X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - Full Reaction

I know not everyone is a fan of this one but we really enjoyed it. I really wanted the background of Logan before we met him in the first movie! I liked the family story, seeing some familiar faces and we love Lofan. What did you like or dislike about this one?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - Full Reaction

Fox ended up Retconning a lot of the characters after this movie, especially with the X-Men prequels.

McShades

You both should know there's going to be end credit scenes.....

So Victor (Sabretooth) did come back in the first X-Men movie as one of Magneto’s henchmen along with Mystique and Toad, but played by a different actor, and it was clear that he and Logan weren’t related in that version of events. Also, Gambit was one of the main X-Men in the ‘90s cartoon, and was the boyfriend of Rogue (who was Iceman’s girlfriend in the movies). Gambit’s power is that he is able to charge objects with kinetic energy, and he prefers to use playing cards.

While there are some things to like in this movie, it's got real problems. The biggest issue a lot of fans had was how they handled "Deadpool". I put it in quotes because what we got in this movie bears virtually NO resemblance to the actual character. The only thing they got right with him was who they cast. Thankfully they ignored this take on him completely when making the actual Deadpool movies. The movie also just feels like they tried to make it cheaply. Even something as simple as Wolverine's claws, the CGI claws look terrible in this movie. His claws looked way better even in the first X-Men movie 9 years prior. That said, this movie isn't totally without redeeming qualities. I absolutely LOVED Liev Schreiber's performance as Victor aka Sabertooth, way more than the version of Sabertooth we got in the first X-Men movie. And of course since I am a male with functioning eyeballs, I was head over heels for Lynn Collins(aka Kayla) in this movie. :) Whatever confusion you have about this movie, don't worry. You can safely ignore it in the timeline of other X-Men movies. Fox certainly did. Treat it like a really long episode of Marvel's "What if...?"

Patrick Egan

It's ok but really goes over a lot of story we already knew.

Odd Thomas

well, except for Nicodemus the Red :)

I think it was this movie that prompted SNL to do the "cool guys don't look at explosions" skit. they were both the same year.

I’m glad that Cassie and Carly enjoyed this movie… to each their own! As a long-time X-Men and Wolverine comics reader, I was very disappointed by the X-Men Origins movie because of how much of Wolverine’s origin was glossed over and changed to fit into a <2 hour movie (which somehow felt a lot longer!). For example, the movie’s <5 minute introduction was adapted from the first 3 issues of the Wolverine: Origins comic, and barely established that Wolverine’s original name was James Howlett, which is why Victor/Sabretooth referred to him as “Jimmy” in the movie. Also, the movie replaced James’ childhood friend Dog with Victor and made them half-brothers. Worst of all, it omitted Wolverine’s first unrequited love, Rose O’Hara, who was a redhead who strongly resembled Jean Grey. All of that origin story omitted in favour of a title sequence depicting Wolverine and Sabretooth fighting in a series of American wars for… reasons. The finding Adamantium and Weapon Plus storylines were shallow and convoluted. The only reason “Team X” was in the movie was to cram in a bunch of recognizable actors/celebrities for “global appeal” — because apparently the FOX execs didn’t believe Hugh Jackman could sell a Wolverine movie on his own — AND setup two spin-off movies for Deadpool and Gambit, which never happened. I hated that Gambit, Cyclops, and Emma Frost were crammed into this Wolverine Origins movie. Worst of all was Professor X (with the same terrible de-aging CG effect from X-Men Last Stand) showing up at the end to save the mutant children. If Prof. X could sense them with Cerebro, he could’ve mind-froze EVERYONE at the “secret” 3 Mile Island base and the mutants could’ve strolled out the front door. I would’ve preferred if the movie had focused on Sabretooth being the primary antagonist, instead of contriving the “Claw Brothers reuniting to fight Frankenstein Deadpool” ending. Or adapted the Omega Red storyline from X-Men Vol.2 #4-7 instead, because of the 60’s to 70’s Cold War time period of the movie. This movie was a tragically squandered opportunity to make a Wolverine solo movie. Fortunately, the Wolverine movies did get better and hopefully the Deadpool & Wolverine movie will be amazing!

Rod Reavern

Deadpool 2, but definitely agree. Best end credits ever!!

