?si=d7HmG5wAq1TJyhan

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

Just saw this posted as I was hitting play on Stardust, I was resolved to do it before the YouTube release so I’m sticking to it, but my mind is going to be conflicted, lol

Cole Jennett

As much as I love this one, the next film Days of Future Past is the best in the prequel series. But if you can, make sure you watch the "Rogue Cut"of the film. Its the Director's cut that has an extra subplot not included in the theatrical version.

Blake Evans

Yay! Excited to watch later. Just remember the next movie is The Wolverine, THEN it’s Days of Future Past.

Aaron Ritchie

Cassie: one thing to note, do not get hung up on continuity between the X-Men films. There are clear contradictions that are going to pop up that you're going to just have to roll with.

Matt Rose

Fantastic origins story. Next: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (2014) is an absolute blast.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

So ofc these X-Men movies are very different from the comics, which is fine because they just want to capture some of the feeling. But the only thing I can't stand for is what they do to Darwin, because in the comics he can adapt to literally ANYTHING.

Taylor Stuckey

I love Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique,Midnight blue is a hot color.💙🔥For the Paris poll Cassie 'The Three Musketeers' 1973⭐⭐⭐⭐ & 'Ratatouille' 2007⭐⭐⭐⭐

Celeste McAllister

I would still love a Magneto film (and a Dr. Doom film).

Above Average Dave

When this was released in theaters I was a little burned out with the X-Men movies and had no plans to see it…but I heard good things, decided to give it a try, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it - the clear standout to me was Michael Fassbender who was just sensational as the younger Magneto

JL_83

Same.

Above Average Dave

Found what I'm doing later. AC and a movie after this hot day

Brandon

This is one of my favorite X-Men movies. Both James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are absolutely perfect as the young Professor X and Magneto. Kevin Bacon was also amazing as Shaw, who is honestly a super underrated villain. Can’t wait for you guys to see the next few films!

Adam Grunther

For my money, this is the best of the X-Men films. the next one, DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, is a very close second. In a perfect world, we'd have gotten an X-MEN ORIGINS: MAGNETO film. When the WOLVERINE film was poorly received, the plans for that Magneto film were absorbed into FIRST CLASS, resulting in the whole 'Nazi hunter' subplot.

Matt Rose

Thank you. I needed this today. 🙏