Cole Jennett

I actually like this movie more than Age of Apocalypse, which is the worst X-men movie, imo. While many things were wrong with AoA the one thing that really irritates me was the choice to not make Apocalypse a cgi character. I get that cgi is overused in film today but some characters need to be cgi and Apocalypse, like the Hulk and Thanos, is one of those characters. He was just underwhelming to me as a normal sized person instead of the giant he is in the comics.

Richard Maurer

I know lots of people really dislike this one and I can understand it as they did get lots of things wrong. But it’s definitely not the worst movie in the franchise Imo & I’ve always enjoyed watching it. As I thought the sequel to this wasn’t as fun to watch and I did have a few issues with Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, the main one being Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and how they used her character. Obviously not saying to much as I don’t what to spoil anything. But the movie I am looking forward to is Days of Future Past it’s just one of my favourite comic book movies full stop.

Dean Holt

Kind of funny imagining Victor growing his hair out and dying it blond, isn't it? Maybe Victor got into hair metal.

YodatheHobbit

You really just made that up. At no point in X2 does anyone say the procedure made him lose his memories. There are multiple quick flashbacks(literal shots from this film) and references to aspects of it in Days of Future Past and The Wolverine(bone claws), so no, this story is absolutely part of the continuation of films as much as people want to deny it.

YodatheHobbit

Rewatch Deadpool and watch the end credits to “clean up the time line!” 😂

John P Tucker

I know in the real world continuity is a big deal for some people, but honestly now that these are a part of the MCU, I know it's quite a cheat, but there are no such things as continuity problems in a multiverse. But that's been a part of Marvel for a very long time. I'm not sure exact when since I'm not a huge comic reader, but it certainly was in the finale of the 90s Spider-Man animated series. When a new/different thing happens, a new universe is created. Choice. Like Peggy Carter saying no, I would like to stay here with Steve, instead of "being more comfortable in the booth" in "What If....?", that resulted in her becoming Captain Carter. In this universe Deadpool gets his head cut off and looks like he does, in the Deadpool films Colossus looks like he does and has a Russian accent as opposed to how he is in X-Men 2. Different looks, different variations of the same character, different universes. Millions of variants like in Loki can exist, which we know will factor into Deadpool and Wolverine. It just helps everything make sense.

YodatheHobbit

C'mon guys! End credits scenes! Marvel! I'm afraid you missed two scenes which show the last fate of two characters in this film. There's actually three, but for some reason Disney+ didn't include a final bar scene which was released with some prints of the movie. The movie theater I worked at had that one, so I originally only saw the "other" one on YouTube. Always gotta check with superhero movies. You may want to watch them before watching the next X-Men film. Not really relevant to that particular movie, but they're fun. You most recently saw Liev Schreiber I think as one of the bad guys who kidnapped Mel Gibson's young son in Ransom. I think he was the main bad guy's brother? So I've seen this movies a great many times, but in the cast list I had forgotten that Kayla was a character I remember named Silverfox from the comics and tv show, that's her last name in this film. Or at least I knew that back when the film came out, then forgot it again. One thing that requires getting used to in these movies is multiple actors all playing the same character at different ages or stages in their lives. Although nowadays the more modern MCU films are also doing it.

YodatheHobbit

Glad you enjoyed it. Always thought of this one as somewhat forgettable (other than Liev and Jackman together), but very well may have been influenced by the middling to bad reviews at the time. I think you'll definitely enjoy the rest as much, if not more.

Chris Thom

She was a fan of Friday Night Lights as well.

Chris Thom

But so has every other piece of x men media in fact most Marvel media so I don’t fault them for that

David Freese

Already in the works.

David Freese

I think this movie was ok except the Deadpool thing which was erased from canon anyway. I think that's what a lot of people get down on the movie for. I know you have some more to get through until you get to my favorite Wolverine movie, 'Logan'.

Scott Macaulay

Cassie - "I need to rewatch Deadpool" Me - "YESSSSSSS!" Re-watch Deadpool II also, Cassie!

Richard Maurer

Cassie already saw Taylor Kitsch (who is Canadian BTW) as Navy SEAL Lieutenant Mike Murphy in "Lone Survivor" Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins also starred in "John Carter" (2012), which I think both Cassie and Carly would like.

JAKH

"How often must the scoundrel prove himself a hero before he believes it himself." - Prof X. That’s the Gambit I love. Also enjoy Nick Bateman’s version of Gambit better.

Rose

And Logan does see his brother again, tho the relationship is no longer there, Victor Creed becomes Sabertooth

JPDotCom23

As a Canadian, Ryan Reynolds is a national treasure. Almost as much as Cassie herself

Cole Jennett

Im pretty sure this movie isn’t canon going forward. Which I’m fine with. There’s just too many continuity errors with this movie and the rest of the series. For one it’s pretty clearly established in X2 that he has amnesia because the procedure that gave him his metal skeleton was so traumatic for him. Not a stupid adamantium bullet. I’m not gonna spoil what happens in future movies but let’s just say that there’s stuff in them that just does not fit with this movie. Also, I think you ladies are really gonna love the next movie X-Men First Class. Easily one of the best in the franchise.

Cody Nelson

They ruined Deadpool but Ryan was able to save him. He's a national treasure, even though he's Canadian, think some others we know.

JohnnyUtah

Want to see "Tim Riggins" again you need to watch John Carter of Mars. Also stars the actress who played Kayla.

Ryan Geiger

Would it though?

aarswft

Once again, you didn't watch the end credit scene (it would have helped with the deadpool question).

Craig Russell

Fun movie but little continuity in the break-off movies from the X-men. If Carly can’t stand this one and it makes her squeamish then there is no way she can handle the ‘Logan’ movie. That one is epic but not for the faint hearted. Just a heads-up for Carly.

Anthony Oberhauser

Doesn't matter, lol, until Deadpool 2

Chris Retzlaff

I for the most part really enjoy this one. It's only the last fight that I don't care for.

Ian A

this was imo the only x-men movie that sucked bad lol so all the others you watch will be either good or decent, but when you watch them rem they reset the timeline over and over lol

Jayson Phillips

It took me to rewatch this to remember Lynn Collins was a antagonist in the last season of Walking Dead. Even though her look hasn’t changed much.

David Freese

Really enjoying these x men watchalongs with you ladies. Glad you seem to be enjoying them. There's some good stuff in this one with wolvies backstory and gambits pretty cool. Obviously the sub par version of deadpool hurts but it's still worth a watch. The motivations of some of the characters at times was suspect. First class is next which I thought is pretty good. Can't wait although I think the timelines are really going to confuse both of you.

Canadianant

The hardest thing you're going to have to do going forward is remember character names, because the actors can change often.

aarswft

Cassie, to understand why Jimmy Howlett/Logan/Wolverine and his brother Victor Creed/Sabretooth don’t age, you have to think about what it means to have a “healing factor” such as theirs. Free radicals don’t build up in the system, so aging doesn’t occur. For the same reason, Logan can smoke cigars without fear of lung cancer, he can’t get drunk regardless of how much he drinks, poisons and sedatives don’t work on him, he never grows fatigued since any build up of lactic acids is immediately dissipated, etc. It is also worth noting that he has several other animalistic traits, such as an enhanced sense of smell, better hearing and berserker rages. Regarding his claws, the original concept was that the claws were part of the gloves he wears in his comic book costume. Later, it was decided that the claws were added when the Adamantium was bonded to his skeleton. Still later, it was retconned so that he had always had claws and the bonding process simply extended to include bonding with his bone claws. One last thing about Logan. In the films, of course, he’s played by Hugh Jackman, who is 6’3”. But in the comics he’s a full foot shorter. That’s why he’s named Wolverine - like the animal, he’s small but ferocious. Gambit’s power is the ability to imbue any object he touches with kinetic energy. In the comics, he primarily uses his staff and playing cards. After being charged, when they come in contact with something else, the charge is released. That’s why Logan was hurled thru the wall after being hit with the playing cards. Others have mentioned it, but I will too. One of the reasons this film gets so much hate is because of the way it depicts Deadpool. He literally bears no resemblance to the comic book character, which is much more like the character in the Deadpool movies. You really should react to the Deadpool films. After watching the other X-Men movies, so much of what happens in the Deadpool films will suddenly take on new significance. You will also get a greater appreciation of just how intertwined Deadpool is with the X-Men, as so many references, characters and visual cues will suddenly make much more sense.

Just Plain Bob

You missed the two end credit scenes.

D. T. Nelson

I've been asking this for months. But to give credit, she has always said she prefers the theatrical versions and tries to let us know if it's not, if she knows.

Craig Russell

I haven't seen this one but based on what I know I think this is one of those cases where walking in with as little comic book knowledge as possible actually helps you enjoy the film. I imagine that fans of Deadpool were especially disappointed by this movie. I'm both a fan of Deadpool and Sabretooth so my hopes are not high with this one, but since you guys enjoyed it I'll give it a shot. Edit: OH MY GOD, I didn’t even realize that Gambit was going to be in this. I finally see gambit in one of these movies and this is what they do to him. Not my boy. I don’t think I can do this after all, I can only take so much.

Fritz

I loved it!!!

rtt143

I’m never sure which version of some movies you are watching, as a lot of them have multiple versions. is it possible to add in the title or description which version you are watching?

Seth R

Great Reaction to a great Wolverine movie ladies. I know some don't like this movie. It's because some over think it. It's just a great origins movie. Wolverine is a great character. One of the best.

Rick Williams

Lots of good stuff in this film. The end of the helicopter pursuit also helped inspire The Lonely Island's very funny "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions" https://youtu.be/Sqz5dbs5zmo?si=neSAZa-qM_DPSInU "The more you ignore it, the cooler it looks!" And now a keyboard solo by J.J. Abrams.... 💥😊

Steve Holton

Thank you, Cassie and Carly! I hope everyone here has a relaxing and safe Memorial Day weekend! Whatever you do, it would warm my heart if all y'all took just a moment to acknowledge our comrades in arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we could keep this country and have such holidays. God bless.

Above Average Dave

Here’s the good news… that was debatably the worst of the franchise. While I didn’t like the film - too many name drops for the fans, far too much exposition in dialogue, and unexplained motivations like Victor’s evil - I still thoroughly enjoyed the reaction! I love to see you guys totally invested in beloved characters and that’s always a good reason to rewatch it. Now, narratively speaking - other than Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson - there is NO connective tissue between this movie and “Deadpool.” (…and I hope my fellow Patreon folk add nothing else to that). This was no other character’s origin story other than Wolverine/Logan. I’m excited for the next one! There are some stellar X-Men movies coming up next. P.S. From bone claws to surgery, sis’ was a real trooper for hanging in there. Way to go, Carly.

Ike

I had made several comments that I thought Cassie and Carly would like this movie, or at least not NOT like it, and that was the case. Generally this movie is more and more disliked over time. They did not flesh out any characters, some substandard CGI, and a disjointed narrative make for some easy criticism. Especially disliked by fans is the portrayal of the Deadpool character. But it is a serviceable origin story about Logan, they give you all the details, and that is what is important about this movie, not character depth, unfortunately. Of course the difference in character portrayals between this movie and other movies (mostly Deadpool) can now be explained today by just considering . . . the multiverse. That is an easy way to explain away many story and character, and timeline, differences that the X-Men movies are often criticized for. And Marvel has incorporated, officially, this potential multiverse explanation (see the end credit scene for their latest movie, The Marvels, 'nuff said!).

MikeLL

Exactly. Right on.

MikeLL

Interesting take The Wolverine was a good James Mangold film but Logan blew it away. IMO

David Freese

I didn't "hate" the movie itself, but it did fail the characters in some regards. Especially Deadpool, as many have already stated. When you have an attachment to characters, like Deadpool, seeing that character portrayed so differently can be a let down. I hope you will watch the Deadpool movies again. They are so much better than this version. Also, be sure to go back and watch the post credit clips if you haven't. Like most Marvel movies, there is good information there. All in all, another high quality reaction from our favorite popcorn sisters.

Michael West

Actually in X men Sabertooth did know Logan that’s why he took the dog tags but it wasn’t looked into further because he was killed off so quickly.

David Freese

Styker was the Colonel and main antagonist in this movie not any of the generals. I don’t know if that’s who you meant or not but I thought I’d let you know.

David Freese

Carly, your with us ride or die through this franchise now... there a couple more solo "Wolverine" movies, you can do it! I have said previously that it shouldn't be skipped, regardless of what perception it has, as it is essential all back story and Cassie is always wanting to instantly know more about characters she finds interesting, so I knew from that point of view she would enjoy it. I like the opening montage, it was an interesting way of showing the passage of time in "Logan's" life and that it has been filled with violence. But they effects in some places... I'm looking at you claws... are as good as the other movies, even the earlier movies in the franchise. Most people that have the issues, already have an attachment to the characters from other media and have issues with how they get handled, but they also don't get handled that consistently across the movies. Liev Screiber ("Victor Creed") is great in this. Although this version of the character creates an inconsistency with a previous seen version from the first "X-Men" movie where he is known as "Sabretooth" (and more comic book accurate), so the fans deduct points. Cassie you probably last saw him as one of the kidnappers in "Ransom", which is why he may have seemed familiar. I knew Taylor Kitsch (" Remy LeBeau/Gambit") would get recognised, I think "Friday Night Lights" has been mentioned previously in reactions, and although I never watched it, I know that's how he broke out. "Gambit's" power is that he can charge objects with kinetic energy and then the energy is release when they hit another object. That is why the cards behave as they are grenades, and he charged his staff to effectively destroy that alley way. I thought Lynn Collins ("Kayla SIlverfox") would get recognised, but not surprised she didn't. She played the Keanu Reeves assistant on "The Lake House", the one that was pretty thirsty for his character "Alex Wyler". She was also in movie called "John Carter" with Taylor Kitsch ("Gambit"), which was considered a flop and put a dent in their careers, particularly Taylor's.

Mojo One Thousand

As a teenager I loved this movie, as an adult I see why a lot of people don’t like it but I still enjoy it.

Alex Gorell

Bryan Singer made it about the "X-Men" about a disliked minority because that is what happens in the comics, or at least the '90s animated series is filled with that narrative. I took Cassie's journey through the "X-Men" as chance to revisit the animated series, so it is pretty fresh for me. My understanding is also that, as the "X-men" came about during the civil rights era of the US during the '60, so it was a reflection of the times; which is a departure from hero's journey you are referring to that most other comic properties usually leverage.

Mojo One Thousand

Pretty sure the "Deadpool" movies straddle "Apocalypse" in terms of the releases even though the first "Deadpool" is pretty close in release timings. Cassie said in the reaction she to watch again with all the new X-men knowledge.

Mojo One Thousand

The film where he is in Japan is my favorite Wolverine movie. It'll be coming up soon on your watchlist

Bill Maurer

I was going to say a similar thing... there a few that they miss.

Mojo One Thousand

Connections to Captain America: In the comics the Weapon Plus Program that experimented on Wolverine giving him his Adamantium skeleton was based on Project Rebirth a Super Solider project created during WW2 that gave birth to Captain America. Steve Rogers is often branded as Weapon l the first attempt at creating the perfect super-soldier. Logan is known as Weapon X the tenth instalment of the Weapon Plus Program that gave Wolverine his Adamantium skeleton. In the comics Logan and Steve actually met in 1941, within the city of Madripoor and fought together a few times throughout World War 2 mostly on the Western Front. Marvel did try to get Hugh Jackman to cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) as a captured POV in France who I assume would've been rescued by Steve Rogers. This would've connected Fox's X-Men films to the MCU but of course this never happened. Wolverine and Captain America together in a film fighting together is something I've always wanted to see and it's so sad we never got this during the early days of the MCU back during Phase 1 which could've connected X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man all together in a shared universe with The Avengers from the beginning. ------------------------------------------------------------ Weapon X Program: The Weapon X Program depicted in this film is slightly differant to the comics. Stryker himself was never apart of this program as in the comics William Stryker is a controversial preacher and televangelist, first appearing God Loves, Man Kills (1982) as Reverend William Stryker. He does have a military past in the comics, former Sgt in the U.S Army but it's the least important part of his character. If you go back and read Weapon X and other comics connected to Logan's origin there's no mention or appearance of Stryker. Instead a character called The Professor was involved with the creation of Weapon X. Another change is in the comics Logan was abducted into the Weapon X program while in the film he volunteers a pretty big change, naturally Logan being kidnapped and experimented on is far more impactful than them simply wiping his memory and Logan getting upset. He also spends far more time within the program, being given his Adamantium Skeleton and then taking part in operations alongside other Weapons within a team similar to what we see Stryker leading in this film. While in the film Logan works for Striker for a while and then is given Adamantium only for him to escape. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Possible Wakanda connection? The start of the film with Team X and Stryker looking for a meteor rock in Africa is seen by many as a possible Wakanda reference. The locals hold this rock as something special saying it came from the sky so many have wondered if this could've been vibranium, In the comics adamantium is made from mixing steel with vibranium. But the term vibranium is never spoke in this film for legal reasons so we can only assume using knowledge from the comics. There's also a deleted scene that shows a young Ororo Munroe (Storm) within the village, Storm was raised in Harlem, New York City and Cairo, Egypt in the comics but does have connections to Black Panther as well. Hakeem Kae-Kazim the actor playing the man in charge of the Diamond operation in Largos would later voice T'Chaka the former King of Wakanda, Black Panther, and father to T'Challa in The Avengers: Earths Mightiest Hero's. T'Chaka in live action was played by John Kani in Civil War (2016) when the Vienna International Centre was bombed and he was killed, T'Chaka also showed up in flashbacks and within the Ancestral Plane to speak with T'Challa played by the late Chadwick Boseman. ------------------------------------------------------------ Kayla Silver Fox: Kayla Silver Fox played by Lynn Collins is from the comics where she was in a relationship with Logan just like this film. She is also killed by Sabretooth but this was revealed to be a false memory from an implant given to him by the Weapon X Program. Silver Fox would later be killed for real in the comics by Sabretooth. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sabretooth: In the comics Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth has no relation with Wolverine in the comics. He even made his first appearance in an Iron Fist comic back in 1977 and overtime just kind of became a rival to Wolverine. He was a member of Nick Fury's black ops team known as The Avengers back in 1959 (Precursor to The Avengers Superhero Team) and later during the mid 1960s would be apart of Team X along with Logan. Sabretooth would also service in the Vietnam War, modern times he would fight Iron Fist and then a bunch of storylines of him and Wolverine fighting each other. ----------------------------------------------------------- Caged Mutants: There's alot of Mutant cameos when Kayla and Logan decide to free all the mutants in Strykers prison. We see a red head mutant with his mouth covered, presumably this is Sean Cassidy a Mutant called Banshee who can produce a sonic scream, named after the female spirit in Irish folklore. We see a kid with a lizard tongue who may be a young Mortimer Toin also known as Toad who we see in the first X-Men films. There's a girl with freezing powers similar to Iceman who may be the Mutant Ice Princess. There's a kid who can form a tornado, this could be Riptide. We see a pretty important character that being Emma Silver Fox who in this film is Emma Frost a character who can turn their skin to Diamonds. Emma has alot of connections to the X-Men in the comics and even became leader to the mutant community. So here's the big one for many. We see a white haired Mutant who is tied up trying to break free by using super speed. This is Peter/Petrio Maximoff better known as Quicksilver the twin to Wanda Maximoff. ----------------------------------------------------------- Deadpool: So yeah... That aren't my Deadpool lol The studio from my understanding knew this and actually planned to set up the character for the future that's why we see him at the end of the film shushing the audience. A pretty risky take for the character that was undone with Deadpool (2016) a film fans very much loved thanks to it's perfect take on the character. Ryan as Wade is great though at the start until they introduce him as "Deadpool" at the end of the movie.

LittleGalaxyBoy

You certainly know how to kick of a holiday weekend ladies! Action, excitement, a love story, vengeance and, in my opinion, a pretty cool origin story. I know this movie gets a lot of hate from fans of the comics, but taken as it is in a vacuum, this is a really cool movie. My only regret is that Gambit didn’t have a larger role in this movie. Taylor Kitsch was perfect for the part. And Hugh Jackman does a great job of adding some emotional layers to Logan/Jimmy’s character. Have a great Memorial Day weekend Cassie, Carly, Ben, and all of my fellow PIB movie lovers. HELLO SUMMER! Unofficially, of course 😉

Dan M

Enjoyed your reaction. I like this movie okay because I like Hugh Jackman. Silver Fox (Lynn Collins) is pretty. Nice to see the interesting background on Wolverine/Logan. I like the brief New Orleans portion of the movie. We used to go to New Orleans for the weekend when we lived in Louisiana. The Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) character seemed kind of ridiculous at the end. The movie was somewhat confusing/convoluted to me. I don't think I have seen this movie before this watch along. I might have taken my son to see it in the theater when released, but he would have only been 9 years old. I haven't watched that many movies of the X-Men franchise, nor do I read comics. The wars they panned through in the very beginning (the montage) were American Civil War, WWI, WWII, and Vietnam War. I notice you had an immediate recognition of "Tim Riggins." You must be a fan of the Friday Night Lights series, as you may have indicated in a previous reaction. So am I. I saw Deadpool (2016) in the theater when released -- went for the purpose that my son and his friends (then age 16) could get in, and I ended up liking it.

Clay F

I always believed that superheroes were the symbolic manifestations of the emotional pain of walking the hero's journey. However, Bryan Singer made the first X-Men about being a disliked minority. Now, it seems their is no overriding sub textual journey. Sort of like the Total Recall Remake, just an empty action movie. (IMO)

Uncle Phoenix

P.S. You have to start watching the end credit scenes! Just sayinggggg! AND... you must re-watch the Deadpool movies. You HAVE TO! GREAT reaction, ladies!

Philip Alan

Please, a reaction to the two (and soon 3) Deadpool movies 😀 When you get up to them in the timeline... Which going just by the release dates is after `X-Men: Apocalypse`. Lots of the in-jokes will make more sense now that you know some of the backstory.

Planner

I'll give this a SPOILERS tag to be safe, but if you want to know how much of this movie matters Cassie I can let you know. 99% of it is completely ignored moving forward. Besides the fact Ryan Reynolds is playing "Deadpool" in this, this is in no way related to his later, way, WAY better portrayal of the character. He was so disappointed in how he was used here he pushed for years for a proper version, including leaking test footage of a better version to fans so they'd demand a better version and oh boy did we get the REAL Deadpool later. Hugh Jackman is great as always and Liev Schreiber is good as well, this movie is just bogged down in bad special effects, poor editing, and a bad supporting cast.

Choof

When I was a kid , I always loved Wolverine he was always my favorite. Still is in a lot of ways. Because I love Michigan football, and the wolverine was always my favorite animal. I realize this is just silly and the animal and the football team have nothing to do with the superhero. But to me they all were the same. Just my autistic mind trying to make things match. That didn't match. https://youtu.be/Mnv0sFGwCS8?si=d0QErZEm1Mj90pcJ

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

It may get realised during the watch along, but the General at the start is Stryker. You saw him in X Men 2 as the main bad guy. Different actor, same character. Also, the bone claws were not Logan's mutation. His mutation is his ability to heal and his longevity. The claws came about when the adimantium was grafted to his bones. The claws were a weapon introduced to his body but never grafted to any bones. I heard about this when watching an episode of Capes and Cowels on YouTube.

Brian McGovern

The issues here are many… mostly inconsistencies in tone and canon with the comics and other films. We saw Sabertooth in X-Men 1 and he’s a giant dude with long blonde hair and he clearly doesn’t know Logan. Now he’s Liev Schreiber and they’ll never address it. Then there’s the special effects. His claws look so bad constantly. Cheap. The CGI looks unfinished, like a cartoon, like it’s from the 90s. But the biggest issue is Deadpool. They got this character so wrong that it is embarrassing. I mean when he’s Ryan Reynolds and he’s talking it’s close… but when it’s switched to brilliant martial artist Scott Adkins with Ryan Reynold’s eyes digitally put on his face and his mouth sewn shut… NOPE! That is a travesty. Just nothing about the character is right. The claws? Nope. The cyclops blast vision? Nope. Teleporting? Nope. They just did whatever they wanted and didn’t care about the character. The two upcoming Deadpool movies in the line up make so many jokes about this because even Ryan Reynolds was publicly very unhappy.

Carly has the right idea. DON'T GET SPOILED with public opinions. I wish Cassie could avoid them.

Liked the end, disliked the start. Hated everything in between. JK: Honestly don't remember much about it.
